ow playing is a film that will
leave audiences spellbound.
For the first time, a story is being told about the U.S. Navy SEALs
but instead of actors, real SEALs will
take the lead.
The film tells the story of kidnapped CIA agent Morales (Rosyln
Sanchez) who had been looking into
a terrorist plot aimed at the U.S. First
the SEALs must rescue the CIA agent
before going global to find Shabal (Jason Cottle), the terrorist who could
wound thousands of Americans.
There is only one man who can tell
the platoon where to find Shabal and
that is Christo (Alex Veadov). The
global reach begins as the men of Bandito Platoon balance their families
with doing what is needed to keep everyone safe.

“Act of Valor” is a film that shows
the technology used by the teams,
along with action, adventure and intensity. The film allows audiences to
see the skills that come with being a
member of a SEAL team.
The script, written by Kurt Johnstad who also wrote the script for the
film “300,” was done so to reflect the
true training, planning and operations
conducted by SEALs. These men are
considered the elite who are ready for
land, sea and air mission as a mobile
team.
Directors Scott Waugh and Mike
“Mouse” McCoy spent months getting
to know this community of elite here
in San Diego which is the site of the
U.S. Naval Special Warfare Command.
Director Waugh admits to having
preconceived notions about these men
but those notions were quickly turned
around. Through their contact with
the men and their families, the codirectors learned of the sacrifice and
deep emotion that runs through these
family men.
Because of this connection, these
co-directors were able to put together
a diverse and complete team that truly
reflects the SEALs.
Having the SEALs be the advisors
came to be an invaluable source for
making “Act of Valor.” Director Mike
“Mouse” McCoy says they men were
often given free reign to keep the film
real and authentic. Given dialogue,
the men were able to tell the writer
and directors what would work and
what would not. To keep the film as realistic as possible, the directors used
twelve cameras at a time working in-
the nuclear threat

“Act of Valor” was also the first
time a U.S. SSGN submarine was made
available for a film shooting. To catch
the shot, the filmmakers were told
when and where a submarine would be

making this film?

veryone in our country knows
that we need tax reform but no
one has come up with a solution.
We need to address tax reforms in a
number of different ways. Tax reform
is a political hot potato and will not be
touched by any politician running for
office. The tax attorneys, accountants,
accounting firms and the IRS will stop
and defeat any political party or politician that tries to change our tax laws.
The system is so unjust to individuals and small businesses; we pay over
80% of all taxes. The cost of benefits
that taxpayers, such as small businessmen, pay will eventually put them out
of business! Why can’t we have a flat
stronger economy than we have. We
can’t continue to let large corporations
and companies borrow (Give) monies
from Social Security and other monetary funds given to them by politicians
in office, today or tomorrow, or next
year! The shame of these corporations
is that after they are given our monies
they then outsource the jobs that rightfully should stay here in the United
States. Companies that outsource jobs
should be taxed so heavily that they
no longer can make more moneys to
fill their coffers at the expense of the
United States. We are a Republic not
a democracy and no matter what your
politics are if you remain complacent

Robert Rosenkrans was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, in 1956 and began collecting World War II military
items in 1967 shortly after moving to southern Arizona
with his parents. Growing up next to an Army post and
having his father as a World War II veteran gave Robert
a passion for military history. Dogs were always part of
the house when he was growing up, so joining the U.S.
Air Force and becoming a Law Enforcement K-9 handler
seemed the thing to do for Robert. He was in the Air Force
form 1979 through 1983.

help. Robert and his father successfully ran the store for 18
years before selling it. Robert then started an online business with his wife, Maria, and has been running it for four

book will inspire other historians to get the collecting fever.

Shipping Pets During PCS Could
Cost
Nearly $4,000 Under New Rule

Many servicemembers flying internationally on official orders could face
steep fare increases for pets beginning this month, when a top military-contracted air carrier changes its baggage policies.
As part of its merger with Continental Airlines, United Airlines has announced that on March 3 it will
drop its current flat rate for pets
that are checked as excess baggage and instead require all
animals to be shipped as cargo.
For those changing duty stations in the Pacific, the change
could mean paying about $1,440
to $3,869 to fly with an animal
back to the U.S., depending on
its size. Currently, United charges $283 for most pets, according
to estimates provided Tuesday
by Continental customer service.

about 20 million dissidents, unable to
defend themselves, were rounded up
and exterminated.
In 1911, Turkey established gun
control. From 1915 to 1917, 1.5 million
Armenians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
Germany established gun control
in 1938 and from 1939 to 1945, a total of 13 million Jews and others who
were unable to defend themselves
were rounded up and exterminated.
China established gun control in
1935. From 1948 to 1952, 20 million
political dissidents, unable to defend
themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
Guatemala established gun control
in 1964. From 1964 to 1981, 100,000
Mayan Indians, unable to defend
Uganda established gun control
in 1970. From 1971 to 1979, 300,000
Christians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
Cambodia established gun control
in 1956. From 1975 to 1977, one million educated people, unable to defend

You won’t see this data on the U.S.
evening news, or hear politicians disseminating this information. Guns in

The next time someone talks in favor of gun control, please remind them
of this history lesson.

2,000 Local Veterans Tony Orlando
are Homeless on
Receives Highest
Any Given Night
DoD Civilian Award
A new report released recently estimates that on any given night there
are between 1,700 to 2,000 veterans in
San Diego County that are either living on the streets or in temporary shelters. This estimate is consistent with
past studies that show there is still significant work to be done to meet the
goal of ending veteran homelessness
by 2015.
The report also compiled information on spending by various federal,
state and local agencies which is directed at homeless veterans. More
than $54 million was spent on veterans that lack a permanent home. The
majority of the expenditures (76%)
were spent on reactive programs, such
as health care, incarceration, mental
health services, and detoxification.
"San Diego is home to one of the
largest veteran populations in the
country," said Erik Bruvold, President of NUSIPR, the policy institute
that did the research. "Our report will
hopefully increase awareness that we
need to do more to find housing for
these heroes and that too many are
falling through the cracks."

Marine and Coast Guard reserves,
along with the Army and Air National
Guard.

tary personnel and their families in
the United States. For 18 years he has
hosted “Tony Orlando’s Yellow Ribbon
Salute to the Veterans” in Branson
on Veteran’s Day – a free show to all
veterans who attend the Branson Veterans Homecoming, America’s largest
Veteran’s Day celebration

President Barack Obama presented
the USO with the National Medal of
Arts – the U.S. government’s highest
arts honor – for sharing the sights and
sounds of home with troops stationed
around the world. The ceremony,
which took place in the East Room
of the White House this afternoon, is
an annual event recognizing exemplary individuals and/or organizations
for their encouragement of the arts
and delivery of inspirations to others
through their achievement, support
and patronage. The USO is the only

DoD Expands Drug
Testing Program
The Defense Department's drugtesting program is expanding to add
screening for two additional prescription medications to the range of legal
and illegal drugs it currently detects. The two drugs added to the screening
program — hydrocodone and benzodiazepines — are nationally among the
most abused prescription drugs. The
DoD announced the new screenings
90 days before they would take effect,
which gives servicemembers a 90-day
warning order. Servicemembers with
prescriptions for the two drugs will
not be subject to disciplinary action
for using them within the dosage and
time prescribed. Any servicemember
addicted to prescription drugs should
seek medical help.

the world was his playing field

T
he pay cabler is making a habit
of serving up football-themed
documentaries just before the
Super Bowl, and this one’s a worthy
successor to last year’s “Lombardi,”
even if the two men couldn’t be more
different.
The filmmakers also have a heightened degree of difficulty this time
around. While Namath’s most notable
pro success was the sport’s most improbable — leading the Jets of the
upstart American Football League to
a dominating victory over the NFL’s
heavily favored Baltimore Colts in
Super Bowl III, and thereby establishing the new title game’s validity — his
more recent fall from grace (a pass
of an entirely different sort aimed at
ESPN sideline reporter Suzy Kolber in
2003) is painfully fresher in the minds
of many.
The documentary traces the wellknown aspects of Namath’s life, and
brightens them with clips and quotes:
A three-sport athlete in high school at
Beaver Falls, Pa., he turned down a
$50,000 contract with baseball’s Chi-
cago Cubs because his family wanted
him to go to college. He wound up with
Bear Bryant at Alabama U. — where
he was a moving witness to the entry
of the first black students to the school
— because his hard-partying ways had
depressed his college board scores.
Clips reveal a swivel-hipped, blazing-fast Namath as he tears through
Oklahoma in the 1963 Orange Bowl
(“he was like trying to tackle the
wind,” a teammate recalls), a year and
a half before he rips knee ligaments
in his senior year in a game against
North Carolina.
Some of the pro highlights, culled
from the archives of co-producer
NFL Films, show that Don Maynard’s
game-changing catch in the 1968 AFL
championship game might not have
stood up to further review from today’s replay cameras. And while the
highlights from Super Bowl III aren’t
as provocative, they’re likely to be
manna to Jets fans, who haven’t had a
Super Bowl entry since.
Still, Namath’s biggest pro contributions were off the field. He played
the NFL and AFL off each other to
sign a contract valued in excess of
...a lovable rascal who lived fast in a blazing spotlight, and
who, while all too human, is basically a big-hearted schlub
— and now sober. That’s quite a trick for a man who still admits with a wry grin that during his playing days, he liked his
“women blonde and his Johnny Walker Red.”
$400,000 with the Jets, owned by former MCA agent Sonny Werblin, who
knew how to market a star under the glare of media lights.
And “Broadway Joe” was
a more than willing star. He
quickly became a ladies’ man,
cashing in with endorsement
deals (the most famous being
his ad for Beauty Mist pantyhose) and his own TV show
(with guests including Clint
Eastwood and Woody Allen,
who, a clip shows, he asks for
dating advice). To present-day
cameras, he relates with relish
the locker room story of how
he got the famous nickname.
The documentary doesn’t
gloss over the 2003 sideline
incident (“I want to kiss you,”
an inebriated Namath blubbers on camera), but rather
contextualizes it, with Namath
expressing regret Kolber understand-
ing and forgiveness. But the reclamation project is complete only when
Namath’s
daughter,
Jessica,
paints her father as a “professional dad” who made breakfast and
drove her to school every morning. When his marriage broke up
and Namath again turned to the
bottle shortly before the Kolber
incident, Jessica says, “I was 13,
and I’d never seen him drunk.”
Ultimately, the documentary
serves up a portrait of a smalltown boy made good — a lovable
rascal who lived fast in a blazing
spotlight, and who, while all too
human, is basically a big-hearted
schlub — and now sober. That’s
quite a trick for a man who still
admits with a wry grin that during his playing days, he liked his
“women blonde and his Johnny
Walker Red.”

I
think serendipity was playing its game the day that
author Mike Cattolico came by our office. He was
in the vicinity looking for a print and reprographic
store when he saw the Military Press sign above our office. He came in and introduced himself and inquired if
we might like to look at his self-published book, “Take
A Stand.”
It wasn’t long before he and I were having a great
time as I listened as he talked about his book and why
he’d written it.
At first glance I thought it was decent looking as far
as self-published projects go and took it home for a closer look.
What a marvelous book. I was soon caught up within
its pages. I come across a lot of books that detail personal military and war-time experiences, and yes, this one
has plenty from Mike’s early days as a seaman scout to
ultimately a commanding officer.
Further chapters tell the harrowing exploits experienced in Vietnam and the Philippines as Mike serves
as a deep-sea diver.
What I really liked about this book is that it is such
a multi-faceted delight. Mike throws in wonderful chapters detailing his childhood growing up in a time when
the “American Dream” was possible, leaders truly led,
and one could realize and attain dreams.
Later on in the book, Mike makes poignant observations comparing the generation of his time with the generations of today.
Interspersed
throughout Mike
has put in sidebars
that give us interesting facts on topics
such as pay scales,
cost of living and
other elements that
help illustrate the
differences between
then and now.
In the back of the
book there is a great
collection of notable
one-liners and chapter quotes that have
appeared in the book.
Some of these are absolute gems.
Mike tells his story honestly, pulls no punches and
throws in heaps of humor.
After meeting Mike in person, I can see this project
has been a dedicated labor of love and much more than
an autobiography. I am tempted to say that this book
should be a “must read” for everyone. We could all learn
a thing or two from Mike’s lifetime of achievement and
thoughtful insights into the ways of the world.

he night before I left for basic training (boot
camp), the boys at Telford Diving Unit threw a
party for me at the local Veterans of Foreign Wars
(VFW) post. None of us was a VFW, but the post waived
their requirement due to the specialness of the occasion
and the fact that the Vietnam conflict was in full swing.
A mixture of beverage holders—glasses full of blackberry brandy and mugs full of Black Label beer—made
my two-day train trip to
Great Lakes, Illinois, a fuzzy but memorable experience.
My first shipmate in the making was Bob Whetstone.
After I was able to manifest some semblance of postdrinking coherence, he said he had watched me all
night to see if I was going to live. He turned out to be
a best friend and, later, a navy corpsman and Vietnam
survivor.
Because I was a “natural leader,” I was appointed
RPOC (Recruit Petty Officer Chief). My job was to keep
my company in line when the company commander was
absent; in other words, I was the navy equivalent of
the much-publicized assistant marine drill instructor.
Military life suited me. It included all of the things I
was primed for in my youth: discipline, order, and regimentation. Actually, for me military life was a piece of
cake. While everyone else complained, I reveled in it.
No ditches to dig, no corn to pick, no animals to feed, no
water to carry. All I had to do was look smart, do my job,
and learn the navy way.
ou cannot describe combat to anyone who has not
been in it. A description is simply impossible. All veterans who have been exposed to combat situations
say the same thing. How can you describe the fear, anxiety,
adrenalin rush, confusion, strength coming from nowhere,
skin-crawling sights, deafening noise, little or no sense of direction from incoming fire,

death at any instant, screams and yells, splatters of human
detritus and other “unspeakables” flying about, trying to
make yourself invisible, trying to organize your disorganized
mind and body, and the build-up of pressure with no relief
valve in sight? Combat is entropy to the nth degree. It is pure
pandemonium.
Then, suddenly, it’s over. You check your body for any
kind of “stuff” that might have entered but not been felt during the melee. You look around at the aftermath and feel the
goo stuck to you — the kind you can never wash off. But then
you are suddenly ecstatic that the pieces of people you see
are not part of you.

A
wise person once told me that
she never complained about
cleaning her toilet. She was
just happy to have one. Unfortunately,
our wonderful country has many Kennys who do not appreciate the abundant opportunities that are within
their grasp. Since most of them have
never really landed on hard times,
they take things for granted. Everything is at their disposal … without
limitation. They don’t know what it is
to want or sacrifice, and they complain
when something is not immediately accessible to fulfill their frivolous and
selfish needs.
I have great concern for the people
I refer to as “rainbow chasers.” They
are narcissists of the first order and
have come to the unfortunate conclusion that the world owes them a living.
Actually, that’s incorrect; they think
the world owes them prosperity. I am
especially concerned that there seems
to be more of these rainbow chasers in
Generation X than in previous generations.
Experts say there are valid reasons
for that entitlement mentality and
that the biggest reason is rooted in
the birth rate. You see, after the baby
boom, the birth rate dropped off the
table. Demographically speaking, a
1 percent decline in the birth rate is
significant. It is astonishing that the
birth rate in 1965 was 30 percent lower
than in 1955. Why? It was a confluence
of many factors: a new war that kept
lots of potential dads away from home,
far more women entering the workplace and delaying making a family,
and the advent of the birth control pill.
The generation that is now between
the ages of twenty-five and forty-five
has had very little competition over
the years. The number of classmates
in school was manageable; seats were
available in their college classrooms;
and they enjoyed job opportunities
that baby boomers would have killed
for. In addition, they have been witness to and part of the greatest technological advances in the history of man.
My parents’ generation, what Tom
Brokaw astutely named “the greatest generation,” ushered in the widespread use of the automobile, the telephone, home refrigeration, air travel,
and many other revelations. And the
baby boom generation witnessed the
advent of the television, early computers, and many other advances.
But Generation X has seen the world
transmogrified through computers
and associated technology. It is easy to
take the Internet and the World Wide
Web for granted, but think about this:
An Internet connection has brought
knowledge that has been accumulating throughout the history of mankind
to desktops and cellular telephones everywhere.
When I was in school, we had libraries that used the Dewey decimal system and were limited by the physical
space allotted on the shelves. No such
restrictions exist anymore. Can anyone doubt that by the year 2020 the
ownership of a hard-copy book will be
limited to collectors? Paper books will
have no functional use anymore. We
will have the ability to download and
read any book ever published in the
world for a fraction of the cost of a paperback, and the device that stores the
text will be the size of a human hand
or smaller.
And how did we ever conduct business or arrange meetings without a
cell phone? Most of the greatest companies in existence today were founded without cell phones, but I question
whether they could succeed in today’s
business environment without them.
By the end of 2009, 90 DECIDE TO DE-
CIDE I learned about decision making
a long time ago. I think the best way to
present my thoughts on the subject is
to explain my “pier-and-boat philosophy.” Imagine you have one foot on
the pier and one foot on the boat, and
the boat is getting underway (leaving
the pier). You better make a decision
quickly—whether you are staying, going, or swimming. Indecision is a decision, and it will land you in the water.
The question is, can you swim?
Human nature dictates that we do
not like being wet and cold. We prefer to be dry and warm. How can you
stay dry, warm, comfy, and cozy and
still maintain self-respect when you
are forever chasing rainbows, sponging off others, depending on the luck
of the draw, and succumbing to the
idea of using others as a crutch to
compensate for your ineptitude, lack
of initiative, and compromised self
esteem? Some people may think that
I am overly subjective in my analysis
of Generation X. Maybe so. But if just
one reader experiences a wake-up
call, then this was time well spent.
I am not saying that today’s youth
must do it the way we did it. Frankly,
if they did they would be left behind.
Instead, I am saying that many of
our young minds are not being sufficiently challenged and disciplined
to think and develop in a way that
is concomitant with their abilities.

“THE ONE charm about marriage is that it makes a life of deception absolutely necessary for both parties,” said Oscar Wilde.

I DECIDED recently that sometimes people with a real story wait
too long to tell it. It may lose impact and forcefulness -- principals die
and escape immediate opprobrium. Pop history kind of passes it all
by.
Still, I was mildly intrigued when Mimi Alford came out with her
story of being a 19-year-old intern who had an affair with President
John F. Kennedy in 1962. For a lot of people, this is a big “so what else
is new?’ story. Others continue to be mildly titillated by the foibles of
the famous, no matter how long some of them are dead.
Mimi, now an attractive older woman, tells her tale a little late in
the book “Once Upon a Secret.” (Mimi’s relationship with Kennedy
was actually uncovered back in 2003 in another book about JFK. No
big deal was made of it at the time.)
She recited her feelings openly to TV legend Meredith Vieira. The
latter conducted the interview while frowning in feigned, or perhaps
actual, disapproval at the straightforward recitation of youthful infidelity. But Mimi seems to present her minor -- and not unique -- place
in history as a philosopher. She offers JFK’s powerful position as a
ragingly attractive man who also happened to be the most powerful chief executive in the world as the
reason for the brief liaison. She refuses to apologize for her past behavior.
I WAS thinking that this story of Mimi and JFK has plenty of other associations that weren’t all that
free of heartbreak and public disdain and dismay. I wrote for years about Kennedy’s love affair with
Judith Exner and that seems to have been a different kettle of fish.
Judith slept with a gun under her pillow ever after. (She claimed J. Edgar Hoover’s men spied on her
for years and she was afraid they might kill her.) She was desperately in love with JFK and thought he
was with her. She told me of breaking with the president and not wanting to. “I was 25 and in love. Was
I supposed to have more sense than the president of the United States?” (I always admired this quote.)
Judith confessed to me many years after I met her that she became pregnant by the president and
had an abortion arranged by mob boss, Sam Giancana. She said she became an innocent go-between
carrying payoff money between the White House and Chicago. (And Judith Exner never spoke publicly
about any of this until forced to by a congressional committee. So I more or less believed most of what
she confessed to me.)
MIMI is in a different category. She tries to come
off as playful; as she says she and the president were
“playful.” They took baths together with yellow rubber duckies, she asserts. He was sometimes downright
“silly.”
Except for the feelings of Jacqueline Kennedy,
about which Mimi remains buttoned up, her attitude
attempts to strike an “Oh, it was completely harmless” vibe. But was it really? JFK pushing drugs on
her, expecting her to perform sex on other men while
he watched, never showing her real tenderness. They
never kissed, she recalls. JFK might have been a potentially great president, but he was a flawed human
being. And she was still a teenager! That she would
say the sex was consensual, adding, “I wouldn’t call it
rape,” is in itself disturbing. Who was calling it rape?
Maybe even at this late date she herself wonders?
There is no longer anything shocking about adultery. Nor can the myth of “Camelot” be anymore tarnished than it has been. There is no one left alive to
verify the more salacious aspects of Mimi’s tale. Or
the rubber duckies. Still, based on what we know from
other sources, Mimi’s confessions sound like JFK’s behavior with all his women, except for Jackie, whom he
alternately revered and disrespected.
With changing times, and a much less protective media, we suffered through the Clinton/Lewinsky scandal, which led to impeachment and a rather ruined life
for Miss Lewinsky. Monica wrote a book to pay off her
enormous legal fees and attempt to rehabilitate herself
in the eyes of all. (In Europe, the entire incident was
considered laughable. We would impeach a president
for his infidelities?!)
I don’t know why Mimi wrote her book. If, as she
says, it was all so casual, playful and consensual, why
bother? It doesn’t help JFK’s reputation, and unless
she wanted to paint herself as a victim of a powerful,
insistent man, the parade has passed by on Kennedy
mistresses.
Play Ball, Play in Phoenix and Scottsdale
Since 1947 the Cactus League, www.cactusleague.com, has been key to of major league baseball’s spring training. This month, fifteen teams,
including all of the clubs from California, play ball
in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area. The league’s newest stadium is Salt River Fields at Talking Stick in
Scottsdale. It is a hub of Cactus League activity with
both the Diamondbacks and Rockies calling it home.
Where to stay? Easy. The AAA Four-Diamond
rated Scottsdale Resort & Conference Center is located just a few minutes from the aforementioned
Salt River Fields. They have three restaurants, two
pools, a fitness center, a full service spa and salon,
four lighted tennis courts and guaranteed tee times

staff to interact easily with guests. The comfortable,
large sleeping rooms feature flat screen TVs and
southwestern style architecture and furnishings.
What to do? Here are several sightseeing suggestions for before or after a ballgame. A pilgrimage to
Taliesin West, Frank Lloyd Wright’s desert masterpiece, is a must. It is a National Historic Landmark
in the Sonoran desert and home to architectural students from around the world. For a treat, we spent
a lazy afternoon at the Spa Avania at the Hyatt Regency followed by an eclectic “Wine Me Dine Me”
feast at their Southwest Bistro. Diners watch the
proceedings in the open kitchen as the chef and
his staff prepare a four-course meal that includes
tequila and wine pairings. The Musical Instrument
Museum, www.themim.org, touts itself as “the most
extraordinary museum you’ll ever see.” It is. Their
collection includes over 10,000 musical instruments
from almost 200 countries and territories, as well
as ethnic, folk and tribal displays. Grab a wireless headset and roam the wide-open spaces, listening to music from around the world while watching
videos of musicians. The Arizona Science Center
can be found in downtown Phoenix’ Heritage & Science Park. It houses the Dorrance Planetarium, an
IMAX Theater, along with four levels of permanent
and rotating exhibits including over 300 that are
hands-on. A calendar of events, hours, etc., can be

Q: From the beginning did you know
that there was no way you could get
a Hollywood actor to do this with the
concept you had?
McCoy: Definitely.
Scott: In the beginning as a filmmaker
you do use actors. It was our initial
conception of the project, telling real
stories and using the actors. But once
we got to meet the guys is when we realized the complexity of the character
and had the realization that we had to
use the real guys. An actor is only going to portray on aspect of the character. We wanted the complexity of it;
the husband side, the brother side, the
father side, the warrior side and the
sacrifice.
McCoy: Then you start to look at operation; these guys are the best in the
world at what they do. When we are
integrating in the side of real operations, they are real operations! We set
out to make an authentic action film
that showcased what they do. Then
you had to use the real guys. We set
out to make an honest action film and
you start to move forward. The way
the film started to string itself out you
couldn’t even think of using anyone
else. It naturally involved into that.

humble servant oriented people that
want to serve and do the nation’s work.
We all said no because of the history
of the quiet professional and not advertise the nature of the work. These
are the things that are the fabric of

screen as something different. It gives
a glimpse into what we experience in
our daily lives and what we have been
living with for a decade and beyond
with sustained combat against our enemies – and it will continue.

and all of our first responders all do
things like this and we wanted to explore that. They are such humble people.
McCoy: Its counter to our current culture. Our current culture is all about

Q: Greg, my friend Lou Tecco sent us the article you did on
Yenko, Gibb and other Camaro greats. You missed a very important factor on an otherwise good story. That is how history
gets re-written, right?
1973 — “Jungle Pam” Hardy and “Jungle Jim” Liberman with his Chevy

Y
ou’d be hard-pressed to say who was hotter back in the ’70s– “Jungle Pam” in her gogo boots, short-shorts, and titillating tops… or “Jungle Jim” Liberman’s rubber-melting
burnouts, wheelstands, and screaming up and down the length of the dragstrip backwards. Liberman was arguably one of the most flamboyant and memorable showmen on the
funny car circuit. He knew better than anyone what the crowd wanted– and hiring the 18 yr old
tall, dark and sexy “Jungle Pam” Hardy as his sassy staging sidekick was a calculated stroke of
marketing genius. But she was no lightweight. She quickly learned to turn a wrench, know her
way around cars, the crowds, and the scene. The fans loved her.
“Jungle Pam” is still a legend to this day, and a true original. Sadly, Jim Liberman left us
back in ’77 when his Corvette hit a bus head-on in a tragic road accident. His spirit lives through
all the drivers he’s inspired, and the countless memories of his “Jungle Jim” antics and achievements during Liberman’s legendary racing career.

Dick Harrell built the first 427 conversions for Nickey
(Chicago), and he also did most of the first 25, including the
very first for Don Yenko (Pennsylvania).
Dick Harrell also put Fred Gibb (Chevrolet) on the map. I
am not sure of when Dana did the cars, but I could ask Dale
Armstrong as he is a knowledgeable Dana guy. I do know
that Bill Thomas got a Camaro in early to mid 1966, and that
is how all the mounts and headers were formulated (for the
427).
Dick went to Nickey to run the performance parts center
and convert the Camaros. The reason for this was to have the
dealership sell 50 of the 427 Camaros to make them legal for
AHRA class racing. Thanks, Dale Pulde, Los Angeles, CA.
A: Nothing better than getting a letter from a nationally
respected nitro funny car racer! Of note is the fact that Dale
and Harrell’s daughter, Valerie, have been together for years
so the info we received is without question correct.
First and foremost, Valerie Harrell receives kudos from
this scribe for her unending efforts in keeping the Dick Harrell name alive after his untimely passing in a nitro funny
car accident in Canada back in 1971.
Pulde helps explain that the late Dick Harrell, known as
“Mr. Chevrolet,” was the major mover behind the 427 Camaro engine swaps, be it Nickey, Yenko, Gibb or whatever
before or after the General Motors COPO blessing. Harrell
also branched out on his own with a Kansas City based performance center (see ad). Had we not lost Harrell in that racing accident, there’s a good chance today he’d be in the John
Force class or racer with countless championships under his
belt.

Remember When . . .
The Corvette is launched!
As introduced in 1953, the Corvette was mostly a thrown together experiment. Production was limited to 300 units
total, so sales of the entirely new model was not a problem.
The first Corvette reached the end of the assembly line on June 30, 1953. The first 15
cars were built, all by hand, in the back of a customer delivery garage in Flint, Michigan.
The rest came from a new facility devoted to Corvettes in St. Louis which had a capacity
to build 10,000 cars a year. The first two were engineering test cars and, according to official records, were destroyed. Of the first 300 Corvettes, approximately 225 are known
to exist today.
All 1953 Corvettes were Polo White with a red interior and a black canvas top. There
were two options offered: a signal seeking AM radio ($145.15) and a heater ($91.40). Although listed as options, all 1953 Corvettes were equipped with both items. The base price
was $3,498.00, including the federal excise tax and $248.00 for shipping and handling.
The radio had an interesting feature: since fiberglass is electrically inert, the antenna
was simply incorporated in the trunk lid. This would not be possible with a conventional
steel body.
When introduced in 1953, the Corvette featured the “Blue Flame” six cylinder engine. This is not as the Chevrolet
engineering team wanted things, but they had no choice. Although other GM marques featured V8 motors they were not
willing to share; a very different situation compared to years later when various divisions would feature the same powerplants. It was renowned for reliability but with a rating of 105 HP, performance and sportiness was not included. The
engineering staff responded with the usual engine upgrade methods. A more radical camshaft rubbing on solid lifters,
dual valve springs, and a higher compression ratio cylinder head (8.0:1; previous was 7.5:1) all contributed to the effort.
The largest gain was achieved via an upgrade to the induction system (right). Three Carter type YH sidedraft carburetors featuring “bullet” air cleaners with an aluminum manifold were incorporated and the output soared to 150 bhp at
4,500 RPM.

then go off and do what needs to be
done to protect us all.
Talk about the toys in the film, the
boats, the guns and the weaponry how
was working with such an arsenal?
Captain Duncan Smith: The goal is to allow somebody to see who we are understanding the men themselves and
the sacrifices they and their families
everyday. When I first saw the movie
the scene that struck me the most was
the Lt.’s wife sliding behind the door
crying when he left. No other movie
has captured the heart and essence
of being on a SEAL Team and I don’t
think a film like this will be made
again. This is the one opportunity to
get our story right and it worked out
brilliantly.

We didn’t kid ourselves into thinking
we are actors. This is just who we are.
McCoy: What’s interesting in the film
is that we got all the toys and its
spectacular but we wanted the film
to end with all of that stripped away
and just the men amongst themselves
with what they had in their hands to
work with. That’s why at the end scene
there is no air support and the men
augment with whatever they have to
find. That’s really representative of
them having to think on their feet and
respond. These are really intelligent
guys and they just figure it out. So we
had to end it without the toys.
Lets talk about you filming the actions
– was it tricky, scary, both, all?
McCoy: Our whole lives are about action, that’s what we do day in and day
out. It was just fantastic to be challenged and keep up with the boys. We
were completely challenged mentally
and physically. We put the cameras in
the middle of the gunfights and in the
middle of the ops. That was Scott and I
in the middle of the cameras.
Scott: That was all the dangerous stuff
and the light fire stuff. I retired as a
stuntman around 35 so it had been five
years since doing anything so I was a
kid in a candy store getting back in the
middle of the action.
McCoy: We wanted to bring a new level
of action to the big screen, real action.
This movie is in camera, for real action. There is no CGI in this, there’s no
trickery. There is no CGI. Everyone is
used to faking it.No, this is for real!
Scott: We are bringing back the action
genre because it died. In the ‘90s is
when it died and went into this CGI actor on a green screen world. It sucks!
What happened to the great action
films! We are determined to bring it
all back.
The boat scene is pretty intense.
McCoy: And that was all live fire!
Scott: The audiences are so use to seeing CGI so when they see it for real it’s
kind of shocking.
How much input did the SEALs have?
Scott: A lot. We wanted that, we wanted to make sure it was authentic. The
operational plans came from them. A
target vessel in the South Pacific has
something you need, how would you
get it – that’s what we’d ask them.
So we’d get our camera crew around
them.
What do you want your viewers to get
from seeing this film?
McCoy: We want the American public to
connect with the concept of an act of
valor. Doing heroic things for the sake
of your brothers and sisters. There are
people all throughout the military and
first responders that risk their lives
on a daily basis for the person next to
them or people they don’t know. We
really think that that’s an important
idea to grab a hold of in America right
now.
Scott: I always use this analogy; you
never know who’s in line behind you
because he might save your life sometime. I think that so important.
