CHRISTMAS TREE CARE TIPS
Once you decide which type of tree you want, you will need to choose
a place for the tree. Be sure to choose a spot away from heat sources,
such as TVs, fireplaces, radiators and air ducts. Place the tree clear of
doors. Measure the height and width of the space you have available.
Freshness
In general, each tree should have a healthy, green appearance without
a large number of dead or browning needles. Needles should appear
fresh and flexible and should not come off in your hand if you gently
stroke a branch.
Needle Shedding
Needle shedding is a natural part of the life-cycle of any conifer. Some
tree varieties tend to shed more quickly than others and shedding will
accelerate if the tree is allowed to dry out. Keep your tree container
topped up with warm plain water every day. Take down the tree before
it dries out.
Cut Christmas Trees
It is essential that cut trees are fresh when purchased. The needles
should not be dull or dried up, the branches should not be brittle and
the outer needles should not fall off if the tree is gently shaken. Make
sure the base of the tree is straight and 6-8 inches long so it will fit
easily into the stand. Keep your tree outside in a cool and shady place,
preferably standing in water, until it is required indoors. Cut about half
an inch off the butt, this opens up the pores of the tree and helps to
keep it in good condition.
Safety
Check all Christmas tree lights for worn electrical cords. Use ULapproved electrical decorations and cords. Unplug tree lights at night.
Recycling
Recycle your tree after Christmas. Many communities will pick up trees
and turn them into chips. You might put the tree in your back yard and
place bread and suet among the branches for the birds.
Root-Balled Christmas Trees
Keep the roots damp until you are ready to pot the tree. When the
sacking is removed, put the tree in moist soil. Root-balled trees should
remain fresh, retain their needles and have a reasonable chance of
survival if planted out after Christmas.
Poinsettias Selection and Care
Choose a plant with dark green foliage down to the soil line, modified
leaves (bracts) should be completely colored and full. Plant should
be 2 ½ times taller than the diameter of the pot. Check for insects
like aphids and white flies. Place it in a sunny spot. Water thoroughly
when soil is dry to the touch and discard excess of water. Keep
daytime temperatures between 60 -70 degrees and at or above 55
degrees at night.

White Spruce – needles ½” to ¾” long; green to bluish-green, short, stiff
needles, good needle retention.
White Pine – soft, blue-green needles, 2” to 5” long in bundles of five;
retains needles throughout the holiday season; very full appearance;
little or no fragrance; fewer allergic reactions than other trees.
White Fir or Concolor Fir – blue-green needles are ½” long; nice shape
and good aroma, a citrus scent; good needle retention. In nature can
live to 350 years.
Virginia Pine – needles are twisted and range from 1.5” to 3” in length.
They are relatively short when compared to those of other pines. Strong
branches enable it to hold heavy ornaments; strong aromatic pine
scent; a popular southern Christmas tree.
Serbian Spruce – fragrant; notable for its compact size; with needles
½” to ¾” long; dark blue-green upper side and blue-white under side.
Originally discovered in the dense forest of Serbia in 1875.
Scotch Pine – stiff branches; stiff, dark green needles 1” long; holds
needles for four weeks; needles will stay on even when dry; keeps
aroma throughout the season.
Red Cedar – branches of the Eastern Red Cedar are compact and form a
pyramidal crown. Leaves are a dark shiny green color and have a good
scent; can dry out quickly; a southern Christmas tree.
Norway Spruce – needles ½” – 1” long and shiny, dark green. Needle
retention is poor without proper care; strong fragrance; nice conical shape.
Fraser Fir – soft, dark green, flattened needles; ½” to 1” long; good
needle retention; nice scent; pyramid-shaped strong branches which
turn upward.
Douglas Fir – good fragrance; blue to dark green; 1” to 1 ½” needles;
soft needles have one of the best aromas among Christmas trees when
crushed. Good needle retention.
Canaan Fir – has many similarities to Fraser firs in growth and
appearance. Soft needles are about 1” long with a nice green color and
pleasant “smell of Christmas.” It is native to the mountains of West Virginia.
Blue Spruce – dark green to powdery blue; very stiff needles, ¾” to 1 ½”
long; good form; will drop needles in a warm room, but is best among
species for needle retention; branches are stiff and will support many
heavy decorations.
