Gurgaon is not just about stylish buildings in
keeping with the latest international trends.
The city’s style quotient goes a lot deeper,
permeating the consciousness of the people
who make it what it is today.
All it takes to figure this out is a few minutes along the extant
Mall Mile that is MG Road, the enduring Galleria or the latest
entrant which has taken the city by storm, the DLF CyberHub.
In our Cover Story, we talk about the men and women who
ensure that Gurgaon makes a trend statement.
Not too many years ago, a young boxer from Bhiwani made
international headlines when he won the bronze medal at the
2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. Now 28, Vijender Singh
continues to inspire young boxers in his home state, Haryana,
mostly through the by-now-legendary Bhiwani Boxing Club.
In Gurgaon, scores of youngsters line up each morning
at the Tau Devi Lal Stadium, training for what they feel
would be their moment of glory much like Vijender’s in 2008.

no further than National Award-winning actor Rajkummar
Rao in our Entertainment section. Rajkummar, who spent his
childhood studying in Gurgaon schools and still visits the city

mistake. It takes style very seriously.
Welcome to Gurgaon, where the average
denizen will blend in effortlessly in any
A-grade fashion capital.
Take a trendiness test. You could try
this while out for a bite at the DLF CyberHub or when catching a musical at
the Kingdom of Dreams. Or then shopping at Galleria or hanging out in Ambience Mall. Almost all young people who
pass by will be wearing the very latest in
design and trends, many conscious that
they have a label to flaunt.
Clothes matter clearly, as do shoes and

handbags and even cell phones as Gurgaon stakes claim to being the most stylish city in the NCR.
No wonder then that the Millenium City
is the natural home to haute couture designer studios and big garment export
houses, swank showrooms that display
sleek cars and motorbikes and retailers
of expensive gadgets, all firmly eyeing
the patronage of Gurgaon’s upwardly
mobile population.
To put a finger on the pulse of Gurgaon’s
style quotient, DLF City News met trendy
young men and women who invest in
how they look, established and upcoming
designers eager to dress them and corporate executives who recognise that clothes
make the man, and the woman.

Akshat Joshi, who works at G Cell
Technologies, says Gurgaon has an impeccable sense of fashion. He says he
loves brands like Zara, Gant, US Polo and
Wrangler, but avoids going overboard. “I
avoid buying clothes just because they
are in and prefer to buy classic clothes
that never go out of style. I also invest in
a few higher end items as opposed to following trends.”
Hemant Dhawan, a young man who
works in the Kingdom Of Dreams, has a
definitive take. “Fashion has to do with
ideas, the way we live and what is happening around. Gurgaon is a leader in
the field of fashion and to me that translates into a person who always looks
amazing,” he says.
THE YOUNG AND
THE FASHIONABLE
Celebrities, especially film stars, seem
to be the top inspiration for the way
many of Gurgaon’s young and fashionable style themselves.
“Gurgaon is quite a fashionable city
and I too am keeping pace by choosing
to shop at Lifestyle. I really admire Amitabh Bachchan’s sense of dressing,”
says Amandeep Singh who works at Wizcraft in Gurgaon.
Purnima Nayyer, 26, a resident of Sector 31 keeps an eye on the stylish Kareena Kapoor. “I love following my favourite
icon Kareena Kapoor just as much as

bags,” she says. Lavie bags are endorsed
by Kareena.

Deepika Saini finds it both uncomfortable and expensive to keep pace with
changing trends, but she too has her favourite. “Sonam Kapoor is my fashion
icon and I love wearing flowing skirts
with a camisole,” she says.
Nineteen-year-old Rishabh Duggal says
his style is “preppy” and he admires actor Varun Dhawan’s sense of style, while
Sushma Panchal, 22, says she dresses
like Deepika Padukone. “I love to wear
crop tops with high-waist shorts,” says
Sushma. Like many other youngsters,
she does shop at the malls or even at
the popular Sarojini Nagar market, but
has started enjoying grabbing great
deals shopping online at websites like
Limeroad.
FASHION GOES ONLINE
Sushma is part of a growing population
that finds it practical and convenient
to shop online. Clothes, shoes, even
designer bags are just a click away. Leading e-commerce sites offer big discounts
and a much wider array of choices than
shops can physically stock. Products
are reviewed and rated and most online
stores in India offer convenient terms
like cash on delivery and easy return.
Websites like myntra.com and jabong.
com are popular – shoppers say their
payment methods are safe and they are
professional about delivery dates, quality of products and customer support.
Studies show that the online business
in apparel has overtaken every other
online business in developed countries.
In India too, this is the fastest growing
segment. With traffic jams and parking
problems, customers are increasingly
opting to shop from the comfort of their
homes or offices.

been happy mates. For those who
enjoy their fashion perched on
high heels and can afford a big
price tag, a Louboutin is an object
of desire. That French shoe is now
in India as are other luxury brands
like the Italian Tod’s. If a fan of
Italian craftsmanship, you can
also pick up a Bottega Veneta or
then sleek Prada handbags.

CATCHING ‘EM YOUNG
Deia Puri doesn’t think she is too young
to be fashionable. The 15-year-old shops
online from amazon.com and admires
celebs like Emma Watson and Cara De-
levingne. The young teen’s forever look
is a pair of short shorts and a shirt with
a pretty collar. When she goes out she
prefers wearing a skirt in the summer
and a dress with a coat and pumps in the
winter. Her favourite accessory is a small
diamond necklace and her style mantra
is adding “a bit of funk to make it more
fun”.
Niket Mehra, only 14, is another fashionable kid who shops online on ebay.
Tag Heuer, with brand ambassadors like Shahrukh Khan and
Lewis Hamilton, has become a
popular luxury brand to flaunt on
the wrist for those who can afford
it. Rolex, Chopard and Piaget have
their own fan following.
Vertu luxury mobile phones are at
the high end of fancy. Also counted as a style statement is the iPhone 5S, which does face tough
competition from the HTC one M8
and Sony Xperia Z2.

likes and his favourite accessory, he says,
is his guitar. Clearly the youngest of Gurgaon’s youngsters are now looking to be
trendsetters; they know what they want
and also where to get it at the best price
possible.
DESIGNER FASHION
Of course, designer fashion will never
be out of vogue. Wearing a Ritu Kumar
is a timeless statement. Ritu Kumar is
based in Udyog Vihar and, along with JJ
Valaya, who is at Manesar, crests the list
of top designers in Gurgaon. Then there
are brands like Study by Janak who draw
their clientele from the upwardly mobile
middle class.
Vandy and Manoj Mehra, founders
of Study by Janak – a pioneer in men’s
clothing – say they are happy to see that
Indian men are now far more open to experimenting with fashion. Gone are the
days, they say, when men’s shopping was
about picking up the standard trouser,
shirt and blazer. Shoppers now lay much
more emphasis on cut and detailing on
lapels, cuff buttons, collar styles et al.
And, says Vandy, it is not just the young
brigade that is asking for more. Men of
50 and over are dressing it up and how.
Gurgaon, she says is rather fashionable
and has two distinct sets - “There is the
corporate client who is very safe and conservative in his dressing and then there
is the new generation that is in tandem
with global fashion.”

They use social tools like Facebook and
Twitter to create communities and a
buzz around their designs.
Deveena Mahajan, 24, graduated from
NIFT in Knitwear Designing in 2012 and
worked briefly for garment manufacturing and exporting house before setting
up designer label ‘Divina’ which targets
the 25-year-old with casual chic. “My
price range starts at Rs 1000 and goes
up according to the quality of workmanship and fabric,” she says. Divina
also sells online and has reported good
response. Deveena says the hottest selling item on her rack is a dressy shirt
with lace details. Her collection reflects
Sourabh Saxena, an NIFT alumnus
armed with a Masters in fashion and
art from Domus, Italy, is an innovative
designer and exporter who believes
that fashion and Gurgaon have a close
relationship. Sourabh works out of his
Studio Thirsty Crow in Sector 31 and designs and develop products for international brands in USA, Europe, Australia
and Africa.
“We do complete product development
and infuse a sensibility of aesthetics
and techniques. We are currently working on handwoven bespoke textiles and
developing a core textile range using
industrial and traditional yarns. We are
also strengthening the roots of our studio and creating an online presence for e
commerce,” says Sourabh.

Rajiv Sangar and Gloria Woodward
met as management trainees in the 1980s
and took a twin plunge into marriage
and business when they decided to start
Sangar Overseas. They moved residence
to Gurgaon in 1995 and built a factory in
Udyog Vihar. “We now run three factories in Gurgaon, employ about 800 workers and staff and we manufacture and
export girls wear to some of the leading
stores and brands in Europe, the Middle
East and USA”, says Rajiv, whose daughters Priyanka and Ayesha also work at
Sangar Overseas.
Rajiv says many buyers have moved
to India because “labour wages are one
third of China’s and there is a large
availability of English speaking middle management which is creative and
understands the fashion needs of the
West.” He also says that Indian garment
factories are largely compliant with social, safety and ethical practices because
of which many international stores have
moved here from Bangladesh, which has
a big cost advantage over India, but has
had accidents recently that have raised
safety concerns.

The British Safety Council Five-Star
Safety Certification is considered as one
of the highest safety certifications in the
world as it benchmarks the organization’s Safety Management System and
arrangements in the buildings against
current best practices in the world. This
is the highest grading that is awarded
by the council in Occupational Health &
Safety Management System.

DLF City News in conversation with Christopher McDermott,
Associate Auditor, British Safety Council
What are the different parameters
on which the buildings and companies are being judged?
The 5-star system goes for everything
that can be connected to safety. So, start
from the top. We actually created the plan
around to keep the buildings, residents,
clients of DLF safe. We implemented the
plan and ensured that plan works. It follows the traditional Plan-do-check- act
cycle.
Are there really 66 parameters of
occupational health check?
There are 66 different elements and
each element questions further element.
So there are quite a few questions to be
answered within the orbit.
So how long does an audit take usually?
Depending on the size and geography
that we need to cover, there is no fixed
time. The whole process that DLF have
done, we took 10 audit days. Quite a lot of
preparation before it began.
Comparing it with Global standards,
what is it that is getting fulfilled in
India?
If we compare the BSC 5 star to global
standards, we say 18000 to 1 safety man-

agement systems. If a company achieves
18000 to 1, we say it gets 2 stars. BSC goes
way beyond 18000 to 1.
Are there any other companies in
India which you are auditing on these
lines?
Yes, Reliance Industries are one which
I’m auditing. Tata do the 5 star audits
as also Asian Paints. DLF is the first in
an industry of their own to achieve 5
star. It’s the first real estate company to
undertake the 5 star audit and to do exceptionally well and achieve the rating
globally.
This kind of an audit is done for all
kinds of office buildings?
It’s done for all kinds of industries.
Same kind of audit we do for petrochemicals, manufacturing and construction.
Same audit for all industries. DLF being
a real estate organization has put itself
on pedestal with heavy/ high risk industries.
And they are obviously one of the
largest offices in India?
Yes they are. My find is that when I visited similar companies of large offices such
as call centres that they don’t recognize
safety as an issue and therefore they are
quite unsafe. DLF, 18 months ago decided
they wanted to be better than everybody
else and started on the safety route and
achieved in a very short period of time a
rating of 5 star.
What are your suggestions for further improvements?
That’s part of the process that you get
someone who has seen excellent organizations and pass on the best practice scenario.
Is this going to be implemented in
the future projects by DLF?
DLF had already started implementation and assessing the effectiveness of
the implementation. There has been no
resting on DLF’s part.

Rezang La has become the stuff of folk
lore for its remarkable story of heroism. The war memorial at Rezang La
Chowk commemorates the spirit of the
soldiers of the 13th Kumaon regiment.
“The first time the brave soldiers of the
Indian Army fought to the last man was
when a platoon of the Sikh regiment
at Saragarhi, was killed to the man in
the North-West frontier. The battle of
Rezang La with valour displayed by 13
Kumaon is the second instance in the
history of the Indian army when troops
fought to the last,” says a proud Lt Gen
(Retd) JBS Yadav who was involved in
the execution of this project.
The battle of Rezang La was fought in
November 1962, when 120 men of C Company, 13 Kumaon regiment confronted
the Chinese troops. Located at 17000
feet on the flanks of Chushul air field at
Ladakh, Rezang La is an important pass,
where temperatures often drop to minus
30 degrees. The loss of this territory
would have opened an avenue of attack
for the enemy to capture the airfield.

“The company was commanded by Major Shaitan Singh, who despite being
seriously wounded continued to encourage and lead his men, who followed his
brave example. He had wounds in his
arms and abdomen but he refused evacuation and ordered his men to continue
fighting,” recalls Major (Retd) Hukam
Chand Yadav.
When the guns fell silent and the smoke
drifted away, 114 bullet riddled bodies of

and was taken prisoner but managed to
escape and return to his brigade headquarters.

The Lt Atul Katarya Chowk and school
is an integral part of Gurgaon’s landscape and is another glowing tribute to
the courage of a young man in the face
of adversity. It was on October 14, 1998
that a third generation soldier from
a brave Jat family laid down his life,
falling to enemy bullets while trying
to break into a militant hideout in the
Kashmir valley. A courageous warrior
who lived by the ethos, “Service before
self ”, Lt Atul Katarya, SM, led from the
front with fiery zeal.
His story is one of an introvert, coura-
geous boy. The young soldier had a passion for adventure sports like trekking
and rafting and had declared, “I am
proud to be in the Army. I have got a
chance to interact with so many people.
The lessons that you learn in the Army
cannot be imbibed in any classroom of
the world.”
A true tiger of the 13th Punjab regiment,
Lt Atul Katarya, SM, played a pivotal
role in the elimination of militants and
foreign mercenaries in fiercely fought
encounters in Kashmir. Through his
military genius and his ability to gather
information employing unorthodox and
innovative tactics, he became the bane
of the insurgents and terrorists in the
Kashmir Valley.

TRACKS FOR CYCLISTS
For Sanjeev Saxena, the Haryana Urban Development Authority’s (HUDA)
recent plan to develop dedicated cycle
tracks along all master roads of the Millennium City has come as a personal victory. Saxena had lost his father in a fatal
accident last year when he was cycling
in the wee hours of the morning. Since
then, Saxena had been fighting a legal
battle to make roads safe for pedestrians
and cyclists in the city.
“Cycling was a routine exercise for my
father. But that day, a car came suddenly
and hit him from behind. He died on the
spot. It was then that I decided to fight it
out in the local court. I am happy that the
government is finally thinking about cycle tracks and has constituted a committee to prepare a feasibility report in this
regard,” said Saxena.
Cycle tracks have, in fact, been a longstanding demand of the people of Gurgaon, particularly since not a single
road in the city has a dedicated track.
“The city roads are free for vehicular
traffic but there is hardly any scope for
pedestrians and cyclists for which they
meet with accidents on a regular basis
as compared to the rest,” claimed Pankaj Kharbanda, who heads an NGO, Adhikar Manch that fights for the rights of the
common man.
Interestingly, there were no provisions
for cycle tracks in the urban planning of
HUDA and not a single functional cycle
track was proposed in the Gurgaon-Manesar Urban Complex (GMUC).
It was only when the Ministry of Urban
Development issued a guideline that the
Haryana Government swung into action
and constituted the six-member committee to work on the model of the project in
New Gurgaon where the Rapid Metro line
is being extended from Cyber City to Sec-

Department will survey all master roads
where dedicated cycle tracks are proposed
to be developed. The project may be implemented on Build Operate and Transfer
(BOT) mode.
The tracks have been proposed for Golf
Course Road, Golf Course Extension
Road, Mehrauli-Gurgaon (MG) Road,
Artemis Road, Fortis Road and other sector roads and all of them would connect
with the Rapid Metro Station as well as
all five metro stations of DMRC.

As per the proposed plan, HUDA has
also earmarked 50 sites for cycle stands
and 32 of them are near the proposed
Rapid Metro stations and DMRC metro

proposed for Iffco Chowk, Galleria, Sushant Lok and Vyapar Kendra. All of
them will be connected with the cycle
tracks.
According to former Haryana Chief
Secretary PK Chaudhary, though there is
no provision for a functional cycle track
in the GMUC, Haryana Government does
have the Integrated Mobility Plan (IMP)
since 2010 which suggests possible infrastructure for cycling. “The IMP has
a cycle master plan proposing about 210
km of road for making cycle tracks but
nothing has been done in this regard so
far,” he observed.
According to administration officials,
cycling tracks and stands would be
made soon. The Municipal Corporation
of Gurgaon (MCG) expects to receive
some viable proposals within a month
from the engineers regarding road infrastructure for introducing sustainable transport models and creation of
public spaces. ø

If you have been disposing of electricals, mobiles and computer-related waste
to the kabadiwala, you are polluting your
environment with harmful hazardous elements that can cause cancer. However,
small initiatives for safe disposal of ewaste can go a long way in protecting
and conserving the environment.
So, when Ruchika Sethi, a resident
of Nirwana Country in Gurgaon approached Earth Sciences, a company
authorised by the government for appropriate disposal of e-waste, the latter
decided to carry out an e-waste drive in
the locality with the help of the Resident
Welfare Association (RWA) to educate
and encourage people to follow safe disposal norms for e-waste.
Thanks to the drive, residents of Nirwana Country came together to support
the cause and brought all their electrical
items, computers, printers and mobile
phones for e-waste disposal. “I saw a paradigm shift in disposal of e-waste wherein people did not ask for scrap value and
got both big and small items for disposal
to channelise through the correct source.
We need to let go of this thinking of holding on to old irreparable stuff and the
‘kabadi value’ to some extent in order to
meet safe disposal norms,” said Ruchika
Sethi.
RWA president Brigadier Ganju said,
“There are hazardous products like mercury, radioactive material and halogen in
e-waste products that people give away as
kabadi. Due to incorrect methods of disposal by kabadis, the harmful products
are all over in the air which may lead to
dangerous diseases and pollute the environment. Hence, the drive was meant to

eventually lead to deadly diseases like

quite clear in her preference and style,
“My home is classic in style and is influenced greatly by the 19th century colonial designs.”
Hues of beige and brown dominate the
colour of the house. The sofas have a
neutral beige and cream look and are accessorised with peach and rust colours.
Shivani speaks enthusiastically about
her shopping preferences, “My personal
choice for furniture and artifacts has been
Italy and Hurtado in Delhi,” she says.
The other unique feature in her home
are the rich silk curtain blinds in browns

the blinds a distinctive character. “My
interior designer Monica has always
known my taste in curtains and blinds.
My daughter’s room has been done with
velvet mauve blinds with a bow plait to
give it a feminine look” explains Shivani.
On the other hand, Vinti and Manish
Bharati’s home at Nirwana Country
stands out for its simplicity and sophistication. The suaveness of their house
proves how a simple combination of red
and white can create a fashion statement.
With white leather straight line sofas,
Vinti has used red cushions to embellish
the look. “Red with white adds a good
spark to the room. We wanted a subtle
and sophisticated look. We have encouraged elegance and simplicity by adding
certain elements like fountains and modern art paintings,” explains Vinti.
To further complement the look, there
are unique red chairs and the drape for
cushions is raw silk which is in fashion
today. The white curtains give a cool look
to the room. “I feel the concept of white
curtains looks classy and modern. The
curtains have lines in self with crinkles
that add elegance and grace to the look.
I do most of my shopping from Floor and
Furnishings that have an array in designs
and colours for selections,” adds Vinti.
In fact, when it comes to colours, the use
of beige is quite widespread across the
city. Nidhi Kapoor, who resides in World
Spa, has merged light and dark beige to
create a fresh look in her room. “I always
favour pastel colors and the cushions that I
have chosen are a combination of gold and
silver with floral design to give it a graceful and exquisite look. The curtains which
have light and dark beige stripes enhance
the beauty of the room,” says Nidhi.
“My living room has been designed by

silk curtains give a cool and polished

white raw silk sofas. For cushions, they
have used blue and beige. “We wanted
to use shades of blue as opposed to the
trend of beige. With one straight line set
of sofas in off white raw silk and the second with floral prints in combination of
turquoise and lime green, I have maintained a Mediterranean look,” explains
Seema.
Clearly, personality and preference
shape the home décor trends today and
Gurgaon certainly flaunts a distinctive

15-YEAR-OLD ‘KARATE KING’ DHARMANSHU SAINI SHARES HIS DREAM TO BE AN
INTERNATIONAL CHAMPION IN THE NEAR FUTURE

At the age of seven, Dharmanshu Saini started karate as a
recreational activity. Little did he know that one day he would
emerge a National champion. A student of Class X in Ajanta
Public School, Dharmanshu has won many laurels to carve his
own space in karate.
A short-tempered boy to begin with, Dharmanshu believes
that the game has taught him the most essential control which
is managing his temper. “This game has made me more docile
as during fights one of the most difficult aspects is controlling
the punches. We cannot hit too hard. But once you learn it, you
get habitual.” smiles the 15-year-old lad.
He explains how there is a great level of physical fitness involved in the game which helps in increasing stamina. A rich
vegetarian diet with a fair amount of
exercise like running and stretching
help him stay fit. His fitness routine
includes a half-an-hour session early
in the morning and another hour in
school where he gets to practice with
others. In the evenings, he practices
with his coach on improving his kicks
and punches.
At an age when boys enjoy going out
for movies with friends, eating out and
other entertainment activities, Dharmanshu sacrifices it all to focus on his
performance. With a strict diet that his
coach instructs him to follow, he has
given up on all those mouth watering
delights as part of his discipline to the
demands of the sport. What’s more, he
has struck a fine balance between studies and sports.
His coach, Sunil Saini, says, “The two
most important qualities to master any
game are discipline and hard work. I
have seen Dharmanshu adhering to
these strictly. He is punctual and keeps

on practicing after class time also to accomplish excellence.
Moreover, success in any field where you win medals and see
people respecting you enhances your self confidence which
helps you perform even better. I see a brilliant prospect for
Dharmanshu in karate.”
Talk about his motivation and Dharmanshu says he owes it
all to his mother. “Initially, she was apprehensive that I could
hurt myself but slowly turned strong enough to force me for
practice and exercise early mornings. Whenever I have been in
two minds or even when I have lost at times, she has motivated
me. It’s better if someone is there by your side. It cheers you a
lot more,” says the budding champion. He adds, “My coach has
worked very hard on me and if I am good at the sport today, the
credit surely goes to him.”
On a lighter note, he also speaks of
how he faces competition at the hands
of his elder sister who is also a gold medalist at the national level. The siblings
boost each other’s confidence by providing a healthy competition at home.
His most memorable moment was
when he won his first gold medal, at
the district level in 2011, with his coach
jumping with excitement along the
sidelines. Between 2011 and 2013, he
bagged gold medals at all levels - district, state and national. His only let
down was bagging silver at the nationals early this year. “When I won the silver and not the gold, I decided to work
harder on the gold next year,” says the
young lad with confidence.
On his dream, he states, “My aim is
to win at the international level. The
World Karate Federation (WKF) is
where I aspire to be.” The way Dharmanshu is going, international fame
isn’t far away.

Regally dressed in a colourful ensemble with traditional jewellery glistening on her arms and neck, Rama Pandey redefines timelessness. In a style reminiscent of ‘nawabi tehzeeb’, the hospitality
is impeccable and we are plied with goodies under her watchful
eye. Grace and style transports us into a bygone era and her face
lights up as the photographer takes position and she renews her affair with the
lens in the true spirit of a diva.
The fourth of seven sisters and two
brothers, Gurgaon resident Rama Pandey is not just a former BBC journalist
and Doordarshan newsreader but also
a consummate media personality turned
entrepreneur who has adapted to changing times. A self confessed romantic who
is both traditional and modern, she married for love many years ago and continues to follow that passion though an ardent desire to excel in theatre, dance and
singing as well as support causes that
are dear to her heart.
Tell us about your background and
your association with the media?
Rama Pandey: I come from a typical
Brahmin family and education runs
in our blood but so does art and music. I have been a communicator right
through childhood. I am a post-graduate and taught for some time but I wanted to go beyond teaching and reach out to more people. After
representing India at the 1971 ‘The Man & His World’ exhibition
in Montreal, I worked with BBC in London for eight years. I
went to Holland on a film-making scholarship and still make

documentaries and serials on children, women and the soul of
Indian heritage.
We are rightly called the first family of the media. My brothers
Piyush Pandey and Prasoon Pandey are well-known advertising
personalities and all my sisters are well-educated and professionally qualified. My sister Ila Arun is
a prolific singer and actor while Tripti
Pandey is a cultural activist and deputy
director, Rajasthan Tourism. My brother’s wife Nita is Vice President, client
servicing at O&M and my doctor sister
Sudha’s daughter Swati is a leading oncologist and Odissi dancer. Her second
daughter Shruti is the country head
of HBO, India. My other sister Hemlata’s daughter Diva is a scholar and an
award-winning painter in Bhopal while
her second, Disha, runs an advertising
agency. Uma’s daughter Ashima looks
after the creative content in the sales
and promotion department of Turner
Entertainment Network across seven
countries while Ila’s daughter Ishita
Arun is an actress and a VJ. My own
son is also talented and this comes from
the atmosphere at home with a lot of intellectual discussions on art and films.
You are a multi talented person who
does so many different things. Tell
us about some of these abilities?
I have had an extensive career of 40 years in diverse fields like
broadcasting, acting/theatre, teaching, writing, programme
presentation, event management and film production and di-
rection at national and international levels. I began my career
as a child artist and my professional experience includes working with DD India and BBC Hindi while my film industry experience includes acting in eight art films and directing 300 TV
films.
I have worked with Doordarshan India as a producer at a time
when the channel was the only source of household entertainment and did some pioneering projects for rural audiences. At
BBC Hindi Service at Bush House London, I contributed regularly to BBC Asian Television and significantly towards some
major field projects of the BBC in Asia.
I am also a writer with several serials, stories, programmes,
films, documentaries to my credit. I have written, produced
and directed several multi-episode serial programmes including Shabash Begum, Suno Kahani and Jaanen Apna Desh and
several hundred tele-films, news capsules and documentaries.
In fact, Jaane Apna Desh, which involves youth and families is
the longest running show that I own with 500 episodes. I have
also written and published Faisle, a collection of true stories of
underprivileged but courageous Muslim women.
Tell us something about your personal life and your life
in Gurgaon?
I am married to Najamus Saqib, a Kashmiri Muslim who has
been so committed to me that he waited for years to marry me.
While my parents loved him they could not deal with societal
pressures and yet handled my love for a man of another religion with great dignity. I had reconciled myself to a single life
because I did not want to hurt my parents and this is when they
sent a letter saying I should marry the man I love which I did
in London in a wedding which was announced on BBC’s Hindi
service.
I admire men who love a woman enough to encourage their
dreams because these are the real ‘mards’ and that is what my
husband is to me.
Gurgaon has been my home for over 12 years. We came here
to enjoy the open feel and the fresh air which no longer exists.
Residents have to make an effort to change the status quo that
does not allow an organised and integrated development plan
for the city. How can we silently watch vested interests raising
religious issues to stall development?
After achieving so much in so many fields, is there any
desire that drives you?

specific routines. Boxing is an art and
they must enjoy it which will increase

The excited screams from the crowd,
attack pe rehna and peeche mat hat, created a thrilling atmosphere when eightyear old Yashwardhan Singh, a student
of Shalom Hills International School,
defeated Nayank Raghav in the boxing
tournament held at Tau Devi Lal stadium recently.
He has been practicing boxing for the
last two years having developed an interest in the sport after watching players
like Mike Tyson, Lumen Chain and our
very own Vijender Singh.
Yashwardhan, who is one of the youngest champions in the city and is preparing for the state level, is not alone. There
are scores of other aspiring youngsters
in Gurgaon who feel that boxing will be
their claim to fame. Ever since Bhiwani
emerged as the Little Cuba of India,
boxing has received a tremendous boost
across Haryana, creating a widespread
interest among the youth for the sport.
Fifteen-year-old Devinder Thakran has
been boxing for nine years now. A Class
X student, he spends at least two hours
a day on fitness routines and boxing
practice at the Tau Devi Lal stadium.
“I love to practice boxing. The game involves a lot of stamina and control. This
has made my life very disciplined and I
look forward to performing well in this
sport,” says Devinder.
For Navin Kumar, a Class XII student,
it was boxer Akhil Kumar who inspired
him to take up the sport on a serious
note. “Boxing was not my sole aim till I
saw Akhil Kumar and Vijender Singh.
They changed my perspective towards
the game. With my father’s unconditional support, boxing has become my topmost priority today,” he says.

says, “After Vijender Singh rose
to such heights, lots of boys
have taken to this sport. Today,
Haryana has a lot more boxing
centers which offer training and coaching facilities. All that we need is the government to take essential steps to perfect
the players as this sport has the caliber
of performing well internationally.”
As a message to all aspiring boxers, Diwarkar stresses the importance of learning and mastering the basics along with
defense, fitness and stamina. “A balanced
combination of all three helps along
with the required training support at
different academies. However, most important aspect still remains hard work
which has no substitute. A five-hour daily routine of die hard practice is what it
takes to reach the levels of a champion,”
he informs. ø

It was a fun day out for both kids and
moms when DLF organised an event
for them packed with lots of activities
at the DLF Phase II Community Centre
recently.
The main idea of the event was to create an enjoyable day while educating the
kids on sensitive issues such as good and
bad touch. The event was divided into
four segments.
The first one was educational wherein
parents and children were given useful information. In today’s world where
sexual and child abuse are soaring high,
it is important to teach children about
good touch (GT) and bad touch (BT). For
this, a workshop was conducted by a professional trainer on GTBT. The trainer
explained the difference between a good
touch and a bad touch and also informed
children how to approach their parents.
Parents were also guided on how to handle and react to such situations.
Other segments included a fashion fiesta, a theme-based fashion show where
moms and kids participated together. A
talent hunt allowed the kids to showcase
their talent through dancing, singing
and acting while other fun activities included a magic show, kids’ disco night,
musical chair and photo booth.
While the kids were busy enjoying their
activities, there were stalls organised for
pampering the moms too that ranged
from nail art and tattoo to hair braiding
and portrait making. There were also
stalls selling accessories and handicrafts
besides one on Tupperware.
After a fun-filled day, the kids were also
handed over parting gifts which ensured
the smiles on their faces and added to
their enjoyment ø

Literary aficionados in the city are
experiencing culture in different shades
and hues with innovative theatrical adaptations that range from Shakespeare’s
Merchant of Venice to Mohan Rakesh’s
Ashaad Ka Ek Din based on the life and
times of Kalidas; from Sophocles’ Antigone to a 21st century rendition of Mirza
Ghalib, all of which are pulling in crowd
in large numbers thanks to a growing
love for theatre.

When this play based on the life of Kalidas was staged at Epicentre recently, an
interested intellectual audience was seen
connecting with the wide range of emotions it portrayed. Even though Ashaad
Ka Ek Din depicted life over 2000 years
ago, the three-act play by Rang Parivartan had the audience glued to their seats
till the end. Based on Chandragupta Maurya’s era, the play was so steeped in literature and history that one hardly expected
it to excite those living in modern times.
And yet this is exactly what Director Ma-
hesh Vashishtha managed to pull off with
much success. While Kalidas’s lover Mallika encouraged him to follow his dreams,
she was heartbroken to find him married
to a sophisticated noblewoman after becoming famous. In the final act, Kalidas
reappears in the village to discover that
Mallika is married with a daughter. In a
touching soliloquy, Mallika says, “Even
if I did not remain in your life, you always
remained in mine. You continued to create
and I believed that I too am meaningful,
that my life is also productive.”

An alumnus of the prestigious National
School of Drama, Director Mahesh Vashishtha has been involved with theatre
since 1968 and founded Rang Parivartan
whose energy is completely driven by 16
theatre enthusiasts who he admits, ‘are
a largely floating group tempted by the
Bollywood call and will make their way
to Mumbai sooner or later’.
RECREATING SHAKESPEARE’S
MAGIC
Director Atul Satya Koushik insists that
Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice has
all the ingredients of a Bollywood potboiler and this is why he decided to adapt
it. First staged at the Shri Ram Center in
Delhi and then at the Epicenter in Gurgaon, this play has got rave reviews for
its depiction, particularly because it is
not just a translation but a real Indianisation. Says Koushik, “I am inspired by a
Maqbool and an Omkara and fascinated
by the emotion, drama, romance and revenge in Shakespeare’s plays”.
Saudagar is based in the Mewar district
of Rajasthan and set in the end of 19th
century. The adaptation recreated the
Shakespearian mood even though the dialogues had a distinctly Rajasthani flourish. Just as Shakespeare builds on the
traditional rivalry between the Christians
and the Jews, the director gives a new spin
to the Rajput-Mughal enmity by depicting
a Muslim moneylender to portray the
character of Shylock as a jingoistic old
man who hates the guts of the Rajputs.
A presentation of The Films & Theatre
Society, Saudagar had a rich background
score with Hindi songs composed by Ravi
Rao and costumes designed by celebrity
designer Mumtaz Khan in Bhopal. Garnished with light hearted jokes and peppered with rustic folk music, Saudagar
managed to depict Rajputana grandeur
even as it paid a loyal tribute to the English original. Thrilled by the audience response, director Atul Satya Koushik said,
“Adapting a William Shakespeare play is
not easy at all. Every word written by him
is a responsibility on you as it demands
justice. In this adaptation, my constant endeavor was to keep Shakespeare alive. ” ø

icture Mirza Ghalib back in the galis
of Ballimaaran. The India Pierrot’s
Troupe looked at this scenario in its
play Ghalib in New Delhi staged recently.
The poet’s experiences as he steps
into the hustle bustle of the ISBT to
share a servant quarter with a student
from Bihar in Delhi University and his
dejection when the land lady recognises him only through the voice of ghazal
king Jagjit Singh who composed and
sang his immortal lines are full of comedy and satire.
Directed by Sayed Alam, the play also
showcased how contemporary Delhi
rubs onto him as his famous tehzeeb
witnesses a change from lijiye to lo
and finally to le. From travelling in blue
line buses, defending himself from
Delhi Police, speaking Haryanvi to finally transforming into Bermudas and
T-shirts from his traditional libaas, the
play presents Ghalib’s hilarious journey.
“The role played by Mirza Ghalib was
a superb piece of acting. The way he
had a hunch and carried his old box in
his hands, he truly fitted the character,”
said Navin Kumar from the audience.
An ancient milieu in a modern context
was a good combination and the audience connected well to the satire.

A three-day talent nurturing programme was organised from May 22-24,
2014 in Gurgaon. Over 162 scholars participated in the summer camp while 210
parents of scholars attended sessions on

‘Positive Parenting’.
Group Dynamic Sessions: Separate
sessions were conducted by eminent &
acknowledged professionals, counsellors
and artists for students in four groups
(Classes I-III, IV –VI, VII-IX and X-XII).
The workshops covered topics such as
career guidance, aptitude testing, soft
skills and training in subjects such as
leadership in everyday life, language as
a strong tool, goal setting, time management, memory and concentration, art
and craft and value education.
Best Parenting Techniques Work-
shop: A one-day programme was organised for the parents of scholars, attended by over 210 parents and conducted by
Gulraj Shahpuri, a well known youth
worker and corporate trainer and Pervin Malhotra, a renowned career counsellor. The sessions focused on best parenting techniques, career guidance and
counseling.
Aptitude Testing & Career Guidance:
Over 30 scholars of Classes X and XII underwent aptitude test and their results
were discussed with the career counsellors in the presence of their parents.
Personal Counselling Sessions: Oneto-one psychological counselling was also
conducted by professional counsellors.
Mentor-Mentee Interaction: DLF
Sahyog volunteers met up with their
mentees along with the officials of the
scholar guidance cell.
Talent Fest: An hour long cultural
performance was organised to foster
the innate talents of the scholars in arts
and culture.
Save Our Planet Drive & Tree Plantation: A session was conducted for the
students of Classes VII to XII to make
them aware of the various issues regarding environment and climate change.
DLF CARES Annual Meet 2014: Annual meet of “DLF CARES” family was
also organised on May 24, 2014 in Gurgaon, attended by over 400 stakeholders

MD (Psychiatry) is Consultant
Psychiatrist and Director, Department of Mental Health and
Behavioral Sciences at Fortis Hospitals. In
conversation with DLF City News, he explains the importance of parental support,
assertiveness training and positive self esteem.
How do we identify stress in school
children? What are the causes?
Stress in children can often manifest in
behavioural changes. Withdrawing from
friends, increasingly aggressive behaviour, frequent crying spells, sudden, unexplained decline in the child’s academic
performance and changes in the child’s
eating and sleeping patterns are indicators.
Academics, the rising level of competition and the pressure to excel have become an enormous burden on students.
At the same time, conflicts amongst peers
and the pressures to ‘fit in’ can give rise to
feelings of isolation and distress. Difficult
family dynamics at home may also contribute to the stress experienced by some
children. I feel due to the rising stress
placed on these children, they aren’t
equipped with the necessary life skills to
cope with these demands.
How can we help children deal with
peer pressure?
Peer pressure can only be dealt with by
giving students training in assertiveness.
Students need to be taught the difference
between being passive, aggressive and assertive, and being able to say ‘no’ in a way
that does not compromise their dignity or
that of the other. Assertiveness is a life skill
that can be learnt and mastered through
practice. At the same time, I think we need
to work on the individual self-esteem of

every child. Students become more susceptible to peer pressure when their own
sense of self is weak. Enhancing the selfesteem of the child will ensure that they’re
more confident of the choices they make
for themselves.
How do exams contribute to stress?Can
we encourage competitiveness and
good grades without undue pressure?

ADVERSE AFFECTS
Exams need to be a yardstick to evaluate a student’s expertise in that particular
area, not an evaluation of the student’s
worth, or a means to compare two children. Academics need to be given as much
or as little importance as every other cocurricular activity and students should be
encouraged to find their own interest and
strength areas. Exams by their very nature
needn’t contribute to unhealthy stress. In
fact, exams, if viewed in the right way, are
a great way for students to learn how to
organise themselves, work hard through
adversities and cope with successes and
failures.
What is the role of the parents and
teachers in contributing to improved
Mental Health?
A parent or teacher, who is uncritical
and understanding of the child, can play
a tremendous role in enhancing the selfesteem of children. It’s essential to have an
open and honest communication channel
with the child, and to be their go to person
be it for information or for sharing their experiences and difficulties. Many risk behaviours that adolescents indulge in could be
avoided if a responsible adult simply spoke
to them about it first.
As a significant adult, we also need to be
extremely careful that we do not in any
way draw comparisons between children;
doing so can have terrible effects on the
selfesteem of the child. Each student
must be appreciated for their individual
personality and encouraged to pursue
their interests and strengths, rather than
be reprimanded and disciplined every
step of the way.
It’s also important to be aware of the
signs and symptoms of emotional distress
in order to be able to address the child’s
concerns or to be able to take them to a
counsellor if required.

from the second floor of DLF CyberHub
were enthralling enough to pull us towards the interestingly designed Sutra
Gastropub. Comfortable seating and
charming interiors that flaunt revolving
sutra turntables caught our fancy. But it
was the carefully selected menu which
ensured that the DLF CyberHub continues its innovative gastronomic trail.
The manager proffered two menus that
had unlimited options under the beverage
and wine category. Recommending the
specials, he suggested the Sutra Levita-

chef ’s talent was visible in the choice
of starters - Spinach florets served with
mushrooms and feta piping and the interesting cheese parcels. The floret is an
innovative take on a spinach pakora and
is the chef ’s own creation. The filo pastry
packaged with cheese teams up a European flavour with a tangy yet sweet red
chilli sauce turning it almost oriental.
For seafood starters, the grilled prawns
with harissa spicing on a deliciously
seasoned bed of greens and salads is an
interesting fusion, which we followed up
with the traditional chicken skewers with
barbecue sauce.
From Continental to Mediterranean to
Indian and Italian, the main course offered much variety. We chose the bacon
wrapped chicken breast with a filling of
sausage and cheese. The Spinach and
Ricotta Ravioli with Puttanesca sauce
was a contrast with its tender, delicate
and thoughtful seasoning which maintained its Italian roots and was only mildly perked up for the Indian palate.
For dessert, we sampled two of the Sutra
specialities. The brownie was surprisingly delightful as just one tiny slash with
a spoon got the juices flowing and how.
The tiramisu delicately combined coffee
and liqueurs to give it just that zing that
makes it a distinctive dessert.
South Indian Twists At Vaango
Dosa, idli and dal vada have donned interesting avatars for August. In one version, the soft and fluffy signature idli is
being served with a flourish of curds and
seasonings while in another, it is being
dipped in a sweet sour Manchurian sauce
to make for a lip-smacking starter. The
nutritious dal vada has also been given
the street food dressing for that delicious
chaat twist. But the icing on the cake goes
to the dosa, which is being served with an
adventurous filling of chocolate!

Q. What attracted you to this profession and what excites you about food?
I have always loved to eat good food and
was always eager to know what’s for dinner while I was having lunch. I am a Punjabi and ‘I live to eat’. Tasting from the

used to come back home from my swimming and water polo matches and crave
for real good food. Even now if I work
out, I go home and check what’s for dinner cooked by my wife and start digging
in straight from the pot. So, it’s good food
that got me inquisitive to find out how
it’s done and how it could be done better.

eason pumpkin with salt and pepper then
roast by 200 degree until done

1. Take a pan; add ghee, whole spices, gingergarlic paste & saute till golden brown.

minutes and add all the powdered spices,
brown onion, cashewnut & yoghurt paste.

PARADISE ON EARTH
The High Points
Sonamarg: The “Meadow of Gold” is famous for its Thajiwas Glacier. You can hike up to
the glacier and back in around five hours from the highway. If you don’t have so much time
to spare, it’s possible to ride a pony instead, or take a taxi part of the way there and walk.
Gulmarg: The “Meadow of Flowers” is India’s version of a ski resort and is situated less
than a two-hour-drive east of Srinagar. If you’re not into skiing, you still must allow the
gondola or the world’s highest cable car, to whisk you more than 13,000 feet up Mount
Apharwat for outstanding views.
Pahalgam: The “Valley of Shepherds”, is about a three-hour drive from Srinagar and is
near the departure point for pilgrims going on the Amarnath Yatra. With its fresh flowing
Lidder River and surrounding snow-capped hills, you can enjoy pony rides which costs five
hundred rupees or less in off-season depending on your bargaining and can even go as
high as Rs 1500 in peak season. Pahalgam has many restaurants, dhabas, coffee shops
and guest houses and ativities around Pahalgam include golfing, trout fishing, and river
rafting making it a popular destination for adventure tourism.
Yousmarg: A sprawling meadow around two hours drive southwest of Srinagar with the
highlight being the Doodh Ganga river, which is reached by a picturesque 30 minute walk
along a forested trail down a hill. The town of Charar-i-Sharief is home to one of the most
holy Sufi Muslim shrines in India and some of the biggest halwa parathas you’ll ever see!

With flowers in spring and snow in
winter, the Kashmir Valley is not just the
Switzerland of India but also a true paradise for visitors.
We preferred to hit the road instead of
flying to allow for that lingering memory
of locations that came our way in the
run up to the Udhampur railway station,
beyond Jammu. From Delhi’s scorching heat, the beautiful valley offered the
much-needed respite even though we
encountered a nasty surprise, when, immediately after stepping out of the train,
a travel agent came rushing to us with
“Taxi Chahiye kya?”. On enquiry about
the cost, pat came the reply - Rs. 7500! We

soon discovered that he was charging us
three times the normal rates which hovered at about Rs. 2500 during non-peak
season. With no other option, we boarded
the van on offer and set off to encounter
a beautiful journey studded with sights
worth seeing.
Throughout the 111-km long journey, we
loved the curls and the curves, the skyrocketing mountains, the greenery, the
water flowing down the hills and mixing
with the rivers even though most were
less than capacity as it was yet to rain.
Our first halt on the way to Srinagar
was Banihal, a small suburb with a
population which seemed to be all of a
few thousands. What made it important
on the J&K map was its railway station
to connect to Srinagar, a one-and-a-half
journey on a 65-km track. The route
also has an 11-km long tunnel that the
train crosses in about 9 minutes. Here,
we changed our mind, decided to abandon the cab and continue to Srinagar
on train. After we passed through the
tunnel, we went past fields where farmers were sowing paddy as the stretch
through which the train meanders is a
largely plain region in what is otherwise
a hilly terrain.
When we got off the train at the Srinagar railway station, we noticed a heavy
deployment of the police and paramilitary forces. If the J&K police guarded
the area inside the stations including the
trains, the CRPF stayed put at the gates
of the station outside. It was similar to
what we had witnessed at the Udhampur station earlier. Casual inquiries had
revealed that a massive project connecting Jammu and Udhampur via a rail network was underway and was likely to be
complete by 2018. Incidentally, Udhampur is the last station on the Northern
Railway network and it does not have a
further link towards Srinagar.
The highlight of our stay in Srinagar
was the houseboat on the Dal Lake and
that too across the lake. It meant that we
had to reach our houseboat only through
a boat – a service which comes complimentary for the tourists and may be used
for traversing between the houseboat
and the markets. With a front balcony,
a living room and two bedrooms with attached baths, the stay on the houseboat
was a lifetime experience and the hospitality of the houseboat staff made us
feel truly at home. Another attraction of
our stay was the numerous Shikara rides
which we got to enjoy. Sunset is the ideal
time for enjoying the shikara and some
great photo opportunities also came our
way. The shoreline of Dal Lake is sur-
rounded by hotels, parks, restaurant and
shops selling pashmina shawls, papiermâché products and carpets. Small knickknacks can be bought from the floating
markets which are the shikaras selling
from houseboat to houseboat. Srinagar is
well known for handicraft items like silk
carpets and hand bags and shops which
are registered with government of Jammu and Kashmir have a fixed price.
Some of the tourist attractions we enjoyed included Pahalgam, Patnitop, Gulmarg and other high-altitude locations
where we enjoyed the sight of snow as
well.
We returned the same way we had gone
in, taking the train from Srinagar to Banihal, hiring a cab to reach the Udhampur
railway station and travelling back home

The atmosphere was light-hearted
as standup comedian and Bollywood actor Vir Das visited Gurgaon’s Kingdom
of Dreams with co-actors Anindita and
Natasha to promote his latest film Amit
Sahni ki List.
The happy-go-lucky actor shared his association with Kingdom of Dreams and
Wizcraft, who have been an integral part
of his IIFA journey and enabled him to

host the IIFA awards last year. His satirical take on life and quirky sense of humour were all on display as he interacted
with DLF City News and even agreed to
croon a song from his latest film.
Q. Tell us about your role in the film
Amit Sahni Ki List? Is this a typical
filmi role?
This is a fun film based on a frustrated
guy who attempts to woo and win his
dream girl. I play the main lead as Amit
Sahni, a quirky investment banker
searching for the woman of his dreams.
After a painful break-up during his teenage days, Amit has noted down all the
traits that he is looking for in the perfect
woman or Miss Right and every time he
goes out on a date, he secretly checks to
see if his date matches to the list. The
twists and turns that take place on ac-
count of the list and his quest for Miss
Right make this an interesting comedy.
I don’t like the typical glossy films
where there is a guy and a girl against
the backdrop of the mountains. It has to
be crazy and quirky for me to fit in. From
Delhi Belly to Pyaar Ke Side Effects and
now Amit Sahni ki List, I have been playing crazy characters and having a great
time. I think there is great comedy when
the protagonists are stuck in ridiculous
situations. Jab kisiki band bajti hai to
comedy hoti hai.
Q. What is your
personal take on Indian
marriages?
The Indian marriage system is something that I believe in. Once a couple
settles into it, marriage is finally about
friendship and if you can’t find yourself
the right partner and your parents can
help you, then I am all for it! So marriage
is great and statistics say Indian marriages last longer!
Q. Tell us something about your personal journey from a standup comic
to a Bollywood star?
I was born in Dehradun and raised in
Africa, where I moved in with my parents when my dad joined a food processing company in Lagos, Nigeria. I went to
Sanawar, then Delhi Public School and
for a short while to Sri Venkateswara
College after which I went abroad for
Bachelors in Theatre at Knox in Illinois.
I started doing the amateur circuit in
stand-up comedy and came back to India
to do a show for the Times of India at the
Habitat Centre in New Delhi in 2003 and
soon hosted the Times Food Guide awards
and became a corporate comedian. In
2007, I wrote and performed a stand-up
comedy called ‘Walking on Broken Das.’
Everyone knows that one needs a godfather to survive in the industry but very
few people know how I got that opportunity. I made DVDs of my performance
and distributed six copies to different
video libraries. Two of those DVDs
landed up at the desk of Aditya Chopra
and Aamir Khan Productions and I was
called in for two auditions. Within six
weeks, both Badmaash Company and
Delhi Belly happened.
Q. Since you are both a standup comic
as well as an actor, which is your preferred role?
Comedy has been my gateway to films
and means a lot to me. Being intrinsic to
my profile, I don’t intend to or desire to
leave comedy out so I just make sure that
this talent is utilised in my acting also.
Q. Comedy is thriving in India and
political spoofs are getting more and
more irreverent. What is your comment on the latest comedy scene?
The more irreverent the better! I agree
with you that comedy is doing well and
political spoofs are getting the maximum
laughs though I daresay it still depends
on who is in power and how much censorship happens.
Personally, I am a news junkie and I
find great comedy in politics. My favourite show on television is ‘The Newshour’
because I find the panel extremely entertaining. Not only is it really funny but
it’s an uncensored, flustered version of
people. To my mind, the best version of
people is when they are slightly uncomfortable, yet they have to say what is on
their mind.
Q. What are your impressions about
Gurgaon?
All the latest brands and all the finest
international dining options are available here. The buildings are all glass, so
yeah; you can check yourself out on the
Convergys building as you travel up and
down. In fact, I am quite sure that if you
were to look at Gurgaon from the top, you
wouldn’t see anything because the glass
would just reflect it all back.
Seriously, Gurgaon is great. It is a new
and a young city. My parents stay in Noida and what I notice is that unlike Delhi
and Noida where all the oldies live, Gurgaon has a young and peppy population.
I think this is an amazing place with
so much potential and to see the lovely
Kingdom of Dreams is really the icing on
the cake. ø

run’’. Actor Rajkummar Rao means business. From the time he made his debut
with the 2010 experimental film Love Sex
aur Dhoka to the recent biopic Shahid
which fetched him a National Award,
this young man has made it clear that he
is an actor to watch out for. What makes
him stand apart is the fact that he does

moving up the ladder with power-packed
performances. And, that’s what he intends doing in the days ahead too!
Having received rave reviews for his
acting prowess in the latest CityLights,
the intense actor is now geared up for
some more exciting projects, including
the comeback venture of veteran director Ramesh Sippy.
In conversation with DLF City News,
the actor, who has been born and brought
up in Gurgaon, talks about his filmy
journey while sharing his love for the
Millennium City.
Q. How has life been post Shahid and
a National Award? Is it raining offers?
lt’s still the same but yeah it feels great to have a National Award and for our film to get so much recognition
everywhere. I still get messages from so many people saying that how much they loved Shahid. Yeah there are a
couple of offers and very diverse scripts from love stories
to thriller to comedy. I am thoroughly enjoying being part
of so many different genres.
Q. You have got great reviews for CityLights. How
different was the movie from Shahid, considering
the fact you were working with Hansal Mehta for
the second time?
It’s a very different story. I feel the emotional tragedy was
much more in CityLights than Shahid but Shahid was a responsibility as it was a real life story. For me, it’s always a
delight to work with Hansal sir. We understand each other

Interestingly, Singham Returns has

Rukh. The King Khan not only took

and Rohit, he also visited the sets
of the film recently. Both the actors
seem to have buried all their differences though Ajay was heard saying
there was never a problem between

have always revolved around meaningful or serious subjects. Would you
enjoy acting in a typical Bollywood
masala flick too?
I don’t mind doing anything. I am an actor and I love exploring myself in all the
films. In my upcoming film Dolly ki Doli,
I am doing dance and singing for the first
time. I don’t want to restrict myself to
one genre.
Q. How do you choose your scripts?
I just go with my gut feeling. If a script
excites me as an actor, I just want to be a
part of it. That’s what I have been doing
with all my films.

sir. I have always been a big fan of him
and his films and it’s a really sweet love
story with lots of fun.

Dolly ki Doli with Sonam is done. Then,
there is Focus with Bejoy Nambiar and
a film with Ajay Devgn and Chandan
Arora and lastly Ramesh Sippy sir’s film.
Q. You were born in Gurgaon and finished your schooling there. Any fond
memories you could share with DCN?
I was born and brought up in Gurgaon.

changes have you noticed over these
years?
I visit home once in six months. Gurgaon
is totally changed. Now it’s a different city
altogether and it has changed in front of
my eyes. I left Gurgaon in 2005 to go to
FTII, Pune and now when I go back, I can’t
believe it’s the same city where I used to
roam around in buses and with friends. ø
The Expendables 3
Sylvester Stallone returns with this sequel
to Expendables 2 directed by Patrick Hughes.

he is one Queen who sticks to her words! So, when
Kangana Ranaut was recently approached by a leading
skin care company to endorse their product, the actress
turned down the offer just because the brand required her to
join Twitter. Kangana, who has earlier gone on record to state
that she will not get into any of the social networking sites,
decided to hold on to her stand even though she was reportedly offered a staggering amount for the ad.
In fact, Kangana is one of the few actresses in Bollywood who
has kept herself away from the luring world of ads. “I can’t
sell a lie,” the actress was recently heard quoting in an interview. She also feels strongly against fairness cream ads.
“Making people feel that you don’t get a job or your parents
are stressed because you’re darker, and you go find a tube and
then you turn all fair. It’s all lying. It’s like bringing ourselves
down,” the actress had said

quite a few couples. While actress Scarlett Johansson, who is
dating French journalist Romain Dauriacis, has reportedly finalised a wedding date for next month, actors Charlize Theron and
Sean Penn are reportedly planning a summer wedding in South
Africa (the summer there starts in October).
Scarlett, who is also expecting her first child with Dauriacis, wants
to get married either in her fiance’s native Paris, or in the
Hamptons, where they have been spending most of the summer.
On the other hand, Charlize and Sean want the wedding in South
Africa as that is the home country of Charlize. The couple has been
