The Walker Scottish Rite Clinic for Childhood Language Disorders KidTalk The Walker Scottish Rite Clinic 3632 Olive St. St. Louis, MO 63108 (314) 533-7415 (800) 358-5656 State of the Union At the Walker Scottish Rite Clinic, this phrase holds no partisan content but rather the evolution of the Clinic’s “Union” with Maryville University. In 2010 and with the impactful gift from Myrtle and Earl Walker and the leadership of both the Clinic Board and the University, the Walker Scottish Rite Clinic began the journey of transition to Walker Hall, the future home of the School of Health Professions at Maryville. “We anticipate beginning construction of Walker Hall in Su mmer 2013 and completion in Su mmer 2014. Walker Hall will have a profound impact on the School of Health Professions with increased student enrollment opportunities, the addition of the Speech-Language Pathology graduate progra m and the inclusion of the Clinic on ca mpus.” — Dr. Mark Lombardi, Maryville University President Fall 2012 Newsletter Upon completion of Walker Hall, the Clinic will integrate into the University and offer clinical services on campus, as well as existing locations. However, in this interim period, the Clinic is still an independent 501(c)(3) organization. “The combination of education and on-site therapy will only enhance the quality and the performance of our mission once the ‘Union’ is completed.” — Ed Kellogg, Clinic Chairman During this “pre-union” period, the University is raising capital and making preparations for Walker Hall. Also during this period, the Clinic Board and Staff are looking at all internal systems to ensure best program outcomes and mission advancement, both now and upon the transition to Maryville. Clinic Hires New Speech-Language Pathologist The Clinic continues its commitment to providing speech and language services by hiring a new parttime speech-language pathologist. Ali Manahan, MS, CCC-SLP started in July. Ali is from Quincy, Illinois li A , t and attended s i p a er Saint Louis UniNew th versity for her undergraduate and graduate career. Ali’s background experiences include working with children in preschool and elementary school in the city of St. Louis. In addition to working at the Clinic, she also sees clients through Missouri First Steps, Missouri’s early intervention program. Ali enjoys working with children of all ages but especially enjoys working with late talkers and training parents on how to integrate speech and language into their every day routines. Ali is co-supervisor of the KidTalk Prep Language Group program and supervises the graduate students from Saint Louis University and Fontbonne and the Music Therapy students from Maryville University that participate in group each semester. Ali participated in the KidTalk Prep Language Group program while she was a graduate student at Saint Louis University. Beth McCarthy, MS, CCC-SLP, was the supervisor over group since 2004 and in the summer of 2011, Carrie Barry, MS, CCC-SLP, became cosupervisor with Beth. Ali has joined Carrie as cosupervisor in Beth’s place. Please join us in welcoming Ali to the Clinic’s team. In addition, a salute to Beth for a job well done. w w w. s r c l i n i c . o r g 2 What’s New at the Clinic From the Director’s Desk Brooks, Avery, Logan, Isaiah and Olivia - some of the Clinic friends you’ll learn more about in this issue. Santucci, Ph.D., CCCA Communication has many applications that are instrumental to effectively share your story with others. While the Clinic’s program communication goals come as therapy to the children, we also strive to communicate our mission strategies to you. Earlier this year, the Board moved forward to officially trademark the “kids” logo which has been in use since 1993 as part of the Clinic’s visual identity. We also now proudly bear the St. Louis BBB’s Wise Giving Alliance Seal for standards of excel- lence in our community. These tools help us to communicate with you on our ongoing intent to provide care and sustain the program that serves children at risk. Communication binds us so that together we can achieve greater purposes. On behalf of Brooks, Avery, Logan, Isaiah, Olivia and the hundreds of children served every year at the Walker Scottish Rite Clinic, thank you for helping us share the dream of effective communication to our children. In partnership for kids, Sheri K. Mistretta Clinic Child Receives Scottish Rite Foundation Scholarship The Scottish Rite Foundation’s Benevolence Program just made a little Kindergarten friend for life! The Program recently awarded a scholarship to help underwrite a vital piece of in-class auditory amplification equipment for incoming Kindergartener, Logan. Without help from the Foundation, this equipment could have been cost-prohibitive for Logan’s family and not been able to address his need to accurately hear and participate in the classroom. Logan, now six, has been in speech-language therapy at the Clinic since he was Jaina & Loga n four years old and has a history of otologic concerns and subsequent speech/language difficulties. When Logan started at the Clinic, he was eager to communicate and said many words but his words were not clear. Also he got “stuck” on continues on page 9 The Clinic is on Facebook & Pinterest The Clinic has entered the realm of the social media world via Facebook and Pinterest. Both sites are a great way to connect with supporters and create awareness about the Clinic and the mission. The Clinic can increase its presence through these social media outlets by uploading pictures, videos, event flyers, invitations and much more. Ali, the newest member of the therapy team, has done a great job of posting therapy tools on Facebook along with other useful resources for parents. In addition, Beth, Kate and Ali are also pinning therapy resources for parents on Pinterest, a virtual interactive bulletin board. The Clinic is using Pinterest to pin resources and activities that are speech and language related. By pinning these useful ideas it gives parents creative tools they can use to work with their kids at home. Take a moment to Like the Clinic on Facebook and Follow the Clinic on Pinterest. Follow us on pinterest https://pinterest.com/nsrc Meet a Clinic Child Olivia! Olivia started her journey at the Clinic when she was just two and half years old. At the time, Olivia was only saying around 10 words and primarily communicated through pointing and gesturing. Upon starting at the Clinic, y p a Olivia participatr e in th Olivia ed in the KidTalk Prep Group therapy program for 12 weeks. Initially, Olivia was reluctant to participate in the group activities and did not interact much with her peers. As the group sessions progressed, Olivia seemed to benefit greatly from the group setting and peer interaction. As Olivia’s participation and interaction in the group increased, so did her language and vocabulary. The once “shy” and “quiet” Olivia started initiating turns during activities by saying “my turn” and began to use single words to communicate. Olivia’s family was also noticing an increase in her communication skills at home. By the end of the 12 week session, Olivia was using one to two word utterances to communicate and exhibited an increased confidence in communicating with family and peers. 3 by Beth McCarthy, MS, CCC-SLP After completing the KidTalk Prep program, I started seeing Olivia in individual therapy. We continued working on increasing her expressive language skills, building her vocabulary and lengthening her sentences. Olivia was now speaking in sentences to communicate, but she was very difficult to understand. Therapy shifted focus from working on Olivia’s language skills (now age-appropriate) to working on speech sounds. Olivia has worked on several different speech patterns to help increase her speech intelligibility. Olivia is now four and a half and progressing well with her speech. Olivia is a hard working, energetic and happy little girl that can brighten anyone’s day. It has been such a pleasure to work with Olivia and watch her progress from a shy and quiet little two year old to a four year old girl who tells me stories and loves to laugh and giggle during our therapy sessions! Clinic Therapists Attend RiteCare Conference By Jacob Gutshall, MHS, CCC-SLP Clinic Staff Strategic Workshop The Clinic staff met on Thursday, August 23 for a strategic meeting at Maryville University’s South County campus. The day long workshop included an intense agenda detailing the Clinic’s initiatives for the coming year, including therapeutic needs and development goals. It was a great day and the entire team (with the exception of Brandy who is out on maternity leave) was in attendance. Way to go team! Carrie Barry, MS, CCC-SLP and I attended the 2012 RiteCare Conference which was hosted by the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children September 14-15. Over the course of two days, Carrie and I attended eight continuing education classes each. Courses covered topics on assessing children’s story telling, dyslexia, behavior management, vocabulary development in preschoolers and much more. Courses such as these help keep therapist’s skills up to date and are a requirement to maintain state licensure as well as certification from ASHA. The RiteCare conference, held every two years, is also a gathering of leaders, other therapists, and Scottish Rite Masons from the over 140 RiteCare clinics across the nation. Carrie and I were able to get to know leaders and therapists from right here in Missouri, as well. We met and spoke with Bob Cockerham, SGIG and John Woodard, Chairman of the Scottish Rite Foundation of Missouri as well as therapists from Missouri RiteCare clinic’s in Kansas City, Warrensburg, Columbia, and Kirksville. Carrie Barry reported, “It was nice to compare programs and share ideas with the other RiteCare clinics.“ We appreciated the opportunity to attend such a great conference. Carrie and I learned a lot, shared ideas, and met some great colleagues. To schedule a screening for a child, call Sharon at 314.533.7415 4The Hadens! Meet a Clinic Family by Kate Bockhold, M.S., CCC-SLP Twins Brooks and Avery Haden have been part of the Clinic family for almost three years. We met them in January of 2009, when their mother Ashley Haden, brought them in for a speech and language screening. While collecting background information, we learned that Avery and Brooks were born at just 24 weeks gestation; Avery weighed one pound, three ounces and spent three months in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and Brooks weighed one pound, two ounces and spent four and half months in the NICU. They each received oxygen on and off during their time in the hospital. Once they were released from the hospital, they immediately began receiving Occupational Therapy (OT) and Physical Therapy (PT) through First Steps, Missouri’s Early Intervention program. Avery began speech therapy at approximately nine months of age due to feeding difficulties and Brooks began speech therapy around one year of age. Because they were nearing their third birthdays, Mrs. Haden was looking for the next place to send the twins, since First Steps only offers therapy services until children are three years old. After screening Brooks and Avery, we were surprised how great their language skills were! The main concern was regarding their production of speech sounds. They were placed on the waiting list and were evaluated in November of 2009. Avery did not need therapy at that time; her speech errors were appropriate for her age. Brooks, however, did need speech sound work and immediately began therapy. Brooks is talkative and energetic and has been entertaining to have in therapy. Avery began therapy in March of 2012 to work on some of her speech sounds. She is inquisitive and talkative and also a joy to have as a client. Together, Brooks and Avery are quite a pair! All of the therapists and staff enjoy chatting with the twins and listening to their hilarious stories while in the waiting room. Come and meet Brooks, Avery and Mr. and Mrs. Haden at the annual KidTalk Celebration on November 3, 2012 at The Purser Center at Logan College. Mr. and Mrs. Haden will be speaking at the auction and sharing their experiences with the Clinic. “Puttin’ on the Ritz” Bro oks & y r e Av KidTalk Celebration Saturday, November 3 at the Purser Center at Logan College Envelope yourself in an evening of glitz and glamour at the annual KidTalk Celebration dinner and auction at the stunning Purser Center at Logan College of Chiropractic on Saturday, November 3. When people didn’t understand him Logan talked less and “gave up” in conversations. With therapy, Logan now speaks more clearly and confidently. He repeats words that are unclear, engages in conversation, asks questions and makes requests. Logan’s parents, Jaina and Paul noted, “we are so appreciative of the Scottish Rite Foundation scholarship which supported the cost of the amplification system for Logan’s Kindergarten Class. This equipment has enabled Logan’s hearing experience to be clear and effective.” This equipment will travel with Logan from grade to grade as he begins his elementary school journey. Thanks to the benevolence of the Scottish Rite Foundation, Logan’s school story will have a happy ending!
