We welcome Lucinda Tatman, who will take
over leadership in the Altar Guild this month.

The Rev. Roy D. Green, St. Johns Interim Vicar
Since the 9th century, Christian pilgrims have taken a long
journey to visit the shrine of St James in northwest Spain.
Even now, tens of thousands of pilgrims, hikers, bicyclists
and adventurers make that journey along the way, the
“Camino” – last year there were over 237,000 pilgrims
who made the quest. Why the interest?
There is a majestic cathedral in Santiago de Compostella,
completed in 1211, which tradition holds is the burial
place of St James, the Apostle, and brother of St John. In
Medieval times, when such arduous spiritual journeys were encouraged for penance
or enlightenment, thousands walked from Paris, Rome, Lisbon or Brussels to visit
the shrine and say their prayers. Along with Rome and Jerusalem, Santiago was the
third most important pilgrimage site in Christendom. Pilgrims still make the
journey – you may know the 2010 motion picture The Way, which starred Martin
Sheen and Emilio Estevez, about several unlikely people who found the Camino a
life-altering experience.
The familiar symbol for the pilgrim is the scallop shell, native to that area of coastal
Spain, but the Christian saw in the grooves of the shell, all of which began in a
central point, a representation of the many roads which led to Santiago. Most
carried a shell with them, perhaps on their staff or clothing, as a sign that they were

about holy work, and this offered both protection from thieves and admission to monasteries for room and
board as they traveled. The scallop shell is also the particular symbol for St James, as keys are for St Peter and
the eagle for St John.
Nancy and I will collect our scallop shells in Pamplona, Spain, as we begin the Camino on May 6. We travel in
group with a guide and a teacher, so we can learn as much as possible on our journey. It is pilgrimage for us, a
time for reflection on our spiritual lives.
It will be a time for thought and prayer as we walk the sacred journey of Christians before us, a time to
remember those we serve in St John’s and in Nancy’s Sunriver Christian Fellowship, and a time to honor our
spiritual fathers and mothers. Please hold us in your prayers each day as we walk.

An Introduction from St. John’s Senior Warden
Mary Garrett—Bio
I was born and raised in Ft. Worth Texas and left the area at age 18 to attend college. I received my BA degree from
American University in Washington D.C. with an emphasis in elementary education. Upon graduation I decided to remain in Wash DC where I lived for over 20 years. I eventually returned to Ft. Worth at the age of 40 to be near my elderly parents and other family members. I attended Brite Divinity at TCU from 1993-1995 where I earned a Masters in
Theological Studies. Shortly after seminary I decided to enroll in graduate school at University of Texas Arlington for
Social Work.
After graduating in 1998, I worked as a hospital social worker at the VA in Dallas, Tx. I met my husband Steve during
this time. He worked as the Associate Director of Pharmacy at the Dallas VA. A native Oregonian, Steve was anxious
to return to Oregon and applied for the Chief of Pharmacy position at the VA Domicillary in White City Oregon in
2001. Naturally I tagged along.
I ended my VA career as the Clinical Coordinator for Residential Care which was both challenging and rewarding. I
retired in August 2013 and we moved to Bandon in November 2013. Steve and I visited Bandon many times over the
years that we lived in the Medford area. We knew very quickly that this was the perfect retirement spot for us. Knowing that this community was rich in history and coastal wildlife opportunities, we quickly became involved with local
volunteer work to include the Shoreline Education Awareness group. I had also visited St. John’s over the years and
found the church to be a warm and welcoming place to worship.
I am a “cradle” Episcopalian and St. John’s is by far one of the most embracing congregations I have ever known. I am
proud to be a member of St. Johns and honored to serve as the Senior Warden.
