(PCSD) have received
global recognition for
their environmental
work towards sustainable tourism as recipients of the 2011 Virgin Holidays Responsible Tourism Award
for Best in a Marine

awards were presented on Nov. 8, 2011 at the
World Trade Market in London as part of annual
World Tourism Day events.
The PCSD was unable to attend due to high travel
costs and having been allocating much of their
budget towards protecting the Placencia Lagoon.
However, as arranged with the PCSD, Xanadu
Resort Manager Beverley Daguise who had attended the trip on behalf of the Belize Hotel Association (BHA) accepted the award for the Peninusla organization. PCSD’s co-chairperson,
Mary Toy, said the win was a complete surprise.
“When she told me we’d won, I almost burst into
tears,” said Toy.
As stated on the award organizers’ website: “The

a Wednesday morning to make her usual rounds
at the beach in Placencia Village when she spotted a fresh trail of
strange tracks. Trent
wasn’t entirely sure
what they were at
first, but concluded
quite rightly, that they
must have been from
a turtle coming
ashore to nest. Acting
responsibly and wanting to ensure the protection of this critically endangered specie, Trent immediately contacted a

Just several hours before on Oct. 11, while the
full moon was shining, a hawksbill turtle had laid
its eggs on the beach. “I had never seen anything
like this in my 18 years living here,” said Trent.
“I was so excited!” Several ladies in the area
came out to the beach dressed in their nightgowns

While Malu is a
popular darts competitor on the Placencia Peninsula, she
opted to join the San
Pedro Team this year
since Placencia disbanded its darts team
in 2010. This isn't
Malu's first Women's
Singles win. She also
captured the title in
2008.
The three-day tournament took place at a
crowded community
center in Caye Caulker. A total of four teams
participated representing San Pedro, Caye
Caulker, Cayo and Belize City. Players competed
in men and women's singles, females’ doubles

years. Her serious training started when she

These precious eggs will take about 50 to 60 days
to hatch. SEA will be making regular checks on
the nest, which has not been marked for fear of
attracting attention to its location.
SEA’s Science Program Director, Dr. Annelise
Hagan, said it is not unusual for turtles to lay
their eggs on Placencia beach, although it is not
as common as out at the cayes. The last reported

Visiting Fisherman Donates to Placencia Mooring Masters

An avid sports fisherman and frequent visitor to
the Placencia Peninsula has pledged to make a
helpful financial contribution to assist the protection and preservation of Belize’s reef and its fragile marine environment.
In response to a plea for assistance to address a
series of pressing challenges facing the Placencia
Mooring Masters (PMM), Shane Adsett, owner
of Adcor Construction in Canada
(www.adcorconstruction.com) is donating
CA$2,700 (BZ$5,400) to purchase an important
piece of equipment needed for buoy installations.
PMM anchors mooring buoys as a best boating
practice, which allows boats to easily fix their
positions without using traditional drop anchoring. Boats tie on to a line, which is connected to
buoy assembly that is permanently connected to
the sea floor.
Shane’s donation will purchase a new BR67 marine hydraulic hammer drill, which will help current and future planned buoy installations. Since
2006, PMM has had to borrow used drills from
other marine organizations in Belize and experienced challenges with faulty performance and
costly overseas repairs.
Shane’s donation reflects an appreciation for his
eco-activities as a tourist in the Placencia area.
While he has fished all over the world, Shane has
been returning to Placencia waters almost annually over the past 10 years for some of the best
sports fly-fishing he has ever experienced with
group of like-minded Canadians. This year he
stayed on the Peninsula for an additional 10 days
following his yearly caye-based fishing vacation.
During this extension, he was overwhelmed by
his first Belizean diving adventure and was taken
aback by the grandness of Belize’s coral reef.
Upon learning how the reef positively impacts
the fishing and tourism industries in a country
that he enjoys visiting so much, Shane decided
that he would like to take part in its preservation

San Francisco Chef is a Hit at The
Secret Garden Adding Creative Twists
to Local Ingredients
“Sabrina, I have a problem. I can’t have a
conversation with my husband. All he
says is ‘Mmmmm!’” That’s Matilda
Niessen jokingly complaining to the
restaurant co-owner. Matilda and her
husband Patrick Tolmeijer are visiting
Placencia from the Netherlands and are
enjoying their night out at the hot new
restaurant on the Peninsula. They have
just indulged in a slice of chocolate fudge
cake with dark chocolate drizzle and a
hunk of deep dish pumpkin pie with
homemade caramel cream drizzle.
San Francisco, California in the United
States of America is known for its
plethora of ethnic dining options. It’s
considered the culinary leader in the
United States, second only to New York.
And now, one of San Francisco’s awardwinning chefs and his wife have set up
shop in Placencia joining an increasingly
diversified selection of Belizean and
international culinary offerings.

French Creole and Caribbean cuisine
with Pan-Asian cooking and flavoring
techniques. While Rimes brings an
international approach to his cooking, the
ingredients are representative of Belize’s
food offerings. Using only locally
available ingredients, Rimes aims to create something “uncommon and delicious.” Take their killer Ceviche Seafood
Napoleon, a stacked ceviche – fresh local
fish over wasabi guacamole, fresh cream,
lime essence and red chili sauce. "Fresh,

Chef Randy Rimes and his wife Sabrina
are the new proprietors of The Secret
Garden Restaurant and Bar located just
behind Wallen’s Market in Placencia
Village.
The dynamic menu at The Secret Garden
makes an effort to please all palates. Try
their Red Snapper Teppanyaki, a grilled
snapper with unagi sauce served with
gingered rice and spiced Asian slaw or
their Chicken Linguine Arabiatta, a tasty
compote of Italian sausage, chicken,
tomato, onion and pepper tossed in fresh
linguine. Test your curiosity with Chef
Rimes’ Seared Wild Grouper – white
polenta, queso fresco, chipotle aioli,
cilantro pesto and organic vegetables.

Sabrina concocted the cocktail menu,
which features the Secret Garden
Signature Cooler. This delightful
beverage infuses the locally available
soursop fruit (also known as guanábana
in Spanish) with vodka. It’s cool, light
and refreshing.
Chef Rimes and Sabrina have enjoyed
their fast success in the peninsula
restaurant scene and continue to be
inspired to offer the best to their
customers. “Working with what’s available in Belize is so exciting,” said Chef
Rimes who takes great pleasure preparing
fresh fish that within two hours, made its
way from the depths of the sea to his
kitchen.

umalali Beidi or "Voice of the Bight", a
group of Garifuna musicians, was formed in
Seine Bight Village 13 years ago by five close
childhood friends with a mission to carry on the
traditions of their ancestors.
“It just suddenly started,” said Aikin “Nacio”
Palacio, a teacher at St. Alphonsus Roman Catho-
lic Primary School who mainly sings and dances
in the group. “We were doing it before, but just to
have fun.” Nacio explained that recently deceased
member Lloyd Augustine, who was working at
Robert’s Grove Beach Resort, approached his
friends and said, “You know, you guys. I got you
guys a gig. How much do you think we should
charge?” Since that afternoon hanging out in

Seine Bight, Lumalali Beidi has
become an entertainment sensation
at various resorts on the Placencia
Peninsula playing punta, paranda
and john canoe music in their original form.
The group is grieving the loss of
founding member Augustine whose
last wish for Lumalali Beidi before
he fell ill was to compete once
again in the 5th Annual Battle of the
Drums – an increasingly popular
event, which takes place in Punta
Gorda on November 12. Last year
the five-member group took home
an impressive second-place prize in
their very first time competing
against some of the best Garifuna
drummers from Belize, Honduras,
and Guatemala. Remaining members Andy "Twinkles" Arzu, John
Raymond "Esse" Ogaldez, Rupert
"Rock" Thomas and Nacio Palacio
are determined more than ever to
continue promoting their culture
through music.
The members of Lumalali Beidi
were born and raised in Seine Bight
Village where family stories were
frequently told through music. By
performing at various resorts on the
Peninsula, Nacio believes that Lumalali Beidi are spreading the culture worldwide. “That’s very important because people have different perspectives of the Garinagu.
Some people have heard about us,
but they have nothing to actually
relate to, or do they have the firsthand experience to say, well, yes,
this is what I have seen.”
To go further than introducing Peninsula visitors to Garifuna music
and dance, Nacio says that the
group would sometimes invite resort guests to join them for a traditional Garifuna meal in Seine Bight
village. “I believe that living the
culture and feeling the culture
makes you a part of it,” said Nacio.
Lumalali Beidi uses song, dance,
drums and maracas in their performances.
There are two drums: the primero
and the segundo – both made and
maintained by craftsmen in Seine
Bight. Rupert “Rock” Thomas
earned his nickname by mastering
the primero, which is the smaller
drum that gives “all the rhythm and
all the breaking in the music.” Andy
“Twinkles” Arzu plays the segundo,
which functions as the bass. John
Raymond “Esse” Ogaldez, who is
also the principal of St. Alphonsus
Roman Catholic Primary School in
Seine Bight, plays the maracas or
“shakas”, which complete the sound
that calls listeners to sway their
hips.
Lumalali Beidi perform songs that
were passed on from generation to
generation. Nacio explained that the
music comes naturally to them, and
the group rarely practices before
their gigs at the resorts. “It's passed

on to us through our culture. It's a
part of us. We live it.” Nacio said
he’s so interested in his culture, that
he spends his Sundays visiting with
elders in the village. “They'll give
you stories about these songs. Before they even teach you the song,
they actually give you the messages
behind them. Some of their personal experiences are in the songs
… Some are songs of sorrow.”
They are also a way to send messages to one another, and Nacio
advised that you have to read
between the lines to actually know
that it’s about you.
Lumalali Beidi perform every
Thursday and some Saturdays at
Robert's Grove. They have also
played at The Placencia Hotel, Turtle Inn, Green Parrot and Laru
Beya. Audiences may catch accompanying women from Seine Bight
who sometimes join the group in
song and dance. The drumming
troupe is planning to recruit another
m e mb e r t o r e p l a c e L l o y d
Augustine. They are dedicating
their upcoming participation in the
Battle of the Drums to the memory
of their dear friend.

In collaboration with educators at the two primary schools on the Placencia
Peninsula, the Student of the Month Program recognises one student from
each classroom who exemplifies good behaviour and demonstrates academic
excellence. Each student is presented a certificate by their respective teachers
in front of their peers at a special ceremony during campus assembly. Parents
are encouraged to motivate their children to strive for this special honour!

PCSD learned of their race in the competition
about six months ago and still have no clue who
nominated their organization. It wasn’t until a
month ago, that they discovered they were finalists, which was also a shocker for the PCSD
team.

order to offset Adcor’s carbon footprint in Canada, he implemented a
tree-planting program using
company revenue to purchase these
trees. In January 2011, while on a
fishing expedition in Sudan, he
collaborated with the local government and the Daya Organization for
Children to build a school for orphans, child soldiers, and children
with physical and/or developmental
handicaps. Shane now sits on the
DAYA board of directors as project
developer and his company is providing supervision and project management for the building of the
school.

The Peninsula Citizens for Sustainable Development was formed in 2006 by concerned residents
from all communities on the Placencia Peninsula
in southern Belize to address unsustainable tourism development of the Peninsula. Over the past
five years, the not-for-profit organization has
expanded its agenda to target pollution, dredging
in fragile environments and destruction of wetlands and garbage and sewage management.
PCSD also works to preserve local cultures and
ensure continued ownership and governance of
the Peninsula by local businesses and residents.
The Responsible Tourism Awards are organized
by founder responsibletravel.com, with support
from UK-based media partners Metro Newspaper, Geographical Magazine (the magazine of the
Royal Geographical Society), and World Travel
obstacles over the past month in
addition to our need of a new drill.
In September PMM secured a
US$6,000 donation of much needed
materials to upgrade some existing
anchor mooring buoys and new installations originally planned to be
installed by end of October. Due to
unforeseen shipment delays, these
installations are expected to be completed by the end of November.
While PMM is very thankful to the
Ministry of Tourism and the Belize
Tourism Board for facilitating
PMM’s petition for duty exemption,
the required payments for General
Sales Tax (GST) and Environmental
Tax (ET) have depleted our installation and maintenance budget by
BZ$2,000.
PMM urgently needs to replace the
PMM funds spent on taxes to clear
donated materials at customs. To

wristbands, slap straps (neoprene
dive mask straps) and PMM T-shirts
featuring the original artwork of
renowned Placencia Artist Anton

Teaches Scuba Diving 101
to Students at St. John’s

“What would you like to be when you grow up?”
This was the question posed to the students of
Standard 4 of St. John’s Memorial Primary
School. One student named Sam answered, “I
want to be a Scuba Diver.” So, his teacher gave
him an assignment to find someone to visit his
classroom and make a presentation on the world
of diving. After the boy’s day at school, he approached General Manager and Owner of Splash
Diver Center, Patty Ramirez for help. She was
Sam’s first choice since he is always at the Dive
Center, as his mother works as the head housekeeper, and Ramirez takes him to school regularly.
Ramirez decided to ask her office assistant Marco
Supall to make the presentation. Supall started
out as a Splash Junior Member in 2008 and was
thought to be an exemplary role model for young
aspiring divers. He has worked his way up the
ladder in the levels of diving from a discovery
scuba diver to a dive master apprentice.
Supall gladly accepted the task and started working on his presentation. After going over his
quick key summaries and pictures with Patty, he
was ready.
Upon arriving at the school, he was welcomed by
the Principal Ms. Martinez who escorted him to
Standard 4 classrooms. The visit brought a cloud
of nostalgia over Supall. “I remember my days as
a student. Those days were fun and full of excitement,” said Supall.
Supall introduced himself to the class and told
them how honored he was to speak to them about
what being a scuba diver was all about. Supall
said he felt appreciated because the class greeted
him with a warm welcome.
He covered the following subjects:
• Scuba Diving in Placencia
• Placencia being home to several marine reserves and world heritage sites
• Why tourists travel to Belize and Placencia
to Scuba Dive
• How he started out as Junior Diver

The children were very attentive during the presentation, and their glowing eyes showed that they
were full of interest, especially in the activities
Splash offers to young people their age. The students were encouraged to sign up for activities
such as the annual clean up at Laughing Bird Marine Park, which happens every year on Earth
Day with Splash in collaboration with the Southern Environmental Association (SEA). Students
were also encouraged to sign up for the Splash
Junior Club, which teaches youths how to become a scuba diver with encouragement to advance through the different levels of diving.
Splash stands behind educating the young minds
of the Placencia Peninsula. Through the leadership of Patty Ramirez and the support of many
sponsors, Splash has always made education a
priority.
Splash owes a big thank you to its new and returning guests, as proceeds from their diving
packages goes toward the Junior Club, which is
free to children starting at age 10.

The last 2 female dogs on Bugle Caye have now
been spayed. PHS would still like to find adoptive homes for these dogs. If anyone knows of a
possible placement for one or all of these dogs,

Dogs do see in color. However, they see differently than most people do and are less able to
distinguish between colors. Veterinary ophthalmologists have determined that dogs see like
people who have red/green color blindness.
Dogs’ eyes have receptors for blue and green
shades, but not for red shades. As a result, it appears that dogs cannot easily distinguish between
yellow, green and red, but they can identify different shades of blue, purple and gray.
Color is only one of many visual stimuli that dogs
detect in their environment. Brightness, contrast,
and especially motion, are extremely important to
a dog’s interpretation of what it sees.

FLAG RAISING CEREMONY
On September 20, the Rotary Club of Placencia
held the annual Flag Raising Ceremony at the
basketball court. As has been the case for the last
several years, the evening started with another
outstanding performance by Jim and Anna Mensies aka Truckee Graphite. Jim and Anna always
put on a show that entertains all ages with their
Christian message conveyed through song, dance,
and games such as hula hoop contests, bubble
blowing contests, and an air drumming competition. This year, Jim and Anna were joined by Bob
Thomas, Lydia Loewen, and Kirwin Martinez for
many of their songs, making for a memorable
Shortly after 11 p.m., Mistress of Ceremonies
Maretha McCullock introduced Pastor Percy Neal
who delivered the Belize National Prayer and
Fred Cabral delivered a Spanish Prayer to begin
the ceremonies leading up to the raising of the
flag. Rotary Club of Placencia President Steve
Wade then took the stage to formally welcome all
in attendance and honored Mary Toy, the Placencia Fishermen’s Cooperative, Southern Environmental Association, the Placencia Tourism Center, Merlene Bernard, Wallen’s Market, Lydia’s
Guest House, Tipsy Tuna, The Moorings, and
Village Council Honoree Teacher Rosalyn Eiley
for their substantial contributions to improving
life in the Community. These honorees have demonstrated over the years a willingness to help and
give back to the Community and their contributions have been instrumental in making Placencia
what it is today.
The recognition of the honorees was followed by
Placencia Village Council Chairman Charles Leslie, Jr., who then turned the podium over to Fred
Cabral, who delivered a moving tribute to the late
George Price, the first Prime Minister of Belize.
Police Constable #1109 Godwin Augustine and
Police Constable #934 David Mejia then marched
on to the field and, at midnight, raised the flag as
the Belize National Anthem was beautifully sung
by Vanya Ferrel. The evening concluded with a
prayer in Spanish by Pastor Byron Bosch and a
prayer by Pastor Percy Neal.
We wish to thank all that came out to participate
in this ceremony celebrating Belize’s independence with special thanks to our honorees, Pastors
Neal and Bosch, Fred Cabral, Charles Leslie, Jr.,
Constables Augustine and Mejia, Vanya Ferrel,
Truckee Graphite (Jim Mensies, Anna Mensies,

Placencia Village Council Creates Partnership with Business Community
To Generate Funds for the Placencia Sports Complex
A promising revenue generator is in place for
Placencia Village.
The Placencia Sports Complex Upgrade Zone is a
new project initiated by the Placencia Village
Council (PVC), which aims to support local businesses and tourism, as well as the maintenance of
the football field and basketball court in Placencia Village.
The PVC is leasing space alongside the football
field facing the main road and along the basketball court for businesses and parking. Rental fees
vary on business category and the PVC estimates
annual revenue of $30,000 generated through
rental fees.
According to PVC Chairman Charles Leslie, Jr.,
all buildings will have to abide by a code and
density will be controlled. Leslie said that the
PVC is making efforts to diversify the businesses.
A committee was established to lead the project
and process all application forms. Members
include Dean Ferrel (Chairman) Charles Leslie
Jr., Venancio Chee, Lloydia Caballero, Dr. Alexis

DICTIONARY DISTRIBUTION
In September and early October, the Rotary Club
of Placencia performed their annual dictionary
distribution to all Std. III students in Seine Bight
Village, Placencia Village, Independence, and
Monkey River. As has been the case the last few
years, the dictionaries were donated by Linda
Thornton of Cardelli Shrimp Farms and each dictionary was personalized with the student’s name
by employees of Tropic Air under the direction of
Placencia Rotarian Sandra Johnson. We wish to
thank Linda Thornton for her generous donation,
Sandra Johnson and the employees of Tropic Air
for their efforts, and dictionary distributors Steve
Wade, Jim Weller, Wanda Stakutis and Greg
Valiton. Special thanks also go to Ivan Leslie for

One of the Rotary Club of Placencia’s more active partners in programs and projects here has
been the Rotary Club of Edmonton West, Canada. With significant and generous help from
them, we have provided assistance to the primary
schools in Seine Bight Village and Placencia Vil-

Chairman Leslie said the community has been
very receptive to the project. “I am extremely
pleased that we are getting something done for
the sports area; things have happened, but it never
became a money generator in a proper manner,”
said Leslie.
Tenants start their one-year lease officially on

support from various entities on the peninsula.
The Placencia Sidewalk Committee responded

a grant of surplus funds totaling over $13,000. An
