As this child’s voice, Pat has worked with steady compassion to keep the focus on Jay’s best interests and getting services to meet his substantial needs. Her consistent voice has informed the judge about his continuing need for a safe and secure therapeutic education, finding the right mix of medication and therapy to calm his anger without blunting his personality, and encouraging the involvement of his family. Terri Z Greenberg, Executive Director Jay recently wrote the poem below for Pat, whom he has come to trust and rely on for help and support. On this one occasion, he shed his armor and shared the voice from within. Pat earned these words, earned the privilege of hearing his true voice, through her consistent presence and persistent advocacy. Jay is not the only one who relies on Pat to serve his best interests. The judge calls upon her. The family trusts her. She is a valued resource for his treatment providers and caretakers. Voicing our Thanks – CASA board and staff thank our dedicated volunteers Nearly 200 volunteers and guests gathered at Kemper Lakes Golf Course on April 28th so the board could thank dedicated volunteers for their service to our children during April, Child Abuse Prevention Month. Ms. Onie Riley, a former foster child and current Supervisor of Educational Services at UCAN who attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign on a four-year academic scholarship from DCFS was the guest speaker for the evening. She spoke of the difference even one person can make on the life of a child. We thanked, with great appreciation, Aon Hewitt, GFX and Underwriters for their ongoing in-kind donations. And we highlighted those volunteers that reached milestones in their tenure as CASA volunteers. Seven Years of Service Diane Hornstein, Diane Salam, Mary Barber and Debbie Silverstein Onie Riley, speaker For ten years, CASA children counted on Pat Braskich, Robyn Goulding, Barbara A. Lore Mayo, Patricia Smarto, Rochelle Siegel, and Cindy Smith. Fifty-seven other volunteers were recognized for their commitment to CASA and our children over a seven, five, and two-year time period. In Kind–Kind thanks: Dave McKeon, Board VP presents to Don Minner CASA board member & Sr. Director, Marketing & Communications Aon Hewitt Terri Zenner Greenberg welcomed volunteers, guests, board members, court personnel and the Honorable Judge Lessman and Judge Waites and The Honorable Judge Waites and shared a key statistic in her remarks. In 2009, Lessman celebrate our volunteers 230 volunteers provided a strong clear voice for 545 abused and neglected children in the foster care system. But for our volunteers, the understanding that our children count on us—one case at a time, matters more than the overall statistics. CASA volunteers change the life of a child, one child at a time. Please contact the CASA office if the timing is right for you to become a CASA volunteer. In Kind–Kind thanks: Dave McKeon, Board VP presents to Jerry Stricker, VP of Operations at Underwriters Laboratories And to our over 250 CASA volunteers, Thank you for your countless hours of dedication to our children, one child at a time. With great appreciation, The CASA board and staff Celebrating 5 years Drew Waitley CASA and board member, Suzanne Cash and Roxanne Wichlin 3 “ An Educated Voice: Continuing Education Builds CASA Volunteer Expertise Throughout the workshop, Pfarr helped CASAs recognize their own misconceptions and become more skilled at establishing mutual respect across class barriers— essential skills for CASAs as they advocate for foster children and their families. Life experience is a valuable tool for CASA volunteers. Ironically, it may also hamper CASA efforts to help children in poverty and their families. That’s the message that Jodi Pfarr brought to more than 120 participants in the “Bridges Out of Poverty” workshop, February 20, 2010, at the Aon Hewitt campus in Lincolnshire. The workshop was one of many continuing education offerings for Lake County CASA volunteers this year. CASA Lake County volunteers were joined at the full-day “Bridges” workshop by CASAs from DuPage, Kane and McHenry Counties as well as professionals from the Nineteenth Judicial Circuit’s Juvenile Division and participants from area faith-based organizations. Workshop leader Jodi Pfarr is a nationally known speaker on the impact of class prejudice on the success of social services. Throughout the workshop, Pfarr helped CASA volunteers recognize their own misconceptions and become more skilled at establishing mutual respect across class barriers—essential skills for CASAs as they advocate for foster children and their families. Special thanks to Aon Hewitt, workshop host, for their generous sponsorship of this and other continuing education opportunities for CASA volunteers. A Voice of Praise Matching Gifts CASA Lake County’s Executive Director Receives Forefront Award Double or even triple the value of your gift with your employer’s Matching Gift Program The Lake County Journal awarded CASA Lake County’s Executive Director with a ForeFronts 2010 Award in appreciation of her overall commitment to making Lake County an exceptional place to live. Your support of CASA Lake County enables us to ensure EVERY abused and neglected child in Lake County has a CASA advocate. The downturn in the economy provides yet an additional stress on already vulnerable families. Not surprisingly abuse and neglect numbers are on the rise. Terri Zenner Greenberg’s journey began 18 years ago when she was looking for holiday cards that benefited a charity. CASA seeped into her heart and spirit. A year later CASA Lake County was formed and she stepped into the first training class. Fast forward 17 years and Terri’s CASA journey has taken her from Advocate of the Year to an Advocate Manager, Director of Advocate Services, and now, Executive Director and National Executive Director of the Year. Kudos to Terri Zenner Greenberg for embracing CASA and our children. Like all great CASAs, she is here for the long-term! 4 CASA Lake County Just ask your resource department for a matching form, send it to us, and we’ll complete the paperwork. Chaired by Bob and Debbie Silverstein, this event has an exemplary dedicated committee comprised of nearly 50 Voice of a Board Member: CASA Board Member, George Kokkines Giving Back by Giving Children a Safe Future Profession: George graduated from the University of Michigan and Harvard Law School. Since 2005, George has worked at TAP Pharmaceuticals and then Takeda, when these two companies merged. Currently, he is Associate General Counsel, Litigation & Compliance. Why CASA? George was introduced to CASA Lake County in 2009 through Takeda’s corporate partnership. Takeda has a strong sense of corporate social responsibility. Driven by a commitment to “supporting the communities around us through a spirit of giving back,” Takeda agreed to become a corporate sponsor of CASA Lake County. Takeda also accepted CASA’s invitation to have one of its leaders join the CASA board. George was personally looking for an opportunity to volunteer his time for a local organization that makes a difference in the community. He was impressed that CASA volunteers make the world a safer one for our youth. As a litigator, he felt that CASA volunteers’ presence in the courtroom aligned well with his profession. George looks forward to sharing his legal skills to benefit the CASA program and the children we serve. Free time: In George’s free time, he can be found spending time with his children and reading. George enjoyed CASA Lake County’s Golf for a Child Invitational at Kemper and looks forward to next year’s event on June 20, 2011. CASA Lake County thanks George and Takeda for investing in making our communities healthier and safer. 5 Volunteer Voice, Jill Ballock A Child’s Voice in Court: A Voice of Commitment, Belief and Appreciation A Teacher: Still Learning, Still Imparting Life-Long Lessons Family: I met my husband, Bill, while I was a Fulbright Exchange Teacher in England. We have been married for 42 years. Profession: I began my career as a teacher and became a principal, administrator and then a superintendent. At the time, I was the first female superintendent in Lake County. I speak my mind and that voice was integral to my work. I am now retired and continue to use my voice as a volunteer. Why CASA? I heard about CASA Lake County almost a decade ago now. I saw an ad in the paper. Since training, I have been fortunate to have Liz Hazeltine as my manager. She is an advocate’s advocate. Making a difference in a child’s life, what I have learned: I am now working with my fifth family. I have learned that I make a difference while the children might never know it. I have learned to trust intuition and investigate when things just don’t seem right. I have learned to be open, to be aware of my own biases and be open to examining each case and situation on its own merits. Families: I have also learned to appreciate that there are many constellations of family that can support a child. I now understand that families might initially distrust my “whiteness” but through my actions, I have gained their trust. One of the 6 CASA Lake County grandmothers in a case gave me a hug at the end, and that spoke volumes. Psychiatric Placement: My current case made me appreciate the positive impact that temporary psychiatric placement can make. My child recently thanked the staff for helping him share his feelings. A huge breakthrough for him. What I tell my CASA Kids: I tell them, “I believe in you. I will be wherever you will be.” It took the child in my current case awhile to believe me. Recently he called me to tell me he was going to a new home. That is when I realized he knew I would really be there for him. Jill’s Advocate Manager, Liz Hazeltine says “Jill Ballock exemplifies what all CASA volunteers strive for when working on a case: she is committed, persistent, and professional. She has a laser-like focus on achieving what is in the best interests of the children she represents. On all of her cases, she has developed excellent partnership relationships with all the people that surround a child, and those relationships are built upon her unflagging humor and tremendous sympathy, combined with a backbone of steel. The children know they can count on Jill -- that wherever they go, she will be there. The lives of 11 children have been safer, enriched and more stable for having Jill involved with their cases.” I am a donor to CASA Lake County because: I can see a direct impact that donations make for our kids here in Lake County. Training CASA volunteers is expensive and supervising them so that we continue to advocate appropriately is a continued expense. I am proud that my friends supported me generously in the recent Forgotten Children campaign. What I believe: Nothing we do for children is ever wasted. CASA Lake County thanks Jill for ensuring the safety of our children, regardless of where they call home. Voicing Strong Support for CASA Lake County With Each Swing! Golf Outing Raises Nearly $100,000 For Casa Lake County CASA Lake County’s 11th Annual Golf for a Child Invitational, sponsored by CDW and Lundbeck Inc. raised nearly $100,000. Our Newest Volunteer Voices Congratulations to our new CASA Volunteers The Effectiveness of CASA Programs Below is a summary of results from the Caliber study, the audit of the Office of the Inspector General, and other CASA studies selected by researchers at the University of California, Fresno Medical Education program for their methodological quality. 2010 Spring Evening Class Left to Right: Robin Henn, Joanna Lynn, Jackie Karlin, Jordana Kafka, Hilda Waujani Moser, Lauren deGrazia, Judge Lessman, Judge Ceckowski, Donna Cole, Nikki Reuter, Susan Mock, Sybil Barnes CASA volunteers spend significantly more time in contact with a child than a paid Guardian ad Litem attorney. When a CASA volunteer is assigned, more services are ordered for children and families. A child with a CASA volunteer is less likely to reenter the child welfare system. The proportion of reentries is consistently reduced by half. 20% more CASA children passed all of their academic courses than in the non-CASA group. 2010 Winter Morning Class Left to Right: Heidi Shumaker, Rozina Lopez, Kathy Poulos, Tracy Hartlieb, Kelly Ulreich, Judge Lessman, Lynda Briesemeister, Belinda Reed, Kristine Rickert, Amanda Howland, Graham Witt Not Pictured: David Mays, Mary Mays, Ted Sommers CASA children experienced significantly fewer placements in year one than the comparison group. 2010 Winter Evening Class Front row: Stephanie Kunz, Pete Ross, Lisa O’Brien, Stephanie Nagel, Sonja Peters-Cooprider, Joan Rehm. Second row: Jennifer Steinberg, Judge Ceckowski, Terri Greenberg, Marcie Pickard, Gwen Ilori, Beth Sheehan-Lucas, Mary Neu-Stoppelman, Liz Roop. Missing: Liz Monroe and Jane Williams 10 CASA Lake County An Educated Voice: Fostering Futures CASA Lake County to Pilot New Program to Help Children Transition from Foster Care to Successful, Independent Adults CASA Lake County of has been selected as a site and awarded a grant for $75,000 to help launch a new national program designed to address the unique challenges faced by youths as they leave foster care and become independent adults. CASA Lake County has invited CASA programs from DuPage, Kane and McHenry to participate in the training and ongoing enrichment. This new program, titled Fostering Futures, was developed by The National Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Association, with the generous support from the Walmart Foundation. “ Fostering Futures is based on a research model and study out of the University of Michigan that helps young people achieve their full potential by promoting a positive self-identity, setting goals for the future and planning to achieve those goals. This model, titled Possible Selves, has been used with middle school, high school and college-aged students and has led to significantly better outcomes for these youth. With our investment in Fostering Futures, we extend our commitment to make a lasting difference in the lives of foster youth aging out of the system. involvement and mental health issues. The Fostering Futures program will engage CASA volunteers as advocates for and advisors to foster youth ages 13 – 21, with the goal of helping them identify supportive adult connections and develop specific transition plans for making a successful transition from foster care to independent, successful adults. “With our investment in Fostering Futures, we extend our commitment to make a lasting difference in the lives of foster youth aging out of the system,” said Margaret McKenna, president of the Walmart Foundation. “Our support of Fostering Futures is a natural extension of Walmart’s local commitment to the CASA cause. Our stores and associates have long supported their local CASA programs through our Volunteerism Always Pays program.” Each year in Illinois, an estimated 1,250 young people between the ages of 18 to 21 are legally required to emancipate – or age out – from the foster care system. Aging out of foster care without a life plan or preparation puts these vulnerable youths at great risk. These risks include homelessness, unemployment, substance abuse, criminal 11 Voices of Support: Forgotten Children Campaign CASA Volunteers, Friends of CASA and 5/3 Bank helped raise funds and awareness.
