« The horse is the elegant, energizing
symbol of Orne’s excellence. Orne
plays in the big leagues in terms of
horses: in training them, breeding
them and equipping them, and in our
performances on the best racecourses.
Orne’s horses regularly come in first
place in the most prestigious races.
The horse is represented in the
Department logo. The equine sector
is a source of work for nearly 6,000
people in Orne.
We thank our breeders, trainers,
drivers and all the professionals who
put their talent and commitment into
this sector.
We thank our champions with their
grace and power: the pounding of
their hoofs is music to our ears.
I invite you to discover them through
this guide. »

Thierry DUVALDESTIN Champion trainer and assistant (La Ferté-Frênel)
Currently preparing the world’s leading trotter. Thierry Duvaldestin, born in L’Aigle
forty-two years ago, is the polyvalent trainer of Ready Cash, the two-time winner of Prix
La Ferté-Frênel
d’Amérique (in 2011 and 2012). He began his career as an apprentice with the Orne-based
trainer Jean-Pierre Dubois. Duvaldestin’s training centre in La Ferté-Frênel accommodates
seventy horses and employs ten people.

The Dubois family
What a family! The father, Jean-Pierre,
who lives in Echauffour, has seen more
than 2,000 victories. One of his sons,
Jean-Etienne (left) of the La Perrière
stud farm in Belfonds, won the Prix
d’Amérique in 1996, among his
1,000 victories. His other son,
Jean-Philippe (right) of the Fresneaux
stud farmin Aunou-sur-Orne, won the
Prix d’Amérique in 2013. His nephews
and grandsons are already preparing
their own careers.
From his training centre of Le Clopin
in Ménil-Bérard, near Moulins-laMarche, Sébastien Guarato produces
pure treasures such as Roxane Griff
(Second place in Prix d’Amérique
2012), Rapide Lebel and Rêve de
Beylev.
Very high-level athletes
Jogging, special diets, spa
treatments… In frequently
unassuming training centres, horses
receive treatment deserving of their
status as high-level athletes.
Take, for example, the Ginai stud
farm, located five km from the
Haras national du Pin. Jacky
Souloy and a team of twenty-four
employees are in charge of 140 stalls
and six tracks. One of the stars here
is Commander Crowe.

The Hallais family
Another great horse-driven family of Orne:
the Hallais (of the Ribardon stud farm
in Neuvy-au-Houlme) have several horses
that have won the famous
Prix de Cornulier on more than one
occasion. Their horse Uppercut du Rib
just won the French national selection
competition in Grosbois.
Joel Hallais is shown here with «Nikita du Rib», the only
mare to have successively won “Criterium des 3 ans”
in 2004 followed by “Criterium des 4 ans” the next year.
On January 29, 2012, three horses
trained in Orne mounted the Prix
d’Amérique podium: Ready Cash
(first prize), trained by Thierry
Duvaldestin; Roxane Griff (second
prize) trained by Sébastien Guarato;
and The Best Madrick (third prize)
trained and driven by Jean-Étienne
Dubois.
Jean-René Goujeon
The Prix d’Amérique record-holder
Jean-René Gougeon, a trainer-driver
born in Vrigny in 1928 and who died
in Argentan in 2008, is still the most
famous French driver in history.
His legendary horses, Roquépine,
Bellino II and Ourasi, brought him
to triumph.

international
Orne’s thoroughbred breeders
are world-renowned, and they
export to leading countries
such as England, Ireland and
the United States. Orne is the
second largest producer
of galloping racehorses in all
of France, with 1,600 mares.

The other great strength of Orne’s breeding is galloping, for which it is internationally
renowned and has a strong influence in foreign countries. The stud farms
specialising in breeding thoroughbreds are numerous, and often play central roles
in large horse markets such as that of Deauville.

Orne’s thoroughbred stud farms once
again set themselves apart in August
of 2013 at the famous yearling sales
of Deauville: 40% of the colts presented
there were bred in Orne, and Le Grand
Chêne-Coulonces Consignment stud
farm based in Survie made a record
sales figure with a filly sold at
e 1,500,000. (See also pages 8-9).

history
© David Commenchal
Orne’s stud farms regularly make
history in the greatest international
galloping races. Here are some recent
examples.
• Haras des Capucines (La Cochère)
This stud farm has met with remarkable success in France and abroad.
It bred Flotilla and Zagora, winners of
the 2012 Breeders’ Cup in the United
States, considered the international
thoroughbred championship.
The other great strength
of Orne’s breeding is
galloping, for which it is
internationally renowned.
• Haras du Mézeray (Ticheville)
Remains in the top ten commercial stud
farms of France, and ranked among
the top five in sales at Deauville in 2013.
• Haras de la Reboursière
et de Montaigu (Nonant-le-Pin)
An exceptional success in flat racing,
especially in obstacles, with horses
such as Vanilla Crush, Laskaline, Roi de
Trêve, and others. Its stallion Martaline
is very sought-after.
• Haras de la Louvière (Mahéru)
Steady on at a very high level, in France
and abroad, producing very highperformance horses (in 2013:
Dastarthon, Lestalk in Paris, Ectot,
and others). • Haras d’Omméel
This stud farm produced a phenomenon,
Toronado, who made a name for himself
in two group 1 races in England in 2013,
winning the Sussex Stakes and coming in
in second in the St James’s Palace Stakes.
• Haras de Nonant-le-Pin
A pure stud farm which has produced
two remarkable horses in the last two
years: Storm of Saintly, winner of Prix
Ferdinand Dufaure in Auteuil in 2013;
and Saonois, winner of Jockey Club
in Chantilly in 2012.

galore
Orne boasts no fewer than
2,500 trotter, thoroughbred,
horseback riding, Percheron
and pony ranches. Every year,
new champions are born here,
and sometimes they go on
to become legends.
Royal Dream, is the Orne-born Alezan trotter who took home the 2013 Grand Prix d’Amérique,
the «world trotting championship». Prepared in Jean-Philippe Dubois’ racing stable in
Aunou-sur-Orne, the horse is preparing to defend its title in January of 2014. He is renowned
for his courage and sprinting talent.

Orne nurtures promising
up-and-comers in various
disciplines. At the approach
of the 2014 Alltech FEI World
Equestrian Games in Normandy,
the Orne Departmental Council
has reinforced its athletic
partnership with high-level
riders from the area.
Renaud Vinck, France’s 2012 and
2013 vice-champion in combined
driving, is currently preparing for the
world championships to be held on
September 21st and 22nd in Lumuhlen,
Germany. This up-and-coming athlete
supported in 2013 by the Orne
Departmental Council works at the
Haras national du Pin as a training
manager in driving and drafting.
He has replaced Louis Basty, a former
member of the French four-horse team
who held this position at the Haras
national du Pin for thirty-two years.

Healing waters. Céline and Jean-Yves Lhérèté, who run the Sassy stud farm, are experts in caring
for hurt horses just like they would humans. In 2004, they created an equine balneotherapy centre
that has become a European reference. For horses needing post-operative care, healing their
wounds, or simply getting back in shape, this well-equipped centre accommodates some hundred
horses every year. It features a pool, a treading pool and two solariums, among much else.

at tourists.
These equestrian ranches and qualified
equestrian centres offer something

cross-country, and show jumping.
As part of the 2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian
Games in Normandy, Haras national du Pin will host:
• Dressage: this discipline is a succession of
compulsory movements that test the horse’s
obedience, flexibility and rider compatibility.
• Cross-country: a circuit of 45 fixed natural
obstacles spread over a distance of 6,500 m
is covered at an average speed of 35km/h.

Did you say «eventing»? «The 2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian
Games in Normandy are an opportunity
to imagine a new future,» states
Alain Lambert, the president of Orne
Departmental Council.
Indeed, since 2012, a great deal of work
has been undertaken at Haras national
du Pin. The projects include a new
cross-country trail and dressage paddock,
as well as the renovation of historic
buildings.
«These investments, partially funded by
the Departmental Council, will make Orne
a platform for other international events
in the future,» explains Alain Lambert.
Another substantial project resulting
from the World Equestrian Games is the
creation of the first international horse
school in all of France, to be inaugurated
in 2015 at Haras national du Pin.
This training centre will accommodate
international delegations to attend horse
racing vocational training as starters, track
marshals, finish line judges, and the like.

The event of the century. On August 28, 29 and 30, 2014, the horse world will zero in on
Haras national du Pin for the dressage and cross-country horse trials of the 2014 Alltech
FEI World Equestrian Games in Normandy. The cross-country event, to take place over
a distance of 6,500 m, will probably be the biggest event of the century for the site.
50,000 spectators are expected.
