LES HIGHLIGHTS: We’ve had a full and exciting Spring! Here are just a few things that happened:

CONGRATULATIONS to 3/4K:
Allison Kennedy from Mrs. Kubanek’s class entered the MIX 96 Class of the Month contest and won a
delicious prize for all of 3/4K! On Wednesday, May 13th, Corny Rempel from MIX 96 along with his
crew showed up at Landmark Elementary with sub sandwiches and cookies from

also received a variety of prizes donated by Steinbach businesses. Probably the best thing was spending
the lunch hour with Corny Rempel. Based on the sounds coming from that classroom, a great time was
had by all!
WISE WORKSHOPS
Each of our classes participated in a science workshop brought to their
classrooms by WISE Kid-Netic Energy.
Mrs. Penner/Mr. Dirk’s class was able to perform open heart surgery!
CONGRATULATIONS to the L.E.S. 4X100m RELAY TEAMS! These teams
will be competing on June 3rd at the Track and Field Meet at Stoneybrook
Middle School.

PARENTS DID YOU KNOW…?
Next school year, Landmark Elementary is planning on introducing the Roots of
Empathy program with some of our students.
Empathy is the ability to identify with another person’s feelings and “is central to
successful social relationships in all stages of life.” (www.rootsofempathy.org.)
Sadly, the ability to empathize with others is a declining skill which somewhat
explains the increased levels of bullying and aggression in people of all ages.
According to Time Magazine, “the most profound and lasting way to reverse the
empathy decline is to teach empathy skills in the classroom. The world’s most effective program, Roots
of Empathy, began in Canada and is spreading worldwide: over half a million children have done it. How
does it work? The teacher is a baby who visits a class group regularly over a year. The children sit around
the baby and discuss questions: What’s she thinking? What’s she feeling? It’s a stepping stone to
developing their empathic imaginations. And it works, increasing empathy levels, boosting cooperation,
reducing school yard bullying and even increasing general academic attainment.” TIME Magazine
November 06, 2014 (New York, NY, USA).
In order to run this program, LES will be training
two ‘in-house’ instructors, each of whom will
instruct one class of students 27 times in the
school year. The classroom teacher will not
instruct the program but will rather join the
students in the experience of learning from the
instructor and the baby. For this coming year,
only two classes will take part in the program.
WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU….? If you have a
baby who will be 2 – 4 months old in September or
October and, if you would be willing to visit the same
class with your baby once per month for nine consecutive months, check out www.rootsofempathy.org

PRESENTS
…
A Rhubarb Revival
Rhubarb is making a comeback in gardens and kitchens and we want you and your child to have
an opportunity to join in the fun by participating in our AFTER-SCHOOL COOKING
WORKSHOP.
PARENTS, you and your child are invited to take part in a cooking workshop led by Rebecca
Hiebert from FRUIT SHARE (http://fruitsharesteinbach.ca/) . Under Rebecca’s direction, you will
prepare a rhubarb freezer jam and crisp that you can take home and eat right away! All
ingredients will be supplied; although you are welcome to bring your rhubarb if you wish. Also,
participants are asked to bring a 9X13 pan and a 4L pot.





Where: Landmark Elementary Art Room
Cost: $10 for both parent and child
Registration: If interested, pick up a registration form at the school office. There
is space for 8 parent/child teams. Session registration is on a first come first served basis, with
a draw if necessary. All registration money is returned to those who are not able to get into
the “Harvest Joy” session and you will be notified either way. DEADLINE TO REGISTER
IS JUNE 4th.

It’s hard to believe that we are already into the month of June. With just
a few weeks to go, we have a number of activities and events planned along with some important information.
Please take note of the following:

Tuesday, June 9th - Primary Folk Dance Performance - 10:55 a.m. Parents welcome.

Tuesday, June 9th - Harvest Joy 4:00 - 5:30 p.m. See page 4 for details.

Wednesday, June 17th - Kindergarten Celebration at 6:30 p.m.

Thursday, June 18th - School Community Connections Event from 4:30 - 6:30 p.m.
Thursday, June 25th - Grade 6 Farewell @ Landmark Elementary at 11:00 a.m. - family members are
welcome
Thursday, June 25th - K-3 Run, Jump and Throw at 1:00 p.m.— All Kindergarten students attend in the
p.m. only. Please note that there is NO picnic and that this is a STUDENT ONLY event.



Friday, June 26th - Grades 4-6 at Lilac all day

Watch for information from your child(ren)’s teacher regarding field trips.
Report Cards:

Tuesday, June 30th - Our K-6 year-end report cards will be emailed to those who have requested
receiving report cards that way. They will also be mailed along with the supply lists for fall. Expect the
mailed reports within the first few days of July. If you would like an emailed version sent on the 30th of
June and have not requested emailed report cards until now, it is not too late to make this request.
Please contact the school office.
Class Lists:

The process for creating our 2015-2016 class lists has already begun. There are a number of factors
that need to be considered when developing these lists such as achievement, behavior, group dynamics,
learning styles, etc. Please note that requests for class placements are discouraged, but may be made
for educational reasons only. Please submit your requests in writing to our office by June 5th for
consideration.
Final Newsletter:

Our final newsletter of the year containing our Community Report will be emailed on Wednesday, June
24th.
Lost & Found:

If you have a chance over the next few weeks, please make sure you stop by and check out our Lost &
Found. It is currently located near the Kindergarten Room but will soon be put on display in our main
hallway until the end of June.
Some Summer Weather Cautions:

Dress Code: As the weather gets warmer, please remember that clothing needs to be appropriate for
school.

Footwear: Students are allowed to wear flip-flops to school but they still need to change into some
indoor footwear when they arrive. Caution: We have had several students injure their feet while
wearing flip-flops. A more protective shoe is recommended.

Energy Drinks and Pop Drinks: Energy drinks are not permitted at school or on a school event due
to the possible adverse effects on children. Pop drinks may be brought for lunch or field trips if
necessary, but will be stored temporarily if students are drinking from them before school or at recess
time.

2015-2016 CLASS & TEACHING STAFF UPDATES
We first begin by saying good-bye to Mrs. Janice Peters who is retiring after
25 years of teaching.
To Mrs. Hillier and Mrs. Penner we say, “Hope to see you in the fall with
your babies!” Mrs. Hillier is expecting her baby in July and Mrs. Penner is
expecting in October. Both teachers are taking a year off to enjoy
parenthood!
Also, congratulations to Mrs. Kubanek on her new job as a Hanover School
Division Learning Coach! We will miss all of you next year!

MEET THE TEACHER NIGHT—SEPTEMBER 8TH, 2015
We would like to invite you to our annual Meet the Teacher Night at Landmark Elementary School. It is set for Tuesday,
September 8th (the night before school starts) from 4:00-5:30 p.m. This evening provides parents, students, and teachers
the opportunity to get to meet each other before the first day of school, increases the level of comfort for each student with
his/her teacher, and allows time for the student to unpack school supplies and “settle in,” thereby reducing anxiety on the first
school day.
REFRESHMENTS WILL BE SERVED!
A table will be set up to allow you to update information that may have changed in the last year and
to sign papers for internet use and other permissions required for the coming year.
Please plan to spend approximately 10-15 minutes per classroom meeting your child/children’s
teachers. For those who are heading into Kindergarten, you are also welcome to join us during the
evening. You may bring your backpacks, but please be reminded that you will have an opportunity
to meet one-on-one during your interview time with Mrs. Ens in the days that follow.

STRONG CONNECTIONS - SEPTEMBER 18TH & 21ST, 2015
RATIONALE:
The purpose of Strong Connections is to enhance beginning of the year classroom assessment for all
children. It includes observation and assessment both in the classroom and on an individual basis. A
few weeks into the school year, two days are chosen during which half of the children attend school
one day and half on the second day. This provides an opportunity for teachers to extend and
consolidate their understanding of each child through one-to-one interview/assessment times. This will
facilitate teachers in planning for instruction that will effectively address unique learning needs as early
as possible in the new school year as well as creating objective data to inform school planning.
WHAT WILL TEACHERS LEARN THROUGH STRONG CONNECTIONS?
Teachers will be working individually with their students in an atmosphere of support and
encouragement and have an opportunity to collect first-hand information about things such as how they
learn, their confidence as learners, the learning strategies they possess, their reading, writing and
mathematical skills, their approach to problem-solving, their attitudes toward school and learning and
their ability to reflect upon and set goals for their learning.
HOW WILL IT WORK?
Strong Connections at Landmark Elementary School is scheduled for September 18th & 21st, 2015.
Students will be asked to attend either on the Friday or Monday. With half of the students present, we
will then further divide them up to allow each homeroom teacher the opportunity to meet one-on-one
with each student to participate in assessment activities in language arts and mathematics. This is an
opportunity for teachers to gather data about each child’s learning that may not be evident during
whole class instruction. It is also an opportunity to further develop the teacher-student relationship to
strengthen the connection. Stay tuned for more information in our year-end newsletter. The date will
be in the year end report card that your child is expected to attend school.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
For fall, we are in need of volunteers to provide and serve hot lunches for our students on Fridays.
This program can not run if we don’t have enough volunteers.
Please call the school office ASAP to let us know if you have one or two
hours to spare monthly from October to May to help in this service.

WISE Kid-Netic Energy Science and Engineering day camp is
coming to Steinbach this summer!
When: August 10th – 14th
Where: Southwood School
WISE Kid-Netic Energy registration is currently open. There are 40 camper spots available, open to
kids ages 9 – 12, by December 31, 2015. Each camp day will have a different science or engineering
theme that will be explored with cool activities! This year’s theme days include: Agriculture, Chemistry,
How It’s Made, In Sickness and In Heath, and Codemakers. Registration fees are $100 and are on a
first-come, first-serve basis. Registration is available online at www.wisekidneticenergy.ca, or you can call

We “R” Changing the Culture of Waste
Our Earth is a shared place. Each person is one of over seven billion people on the planet. The action of
ONE, if multiplied by seven billion repeated actions could create something incredibly positive or
devastatingly negative. For each of us, there must be a starting point, a place where we are convinced of
the need to reconsider how our actions affect the planet. Then we must take a step, even if it is small,
and be committed to making a difference where we are. The “three R’s” may be your start, but consider
a few more “R’s” for changing the culture of waste in your home.
Reduce – Reduce the use of consumable goods where possible – buy what you need. Reduce the
amount of packaging material and inform suppliers of their need for reduction. Reduce
your dependence on products made of non-renewable resources.
