Convenient controls-lgnition-starter switch location at right of steering column affords extra convenience. These are the same 5/4" sealed beams as in other Lincoln-Mercury vehicles. The outboard lamps, with SO-watt elements at center of each bulb, provide low-beam illumination. All four lamps serve for high-beam lighting with 15O-watt total power-5O/6 greater than in competitive cars with single headlamps. Full-vacuum distributor-gets commands for spark advance and retard through a vacuum line to the carburetor. Valve train for the in-line Comet "6" has hydraulic valve lifters, pressure-lubricated rocker arm shaft, and rotating-type valves which are free to turn slightly with each opening and closing. Aluminized intake valves and precisionmolded austenitic steel exhaust valves receive anti-corrosion treatment for valve stems for smoother operation and durability. Valve stem diameter is increased I3/" to .34" for greater strength and increased wear surface. Hydraulic valve lifters for the Comet "6" are actuated by high-lift cams. These hydraulic tappets utilize high-pressure oil to keep the lifter continuously in contact with its cam and valve lifter body. Plungers in the hydraulic tappets are chrome-plated for greater resist' ance to wear and corrosion. Crankcase emission red uction system re'cycles blow-by gases tothe induction system for return to the combustion chambers for burning. Comet "6" Carburetors-The single-venturi carburetors for the 170- and 2OO-cu.-in. Comet "6" engines are tailored to fuel requirements of the two engines. New features for 1964 include a new choke body with larger air volume, and improved fuel discharge nozzle and well tube for better constant-speed driving feel, and improved float bowl venting for hot idle stability. All Comet engines are built with piecisioncast alloy-iron cylinder blocks, cylinder heads, and intake and exhaust manifolds. An outstanding advantage of alloy iron is its versatility. After casting, it is easy to machine 0r process, yet can stand high temperatures. lt has good expansion and contraction qualities which make it ideal for cylinder walls and cylinder heads. Another advantage: Free graphite in the alloy-iron makes it ideal for cylinder walls and valve guides. Free graphite affords natural lubrication... also soaks up and retains oil to provide minute pockets of oil on the surface. Carburetor Dual Air lntakes The Comet V-8's are well ,,over-square" with large-diameter pistons traveling short strokes. The short strokes mean lower friction and less piston travel per car mile. Made compact through careful design and use of precision-cast parts, the Comet V-S's measure only 20 inches over the manifolds. The generator, power steering hydraulic pump and air conditioner compressor are mounted close to the cylinder block to conserve space. Cylinder block-Alloy-iron 90' V-8 cylinder block is precision-cast with walls of uniform thickness. A shallow casting, the crankcase extends approxi mately to cra n kshaft centerli ne. Grankshaft-Made of nodular iron and precision-cast for high strength with minimum weight, the crankshaft is a 5-main-bearing design. Crankshaft has 6 integral counterweights plus an external counterweight at each end. Vibration damper is installed on the front end of the crankshaft. This rubber-floated torsional vibration damper with a rubber ring between the inner and outer steel rings, serves to counteract crankshaft vibrations for smoother, quieter drive line performance. Pistons-Slipper-type 3-ring design precisionmachined, aluminum alloy castings, with imbedded steel struts for autothermic expansion control. Tin plating prevents scuffing of pistons and cylinder walls during break-in. The top compression ring is chrome-plated and the 2nd compression ring is phosphate-coated. The lower oil ring has dual chrome-plated rails and a steel expander spring. Cylinder heads and exhaust manifolds are made with the same precision-casting techniques as the cylinder block. Precision casting prouides large intake and exhaust passages for Comet engines. Illustrated, is Comet V-8 cylinder head with wedge-shape combustion chambers and alternate anangement of intake and exhaust ualues. Comet V-8 engine performance and efficiency are improved with selective heating of incoming air for carburetor. The heating system includes a jacket surrounding the right.side exhaust manifold, high- and low-level air intakes, and a temperature-controlled valve. For warm-up the upper intake is closed. Air enters through the lower intake, and picks up heat as it passes around the exhaust manifold enroute to the carburetor air filter. After warm-up the lower intake is closed and all air goes directly through the upper intake to the carburetor air filter. The temperature-controlled valve automatically selects heated, mixed or unheated air. Heating the incoming air during warm-up reduces the hazard and annoyance of stalls caused by carburetor icing. Additional heating of fuel-air mixture is provided in the intake manifold. Exhaust gas pulsing through a passage between the cylinder banks warms the intake manifold directly below the carburetor. lntake manifold-Made of alloy-iron precision cast by shell-molding process, the intake mani. fold has equal length over-and-under intake passages. This mounting eliminates the usual rocker arm shaft and retainers to obtain a reduction in reciprocating friction and inertia forces for improved engine efficiency. Hydraulic valve lifters are actuated by the highlift cams on the precision-cast nodular iron camshaft. The hydraulic tappets utilize highpressure oil from the engine lubrication system to keep each lifter continuously in contact with its cam and valve-lifter body. This permits a lower driveshaft and smaller hump in the passenger compartment. Features and customer benefits: The rear axle is semifloating type. The pinion gear is straddle-mounted with two roller-bearing bushings in front of the pinion and one behind. The straddle-mounting maintains more accurate ring-gear tooth alignment for smoother, quieter operation wheel is on solid surface and the other on slippery surface, both wheels turn. With conventional rear axles, the wheel on solid surface would stand still while the wheel on slippery surface would spin.
