Annual “Dive with the Whale Sharks”
March – June 2010
Venture on a uniquely Belizean experience

Our Vacation Planning Specialists can put you
in contact with a local dive shop to coordinate
an excursion, or assist you in planning a land
tour.

wonderful 4-day celebration that’s held over
Easter weekend. Festivities include boat races,
a calypso competition, pageants, parades, tasty
dishes, and the Big Drum Dance, a show
highlighting the island culture. Consider
experiencing this after Bequia’s Easter
Regatta…it’s a short sail away!

In its 19th year, this Festival has become one
of the most anticipated Caribbean events.
During the celebration, the music-filled streets
groove to a new rhythm with dusky tones of
jazz, sensuous soul, cool calypso and pulsing
world beats from some of the greatest artists
with island flair. Beginning with opening
events, the festival gets into full swing on May
6 featuring a 4-day line-up packed with main
stage performances.
Mexico, La Paz
Cinco de Mayo
May 5, 2010
When May 5th arrives, it’s party time in
Mexico…so, come experience a Mexican
fiesta at its finest! This national holiday is
celebrated with festivals, fireworks and parades
to commemorate Mexico’s defeat of the
French in the 1862 Battle of Puebla. There’s
lots of dancing, games, mariachi music, bull
fights and colorful decorations. Of course,
food is a big part of the festivities, as well as
Mexico’s national beverage, tequila.
In addition, the month of May is also an
excellent time to experience a Sea of Cortez
charter…The weather is beautiful, plus there’s
excellent fishing and unforgettable wildlife
encounters. Ashore, the town of La Paz is
brimming with culture, a striking promenade,
and unique shops.
Whether you seek relaxation, competition, island
parties, tasty cuisine or an ecological adventure,
there’s something for everyone! With warm
weather and sunny skies on the horizon, this
time of the year is perfect for a charter vacation in

he Moorings new
base has become
a destination in

facilities available at the Laru Beya Resort
(swimming pool, restaurant and mini

base, charter guests new or returning to
Belize will find this a great facility.
Guests are greeted with a smile and warm
welcomes. The Moorings team in Belize

of years; about half the staff have been with
The Moorings for more than 4 years, are
supportive of each other and can advise
on all the wonderful adventures awaiting
you in this Caribbean paradise.
Belize is of course renowned for diving,
with the second largest barrier reef in
the world as well as the famous Blue
Hole made popular by Jacques Cousteau.
Since the Blue Hole is outside the barrier
reef, a local skipper is required for the
trip to Lighthouse Reef and Half Moon
Caye, where the diving site is situated.
What also brings people back year after

anchorages and few yachts in Belizean waters.

year is the chance to swim with whale
sharks between mid-March through June,
when these huge fish cruise the outer
reef. Inland tours of the fascinating
Mayan ruins are available and provide an
interesting look at Mayan history and an
opportunity to speculate on what caused
the Mayans to suddenly leave these large
city-states they built in the jungle. Belize
is also recognized for the huge tracts of
land devoted to nature reserves (as are
large portions of the waters of Belize),
so there is ample opportunity to visit the
jungle and maybe the chance of seeing
the black howler
monkeys in their
natural environment,
if not an elusive
jaguar slinking through the shadows.
Kevin and Renee Brown, the base
managers, started with The Moorings in
2002 opening the base in Canouan. Both
veterans of the Navy, they spent 16 years
as live-aboard yachtsmen on a yacht they
built up from hull and decks level, raised
their children on board and explored
South Africa’s waters before coming to
the Caribbean where they sailed around
Venezuela and the eastern Caribbean.
After Canouan, they relocated to Belize
in 2004 to manage the base. Their love of
sailing and dedication to The Moorings
is evident in the way the facilities and
yachts are maintained and in the care each
charterer receives.

Great Blue Hole, Belize
Continued from Cover
Jim and Cathy are avid
sailors, having owned a
number of boats, including
a Catalina 42, which they
sailed and raced out of San
Diego, California, not far
from their home in La Jolla.
The Tahitian Leewards, so
named because they lie to
leeward of fabled Tahiti,
drew them both back because of the incredible beauty of the main islands in the group: Raiatea,
Tahaa, Bora-Bora, and Huahine. The warm and friendly people were always welcoming. “You’re
sailing in the protected waters of the lagoons,” Jim says,“and you’ve got open ocean between the
islands, which makes for great sailing. It’s one of our favorite places on earth.”
Fine restaurants, snorkeling on the reefs, and exploring picturesque villages added to the appeal
of sailing in the Tahitian Leewards. Puffy white clouds capped verdant mountains, warm trade
winds blew steadily, and the stars twinkled brightly above secluded anchorages. One of Jim’s
most vivid memories was coming upon a small church during Sunday services, and listening to
the people singing hymns a cappella. “It was beautiful,” he says, “just beautiful.”
Jim’s adventures with The Moorings began in a most unusual place, over beers at T.G.I. Friday’s
with his friends Larry Kull and Clyde Richards. It was 1983 and they’d just finished playing a
game of handball, a physical diversion from their
cerebral work as physicists (Jim was a nuclear
physicist).“We got talking about the movie Four
Seasons, and we thought it would be fun for us
and our girlfriends to go on vacation together,”
Jim says. Released in 1981, Four Seasons is a
romantic comedy about three couples that
vacation together, among other things.
As sailors, it was only natural for Jim and his
friends to book a bareboat charter with The
Moorings. They chose the BVI with its easy
access by air, protected waters, rocking beachside
bars, and gorgeous anchorages. It was an ideal place for a first charter. “That trip changed our
lives,” Jim says. “Ever since we’ve made it a tradition to do Moorings charters together.”
The BVI held a special appeal, luring them back three times. The 25 islands in the group are
relatively close together, making for short, swift passages. There are superb snorkeling venues,
expansive white-sand beaches, more than 20 historic sites, and full-service marinas with all

amenities. The flamingos of low, flat
Anegada, the fanciful natural granite
sculptures of The Baths of Virgin
Gorda, cocktails at Jost Van Dyke’s
Foxy’s, and the beaches of Cane
Garden Bay on Tortola are just some
of the attractions that weave a special
BVI magic for Jim and Cathy.
Jim, now 70 and retired, is planning
to return to the BVI once again on
a family cruise with his wife, their
two daughters, and the grandchildren
in late June. He isn’t chartering a big
monohull this time, but a luxury 47foot Moorings Powercat.
“With this group, we knew we
probably wouldn’t do a lot of sailing,
so a Powercat made a lot of sense. It’s
got a lot of room for the eight of us,”
Jim says. “The BVI is probably the most
varied and interesting place I know of for
kids and grandchildren. There’s lots to do
and we can’t wait to go back!”

Story
Excerpt from Power & Motoryacht.
Article by Capt. Bill Pike, Sr. Editor.

Romance abounds on this BVI adventure
M
y wife BJ seemed
somewhat apprehensive, I must admit.
Among other things,
she was uncharacteristically quiet as we sat
on a bench at the dock, eyeballing the ferry
that would take us from St. Thomas to
Roadtown, Tortola, where The Moorings
bases its British Virgin Islands charter operations and where a virtually new Robertson
& Caine 474 Powercat awaited…
I did some thinking on the ride over.
Certainly the first half of the trip was gonna
be easy. All we had to do was spend a couple
of days on the 474 enjoying the crewedcharter experience, a cushy gig entailing
little more than being waited on hand and
foot by a couple of soon-to-be-married (and
most likely very happy) youngsters: Shaun
Miller, our South African captain, and
Kelsey Van Beever, our Antiguan chef.
The second half was tricky, though. In
order to fully appreciate and write about the
differences between crewed charters and the
do-it-yourself bareboating adventures The
Moorings also purveys, I’d need to cruise
the 474 alone with BJ for an extra couple
of days.
began to glow, Van Beever served up the
cinnamon pancakes we’d selected from the
sample breakfast menus we’d received from
The Moorings weeks before. Thanks to
genuine maple syrup and berries on the side
(topped with mascarpone), breakfast was
lovely and set the tone for the grilled fish,
fresh pasta, nouveau Caribbean desserts (like
Bananas Unflambé), and other delectables
our chef subsequently prepared. “How are
the pancakes?” I asked BJ. “Delicious,” she
replied, adding as Van Beever breezed past,
“and the presentation—excellent!"
“I thought we’d spend the first night
anchored at Great Harbour on Peter Island,
if that’s alright with you two,” said Capt.
Miller, leading the way through the evening
shadows in The Moorings compound. “It’s
not far.”
As we approached Great Harbour’s shallows,
with little more than the moon, our depth
sounder, and Van Beever’s flashlight to guide
us, I was genuinely struck by what I’d say is
the main advantage of a crewed charter:
the presence of trustworthy professionals
onboard who nix the anxieties and
responsibilities even experienced customers
are likely to feel, particularly in unfamiliar
waters. Indeed, before falling asleep that
night, BJ and I heard Capt. Miller on deck
more than once, checking the anchor. It was
a comforting feeling.
Day dawned with spectacular clarity, and as

Leopard 38 and it was immediately obvious that
here was one of the best-executed sub-40-foot
cruising catamarans we have yet seen.”
“The Leopard 38 is a cruising cat optimized

comfortable outdoor space.”
“All in all, the Leopard 38 is a fine entry-level

Kim Baldwin, Albert Hanson and Kester
Douglas review the underwater drop-camera
footage to classify the type of seafloor.
Ms. Baldwin described the Moorings
research cruise as a “complete
success” and said, “The Grenadines
Marine Resource and Space-use
Information System (MarSIS) has been
developed with an aim to allow for
more sustainable development of the
Grenadine marine environment given
its importance to tourism, food security,
poverty alleviation and maintaining
foreign investment inflows. This
inventory of the marine livelihoods and

for the designation of the area as a

exciting destinations
around the world in
a way that has a minimal impact on the
environment. As a leader in the yacht
charter industry with bases located in
environmentally sensitive areas, The
Moorings understands the need to lead
the way in helping to preserve these
pristine destinations for generations
to come. From building projects and
recycling programs that reduce our
carbon footprint, to supporting research
that provides information needed
to move us toward better protection
for marine habitats, The Moorings
continues to make strides in responsible
tourism worldwide.
The new base facilities in Tortola are just
one example, with an environmentally
sound breakwater developed to allow
for greater water circulation into the
harbor. Reports back from Tortola have
been very positive, with recent sightings
of marine life in the harbor!
Other developments include facility and
fleet innovations such as: solar panels for
new Moorings 4600 catamarans, EPAapproved bottom paints, biodegradable
detergents, and water treatment and
recycling processes in Tortola including
a seawater desalination plant that
