A&P Association president Duncan McKenzie said that the gate takings were right up with previous shows, the overcast weather encouraged people to stay and he had heard only positive comments. The construction of the new shared recreational facility at the Takaka’s Rec Park requires the demolition of the old grandstand and the booth. This means that future A&P Shows will change. To celebrate the extent to which the annual show is woven into the community’s heritage, the 119th show had a heritage theme. There was period costume and some older classes of competition were given the special tag “end of an era”. One example was in the Home Cooking section where class 32, entitled “Lady’s Afternoon Tea”, required a tray with a teapot and cosy, a teacup, three food items and a flower arrangement. The food items had to be one spreadable, one sweet and one savoury. The GB Weekly’s own Nicola Wells won first and second prize in this class. Elsewhere there was a distinct tinge of heritage – from the collectible cars to restored tractors and farm machinery, to the Omotomotomotoco’s display of restored machinery and the bonnets of some of the stall-holders. In the booth and in the specially-erected heritage tent, the A&P Show committee had on display blown-up quotes from participants in the A&P Show from earlier days. This was an initiative of Noel and Carolyn Baigent and attracted a lot of positive comment. One, from show stalwart Keith Page said in 1973: “These old fellows at that first meeting in 1893 to try and form a dairy company could not visualise then that they would end up forming an A&P Association, and that it would still be going 80 years later. And we can’t visualise what it will be in another 80 years. Will the young ones let it all go bung?” These forward-looking thoughts were recorded in Christine Hunt’s book 1893 Onwards: Reminiscences of Golden Bay A&P Shows (1980). On the evidence of last Saturday there seems little chance that the latest group of guardians of the A&P’s heritage will “let it all go bung”. PUMPS Sales and Service Reg Turner is wrong, I believe, to encourage the idea of delegating freedom camping enforcement to local residents (GBW 15/1). Far from discouraging vigilantes, I would expect the ignorant, prejudiced and psychotic to be at the front of the queue seeking policing powers which they could then abuse. Policing is best left to the professionals, the best of whom know how to uphold the spirit rather than the letter of the law and let fairness and common sense prevail. Their wages are money well spent for ratepayers. Considerate freedom campers should not be persecuted; it is largely they who bring much-needed tourist dollars into our local economy. Bush poopers, litter bugs, fire bugs and noise polluters are the real enemies; many of these are not freedom campers at all. Laws and penalties should be accurately targetted; the scatter-gun approach will not do. Positive preventative measures such as installation of toilet, fire and refuse facilities (like the portaloos recently donated by our enlightened philanthropists at the Wholemeal Café and Schnapp Dragon Distillery) are better still. They have unintentionally put TDC to shame. Reg would do better to join their ranks. Steve Penny Milnthorpe appreciation To Tim, Jane and the volunteers: Thank you for the wonderful work maintaining and upgrading the Milnthorpe tracks. It’s great that you are continuing the amazing legacy started by Dick. We are so lucky to have this beautiful park. Linda Wallace Summer Arts Workshop program The GB Community Organic Gardens is offering an Arts Workshop Program, 24 January to 19 March. TDC Creative Communities is sponsoring this educational program that offers a range of different arts facilitated by skilled tutors from Golden Bay. The program will start this Sunday with “Wearable Art: Off the wall and onto the body” with Dominique de Borrekens. Other workshops are “Explore creativity through mixed media” with Jo Campbell, “The Clown and the Fool” with Colin Minney, “Mosaic: outdoor plant pots” with Elvira van der Waay, “Location Theatre” with Martine Baanvinger and “Creative Flax Weaving” with Maureen Harte. There is still time to voice your opposition to the TPPA by signing the petition at http://www. actionstation.org.nz/dontsign. Unlike New Zealand, some countries have requested exemptions from certain parts of this dangerous agreement, Ph 525 9482 (Corner of Motupipi St & Buxton Lane) 4 Baron Hasselhoff’s is leaving town I want to let our fantastic customers and the wider community know that, with a heavy heart, we are relocating to Wellington at the beginning of February. Our last day of trading in our shop will be Saturday 30 January. Baron’s was born in Takaka and over the last five years I have been so lucky to have enormous, generous support from the community; this is something I most definitely don’t take for granted. It’s been a pleasure for me to realise my dream and create a business where I can express my love for food; hopefully you’ve enjoyed watching and tasting the progress. Wellington is going to offer us new challenges, a wider market and opportunities I can’t even imagine. We will always be a Golden Bay business at heart and will continue to supply the local outlets here. Come on down to the shop on our last day and have a glass of bubbles with us. Clayton McErlane Demolition at Rec Park I enjoyed helping at the Golden Bay Pony Club’s eventing day Sunday 17 January (the day after the A&P Show). The Show committee always very kindly leave their jumps up for the younger group to use on their day, and also assist with the running of the annual event. I couldn’t help but think how insensitive it was that from early in the morning the produce booth and SeniorNet rooms were under attack, being demolished with a lot of accompanying noise. Not good for the young riders and their horses I would have thought. I realise the rooms and the grandstand have to be down by a certain date, but did it all have to start with such indecent haste? I know that we have to be prepared for change, even if we aren’t keen on it, but It was certainly upsetting to some of the people at the event – many of whom have grown up with those buildings and the grandstand as part of their lives. Jill Pomeroy golden bay’s news in brief The River Jesters The River Jesters is a rock n roll quartet and will showcase a broad range of new original songs at the Roots Bar on Friday 22 January, 9.30pm, $5 door. The River Jesters formed in late 2012 when Tom Batchelor (vocals) met Michael Morris (guitar) busking in Dunedin. The duo recruited Sam McKean (bass) and Antonio Mercuri (drums). With a headlining slot at WaikeriFest under the ir belt, an appearance at AMI Stadium (CHCH) before a crowd of 18,000 and countless other memorable live shows across NZ, The River Jesters are fast on the rise. Submitted Invitation to Rec Centre mauri stone ceremony 13 Buxton Lane, Takaka knowing the detrimental effect it will generate for their people. One example is the protection of land ownership from foreign investors. This should be a great concern here in New Zealand where we have watched home ownership decline radically over the last decade as the National-led government has perpetuated the investor advantages forcing huge numbers into renting. I would guess that most renters would rather be investing that weekly payment into their own home, instead of padding out their landlords’ profit portfolio. I believe we would have a happier population if the growing disparity between the rich and poor was reversed. If we sign The TPPA we will watch this sad situation worsen. The TPPA is a corporate-driven and corporate-favoured binding document that will have harmful effects on the workforce and our environment. Caring New Zealanders have stood up before when global pressures have attempted to bully us; we can do it again. Please sign the petition and share it with your friends who are too busy in the rat race to have time to keep up with the latest misguided government action. John Key would rather you talk about a flag. Victoria Davis Everyone is invited to a dawn ceremony to bless and mark the beginning of construction of the Golden Bay Community Recreation Facility. The project will begin with a 4.30am ceremony on Tuesday 2 February to lay mauri stones on the site. The stones represent the life blood of the facility and will act as kaitiaki (guardians) of the facility, offering protection and carrying the spirit of the community. Mauri stones will be offered by the Council, Shared Recreation Facility Committee, Manawhenua ki Mohua, A&P Association and others. The new building in Takaka’s Recreation Park will house a gymnasium with indoor netball court, two squash courts, toilets and changing rooms, and community and function rooms. Anyone wishing to attend the ceremony can RSVP to Brian Harris ph 525 8599 or brian.rosemarie@xtra.co.nz Submitted by Tasman District Council JB3 to perform at Roots Bar On Sunday 24 January Wellington trio JB3 will perform at Zatori, followed by a show at Roots Bar on Tuesday 26 January. Led by locally-raised saxophonist Jake Baxendale, the trio is performing in Golden Bay as part of a South Island tour - a first for the band. The trio has been performing in Wellington for the last two years, playing a mix of classic 60s-70s soul jazz and more contemporary jazz-funk fusion. After Jake’s recent trip to Sydney, the band is focusing more on original music. “I saw a lot of original jazz while I was in Sydney, in all sorts of styles,” says Jake. “It really inspired me to take a closer look at this era of jazz and try to write for it myself. I think I’ve come to understand the music a lot better.” JB3 features two of Baxendale’s most frequent collaborators; Daniel Hayles, who recently came through the Bay performing with Holly Smith; and Shaun Anderson, who performs in Jake’s eight-piece modern jazz group The Jac. All three are members of brass band The Richter City Rebels, which is playing at the Mussel Inn the same week, on Friday 29 January. JB3 are performing at Zatori, 2321 Takaka-Collingwood Hwy at 7pm, $10 on the door, and at Roots Bar at 9pm, no charge. Submitted The GB Weekly, Friday 22 january 2016 Plans for freedom camping working group to improve compliance Having parked up at Taupata Point - just a few kilometres short of Puponga - B e n j a mi n L e g a r e and Mathilde Sourgnes are standing under the raised tailgate of their old Toyota Estima while they cook up a batch of two-minute noodles. As they wait for the lunch pot to boil, the young French couple take in panoramic views of the Bay and watch shorebirds roosting on the intertidal flats. It’s a picture of peace, freedom and natural beauty – the sort of iconic image that that sells New Zealand to young travellers the world over. But local Taupata resident Zara Lavanchy sees something rather less appealing on her daily stroll past the creek and onto the beach: sheets of used toilet paper scrunched up and left lying on the ground. “I have a plastic bag and French tourists Benjamin Legare and Mathilde Sourgnes say it’s important to stick to the rules. pick it up every day.” Asked Photo: Jo Richards. why she goes to the trouble, Zara says she can’t help herself. “It’s my instinct to clear up – imagine what this place would look like if I didn’t.” The beauty spot has become so routinely soiled that it’s now a no-go area for her young family. “My kids won’t play here any more – they don’t like it.” Zara says she tries to educate campers and encourage them to take all their waste away when they leave. “Most respond well, but some are angry – especially some of the young ones. They have a real attitude.” The “antisocial” behaviour of some freedom campers has caused some locals to become increasingly angry. Campsite managers are also frustrated by travellers who park outside the campground then try to sneak in to use facilities. In Takaka, library users are often dismayed to see long queues outside the toilet as well as the travellers connecting their Mac Books and iPads to the free Wi-Fi. It’s leaving the reputation of freedom campers somewhat tarnished. Benjamin and Mathilde have much in common with the stereotypical freedom camper. They are long-term visitors: “We arrived on the 4th of December and we’re staying one year.” They have bought their campervan for the duration of their stay and hope to travel around the whole of New Zealand while sticking to a tight budget. All that’s needed is a final $20,000 to make it happen. Museum Board chairperson Penny Griffith is confident the project will be able go ahead over winter. “We were absolutely thrilled to learn just before Christmas that our Lottery Grants application for $40,000 was successful - it’s been a huge boost.” The museum has now raised $97,000 from a variety of grants and other sources towards the whalery and preparation of the whale skeleton that will be the focal point of the displays. Penny adds, “It’s such an exciting addition to our ability to tell the Golden Bay/ Mohua story, and I’m sure it will become a regional draw-card for visitors. Let’s get the Whale into the Whalery.” Donations over $5 are eligible for tax credits and all donations of $1,000 or more will be recorded on a permanent donors’ board inside the whalery. Details of how to donate (including on Give-a-Little) are on the museum website: www.goldenbaymuseum. org.nz To kick off the race for the finishing line, Jenny Cooper and Penny are organising a fundraising screening of two Golden Bay whale stranding documentaries: Stranded! (1997) and Once Upon a Pod of Whales (2012). This will be at the Village Theatre on Sunday 7 February at 2pm, and will include refreshments. Tickets, $20, are available from Paradise Video (next to the museum in Takaka) and Collingwood Post and Gifts. More info: Ph Penny 524 8112 or 021 0233 3770. Graphic: Jo Richards. Earlier this month, Rolf and Ute Kleine discovered that in January 2015, while they were out, Auckland-based Police had conducted a covert search of their Pohara home. Photo: Jo Richards. The owners of the Takaka Infusion vegetarian tea rooms are reeling from the latest revelations to trickle out of Operation Concord – the national Police investigation into the 1080in-infant-formula blackmail threat. Earlier this month, Rolf and Ute Kleine discovered that in January 2015, while they were out, Auckland-based police conducted a covert search of their Pohara home. “It came as a complete shock,” says Rolf. The hitherto secret search took place two months before a squad of eight police officers from Operation Concord interrupted Rolf and Ute while they were having breakfast. The officers searched the Kleine’s home and business premises and obtained DNA swabs and fingerprints from the owners, who were then taken to separate police stations for lengthy questioning. The incident, which took place on 25 March and was widely reported at the time, left the couple feeling violated and not a little angry. It is thought that police suspicion was initially aroused by a series of letters that Rolf sent to Fonterra in 2012, expressing his concern that 1080 pellets from aerial application could contaminate local milk supplies. This correspondence was apparently sufficient for police to classify its author, along with his wife, as “significant persons of interest”. It was clear from the hyperbole used by the Ministry for Primary Industries, when they went public about the blackmail threat in early March, that Fonterra and the Government were distinctly rattled. The so-called “eco-terrorism” case came hot on the heels of Fonterra’s 2013 botulism scare and had the potential to severely damage NZ’s biggest export industry. It explains why NZ Police employed a team of 35 full-time staff and spent an estimated $3 million on the investigation. After devoting around 30,000 staff hours to the case, it was eventually solved in October last year following the arrest of a suspect who has since pleaded guilty. Although this outcome completely exonerates the Kleines, their lingering concern over police tactics means the couple has not yet achieved a sense of closure. Rolf and Ute had started to put their police visit and interrogation behind them. But their recovery was knocked for six when they received a 6 January email from investigating officer Detective Senior Sergeant Aaron Pascoe that provided details of the earlier search: “...Police executed an additional search warrant at your address on 28 January 2015 when you were not present.” “We had to read it three times,” says Ute. “We felt sick – we couldn’t believe it…It’s all come up again – even worse than it was.” winter eScAPe Czech Romance 21 Day Tour 10 August 2016 Vienna, Budapest, Prague and beyond Stunning National Parks, quaint medieval villages, Goulash and dumplings and the best beer in the world! Guided by Karen and Russell Pringle. email: eurolink@xtra.co.nz check our website www.eurolinktours.com The GB Weekly, Friday 22 january 2016 Such clandestine searches are entirely legal under the Search and Surveillance Act 2012, as the officer in charge of Operation Concord, Detective Superintendent Andy Lovelock, explained in a written response to the The GB Weekly’s enquiry. “In some circumstances, such as where an overt search would prejudice an ongoing investigation or endanger the safety of any person, search warrants are executed covertly.” The granting of a warrant relies on the police convincing a judge that there are reasonable grounds for the request, but Rolf is not convinced that the procedure was robust. “What are reasonable grounds? If we knew, then it would make it easier for us.” His scepticism is shared by others: An internet search brings up a raft of material that questions NZ Police conduct in other high-profile investigations, and alleges frequent provision of false or misleading information in order to obtain warrants – most notably in the case of the infamous 2007 Uruwera “terror” raids. On studying the warrant documents attached to DSS Pascoe’s email message, the Kleines discovered that the police had also removed samples for DNA analysis from hairbrushes and dental floss as well as lifting fingerprints and cloning computer equipment during the search. “This is really scary, very intimidating,” says Rolf. Ute says that the sense of security they treasured in their Pohara home has been shattered. “Our home used to be a safe environment – it’s really important to us. “Last weekend I woke up in the middle of the night and was scared again – and when I go into the bathroom I wonder who’s been in there.” The couple has now put a revised interpretation on a series of seemingly insignificant and unconnected past incidents –a mysterious malfunctioning phone line and an unexpected immigration check at Auckland airport. “We were on our way to Australia and we got called back at passport control for no reason. I think they were monitoring our movements,” says Rolf. Towards the end of his email message, DSS Pascoe thanks the couple for their “assistance and co-operation” and offers something of an apology for the invasion of their privacy: “Police acknowledge that there is an implicit interference with privacy associated with searches of this type and we apologise for any stress this may have caused.” Rolf remains unimpressed by this approach and believes the second, overt raid and subsequent interrogation was designed to inflict maximum stress. “It was to intimidate us and all the anti-1080 people in the Bay.” DSS Pascoe has offered the Kleines a face-to-face meeting, albeit at the local police station, and with a police lawyer in attendance. However, Ute is reluctant to enter the premises. “I’m really angry – I don’t want to meet with them.” Any future dealings with officers from Operation Concord will be conducted on a more arms-length basis, says Rolf. “We’ve handed it over to our lawyer. We don’t trust them anymore. We want to take it to court now.” He explains that their lawyer will seek two main forms of redress. “The most important thing is for the police to make a public apology, but we will also be looking for some financial compensation.” Ute is clear about her reasons for bringing DSS Pascoe and his colleagues to account. “They shouldn’t get away with it and it shouldn’t happen to other people.
