Taxation vs Growth
Publisher’s Note
Dear readers,
With the Ministry of Tourism all set to increase the total number of hotel rooms to 190,000 (approx.) in
star-category from the existing 110,000 (approx.), the Indian hospitality industry is today standing on
the threshold of a massive supply boom. While some fear a situation of demand-supply misbalance,
others feel that the growing supply will create its own demand. Well, whatever the future holds only
time will tell, but in the meantime, do keep reading our quarterly HRANI Magazine and let us know
your feedback on the same.

Message
President’s message
It is high time that the Government should
implement nationwide goods and service tax and
further trim fuel to give boost to the sector.
Dear Colleagues,
I
feel elated writing this message as the 2nd
HRANI Convention has been fixed for
October 27 – 28, 2013, and will be taking
place at the very plush Pullman Gurgaon
Central Park, Gurgaon. I hope not only to get
a good attendance of industry people at the
convention but to also address the growing
concerns of our fraternity.
The theme of the Convention is titled as
‘Hospitality Industry-Shaping the Future
Growth’. The convention will be inaugurated
by Shri Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Hon’ble Chief
Minister of Haryana, while Shri Parvez Dewan,
Hon’ble Secretary Tourism, Government of
India will be joining us. We will also be blessed
by H.H. Sri Sri Ravi Shankar with an exclusive
session on second day i.e. 28th October, 2013.
The early bird discount on the registration
can be availed till September 30, 2013 and I
anticipate your active participation and cordial
support in all our endeavours. I am also
delighted to share with you, the solidarity in
our fraternity and the fact that we as an industry
always come together to collectively fight a
concern. FHRAI and its regional associations
HRANI, HRAWI and SIHRA recently made a
contribution of `52 lakh towards Uttarakhand
Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. We at the
associations are committed to playing a role
in nation building by providing assistance to
those most in need of a helping hand, through
our own initiatives as well as in partnership
with the Central and State Governments.
Tourism serves as a pivotal driver of
sustainable economic growth and employment
generation in Uttarakhand. Though the
sector has now been dealt a severe blow, at
this juncture, we request the Government to
prepare an action plan and give comprehensive
relief package to the Uttarakhand industry
to overcome the adverse impact. We, at the
HRANI promise to extend our full support to
4
HRANI Hospitality | October 2013
the Government to ensure that Uttarakhand
steadily returns to the high growth trajectory,
which had been previously envisioned.
The industry is facing the challenges which
prove to be a limiting factor in its all growth.
Both the Central & State Governments have
been constantly taxing the industry in form of
Luxury Tax, VAT, toll taxes on transportation
and Service tax. Tax collection and its utilization
are very crucial for any economy, but the basis
of taxation has to be simplified and justified to
all concerned. We also have issues with TRAI
over fixation of Broadcasters.
The agenda is broad but open to all. Let
us all work together towards achieving our
ultimate goals with a united team and cordial
work culture.
I take this opportunity to inform all of
you that Ms. Renu Thapliyal Asst. Secretary
General has been promoted as the Secretary
General of HRANI w.e.f. September 27, 2013
and has been entrusted with the above task.
Please join me in wishing her the best in
her new assignment & challenges.
It is high time that the Government should
implement nationwide goods and service tax
and further trim fuel to give boost to the sector.
You must be aware that ten national hotel and
tourism industry bodies have come together to
form a NASSCOM-styled tourism association
called Federation of Associations in Indian
Tourism and Hospitality (FAITH).
FAITH has been formed with a aim to
address and collectively brainstorm on the
macro dynamics of the industry to ensure
tourism gets its rightful place in
India’s growth story.
FAITH is being headed by
Mr. NakulAnand as President
and its working committee
for the year 2013-14 has
been formed. We hope
that FAITH intended as
‘one common voice’
for the industry, will
be successful to take
up critical tourism
issues with the
Government.

Guest Service Gold
Seminar-a great success
A seminar on Guest Service Gold was organised recently at KK Royal Hotel, Jaipur in association
with Hotel and Restaurant Association of Rajasthan (HRAR) and American Hotel and Lodging
Educational Institute (AHLEI).
A
moment of Guest Service ‘Gold’ does
not involve one particular skill, character
trait or talent. Rather, it is about engaging
your guests, unlocking what they want or need, and
connecting with them to make their stay unique. It
is a combination of vital elements which creates a
level of guest service above & beyond the ordinary
and which will immortalise the property in the minds
and hearts of your guests … forever.
Golden rules of
Guest Service
• Authenticity - keeping it real
• Intuition - read the need
• Empathy - use your heart
• Champion - be a guest hero
• Delight - provide a surprise
• Delivery - follow through
• Emotional connection

Cover Story
The challenges of the growing
tourism and hospitality industry
The Government of India needs to work towards meeting the critical demands of the tourism
industry that contributes an estimated `94, 487 crore towards foreign exchange, around 6.4 per
cent to the GDP and 7.8 per cent towards total employment.
I
ndia is one of the top tourism destinations
in Asia, according to a CNN global travel
survey. The country has received 3.3 million
foreign tourists during the period January to June
2013. The WTO (World Travel Organisation)
predicts that India will receive 25 million tourists
by year 2015. The Indian tourism sector needs an
urgent image makeover and higher investment
in infrastructure, including through publicprivate partnership (PPP) mode to capitalise
on opportunities provided by overall growth in
world tourist arrivals, according to the Economic
Survey 2012-2013.
Serious challenges
With the currency falling, soaring inflation
increasing debt compounded by natural
disasters, the fiscal situation seems challenging.
The hotel sector is inherently capital intensive
and especially sensitive to the cyclical volatility
in the economic and business environment. In
recent years, we have seen project costs rise
manifold, driven primarily by the exorbitant
price of land in our cities. A multitude of
external factors, such as rising interest
rates, inordinate delays in securing requisite
regulatory approvals and an overall economic
slowdown had a combined adverse impact on
the viability of several newly commissioned
and under construction projects across the
country.
Taxation - The major hurdle in the
growth
Travel and tourism in India is a high-taxed
industry, which makes India expensive as a
tourist destination. This is affecting the growth
of the industry in India and India is losing out
to other low-cost destinations. Inbound tourism
is the one most affected. Various taxes are
levied across the entire industry right from tour
operators, transporters, airline industry to hotels
and these include service tax, luxury tax, tax on
transportation, tax on aviation turbine fuel (airline
10 HRANI Hospitality |
October 2013
industry), and various taxes on transportation.
In addition, these tax rates tend to vary across
different states in the country.
Infrastructure Status
The government’s unwillingness to give industry
status to the hotel sector is another noteworthy
issue. This has deprived hotels of accessing loans
at lower rates of interest, which in turn retards the
growth of hotels thereby preventing hoteliers from
further expansion.

Carlson Rezidor targeting 100
operational hotels by 2015
Emanating warmth not just
through his smile but also his
conduct, K B Kachru, Chairman,
Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group,
is one of the most humble
hospitality veterans today who
takes pride in understanding
the hospitality potential in
India long before the competitors
could fathom. Pick a city
that you feel has potential
for a hotel and guess what,
you will already find on the
many Carlson brands enjoying
monopoly there!
lPriyanka Saxena
T
hough 2012 was a challenging year for Indian
hospitality, Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group
managed to achieve its targets in terms of
opening new hotels. It also signed management
contracts for 10 new hotels last year, going on to prove
that come what may the group will stick to achieving
its short-term as well as long-term targets. “There are
bigger challenges looming large for 2013-14 with
uncertainty hanging in the air,” announces Kachru
when we meet him to get a sense of where the fornow booming business is headed in the near future.
The impending elections will have a rub-off effect and
cause delays in obtaining various permissions, licenses
and so on, he points out, adding that any policy changes
will now have to wait till the new government comes
up. He also minces no words when he says that the
budget this year was a huge disappointment. “It is sad
to note that the industry is still considered to be an
industry of the elitists by our government that
ignores its immense employment potential
and to bring in foreign exchange.” It’s high
time now that tourism and hospitality are
given due recognition in India, he says.
Carlson has been focusing on
its two major brands – Radisson and
Country Inn & Suites in the past,
but it will shift its focus now more
towards the mid-segment cities.

October 2013
“We collaborate with the tour operators and work
closely with the travel trade. In return, we get good
support from them. We established a presence in India
when others had not and that works in our favour,”
he explains. Currently the group has 62 operational
hotels while another 40 are under constructions in
various source markets. The strategy seems to focus
not just on one segment but try and tap various source
markets through a variety of brands. “Our aim to be
where the business is,” Kachru adds.
The veteran fears a demand-supply misbalance
and strongly believes that in order for the tourism in
India to grow, infrastructure has to improve. With the
aim to have 100 operational hotels by 2015 and 150
operational hotels by 2020, the Carlson Rezidor Group
is leaving no stone unturned in its efforts to meet the
target. It has tie-ups with 26 hotel schools and is the
founder promoters of IIMT. The group also facilitates
movement of staff within the group’s various brands.
The portfolio of the Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group
includes more than 1,300 hotels, a global footprint
spanning 81 countries and territories, a powerful
set of global brands (Radisson Blu, Radisson, Park
Plaza, Park Inn
by
Radisson,
Country Inns & Suites by Carlson and Hotel Missoni).
In most of the group’s hotels, guests can benefit from
the loyalty program ClubCarlsonSM, one of the most
rewarding loyalty programs in the world. The Carlson
Rezidor Hotel Group and its brands employ more than
80,000 people.
Before joining Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group,
South Asia, Kachru was the head of Ashok Group
of Hotels, owned by the India Tourism Development
Corporation. An industry veteran, Kachru is an active
member of various committees, including the National
Tourism Advisory Committee. He has been on the
board of directors for the Tourism Corporation of state
governments in Jammu and Kashmir, Puducherry
and Madhya Pradesh, and on the board of Governors
of the Institute of Hotel Management in New Delhi.
Kachru has also been an Executive Member of
several associations, including the Pacific Asia Travel
Association (PATA) India Chapter, the American
Society of Travel Agents of India, and the Federation
of Hotel and Restaurant Association of India.
“Hospitality industry has moved ahead in all
spheres. It has learned to adapt to new dynamics
and has certainly become more global now. The
expectations and standards of delivery have changed
and grown manifold,” he says.
According to Kachru, given the prevailing
scenario in hospitality today where the guests are
spoilt for choice, it is very important to offer value
for money to the clients. “The mantra is to exceed
the expectation of the guests and develop a level of
trust with them. In India, f&b helps you position your
hotel. We too are focusing extensively on f&b and are
coming up with new and innovative ideas, of which,
Indyaki at Radisson Blu Paschim Vihar with live
cooking counters is one example,” he says.
The veteran feels that the problem today is of
integrated development. “We have opened properties
in some unconventional destinations and they all
are doing well. There is huge potential
in the India market you need to
have a vision to see it. There
are challenges, such as
HR, infrastructure, which
have and will always be
there. As long as they
are tackled well, Indian
hospitality industry
will continue to
boom,” concluded
Kachru.

Fresh, spirited and youthful,
Lemon Tree welcomes you to their world
Operating over 21 hotels in
14 cities with 2600 rooms and
over 3000 employees, Lemon
Tree, undoubtedly, is one of
India’s fastest growing chain of
upscale, midscale and economy
hotels. With the firm belief of
offering customers value for
money options, the hospitality
brand has fast established its
name in the hospitality arena.
Rahul Pandit, President and
Executive Director, The Lemon
Tree Hotel Company, shares
more details.
lPriyanka Saxena
L
emon Tree Hotels has established a strong
and unique position in the minds of the
consumers, which is evidenced from the
fact that 16 hotels (operating for one year+) from
the 21 existing were awarded the TripAdvisor
Certificate of Excellence in 2012 and eight hotels
with the MakeMyTrip.com Platinum Pick Award.
Both these accolades are truly valuable as they
reflect consumers’ feedback and choice.
“Fresh, spirited and youthful, we are India’s
fastest growing chain of upscale, midscale and
economy hotels. We currently own and operate 21
hotels in 14 cities. This speedy growth has made
the group the third largest hotel chain in India by
owned rooms, currently,” shares Rahul.
By 2015-16, the company will own and
operate over 4000 rooms across most of the major
cities in India including Ahmedabad, Aurangabad,
Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Chennai, Ghaziabad,
Gurgaon, Goa, Hyderabad, Indore, Jaipur, East
Delhi, Muhamma (Kerala), Mumbai, New Delhi
and Pune.
Speaking on the USP of the brand he says, “I
believe the over-arching USP for the Lemon Tree
Company brand portfolio is unbeatable valuefor-money at each price point – from the upscale
Lemon Tree Premier to the midscale Lemon
Tree Hotels and most certainly for the economy
Red Fox Hotels. The fact that consumers endorse
these brands and have made them their ‘brand of
choice’ is clear from the TripAdvisor Certificate
Excellence and the MakeMyTrip.com Platinum
Pick Award mentioned earlier,” adding, “Growth
is on the agenda again through new hotels – our
flagship Lemon Tree Premier and Red Fox Hotel
at Delhi Airport. Consolidating and expanding
business on the brand website through a relaunched, more consumer friendly and intuitive
website and booking engine and speedily spreading
the network across India through the management
vertical – Carnation Hotels. The marketing strategy
is to build the consumer base through trial, deliver
an unparalleled rewards program and bring to
consumers a product-service offering that gives
them exactly what they want at that price point.”
Lemon Tree Hotels follow a very strong
corporate social responsibility policy and
takes pride in sharing it. “Our corporate social
responsibility quotient has been high and we have
undertaken several initiatives since 2006-2007
hiring ‘Employees With Disabilities’ (EWDs) has
been our single most powerful one. Lemon Tree
believes that persons with disabilities must be
provided the same opportunities as others to realise
their full potential. By creating an environment
in the organisation that allows them to deliver
their best, we are able to play a part, however
small, in social inclusiveness and nation
building. Our company philosophy is to make
Lemon Tree Hotels an inclusive workplace and
to build processes with appropriate learning that
will facilitate this objective. We currently have
over 130 EWDs in our team, who are all hearingand-speech impaired. They work across different
areas of our hotels e.g. Housekeeping, Kitchen
Stewarding and Food & Beverage service. This
is currently six per cent of the total staffing
of the 21 hotels we own and operate
across India. Our goal is to take this to
10 per cent of total staffing be 2013-14
or about 250 EWDs,” he shares.
Being a hospitality expert,
Rahul feels that the consumer’s
buying behaviour
i s
fast changing i.e. consolidation by corporates
through RFPs and individual consumers are
moving online – for reviews, price shopping,
buying bundled packages and booking hotels
online. He feels that the brands that cater to this
change in a compelling and competitive manner
are the ones that see greater share-of-wallet.
He further feels that India performed below the
global markets – due to a massive supply injection
and a lackluster CAPEX environment. “This
economic reality was further compounded by our
double digit taxation policy. Our Asian counterparts
with a pragmatic, tourist friendly policy-enabled
environment – Singapore, Hong Kong, Dubai and
Thailand – registered 80 per cent plus occupancies.
It is time for the government to plan structural
support for the industry in India. The right signals
would be including hotels in the infrastructure list
and ensuring single digit taxation on hotel rooms.
These measures will not only maintain investment
momentum in the sector but also arrest flight of
domestic and international demand, currently bypassing India,” avered Rahul. The current climate
can promote consolidation if value expectations are
realistic. Foreign REITs would
watch the governance
scenario and policy
outlook before making
an
investment
decision,”
he
outlines.

A Wine for every occasion
Ten years ago, the idea of drinking Indian wine would draw sniggers and the odd ‘vinegar in a
bottle’ dig. Since then it has won praise from international wine experts and importantly gotten
Indians to drink more of it than they ever have in the history of this spirit-loving nation. Indian
vineyards started their careers by sticking to predominantly four French varieties: Cabernet
Sauvignon, Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc, but other interesting varietals such as
Viognier, Merlot, Chardonnay and Reisling are gaining prominence. The Indian basket is getting
more diverse and better. There’s also plenty of it to confidently recommend. Enlisted below are
some of the finest Red and White Wines of India.

and tannic, similar to the Australia one which is
referred to as Shiraz, though Reveilo insists on
calling their wine Syrah. This is one Indian wine
that can actually get better with some ageing.
So pick it up, store it well and there’s no telling
what other interesting characteristics you might
discover six months to a year on.
Sula Rasa (Shiraz)
Concentration delivers students to distinction.
Concentration does well for the vines too and
Sula scores great points on that account with this
Shiraz. Straight Shiraz hasn’t been popular until
recently, prior to which all of Sula’s Shiraz were
going into blends. This effort though makes that
decision seem ever more curious. This wine has
intense, spicy aromas and the sheer concentration
of fruit comes through on the palate while the
Six of India’s finest Red

Reveilo Reserve Syrah
There was both incredulity and anticipation when
Vintage Wines decided to introduce a premium
wine with half the range priced around `1,000 a
bottle. After a pour, however, both issues were
flushed out. Bottled under the brand Reveilo, this
wine is estate grown - picked from the producer’s
own Nashik vineyards and matured in new
French oak barrels for nine months. This is a big
wine and its elegance makes it a special one. The
wine has a smokey character, it’s peppery with
flavors of dark berries predominating. There’s
more than just a hint of oak which sits well with
this Syrah’s flavour profile and the tannins are
balanced without being too soft. Syrah hails
from the Rhone valley in South East France
where it yields a peppery, medium - bodied red.
Interestingly, the Indian style is more robust

oak element is subtle, at best. The tannins are
however very present which gives the wine good
structure. Sula maintains that it will only bottle
the Rasa during the best of vintages. The first
batch, a 2007 vintage, contained only 600 cases
and they don’t come cheap. This is an occasion
wine and putting it away for a while longer, to
further soften the tannins, will only do it more
good.
Grover’s La Reserve (Cabernet
Shiraz)
It’s long held the mantle as India’s best wine,
becoming an almost household name for the first
generation of wine drinkers in India. The legacy
has filtered through to the current generation to
whom it has endeared, in spite of the variety of
international reds they’ve hed. Ironic then that
this iconic wine was produced in Nandi Hills
in Karnataka, not Nashik, regarded hitherto as
the Indian wine capital. The first adaptation of
the patently Australian style of Cabernet Shiraz
was grown under the uncompromising attention
of revered French wine maker Michel Rolland.
Even today, the grapes are handpicked from the
oldest of the estate’s vines and given six months
in French oak barrels. La Réserve is a rush of ripe
fruit but in a good way. There are also notes of
chocolate and vanilla. The fruit and oak contain
one another and the tannins balance the two. The
wine has a near perfect landing so to speak. Its
astonishing consistency over the years justifies
the grand name.
Indus Cabernet Sauvignon
On the way to Nashik from Mumbai, Igatpuri
is a well-known home to a cult of meditation
and draws trekkers during the monsoons. Last
weekend it drew a certain curious trio of city
professionals, out from their urban lives towards
the valley’s soil and the consequent result was

fruit character and spice as well as a powerful
oak influence. This is probably the one Indian
red that can unquestionably age and the time
to drink it depends on what you prefer - robust
tannins and rich oak flavour (drink now) or ripe
fruit with soft tannin (age it). In any event, the
impressions stays long on the palate, perhaps
long enough to tempt one to stock up. Uncork it
or put it down for some but get it you must.
York Cabernet Sauvignon
Indus, but the discovery of a sub-region and
micro-climate that for long lay under the noses
of wine grape farmers and is only now gaining
recognition. The Indus Cabernet Sauvignon is a
great one not just because it outdoes the standard
but that it bares another all together interesting
style with hints of mint and eucalyptus, not a hint
of sweetness and a full body that fills the mouth
and the senses. The dry finish is the proverbial
icing on the cake. This wine goes down very well
indeed and the bottle looks beautiful too.
Chateau D’Ori Cabernet Shiraz
When you describe a wine as rich, there’s the
invariable association with expensive. For
the quality, this wine isn’t and has emerged
as by far the most worthy challenge to the La
Reserve (ditto red blend). The laterite soils of
Dindori and the keen stewardship of Monsieur
Athanese Fakorellis, flying French wine maker,
has yielded a fine result. It’s got expressive red
If the consistent mention of Cabernet Sauvignon
in this piece is a dead giveaway so be it. This
grape has thrived in Indian conditions and York
upholds this modern tradition with a luscious red
and its expression gets better the longer it stays
on the palate. The wine has good body, hints
of dark cherries, pepper and pencil shavings
even. This is a pleasantly complex wine and the
oak on the finish is a nice touch. Not bad at all
considering that it’s the producer’s first vintage.
India’s finest White Wines
Indus Sauvignon Blanc
In India good white wine is harder to find than
red. Much, much harder. So when an Indian
white fits that description of bouquet and palate,
you want to hold onto it and enjoy it the way you
would a rare flower. The Indus Sauvignon Blanc
has found a good home in Igatpuri Maharashtra.
This white wine exemplifies balance - the aromas
of citrus fruit and cut grass, citrus and passion
fruit on the palate - and with pleasing dry finish,
defines India’s posit in the universe of the new
world Sauvignon Blanc styles.
Reveilo Chardonnay Reserve
It works in Burgundy, has been received with
Spotlight
mixed reception in America and never succeeded in
India until recently. More specifically, Chardonnay
fermented and matured in oak. Without getting to
technical, Chardonnay is the one white that gets
the oak treatment while more white wine is held in
metal tanks. Reveilo is the only one to attempt it
here and has created a peach of a wine. In fact, it’s
got flavors of peach and passion fruit, an almost
flinty character and a sweep of oak towards the
end. It’s a touch creamy as well. The wine maker
has improved this wine with every vintage and
with the current one; he’s hit the sweet spot.
Mercury Chenin Blanc
This wine has earned accolades and won awards
and the fact that it’s only been bottled for three
years does it no harm whatsoever. It stands apart
from the typical Indian style of Chenin Blanc
which experts have come to define as modestly
acidic with a discernibly sweet finish. Not so with
Mercury’s star white - all floral nose and honeydew
and melon on the palate, crisp acidity and a dry,
contrasting finish - which lends the wine a distinct
character and makes it the pick of the bunch.
Grover’s Viognier
Grover’s was the first to grow this Rhone Valley
grape in India and still retains the edge even
though there’s now competition. The Viognier
traditionally turns out a perfumed and floral wine
which is the delight of those who prefer the lighter
style. Grover’s Viognier retains those attributes
but also boasts visible acidity which only makes it
more fresh and appealing. Look out for the apricots
and tropical fruit flavors. This wine is highly
underrated and can only get more popular.
Unfortunately there isn’t much around so it’s one
to look out for and stock before it runs out.
Chateau D’Ori Sauvignon Blanc
The producer surprised everyone by using oak
chips to mature its Sauvignon Blanc - a French
style rarely tried elsewhere - but while this is no
longer the case the wine still attains a fine balance
between alcohol and acidity. It’s crisp and floral.
Grapefruit and citric aromas come through on
the nose while on the palate the wine has mineral
characteristics that complement the fruit. An
obvious Indian summer afternoon choice.
Sula Riesling
It finds mention on our list not just because it’s the
only Riesling ever made in India but because the
style is more Germanic than New World. There’s
a whiff of petrol on the nose and honeyed notes.
The Sula Riesling is an elegant wine with low
acidity and a tinge of sweetness on the finish. It’s a
darling for those who like lighter white wine styles.

Foreign tourists in groups
to India to get collective landing permits
In a bid to attract more foreign
tourists to the country and do away
with the tedious visa procedures,
the Indian government has
allowed Visa-on-Arrival facility
for foreign tourists coming to
our country in groups of four or

C
lose on the heels of liberalising the tourist
visa on arrival (T-VoA) for people from 11
countries, foreign tourists arriving in groups
will be provided collective landing permits as part of
a plan to boost their arrivals. The collective landing
permit will benefit the State as the Foreigner’s
Registration offices in Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi,
and Kozhikode figure on the list where the tourists
or travel agencies can submit the details 72 hours in
advance.
The tourism industry will also benefit from group
tours as the state is promoting MICE (meetings,
incentives, conferences, and exhibitions) tourism
in a big way as Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and
Kumarakom are favoured destinations for meetings
and conventions.
Already, the Thiruvananthapuram international
airport and the Cochin international airport have
been designated as gateways to the country by the
Union Government to grant the T-VoA to increase
tourist arrivals. The decision to grant the collective
landing permit taken by the Union government
had been conveyed to the States, as the Foreigners
Registration Office is involved, and stakeholders of
tourism industry.
Foreign tourists in groups of four or more
sponsored by the travel agencies approved by the
Union Ministry of Tourism and with a pre-drawn
itinerary will be provided a collective landing permit
for a maximum of 60 days. Multiple entry facilities
will also enable them to visit neighbouring countries.

For availing themselves of this facility, the
tourists or travel agencies can fill in an application
online. The list of members along with the printed
visa application and their itinerary should have to
be submitted to the Foreigner’s Registration Office
concerned.
Along with the three major cities in the State,
Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Amritsar,
Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Goa and Lucknow figure on
the list from where the facility will be available.
An undertaking will also have to be given to
conduct the tour as per the itinerary and that no
individual will be allowed to drop out from the
group. Compared to the collective landing permit,
the T-VoA is valid for 30 days. Those applying for
the visa should not have a residence or occupation
in India and hold a passport with minimum sixmonth validity.
Union Tourism Minister Shri K Chiranjeevi
has welcomed the new initiative. In a statement he
said, “This was a move forward and would go a
long way towards boosting group travel to India,
and would also give a boost to the tourism industry
in the country.”
Website gets a new look, more hits
The revamped Incredible India website www.incredibleindia.org recently crossed the two million hits mark recently. A
spokesperson for the Tourism Ministry said the website has started receiving almost 6,000 hits every day. This major
increase is the result of the Tourism Ministry’s new policy to place a large number of services on the website in pursuit
of the directions of Union Tourism Minister K Chiranjeevi to concentrate marketing efforts through the internet in
proportion to the number of potential tourists using the internet vis-a-vis other traditional media.
A study commissioned by the Tourism Ministry two months ago, revealed that in the US 15 per cent of those
polled received the Incredible India message through the internet, 15 per cent through television, 26 per cent through the
print media and the remaining through at least two of the three media. In Australia, the figures were 14 per cent for the
internet, 19 per cent for television and 22 per cent for the print media and the remaining through two or more media.
Through the Incredible India website, it is now possible for an internet user sitting in any part of the world to book
a domestic airline ticket in India on the five main domestic airlines and also to book a hotel room at any hotel in India
that is a member of one of the three major hotel associations. Officials at the Ministry say the spurt in the popularity of
incredibledindia.org is also due to a number of other services that have been put on the website, in collaboration with
Google and its affiliate YouTube.
Now anyone can watch complete recordings of 14 sound and light shows at different locations in India through
collaboration between the Ministry and YouTube. Anyone wishing to get a glimpse of the luxurious hospitality given
to delegates of the recently concluded United Nations World Tourism Organisation conference held in Hyderabad can
go through a video of the hospitality and entertainment provided at the various palaces of Hyderabad through a button
on the home page of the Incredible India website. This film was produced free of charge by Shri Chiranjeevi’s own
production company.

Manali buckles under

MP Tourism’s new TVC is out
I
ncrease in tourist arrival from 13 lakh people to 32 lakh people in a
decade is a good sign for growing tourism industry of Kullu valley,
but on the other hand infrastructure development has failed to match
rise in tourist footfalls. The total traffic burden on Manali is many times
more than the capacity of all parking spaces. All streets in Manali have
turned into parking lots. Residents have been parking their cars on the
national highway, which is again leading to traffic jams. Similar is the
condition on Manali-Rohtang highway, Vashisht, Hadimba Temple and
other tourist spots around Manali. An official reveals that currently they
have a plan to spend `5 crore for new parking spaces. As there is no
scope for widening the existing roads and streets, they are looking at the
possibility of building skyways.

pilgrims walking the 13km stretch, but other ancient Buddhist
sites such as Telhara, GhoraKatora (both in Nalanda) and Antichak
in Bhagalpur district are also fast catching the attention. Bihar
is known across the globe as home to the ancient Nalanda and
Vikramshila universities. But archaeologists have stumbled on
traces of another ancient university in Bihar - at Telhara, a small
village 30km from Biharsharif.
In view of the importance of Vikramshila University at Antichak
in Bhagalpur district, Bihar government has sanctioned `100

areas are another unexplored Buddhist sites which have recently

Confederation of Indian Industry (CII)
has planned to organise a three-day
tourism fest from December 5 with
several states expected to participate.
“The first ever tourism fest will be
organised with the partnership of
all northern state governments to
boost tourism,” said Arjun Sharma,
Chairman, CII Tourism Fest 2013
and Managing Director, Le Passage
to India.
The Punjab Government has
Arjun Sharma
agreed to be the principal partner
state while Gujarat will be the ‘partner state’ in this initiative, he said.
Jharkhand, West Bengal, Jammu and Kashmir, Chhattisgarh and Madhya
Pradesh have confirmed their participation while discussions are on with
Uttarakhand, Goa, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Odisha, he said. Besides
the Indian states, Sharma said, “Thailand has already confirmed its
participation and we are expecting participation from Germany, Malaysia,
China, Russia, Australia, USA, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Macau, Britain.
Aurangabad receives `8
crore for tourism
development
T
alking to IANS, Shri Zuher Bin Sagir, District Magistrate Agra
revealed, “I have been assured by top officials that the Airport
Authority of India officials would soon visit Agra and give their
survey report after a visit to Dhanuali, where we want to have the airport
terminal adjacent to the existing airport at Kheria.” The Kheria Airport
belongs to the Indian Air Force.
Sagir said farmers would be adequately compensated for the
additional 57-acre land that needs to be acquired. Sagir said an airport
that serves civilian traffic would prove a boon to the tourism industry.
Senior tourism industry leader Rajiv Tiwari said: “Shri Ajit Singh,
Honourable Minister for Civil Aviation, is very positive about the Agra
airport project. The Airport Authority of India has already surveyed the
Dhanuali area and is keen that the work on the project starts soon.” The
Taj Mahal is less than 10km from the Kheria airport.
Kerala launches country’s
first tourist seaplane service
K
erala Tourism recently launched the country’s first tourist
seaplane service that would enable holidayers enjoy the
panoramic beauty of the ‘God’s Own Country’ through easy
connectivity to distant backwater destinations. The amphibian service
was flagged off by Shri Oommen Chandy, Hon’ble Chief Minister.
The maiden service between Ashtamudi Lake here and Punnamada in
Alappuzha, however, was called off due to bad weather. Marking its
inauguration, the plane took off from the waterdrome and landed back.
The six-seater Cessna 206 floatplane was operated by Belgian captain
Michael Fabry, watched by hundreds of onlookers who gathered for
the inaugural despite the hostile weather. The service in due course
envisages connecting the entire stretch of Kerala with Trivandrum,
Kochi and Kozhikode airports, being base stations.

M
r Parminder Singh Sodhi, Commissioner,
Central
Excise
Commissionerate,
Chandigarh stressed that the VCES is
a liberal and trade-friendly measure. He also urged
businesses to take advantage of its benefits, and avoid
the potential payment of interest and penalties. He
asked the representatives of the industry to ask their
members to avail the benefits under VCES 2013 and
pay their due taxes and avoid interest, penalty and
prosecution under Service Tax laws.
Mrs Rachna Singh, Assistant Commissioner of
Service Tax Division, Chandigarh also addressed
the major concerns of the hoteliers in the region.
Giving detailed information about the Voluntary
Compliance Encouragement Scheme (VCES), she
said. “The voluntary compliance encouragement
scheme (VCES) will make the defaulters fall in
line. The central government has introduced the
scheme to encourage defaulters to pay service tax
dues voluntarily without any penalty, interest and
prosecution. To encourage voluntary compliance by
service providers, no inquiry or investigation will
be conducted against a declarant, if any individual
comes forward to make truthful declaration and also
gets immunity from interest and penalty.”
Mr Manmohan Singh, Chairman, CII,
Chandigarh, said, “Service sector contributes about
65 per cent of the GDP but the number of service
tax payers is quite less. Therefore, this scheme was
launched to bridge this gap and allow defaulting
persons and companies to disclose their tax liabilities
and file their service tax returns.”
The representatives of the trade industry
explained their concerns which mainly included
clarity regarding initiation of audit, the eligibility
criteria under the scheme and other clarifications.
Some of the representatives suggested that a negative
list of all those categories who are not eligible under
this scheme may be prepared and circulated by
the department so that all concerned may know in
advance whether they can avail the benefit under
VCES 2013 or not. Other issues of the service sector
like double taxation, creditbilling, risk management
were also deliberated upon.

Five magnificent Forts of India
I
ndia’s cultural history unveils some fascinating
facts about forts, their architecture, heritage and
importance. Built for the primary purpose of
defence, forts were also a sign of a kingdom’s authority
and the strength of its King. Much planning went
into their complex design and location to provide the
maximum in protection from invading forces. Traps
and deceptions were incorporated to capture prisoners
and foil attacks. Another extremely important feature,
a self-sustaining water source was crucial to survival
for long sieges.
Soldiers and prisoners lived for months on end in
the forts, and carefully planned storage and reservoir
systems were paramount as a lifeline; their actual
location within the complex remained a closely
guarded secret to prevent nearby lurking enemies from
poisoning supply.
India has several long-standing forts that lend a
rich historical and cultural dimension to the country’s
tourism. We have selected the top five which hold
particularly fascinating interest, to help you plan your
journey, experiencing much of India at the same time.
Travel light, don’t forget your camera and bring a
bottle of water to keep you hydrated and prepare for
some fantastic walks.
Amber Fort,
Rajasthan
A
s a perfect blend of Hindu-Muslim
architecture, the Amber Fort is located in
the small town of Amer in Rajasthan. Built
in the 16th century it is known for its artistic styling
with large ramparts, series of gates and cobbled
paths. Inside the Sheesh Mahal (mirror palace)
is well worth the trip, as well as the Sukh Niwas
where a cool climate is artificially created by winds
that blow over the water cascade within the palace.
The fort is connected by a subterranean passage in
the north to the Jaigarh Fort, which was used as an
escape route in times of war.
Travel tip: Fly to Delhi International Airport to
reach the Amber Fort.
Jaisalmer Fort,
Rajasthan
A
lso known as the Golden Fort and one of
the largest in the world, Jaisalmer’s yellow
sandstone provided camouflage in the vast
surrounds of Thar desert. Built in 1156 by the Rajputs,
the fort has three interior walls to secure enemies
Agra Fort, Agra
B
uilt by the great Mughal emperor Akbar in
1565, the Agra Fort is known as the ‘walled
city’. History tells us that the precious
Kohinoor Diamond (105.6 metric carats) was
discovered here. Robustly built, it was the stronghold
of the Mughals, embellished with a number of
richly decorated buildings in Mughal style art and
architecture. Within the fort you’ll find Jahangiri
Mahal (built by Akbar for his son Jehangir), Khas
Mahal (white marble palace) and the Musamman
Burj which is a tower with a balcony facing the Taj
Mahal, where Shah Jahan spent the last seven years
of his life under house arrest by his son Aurangzeb.

palaces, including Rana Kumbha Palace (Indian ruler
belonging to the Sisodia clan), and Padmini’s Palace
(Padmini was the queen of Chittor), 19 temples with
intricate carvings, and 20 bodies of water. It was said
that Sultan Alauddin fell in love with Rani Padmini
upon seeing her reflection in one of the reservoirs
which led to the battle of Mewar, and her death.

ARIES (March 21 to April 20)
You will be obsessed with learning new skills
and gathering information during the next
few weeks. You could spend a lot of time
online, at the library, or talking to people in
your community. You’ll be busy taking classes
or attending seminars and be energized by
interesting conversations. You will make new
contacts that enrich your life in some way
during the current transits in Gemini. Uranus
in your sign will ensure that nothing you do
will be predictable or boring. Others may
perceive your behavior and demeanor as odd
or eccentric. Change your routine frequently
and be open to new experiences.
TAURUS (April 21 to May 20)
Several planets in Gemini will help to spotlight
the need for more information on financial
planning and money management this month.
This would be a good time to talk to someone
knowledgeable and helpful. You might have
to do some homework to find the right person
to explain things in layman’s terms and work
with you to create a practical plan. Gemini
isn’t in a comfortable relationship with your
sign, and this will mean that you’ll have to
make adjustments to embrace a new attitude
about money and material things. You will
socialize with your extended family later
in the month.
GEMINI (May 21 to June 20)
There will be plenty of activity in your sign,
bringing out your curiosity and love of social

open mind and focus on new objectives. You will
be motivated to make changes and have faith in
the future. With Neptune in Pisces, be careful of
so-called friends who may not be trustworthy.
CANCER (June 21 to July 22)

emotions and motivations. If you have any
troubling issues, this would be a good time talk
to a therapist and explore your psyche. If that
isn’t your thing, try to write down your thoughts
in a journal and analyze what’s at the root of
your fears and insecurities. This may not be a
comfortable process, but you will benefit from
some soul searching or talking it out. Pluto
opposite your sign will continue to bring chaos
and transformation regarding your relationships.
LEO (July 23 to August 22)
Avoid controversial subjects and painful topics.
Your wit and charm will entertain and engage
