1. Connecting the hardware
a) Connecting the white USB Converter between the Video Player and the Computer.

If the video player does not have A/V output sockets, then you may need to use a Scart to A/V
converter. These are available separately, (not sold by Avanquest). If the converter is switchable,
then Output will need to be selected. Please note that some converters are either Output or Input
only rather than switchable, so ensure that an Output one is purchased.
b) Install the program.

The light on the USB converter should glow blue, but this may be different if other brands of
converter are in the package. The light just means that the USB connection is recognised. It does
not mean that the program is working correctly or that the video player is correctly connected to the
converter.
c) Run the program.
You can close the Wizard that starts up when the program runs.
Select Capture, and then Other Devices.
Under Video Device select WDM 2861 Capture
Under Select Audio Device select Line (USB EMP Audio Device)

2. Troubleshooting
a) I am using Windows 7 or Windows 64-bit and I cannot get any sound from my video.
On some Windows 7 or 64-bit machines the sound driver needs to be installed manually. Please
follow the instructions below to do this:
1. Explore the VHS to DVD Converter disc and browse to the SUPPORT\USBAUDIO folder.
2. Copy the USBAUDIO.sys file to your Windows\System32 and Windows\Syswow64(64-bit
Windows only) folder.
3. Launch Windows Device Manager. To do this:
a) Right click on Computer in the Start menu
b) Select Properties
c) Click on Device Manager in the left pane
4. Expand Sound, video and game controller
5. Select USB 2861 Device
6. Right click and select Update driver software
7. Select Browse my computer for driver software
8. Select Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer
9. Select USB Audio device (not USB EMP Audio Device)
It you cannot see both options, ensure that Show Compatible Hardware is ticked.


10. Click on Next

12. Repeat steps 3 to 11 above only select USB EMP Audio Device at step 5 instead. Still only select
USB Audio Device at step 9 not USB EMP Audio Device.
NOTE If you still do not have any sound, deactivate and reactivate Enable Audio Preview option in
the software. This option is available in the Select Audio Device box on the main screen.

b) USB EMP Audio device shows: This device cannot start. (Code 10)
In Device Manager you get a yellow warning triangle against USB EMP Audio Device, and when
selected it shows This device cannot start. (Code 10):
This means that USB EMP Audio Device was selected instead of USB Audio Device when carrying
out the instruction 9 on page 3.

c) I have no picture
Initially ensure that the computer meets the minimum graphics requirement of a 128 MB DirectX 9
compatible Video card and has Pixel Shader V1.3 (for 3D effects and transitions), set at 1024 x 768
resolution. Also 1GB of RAM minimum. If it is a laptop with a basic graphics chipset then it's likely
that it will not be able to display the images correctly. We can check this for you if you are not sure.
If the graphics card meets the minimum requirements then after you have selected Capture, ensure
that you have the correct type of device selected next to it. The first 3 options are for digital devices,
so if you are using an analogue VHS player then select Other Devices.
Check that WDM 2861 Capture is selected under Video Device. See Connecting the hardware page
2.
If you still have no picture then check that the video player is actually outputting a video signal by
plugging the yellow plug into a TV with video AV input sockets and see if you get a picture on the AV
channel. If you get a picture then the video player and the cables are working correctly. If you do
not get a picture then it may be a fault with the video player output socket, or it may be a faulty
cable. To check the cable temporarily disconnect the yellow cable at both ends and use the red
cable instead. If the fault persists then try a different output from the video player if one is available,
such as the Scart connector. You will need to use a Scart to A/V converter for this as described at the
beginning of this guide.
