RADIO AGE ~~~~~~~···~ Vol. 16, No. 5 May 1990 $1.50 MERCURY SUPER 10 The Story of Mercury 10 By Don Patterson Mercury by Giovanni Bologna of Italy 1 RADIO AGE Many thousands of years ago, before man became the inventive genius that he is today, there lived, according to mythology, a Grecian God named Mercury. To the ancient Greeks, Mercury was the god chosen to preside over all sports, matters of state, commerce, art and fine music. Today we picture Mercury only as a messenger-as a man of speed, with wings on his head and feet. But to the ancients, mercury was a man of culture and refinement, a lover music, who was said to have invented a type of harp, known as the Lyre. (continued on page 2) (continued from page 1) The culture, charm and diplomacy of Mercury, and his ability to cover great distances with such re markable speed, made him the valuable assistant of the god of gods, Jupiter. When the gods were to be summoned toge ther, it was Mercury who was sent to call them in. At times of banqu e t, mercury furnished the music and entertainm e nt. By reason of his tact and diplomacy it was mercury who was sent to pacify the gods when th e re was troubl e be twee n th em. With the aid of his music h e is said to have won many favors from th e differe nt d ei ti es. It is from mercury th at th e MERCURY SUPER TEN d e ri ves its name. As yo u read on, you will see how this radio receiving set, like the god Mercury, is able to cover distance in a flash, bringing to its ow ne r, mu sic, en te rtainment, and that feeling of satisfaction de ri ved from knowing that he ha s th e best. The first 10 peanut tube Superheterodyne was built in th e laboratories of th e H.M. Kipp Co., Ltd . in June 1924 . It was built as the outcome of a long series of experiments ex te nding back several years, and h aving as its object the development of a Radio Receiver of the hi ghest quality, es pecially suited to th e p ec uliar needs of th e Canadian people. It is something more than m ere "a dve rtising talk " to say that Canadian broadcas t li s ten e rs need a receive r that is somewhat diffe re nt from that which would be sufficient for th e need s of a citizen living, for exa mpl e, in th e United States of America. Certain atmospheric and te rres trial conditions obtai n in su ch countries as Canada, South American a nd Australia, which impose obligations on a radio receiver that very few of even the bes t American types of sets can mee t satisfactorily. The effec ts on radio waves of mineral d eposits, forest areas with sharp differences in climatic conditions, and the peculiar antics of the earth's ma gn e ti c field (whose of greatest inte nsity is the North Magnetic Pole loca ted in northern Canada) all have a bea ring on radi o res ults. Let us, however, take tim e to consider one simple case-th e distribution of populati on . There we re about 60 Canadian broadcast ing stations se rving a population rou g hly esti mated at 9 millions of p eople, scattered far and wide over a country whose boundari es a re sepa rated by thou sands of mil es. This mean t that a Canadian liste ner who wa nted program variety ha d to reach ou t fart h e r for his e nte rtainme nt. In th e United States with its 700 s tatio ns a liste ne r was n eve r ve ry far from several powerful s ta ti ons, but in Canada-well , th e re were numero us MERCURY SUPER TEN receivers p erfo rmin g superbly in th e cozy homes o f Canadians who are located over 2 RADIO AGE MOOS'- ,.A,. The MERCURY SUPER TEN (fig . 1) mad e it app ea rance durin g th e Fa ll season of 1925 and it employed th e s up erh eterodyn ci rcuit for se lectivity and sensitivity. It received its signa ls on either the Mod el "A" or Model "C" loop at $20 and $12 respective ly (fig. 2 & fig. 3). After conversion, th e signa l was a mplifi ed by four stages of intermediate amp lifi ca ti on at 192.5 kHz. To accomplish these tasks, the o rth ern Electric Pea nut tube was chosen because of th eir cost, life span a nd avai labili ty in Canada (fig. 4) . The fil a ments of th ese tu bes are connected in se ri es so as to draw only 1 /2 ampere and only 15 milliamperes of "B" batte ry w re required to ope ra te the se t at full powe r. The tun e r and osci ll ator coils are fitted wi th banana plugs and came in four pairs covering the frequencies 9 to 22 mete rs, 22 to 32 me ters, 32 to 80 m e te rs and 80 to 190 me ters (fig . 5) . Cabinetry was quite compac t due to the components. According to lite rature avai lab le, th ey came in a Deluxe cabinet, Model "D" cabinet and a Desk Console. It was also sold in kit form(fig 6, 7, 8). In addition to the above, the H .M. Kipp Co. Ltd. sold a Speaker Deluxe with Exponented Type Model R ho rn a t $95 (fig . 9) and Mercury Desk Console Model Sat $45 (fig. 10). The Smithsonian had a display of early television sets from May to October. On my way up to the A WA meet, I decided to stop in Washington and photograph the display. Among the items, there was the restored plexiglass TRK12 shown at the 1939 World's Fair. In addition, there was "Felix" the cat used in scanning disc television transmission. In the background, there were a multitude of pre-1940 and post-war televisions including a Stromberg Carlson mirror in the lid and Pilot 3 inch TVs. This set uses the Western Electric type 215-A tube in all ten sockets. The 215-A is the original "peanut tube", tiny even compared to the 199 used at the time by RCA . This tube is remarkably economical of battery power so even a complement of tubes was viable. In the set, two filament series strings are powered by a storage battery which supplies 1/2 ampere (fig. 1). Ten of these tubes drained the A battery at the same rate as a 2 tube set using 01A's, such as the Crosley 51. The WE-215A was manufactured in Canada by northern Electric and was th erefore available to the Toronto firm. The 215-A was not intended as a "power tube" but two driven push-pull provide a lot of volume with the magnetic speaker. Two tubes in pushpull can provide more than twice the output of one as they can be driven harder without generating even harmonics distortion. To get this power a 9 volt "C" battery is required and the audio. stages operate at 135 volts. The osc., mixer, l.F. amplifiers (4 of them), second detector operate on 67.5 volts. A serious design defect is in the loud-soft switch circuit. When in the soft position, a 50,000 ohm resistor shunts the secondary of an audio interstage transformer (fig. 2), but the switch connects this resistor effectively across the 9 volt "C" battery, considerably shortening its life. If the "C" battery is weak, sound is distorted, B battery life decreases and the audio tubes age prematurely. The schematic I obtained with my Mercury Super-Ten doesn ' t show either of the two 1.0 uFd paper bypass condensers but the set has them and I'm sure it couldn 't be stable without them, considering the number of IF stages . I've shown them in fig. 3. When my set arrived from British Columbia , all 10 tubes were present and "GOOD". More remarkable, all three audio transformers were OK, but the two paper bypass condensers tested leaky. A good paper condenser has no leakage current even with 135 volts. I removed the condenser innards, replaced them with 1 uFd 250 volt capacitors from Radio Shack 272-1055. These fit inside the metal box so look original. But the radio wouldn't play when powered up. By listening to a nearby AM set near the workbench, tuned to a weak station mid-band, I found by tuning the oscillator that the oscillator was operating, but that wasn't the only thing oscillating. The problem was traced to corrosion of the nuts which, not having any lock washers, were 5 RADIO AGE now making poor connections between the bypass condensers and the receiver circuitry. I was pleased that the trouble was found outside the copper shielded RF/IF part of the receiver as it would have been very hard to disassemble it. Clearly, it was not designed to the taken apart. Only the IF transformers are inside the shielded box (fig. 4). However, another poor connection was found. The plate bypass on the second detector and one lead of the oscillator coil ground to copper box via an iron machine screw and nut and alas, no lock washer. With the copper surface slightly affected by its age and the same for the corner bolt and nut, there was a nice or not so nice feedback from the detector to the mixer via the oscillator so the whole RF/IF system was oscillating, or at least went into oscillation as th e gain was increased to find stations. Once I removed the nuts, cleaned them, and installed lock washers, the speaker sang, the IF was "quiet" now. See below: The magnetic speaker at first was very faint and highly distorted. The trouble was that it was out of alignment, the armature no longer centered between pole pieces. There is no adjustment screw so I bent the armature where it drives th e metal diaphragm. Sure enough, the volume increased a hundred fold from barely audible in a quite room to loud! First I prodded the armature with a pencil's eraser and found the volume increased, so I knew I had to bend it in the same direction as before. The final restoration task is to replace the rubber insulated, cloth covered battery cable with cable from Olde Tyme Radio Company. The antenna and ground connections and the battery leads all plug-in via an early form of multiple pin connector at rear of chassis. This receiver is very sensitive and selective. When first tried out, with no antenna at all the mixer coil picked up several local stations. As a loop antenna, the mixer coil is only 3" diameter, virtually, but not quite ineffective. Due to the number of self resonant IF tuned circuits, the tone is poor as higher audio frequencies do not reach the detector, but in a very sensitive receiver, limiting frequency response improves signal-tonoise ratio. Another impressive superhet by this firm was offered 1930-1931. It used 2 volt screen grid tubes, type 232 as mixer and in 4 stages of IF amplification. I've never seen one of these and am anxious to add several screen grid superhets to my collection of vintage radios of North America. l ~If .jUl)t{ r--/\ + + 2't r I I jTAurl10 1'or{- Pu/I AoJ10 Ose. New ton It was with interest that I read the article on the A53C audio transformer in the April 1990 issue. My conclusion for its use in any audio system that will sound well is exactly the opposite of that of the April article. The tip-off was when I had constructed the audio portion of one of Hugo Gernsbach's 1920's circuits and fed the output u sing a step down transformer into a modern day eight ohm twelve inch speaker . See the schematic with the black dot. The low notes were comple tely missing and it had a "tinny" sound similar to an old non-electric 78 rpm playe r . Using an audio signal g enerator and an AC voltmeter, the chart I made confirmed what I had heard with my ears: the curve was very bell shaped. The measurement was not made on an open secondary. Suspecting the lack of iron mass in the transformers, I rebuilt the circuit (as shown at X) using capacitance coupling. The improvement in sound was amazing! I could now hear all the low notes, the "tinniness" disappeared, and the high notes were there. The drop in volume was slight. Next I tried capacitance coupling with impedance power using one side of the A53C, (as shown in circuit with circle); this curve was similar to the first one and was not satisfactory. My conclusion is that I would use the A53C for shortwave code work only where this type of high and low attenuation is desired. For lis7 RADIO AGE tenable audio, at least for me, I would relegate th e A53C to the spare parts bin. I am now a convert to capacitance coupled circuits, which by the way, were well known in the middle 1920's as having superior tonal range. Daven and their specially made tubes with a gain of about 20 for each tube, were popular. Transformer coupling is, however, more effi cient and can sound just fine if the transformer has enough iron in it, has many fine varnish insulated laminations to reduc e eddy curre nts a nd is designed to suit the circuit . In circuit d esign the extra weight and cost of th e transformer should be considered against an additional tube and battery drain. Voltages in capacitance coupling can in some cases be doubled over th e rated voltage of the tube to make up for inherent lo sses through the resistors involved. The horn speaker itself seems to produce thi s bell shaped curve. Having the horn and lacking the driver I made one using a Radio Shack long throw (half and inch) 2 3 I 4 inch speaker in a tightly coupled wood box with minimum sir space . Sure enough, typical "tinny" sound . Removing the speaker from the horn, both low and high notes came back for a balanced pleasing musical sound even on this small a speaker. So that is my experience. Isn't the world interesting and diverse. (Continued on next page.) 1='°RE=QUE>JCY MEASUREMENT or=. In the 30's Midwest Radios were sold directly from the factory to the customer. The prices advertised usually were for the chassis and loudspeaker only . Although cabinets were offered, many customers bought the chassis and speaker to install in an existing cabinet. The Midwest advertising was very impressive, some 22 tubes, world-wide reception, powerful performance, and a very low price. From this sales pitch many purchasers were disappointed with their sets and brought them to our independent shop for repair and a tuneup. Most of the Midwest sets had fairly good sensitivity when accurately aligned, but the customer would return the set after trying it at home . We were accused of having some kind of a booster that made the sets work better in our shop . Realigning them would restore reasonable performance, but again, they wouldn't perform very well at the customer's home. I initially attributed the problem to the customer's messing with the trimmers and destroying the alignment. This created bad customer relations, so one day I carefully aligned a customer's set and asked to keep it for a few days to check its stability. I really didn't have to keep it, for as I lifted it to move it out of my way, I lifted one corner of the chassis and was able to tune through three local stations. I found some Midwest sets could be tuned from the 16 to the 25 meter band by lifting a chassis corner. The flexible chassis problem was minimized by drilling alignment holes in the chassis supporting shelf and aligning th e set bolted firmly in place. For sets <?Pera ted in the open, the chassis was fastened securely to a chassis size piece of 3/4 inch plywood with alignment holes. Three rubber feet were used und er the plywood because with four, moving the set around on the usual uneven surface would impair the alignment. FOR SALE ADS ARE FREE UP TO 50 WORDS.
