Ian Spooner
Head Coach
Western Michigan University (2005)
Overall Record: 41-17-1 (three seasons)
Conference Record: 21-9 (three seasons)
Ian Spooner, now in his eighth season overall with the San Jacinto College soccer team, is beginning his fourth as head coach of the Coyote soccer program.
Spooner served four years as an assistant coach, was the interim head coach in 2012, and earned the top spot as head coach in the summer of 2013. Through
all the transitions, the former collegiate goalkeeper has upheld the tradition of excellence that is the San Jacinto College men’s soccer program.
The 2014 season was full of ups and downs, but as a whole the team played hard and with a purpose. Three student-athletes earned postseason honors,
led by Ian Barbosa and Prince Ihenacho, who were all-region selections. Roberto Diaz Fernandez was the team’s newcomer of the year. Two players signed
National Letters of Intent to continue their education and soccer careers at four-year colleges or universities. Overall, San Jac posted a 9-11 record.
The 2013 season was one for the record books for San Jac men’s soccer. Spooner guided his team to a third place national finish at the National Junior
College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I men’s soccer championship, setting a new school record with 20 wins. The 2013 squad finished 20-2-0 overall,
with just one regular season loss, en route to the national semifinal appearance. Six student-athletes earned NJCAA or National Soccer Coaches Association
(NSCAA) All-American honors, and 11 went on to sign National Letters of Intent at four-year colleges or universities.
In 2012, Spooner’s first as the leader of the program, San Jacinto College went 12-4-1 overall, and 6-2 in conference play. San Jacinto College didn’t make
it past the regional tournament that season, but all was not lost. Three players earned NJCAA or NSCAA recognition, led by Jose Seoane, who was named
a NJCAA second-team All-American, NSCAA first-team All-region, and the team’s newcomer of the year. Pablo Vasquez and Daniel Porlán, now an assistant
coach with San Jacinto College, also earned national recognition.
From 2008 to 2011, Spooner was an assistant coach under then Head Coach
David Santesteban. He helped San Jac to the national runner-up in 2008,
the most successful season in San Jacinto College men’s soccer history.
Three players were named NJCAA and NSCAA All-Americans, and five others
earned national recognition. Kieron Bernard, the team’s defensive MVP,
signed a professional contract with the Austin Aztex FC. From 2009 to 2011,
Spooner helped the Coyotes return to the regional championship.
Spooner spent the 2005-06 season as the assistant coach at Cumberland
University of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). He
holds a United States Soccer Federation National “C” Coaching License. He
spent two and a half years working for the Challenge Soccer Club, and four
years as a professional staff coach for Space City Soccer Club.
Spooner hails from Houston, but played collegiately at Western Michigan
University from 2001-2005. As a keeper for the Broncos, he was named
the Mid-American Conference player of the week in September of 2003.
Spooner was the 2004 Western Michigan University Most Valuable Player
and the 2001 newcomer of the year. He helped the Broncos to the 2003
MAC championship and the 2004 MAC runner-up.
Spooner holds a bachelor’s degree in communications from Western
Michigan University.

Daniel Porlan
Assistant Coach
Belhaven College (2014)
Second Season
Daniel Porlán is in his second year as assistant coach with the San Jacinto College men’s soccer
program. However, the Madrid, Spain native is no stranger to San Jac men’s soccer. Porlán played
at San Jacinto College during the 2011 and 2012 seasons, serving as team captain in his second
year. As a sophomore he was a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (ASCAA) All-Region
second-team selection, and the team’s MVP. As a freshman, Porlán helped San Jac advance to the
Region XIV conference tournament final.
After San Jac, Porlán played a season at Belhaven College. He currently coaches for Texas United FC.
Shane Lyons
Volunteer Assistant Coach
Western Michigan University (2013)
First Season
Shane Lyons is in his first season with the San Jacinto College men’s soccer program. Prior to coming
to San Jac, Lyons was head coach at Kalamazoo Central high school, a Division A school in Michigan.
Lyons has also coached for Kingdom Soccer Club and TKO Soccer Club in Michigan. He is currently
coaching at Houston Express Soccer Club.
As a player, Lyons played collegiately at Oakland University before transferring to Western Michigan
University. As a freshman at Oakland, he earned Summit League All-Newcomer honors. He led the team
in points, and was tied for the most goals for the season. Lyons transferred to Western Michigan as a
sophomore, where he made the All-Mid-American Conference first-team honors, and led the team in
goals scored. Despite suffering a season-ending knee injury halfway into his junior season, Lyons still led
Western Michigan in goals. Following offseason knee surgery prior to his senior season, Lyons again led
the team in goals, was named first-team all-MAC, and was a two-time MAC player of the week.
Carie Mueller
Athletic Trainer
Ottawa University (2005)
Fourth Season
Carie Mueller enters her fourth year at San Jacinto College. She came to San Jac after spending two
years as an assistant athletic trainer for the University of North Texas. There, she worked with the
women’s basketball, tennis, and football teams, and was also the insurance liaison for all sports. Prior
to her time at UNT, Mueller spent four years as a head athletic trainer for the Arena Football League.
Originally from Oskaloosa, Kansas, Mueller received her bachelor’s degree in 2005 from Ottawa
University while also on an athletic scholarship for basketball. She then earned her Masters of Athletic
Training degree in 2007 from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center.
Mueller is certified by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification and holds her
license by the state of Texas. She is also a Performance Enhancement Specialist.

the San Jac men’s soccer team to a second
place national finish in 2008, and also played
for Portmore United in the Jamaican National
Premier League in the 2008-09 season. Bernard
turned professional on Dec. 15, 2008, when
he signed with the newly established Austin
Aztex in the USL First Division. He scored his first
professional goal on Sept. 25, 2010 in a 4-2 win
over AC St. Louis. Bernard was a two-time NJCAA
and NSCAA All-American.

Kieron bernard
Dane Richards
Soccer players of any age can gain inspiration from the tales of Dane Richards, Kieron Bernard,
Francisco Calvo, and Mozesh Gyorio, former soccer stars at San Jacinto College who have taken their
game to the next level. There is little doubt that they, and many of their peers, dreamed one day of
making it to the big stage.
Prior to the 2003 season, Richards might not have known exactly where Houston was on the map,
but the San Jacinto College coach at that time, Ben Hunter, knew him. Hunter, who had developed
quite a knack for recruiting players from Jamaica, brought Richards to San Jacinto College that
season. The rest, as they say, is history.
The 2003 team, the last to play for the now-retired Hunter, won 17 straight games before falling
to rival Tyler in the Region XIV title game. Richards, displaying remarkable speed and ball
handling skills, scored 20 goals that season. Playing for former head coach Dr. David Santesteban
the following season, Richards scored 25 times, becoming the all-time career scorer at San
Jacinto College. Along the way, Richards guided the team to a third-place finish at the national
tournament. He went on to lead Clemson University to the NCAA College Cup, earning secondteam NSCAA All-American honors after scoring 11 goals and nine assists in 20 games as a senior.
He was a Hermann Award Finalist that year, and also garnered a NSCAA All-South first team
selection as well as a first-team All-ACC selection.
After graduation, the New York Red Bulls drafted Richards in the second round of the 2007 amateur
draft. Now, the Montego Bay native is living his dream and playing the sport professionally. The Red
Bulls’ midfielder made his first professional start in April 2007 at Columbus and notched his first MLS
point when he assisted on Clint Mathis’ goal on April 15 against FC Dallas. Richards scored his first
career MLS goal on May 5, 2007, against Real Salt Lake. He was a finalist for the 2007 MLS Rookie of
the Year, and is a member of the NJCAA Soccer Hall of Fame class of 2011.
Bernard, who Dr. Santesteban recruited, followed much of the same path as Richards. He came to
San Jacinto College from Spanish Town, Jamaica, and quickly made his mark on the San Jac program.
A crafty defender, Bernard quickly established himself as a premier collegiate player. He captained

Calvo quickly made his way up the professional
ranks after returning to his native Costa Rica
in the summer of 2011 to play for the national
youth team. As luck would have it, one of Costa
Rica’s senior professional players went down
with an injury, and Calvo was asked by national
head coach Ricardo La Volpe to play in a friendly
game against Nigeria, an opportunity most
young athletes only dream about. As the only
non-professional player on the team, he got
the opportunity of a lifetime when was called
off the bench in the 59th minute. Calvo made
such an impression that he was named a reserve
call-up for the Costa Rica team at the 2011 Gold
Cup, and later impressed coach La Volpe to win
him a call-up for the Costa Rica squad at the
2011 Copa America. Calvo went on to play for
Herediano before a stint at Perez Zeledon, where
he scored give goals in 21 matches. In January
2015, Calvo joined Saprissa.
In February 2015, Gyorio signed with the Austin
Aztex, after playing in the North American’
Soccer League’s Minnesota United FC. His rise to
professional soccer began at San Jacinto College
in 2008 when he helped the team finish as the
national runner-up. That year, he was a NJCAA
honorable mention all-American, all-region,
team MVP, and NSCAA second-team all-region
selection. In 2009, he played for the Houston
Dynamo Academy, adding seven goals and
six assists to his record. That same year, Gyorio
represented Canada in the Francophone Games
in Lebanon, earning him a spot on the Canadian
U-20 Team roster.
By no means are these the only San Jacinto
College men’s soccer players to have made it to
the big leagues. Others include Roy Hernandez
(F.C. Excelsiro), Cyprian Hedrick (Sporting Kansas
City), Carlos Villa (CSD Municipal), Ryan Maxwell
(New England Revolution), Brandon Durden
(River Plate Puerto Rico) and Ken Hoerner
(Houston Dynamo reserves). These former
players are living proof that hard work – on the
field and in the classroom – can take you to
where you want to be.

Where Have They Gone?
The opportunity for San Jacinto College soccer players to continue their education and playing careers at four-year institutions is real. Since the program’s
beginning, dozens of San Jac players have been invited to do just that at prestigious colleges and universities across the country. Some are even afforded the
opportunity to play professionally. Here are the players who have moved on following their careers at San Jacinto College.

Surrounded by the monuments of history, the industries
and maritime enterprises of today, and the space age
of tomorrow, San Jacinto College has been serving the
citizens of East Harris County, Texas, since 1961. As one
college with multiple locations, San Jacinto College has a
location nearby the majority of our students. Our college
brings people together for all kinds of academic pursuits,
workforce training, continuing education, and frequent
gatherings of civic, community, and non-profit groups.
San Jacinto College is committed to serving the citizens,
businesses, and industries of East Harris County. At the core
of our values is student success. In fact, we are a recognized
leader in the national student completion movement. San
Jacinto College was named an Achieving the Dream Leader
College in 2011 and received this recognition again in 2014.
We achieved this status through a direct focus on removing
barriers for completion, enhancing support systems, and
emphasizing academic excellence.
Under the new lights of the South Campus soccer field,
San Jac defeated the Dynamo Youth team to open the 2009 season.
The College is also committed to developing a skilled and
trained workforce to meet the growing demands of industry
in our region. We partner with industry to ensure we are
teaching the skills that make our students employable immediately upon completion of their program. We have created
fast-track and stackable credentials to help meet that workforce need and to ensure students have a pathway as they
progress in their careers.
At San Jacinto College, we know that not everyone is a “traditional” student. Goals and scheduling demands are unique, so
we offer courses during the day, during the evening, on weekends, and online. San Jacinto College students choose from
186 degrees and certificates in 46 technical programs and university transfer pathways. Our corporate partners benefit
from a robust training program through the Continuing and Professional Development division, which also offers leisure
learning classes and programs for K-12 teachers through the Aerospace Academy.
San Jacinto College continues to lead in the Gulf Coast through grant-funded partnerships and collaboration with other
colleges and organizations. These funds support student success through academic programs and initiatives promoting
college retention and completion, regional workforce training, scholarships and tuition in various student programs, and
create pathways to higher education and the workforce for middle and high school students.
Whatever path you take, you’ll find a friendly, big-hearted community at San Jacinto College.
