TRACK CHAT Oakleigh Go Kart Racing Club www.ogkrc.com.au September 2010 From the Pres I would like to welcome everyone to this month’s Track Chat. As all members would know by now this will be my last welcome to Track Chat as President. It has been a great year to be President of OGKRC and to see such a large amount of racers around on club days and the vast improvements being completed around the track. We have had a year of much racing at OakleighThe 2010 Victorian Open was held very successfully, and we continue to grow Junior Top Guns to being a premier event throughout Australia. I would like to thank all my family, the 2010 committee and the members for the support they have given in 2010. I extend my support and encouragement to the new president and committee for 2011. Wayne Harper President@ogkrc.com.au From The Editor Greetings fellow karters, first of all let me thank you for the positive feedback for my first attempt at Track Chat, it is much appreciated. There have also been suggestions and ideas from a few people too as to what to include, thanks for those and keep them coming. No one is going to laugh at any suggestions or ideas so feel free to send me an email or mention it to me on club day and I will do my best to include your idea. Remember to send any info to mfisher7@three.com.au Thanks also to my little helper last club day – Melina Heraud. Without your help this edition wouldn’t have much content! On behalf of all members I would also like to say thanks to Wayne for the great job he has done filling the position of President of our great club. He has taken the club to another level and the new Pres will have some big shoes to fill. You should feel very proud for what you have done Wayne and I am sure you will be missed. In June Malcolm McLellan took his boys Liam (Rookies#96) and Matthew (Junior National Heavy #71) up North to participate in both the N.T and Q.L.D State Titles. Here is Malcolm’s take on how events unfolded for the boysAfter leaving the cold winter weather in Melbourne we arrived in Darwin where the weather was hot and temperatures averaged around the mid 30's each day. The club was one of the most welcoming in the country. Nothing was a problem and all the members were very helpful in making our stay a very memorable one. Due to the high standard of racing we were about to face, we decided to take Peter Cathcart from CC Racing to help us with set-ups and mentoring the boys. It didn’t take long for both the boys to quickly and easily sort out the track with Peter’s positive encouragement and help. As the week progressed the results were as followed: Liam finished 7th (first heat), 4th (second heat) and 3rd (pre-final). Liam started out of P3 in the final and quickly and smoothly moved to second with approximately five laps to go. Unfortunately contact occurred from a fellow competitor behind him, which forced Liam back to mid pack where he ended up finishing twelfth. Matthew finished 2nd (first heat), 1st (second heat) and 2nd (pre-final). Matthew started from P2 in the final and tried extremely hard to take the lead but it wasn’t to be. He finished second, only a couple of tenths behind the winner, which was a huge achievement especially after completing twenty-one laps. With the racing over, the club in Darwin put on a fabulous spit roast dinner for three hundred people, along with fireworks and an old army blitz with a jet engine on the back. Midgets and Rookies all received a participation trophy. I highly recommend next year making the trip to Darwin, as it is a great winter break, a friendly club and a great opportunity to be part of some memorable State Titles! Matthew McLelland coming home an extremely close 2nd st Liam McLelland crossing the finish line in a well deserved 1 place Our next destination on the calendar was Mackay with over 300 entries and 16 classes entered, however one major difference was that the track was concrete rather than bitumen, which the boys quickly adapted to. Liam qualified on pole, finishing 1st in both heats, however in the pre-final had some contact resulting in Liam having to allow the rest of the field to pass. Once he re-entered the race determination kicked in and from dead last he finished 8th, a fantastic drive. On Sunday Liam had a chore ahead of him, but within the first lap he was already in second place. With three laps to go and leading the race, the kart in second and third had contact, which allowed Liam a break to cross the line first with a healthy margin. Matthew qualified 4th fastest, finished 2nd in both heats and 3rd in the pre-final, resulting in him starting out of P3 in the final. Matthew lead the race throughout the twenty-one laps, consistently having the fastest laps and looked in a good position to win but luck was not on his side. He eventually finished second, just tenths behind the winner but a great result for all his hard work. A great outcome for both McLellan boys! As they always say, “If you can run fast at Oakleigh, you can run fast anywhere”. Oakleigh is a very competitive club, which prepares you for the majority of the races around the Country. And Malcolm I think all the Oak members would have to agree with that statement. Thanks for your article and Congratulations to both the boys. The boys were also stoked to bump into V8 Supercars champ Craig Lowndes at the Airlie Beach Caravan Park. Craig was on his way to Townsville for the V8 Supercar round. From all reports Craig was very friendly and more than happy to talk go karts with the boys, congratulating them on their achievements. (Such a shame he has returned to Holden!! Ed) The boys showing off their hardware to Lowndesy Breaking News Part II As you may recall in last month’s edition of Track Chat, we reported that Chris Heraud had lost so much weight he had to swap from Clubman Superheavy to Clubby Heavy. Well it seems we have not heard the full story. Evidently Chris has been doing a bit more with his time other than jogging, as can be seen in the photo below. Is this Love? That I’m feelin’. Is this Love? That I been searching for? Is this Love? Or am I dreaming? This must be Love………..…great song!! Anyway Love is in the air at Oakleigh with the big teddy bear Steve Polak giving up freedom as we know it and tying the knot with the lovely Julieann. The happy couple got hitched at Killara Estate in Seville surrounded by family and friends. Track Chat would like to say Congratulations to Steve and his new bride, who spent their honeymoon in New Zealand. (Also nice to see you out of a race suit Steve!!) And it seems that lovin’ feelin’ has rubbed off on younger brother Roger, who recently got engaged to Brooke. Congratulations to you both from Track Chat and Oakleigh members. Live it up while you still can Roger!!! Some free advice – when you have a nice new sticker kit you really shouldn’t throw your kart off the end of a straight, especially at a wet and muddy Morwell circuit!! And if you are going to roll your kart, you probably want to try and avoid snapping the steering column, best to snap your body instead, much cheaper.
