Setting up the Airlink® Redwing CDMA and U.S. Robotics® Sportster® Modem Purpose This technical bulletin describes the procedures for the installation and initialization of the remote Airlink® Redwing CDMA modem (www.airlink.com), the computer-side U.S. Robotics® Sportster® modem (this modem is also referred to as the U.S. Robotics® V.92 External Faxmodem, model no. 5686E), and the related Instantel® Blastware® software settings. These are the modems that Instantel recommends for wireless remote data acquisition on North American CDMA networks. This will enable communications between the remote monitor and a personal computer running Blastware software, and allow the use of the Instantel® Auto Call Home™ automated call-in feature (requires an Instantel® BlastMate® III or MiniMate Plus™ with a serial number of 6000 or higher) and the Blastware Mail automated report distribution feature. Refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for information on hardware and software installations, restrictions, or warnings. Set-up and test recording parameters before the monitoring system is moved into the field. If required, access the remote monitor using Blastware software to change the setups. This can be achieved through the standard remote access commands contained under the Remote Access menu. Refer to the Blastware Operator Manual for more information about modem operation, the Auto Call Home feature and Blastware Mail feature. Explanation Many Instantel dealers and customers in North America have requested a compact, easy to set up solution for wireless remote monitoring. Historically, cellular support for data transmission has been limited, making configuration and operation of data modems difficult – the Airlink Redwing modem is a reliable solution. This modem is relatively easy to set up and is supported in the United States by Verizon™, and in Canada by Bell Mobility™. Instantel has successfully tested the system with Minimate Plus monitors in both Canada and the USA. The AirLink Redwing CDMA is a rugged Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) modem designed for communicating data and information back to a host location. The Redwing is a low-cost replacement for many landline, private radio, CDPD, and circuitswitched cellular installations. Equipment Required 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. Airlink® Communications Inc. Redwing CDMA modem U.S. Robotics® V.92 External Faxmodem (model no. 5686E) 25-Pin to 9-Pin modem serial communications cable (commercial supplier) Modem serial communications cable, 9-Pin to 9-Pin (commercial supplier) A regular voice package from either Verizon Wireless™ or Bell Mobility™ CDMA Null Modem Cable (Instantel part no. 718A3701) A personal computer with Blastware software, version 7.0, and the redwing.cdm modem type file acquired from Instantel, or Blastware software, version 8.0 (redwing.cdm modem type file is included) Blastware Operator Manual (Instantel part no. 714U0301) “Setting up a U.S. Robotics® Sportster® with a PC and the Blastmate® or Minimate Plus™” (Instantel part no. 714B0033 - This modem is also referred to as the U.S. Robotics® V.92 External Faxmodem, model no. 5686E) Installation of the Airlink Redwing CDMA Modem 1. Purchase and activate the telephone service package; this is a regular voice call package from either Bell Mobility (Real-Time package) or with Verizon Wireless (Local Plan package). Note: Do not add any extra features onto these basic packages. Often, the salesperson will offer an upgraded package, such as the 1X service from Bell Mobility. Decline any offers, as these may affect the setup and operation of the modem for this application. 2. Connect the 9-Pin serial communications cable to the AirLink Redwing modem, and then to the computer – turn the modem on. Refer to the manual for your personal computer and the Airlink manufacturer’s installation instructions for more information about attaching serial cables. Start the Windows® Hyper-Terminal program – if the Hyper-Terminal program has never been used, a dialog box will appear requesting initial set-up information, including Country/Region, area code, carrier and number to use to dial out. Input the data for these fields and select ‘OK’. www.instantel.com 4. The next dialog box that appears is ‘Connection Description’. Enter the name and select an icon to associate with the new connection, and select ‘OK’. 5. The ‘Connect To’ dialog box appears next; ensure that the ‘Connect Using:’ selection is set to COM1 and select ‘OK’. 6. The dialog box, ‘COM1 Properties’ appears. Set the properties as shown in the figure below and select ‘Apply’ and then ‘OK’. You are now ready to set up and initialize the Airlink Redwing modem. Note: R On the Practical Edge of Technology 714B0056 Rev 01 Everything you type in Hyper-Terminal must be in CAPITAL letters; for ease-of-use, ensure that the ‘Caps Lock’ key is activated on your keyboard. If you enter an error, press the ‘CTRL’ key and the letter ‘H’ simultaneously and retype the character(s). CERTIFIED TO THE ISO 9001 QUALITY STANDARD 7. Type the ‘AT’ command and then press ENTER. Below is an example: If the ‘AT’ command does not appear, type the ‘ATE1’ and then press ‘ENTER’. If there is not an ‘OK’ response from the modem, then type ‘ATQ0’ and press ‘Enter’. If the modem is still not responding, ensure that it is on and that all of the connections are securely fastened. 8. To set the modem to communicate at a 9600 baud rate, type ‘AT+IPR=9600’ and then press ‘ENTER’. Refer to the figure below: R On the Practical Edge of Technology 714B0056 Rev 01 9. Disconnect from the modem using the icon. Via the ‘File’ menu select ‘Properties’ and a dialog box opens. Select the ‘Configure’ button to open the ‘Configuration’ dialog box. From the ‘Bits per second’ drop down menu, select 9600 for the baud rate, and then select ‘Apply’. Confirm this by selecting ‘OK’, which closes the COM1 Properties Configuration dialog box. Select ‘OK’ again, to close the ‘Properties’ dialog box. CERTIFIED TO THE ISO 9001 QUALITY STANDARD 10. To enter any additional information, the modem must now be unlocked. Enter the Lock Code provided by the phone package service provider. Type the command ‘AT~NAMLCK’, as shown below: Refer to the following description of the ‘AT~NAMLCK’ command: R On the Practical Edge of Technology 714B0056 Rev 01 11. Enter the Modem Telephone Number, System ID and Network ID with the ‘AT~NAMVAL’ command, as shown below. This information is modem specific, and is provided by the service provider. There are parts to this procedure, a) setting the active account; type ‘AT~NAMVAL=0’ and press ‘ENTER’, b) query the active account ‘NAM0’ by inputting ‘AT~NAMVAL?0’, and press ‘ENTER’, and c) enter all the proper information (i.e. Modem Telephone Number, System Identification Number (SIN), and the Network Identification Number (NID)). Typically, the service provider presets the SID and NID. Enter ‘AT~NAMVAL=0,6133278375,16420,65535’ and press ‘ENTER’. CERTIFIED TO THE ISO 9001 QUALITY STANDARD Refer to the following information for a description of the ‘AT~NAMVAL’ command: 12. Enter AT+ATINITSTATE=1 and then press ‘Enter’. 13. To program the initializing string for the modem, type ‘AT+ATINIT=E0Q1&D0S0=1$QCVAD=4,C’ and then press ‘ENTER’. After the modem responds with ‘OK’, type ‘AT~RESET’ and press ‘ENTER’. The modem will respond with the message ‘RESETTING’. 14. Press the ‘Reset’ button on front of the modem. Installation Of the U.S. Robotics® V.92 External Faxmodem (Model No. 5686E) 15. Using the serial communications cable, connect the U.S. Robotics® V.92 External Faxmodem to the computer and turn it on. 16. Make sure that the DIP switches at the back of the modem are set as follows: 1 down 2 up 3 down 4 up 5 down 6 up 7 up 8 down 17. Start the Blastware software. Click on the ‘Unit’ menu option and then on ‘Communications…’. Ensure that the proper Port (COM1) and Baud Rate (9600) are selected. Even though a U.S. Robotics® modem is connected to the computer, select the ‘Redwing Modem (redwing.mdm)’ from the ‘Modem Type’ drop down menu. 18. Select the ‘Initialize PC Modem’ button. This will initialize the computer modem to communicate properly with the Redwing modem. Note: 19. Connect the Airlink Redwing modem to the Instantel Series III unit using the Instantel CDMA Null Modem Cable, part number 714A3701. The modems are now ready to test in the office and use at the remote site. R On the Practical Edge of Technology 714B0056 Rev 01 The modem will need to be initialized with the ‘redwing.mdm’ file every time the modem is powered up. CERTIFIED TO THE ISO 9001 QUALITY STANDARD Troubleshooting for the Airlink® Redwing Modem 1. To troubleshoot the modem, the display and the echo must be turned on. To turn the display on, use the Hyper-Terminal window and type ‘ATE1’ and then type ‘ENTER’. Type ‘ATQ0’ and press ‘ENTER’ to turn the echo back on. 2. To view the modem settings, type ‘AT&V’.
