Spring Tech Session
Hosted by Bob Martin
There was quite a turnout for this years Spring Tech Session. Bob’s
driveway was the setting for an international bike show. There were
Nortons, KTMs, BMWs, one with a sidecar, Harleys, a Triumph, a BSA and
a Ural complete with a sidecar. Bob, of course, prepared his famous chili so we were all fed
and happy. There was the usual visiting and the swapping of stories. Several members brought
their Norton projects to work on. John Kinlin was replacing his isolastics with vernier-
adjustable MK3-type without completely disassembling his motorcycle. Mike Homs was tinkering with his carbs. David Sheesley was having issues with his bike starting and not running
smoothly. I think there were some other projects going on as well. Of course there was
“plenty of reasonably competent (and, to keep you on your toes, some expert and some lamebrained) advice, a wide selection of appropriate tools, and adequate muscle power for anything
you can do to a Norton.” (Eric)

The Parts Depot
I know many of you are curious about the status of the Norton Parts Cache.
The parts, as some of you may have guessed, were in the possession of Gary Bolduc,
our former President who moved to the Cortez area and worked for Matt Rambow at
CNW for a number of years. One of Gary’s responsibilities at CNW was dealing with
take-offs from bikes coming in for various levels of upgrade. When he left CNW many
of those parts went with him. The cache he wanted to sell also included parts he collected on his own over the years. He estimates 4000-5000 lbs. of parts. The Parts Depot is going to be located, for the time being, behind Randy Albright’s shop in Golden:

The easiest way to get there is from Hwy 58, McIntyre Road
exit, go north and take the first right hand turn onto Arapahoe
St, go 2 blocks and it’s on the SW corner of Arapahoe and
Kilmer. Or you can come in on West 44th Ave and turn south
on Kilmer two blocks east of McIntyre.
Any club member is welcome to come by and take a look during normal working hours or by appointment. Randy is usually there
on Saturday mornings. There are few if any major components such as engines, gearboxes, and frames and steel gas tanks, but
almost every other component of a Norton Commando seems to be represented.
We are still working on plans for “permanent” storage
of the parts cache. We have permission to use space
behind Randy’s shop, which is behind a tall fence and
reasonably secure, but the actual container has not
been acquired yet. We are considering things like a 20foot shipping container, the box off a retiring box truck,
converted travel trailer, Tuff-Shed, etc. There is a possibility of storing some things inside at Randy’s shop too.
If you have a lead on a suitable structure or container
that can be had cheaply, please get in touch. Donations
of sturdy crates and storage bins are welcome.
Part of the deal with storing this stuff at AMC is that
Randy needs to clean out a considerable amount of
junk that is currently out back in the area we will use.
This is mostly of a metallic nature and a lot of it is really
large and heavy. We can’t help with that much, but
then there will be a lot of smaller stuff that needs to be
pitched into a roll-off or dumpster, and for this stage I
will probably broadcast a request for a work party to
help with this.

We had a good crew of helpers for the transfer of the Norton parts from Gary Bolduc’s trailer into a
20-foot container that we will be able to use at least temporarily.

Randy Albright is the real hero, having called in some favors with one of his neighbors to secure the use of this
container for free. For the time being, the container will only be available during weekday business hours, because of
where it is parked, but we will try to correct that as soon as possible to provide weekend access. If you want to
inspect the cache or do some shopping, contact the Parts Depot Despot, Bob Ohman at (303) 570-9333
While there are many good parts to be found in the Depot’s boxes, these are probably not in the collection.
You are, however, welcome to dig through the boxes and look for other hidden treasures.

James Lafler invites us up north for a ride
I had a solo Commando ride today and stopped at the historic Bingham Hill Cemetery
which is in between Ft. Collins and Laporte CO. It is quite the graveyard where here rest
some of the earliest settlers (including native indigenous people) and French trappers of
the area. Next time club riders are around up my way I would be happy to take them
there. Glad I rode today for it's supposed to be crappy out the next few days.

I remember thinking rather irreverently that my
suit's in better condition than the Prime Minister's,
but this is a very special occasion for me. I had
taken my best suit to London to create the right
impression. This was at a time when I thought
Members of Parliament were a superior form of
homo sapiens.
Mr. Churchill stares at me, looks down, and says
in that slow, commanding, slightly lisping voice
that thrilled and inspired millions throughout the
war, "My boy, there is no harm in leaving open
the door of the cage when the bird is dead."

Old Bike Ride 14 Sunday, May 15, 2016
Open to all riders of (sufficiently) old motorcycles and all old motorcycle riders
Welcome to Old Bike Ride Fourteen!
This annual event is a venture between Norton Colorado and Bob Ohman. The purpose of the Old Bike Ride is to encourage people
to bring out their old motorcycles and ride them. American, British, Italian, German, Russian, Chinese, motorcycle, scooter, sidecar,
concourse original or hideous mongrel, any engine capacity, we do not care as long as it's old enough. The approximately 110-mile
route takes us over some of the finest motorcycling roads of the Front Range. The Old Bike Ride is open to anyone riding a motorized vehicle with less than four wheels made in 1980 or earlier. We also honor people who refuse to quit riding just because they
got old, so a rider over the age of 75 can ride whatever they want to, dammit.
Except for this Extremely Important Exception:
We are trying to encourage more riders of the female persuasion to get involved in vintage motorcycling. Therefore, for OBR13 and
until further notice, women of any age are welcome to participate while riding (not as a passenger) a motorcycle or scooter of any
age. Ladies, here's your chance to ride with a choice collection of the crustiest old motorcyclists you could ever imagine! This is not a
race. Everyone rides at their own pace and, to quote the old song, "never is heard, a discouraging word" about the mechanical
preparation of one's machine or one's rate of forward progress, cornering abilities, or navigational skills (no one could be worse
than Jerry Pokorny). We'd really, truly like you to join us.
As in recent runnings of the Old Bike Ride, the special decals commemorating this event will not be issued until the lunch stop.
Location and Start Time
The ride will start from the same location in downtown Golden as last year: the large parking lot behind the old Foss Drugstore, one
block west of Washington Ave on 13th Street. Maps will be distributed to qualifying riders starting at 8:00 AM. Rider's Meeting at
9:15. The ride will start at 9:30 promptly.
Breakfast, Lunch, and Beer
There are multiple coffee/dining establishments within one block of the parking lot, all of which will be open by 7:30 at the latest
on Sunday:
Cafe 13, a coffee/pastry shop facing the parking lot at 1301 Arapahoe St.
The Table Mountain Grill & Cantina, full-service restaurant around the corner at 1310 Washington St.
Higher Grounds, at the corner of Washington St and 14th St, the best coffee shop in the area, a short block away but worth the
walk.
The Golden Diner, a couple blocks away at 700 12th St., but the best breakfast joint in town.
What a surprise, a Starbucks!, at the intersection of Washington and 13th.
The ride may or may not use the same route as OBR13, over Squaw Pass and up the Peak-to-Peak Highway to Nederland for lunch.
We are still thinking about that. In any case there will be several dining options so that you can select the establishment that best
meets your fiscal and dietary needs. The ride will probably end at one of the brewpubs in Golden. You're responsible for paying for
your own food and drink. We expect to arrive back in Golden around 2 PM.

Heritage Square will be at the Colorado National Speedway this year. The
date will remain the same Sunday,
June 5, 2016. There will be a $5 charge
per bike to enter the show. This is only
to cover the Speedway expenses plus
we will be allowed to take parade laps
around the Race Track. Free admission

Club Events
Membership in Norton Colorado is open to
anyone, regardless of whether they own a
Norton, or any motorcycle whatsoever.
Many events have been scheduled for
the 2016 season, usually about 2 per
month. Participation in these events will
be counted for the President's Award.
Events may be added, dropped, or rescheduled through the year. The schedule can be found in this newsletter or
check the schedule on the club website:
Dues are $20/ year individual, $22 for a
couple or family unit, payable to "Norton
Colorado" and sent to the Treasurer,
