The Pet Gazette F A L L / W I N T E R 2 0 1 3 Printed Tri-annually by the Upper Peninsula Animal Welfare Shelter, Inc. Youth Helping the Homeless Pets SPECIAL POINTS OF INTEREST: Upcoming events Written by Ann Brownell UPAWS has great support from our community and much of that support is from our youth. Here is a spotlight on a couple of caring examples of how our youth supports UPAWS. Junior Girl Scout Troop 5101 from Harvey (pictured at right) helped UPAWS and they earned their Bronze Award! The girls made wonderful homemade cat beds and toys and they also donated enough to sponsor the full adoption fees of four UPAWS pets! Thank you girls for your hard work and your kind hearts! Strut Your Mutt 2013 Winners Safety Tips for the Holidays Spay/neuter programs Asa (pictured below) had his 9th birthday party and instead of gifts for himself, Asa asked that presents be brought for the UPAWS homeless pets! PLUS Asa also donated to feature a UPAWS pet for adoption in an upcoming Action Shopper ad. Thank you, Asa, for your kindness! Written by Reva Laituri Congratulations to Stewey Schuessler, winner of the 2014 pet photo calendar contest! A record 40,820 votes were cast to determine the top 12 winners. Stewey alone garnered more than 5,600 votes to cement his position as not only this year’s winner, but all time vote earner. A huge thank you to everyone who submitted entries and those who voted for their favorite photo; your participation made this year the most profitable one to date. The calendars make great gifts and can be purchased at the shelter and the Lights of Love Holiday Booth at the Westwood Mall. The cost per calendar is $12.00, with 100% of the proceeds going toward caring for our homeless animals. P.S.: Don’t forget to start snapping photos now for next year’s contest! Stewey’s record-breaking photo Did You Know You Can Help Homeless Animals With Your Tax Return? When preparing your taxes this year, Michigan Taxpayers can check a box to designate a portion of their state tax returns to the Companion Animal Welfare Fund. The process is simple, just check the box and indicate how much you would like to donate. This fund helps local shelters provide spaying and neutering services to homeless animals. This year, your shelter, UPAWS, received a grant from this fund for $7,130! By contributing to this fund, you are helping UPAWS, and other shelters, receive much needed financial support. Likely, most people think dogs and cats. What people may not realize (unless they are regular visitors to the shelter or check out the “other animals” page on our website) is that the shelter admits and rehomes many other species. While I’ve become accustomed to seeing just about everything, one morning this past September, just how many of these “other” animals we help jumped out at me…literally. That day, as I opened the door to the lobby, I was greeted by a roomful of loose rabbits who were getting some exercise while their cages were being cleaned. A couple of months earlier a female rabbit was admitted and shortly thereafter gave birth to 10 babies! While they grew and matured, they were kept in the staff lunchroom, but now that they were old enough to be spayed or neutered, were out in the lobby, available for adoption. In addition to the litter, their mama, several un-related rabbits and an Reva with bunny, Cuteness assortment of other pocket pets filled the cages lining the walls. It was almost overwhelming knowing we had to find homes for so many little critters. Because not all shelters will accept animals other than cats and dogs, I began to wonder how many people would even think of looking at UPAWS for other kinds of pets. To give you some idea of what is available at the shelter, the following are some statistics from January through September of this year: Of 1,254 animals admitted, 617 were cats and 497 were dogs. 140, or 9%, were “other” animals and included 38 rabbits, 30 guinea pigs, 17 hamsters, 16 birds (including 2 ducks), 15 rats, 13 gerbils, 2 ferrets, 2 degus, 2 hedgehogs, 2 turtles, 1 chinchilla, 1 iguana, and 1 pot-bellied pig. So, please, when you or a friend or relative is looking for a pet other than a cat or dog, don’t forget to check UPAWS or your local shelter to see if you can give a homeless animal a second chance (also ask if any are in foster care!). And more importantly, help curb the number of homeless animals by avoiding having unwanted litters. Keep only one sex, or at least keep the sexes separated. And, especially in the case of rabbits, if you are going to keep both sexes, please get them spayed or neutered! -Reva Laituri, UPAWS Board President Now Accepting 2014 Nominations Written by Reva Laituri, UPAWS Board President The UPAWS Awards Committee is looking for very special humans and animals to honor for their accomplishments and in recognition of the human/ animal bond. PAGE 2 FALL/WINTER From the Shelter This time of year brings to mind many reasons to be thankful. Surrounded by the generosity of our supporters, we can't help but get excited about the season! UPAWS could not even begin to count all the reasons we are thankful, but we can try! We are incredibly thankful for the adopters, volunteers, donors, local veterinarians, our local supportive businesses and our community. We LOVE the community and the way they work with us, provide for the animals, and always offer love and support. But we mustn’t forget a key component of UPAWS, the staff. Day after day the staff arrive to UPAWS, roll up their sleeves and prepare for a day that can go anywhere. They manage to do this without taking all of the animals home, although many of them do get an overnight stay, long term foster care or permanent adoption with our staff. The days are full for our staff; caring for the animals and giving each individual attention, serving the many visitors of UPAWS, organizing volunteers, completing adoptions, accepting animals into our care, taking cruelty complaints, walking and walking and walking dogs, cleaning poo, pee, puke and getting purrs, wags and kisses. They handle each interaction with understanding, creativity and compassion. They create calm out of chaos and somehow find the time to soothe the animals and create a home instead of just a shelter. Thank you to our staff, who also wear the titles of foster homes, volunteers, fundraisers and adopters. They are family to the animals and friends to the community. We at UPAWS are thankful for a community that is able to provide for our shelter and allow these wonderful staff members to 2013 Some of our amazing UPAWS staff! Directing Choice Dollars is easy. Simply go to Thrivent.com/ thriventchoice or call 800-THRIVENT and state “Thrivent Choice.” Individually, we can all make a difference. Together, we can do even more! Spay It Forward Rummage Sales Special thanks to Lareina Van Strien for organizing this year’s rummage sales! Over the course of the summer this event had three separate sales to raise funds for the Spay it Forward: Community Spay/Neuter Fund. Large crowds of people came to shop and support UPAWS! Thank you to the Masonic Building for providing a location for this event, the hard working volunteers and to all the people that donated. Dr. Brauer, of Marquette Vet Clinic, is one of many community veterinarians who partner with UPAWS to offer community spay/ neuter assistance. Spay Day USA 2014 Spay-ghetti Dinner We are still in the preliminary stages of planning this years’ event. All monies raised will go to our Community Spay/Neuter Program, which is heavily used by our neighbors. Please consider donating to this fund! Once we have determined the date/time/place, we will post it on our website! Check back (at upaws.org) for more info. Written by Lareina Van Strien, UPAWS Manager Because of the generosity and hardworking staff at our local vets, UPAWS is excited to once again announce Spay Day USA! Over the past four years, Spay Day USA has been successful in altering 140 dogs and 100 cats through UPAWS! Starting Jan. 1st, UPAWS will be working with the local vets to sign up local pets for reduced cost spaying and neutering. This wonderful program has been a great success in providing this important surgery to those that need it, reducing intake to local shelters and keeping your pets healthy. Thank you to the local vets for partnering in this program and watch our website for details! We’d Love to Hear Your “Happy Tail”! Please send us an update with a photo of your UPAWS adopted pet! On the way home, the only thing on your mind is how the cat is just going to LOVE your family, LOVE your other cats, LOVE your dogs, LOVE your for this adjustment. Be patient. Cats adjust at their own speed. There is no magical formula nor is there a “typical” response. There are some things, however, you can do to make this transition and adjustment easier for your cat. A slow introduction is best. Give the cat time to acclimate to your home…one step at a time. Let the first introduction to your house be one of “smell”. Most cats HATE car rides so once you’re home make the initial time in your house a comfortable experience. If possible, put the cat in a quiet room with a door that you can close and a litter box, water, food and a cozy place to snooze nearby. Consider this area your new cat’s “territory” - no other animals allowed! Close the door, open up the carrier and back off. Allow the cat to come out on his own, in his own time. used to each other’s scent through a closed door. There are some measures you can take leading up to the physical encounter to make it easier. Rub each cat with a towel and then exchange the towels so they can “smell” each other before they “see” each other. You can also just exchange bedding. Another trick is to put a little bit of vanilla extract on both cats’ foreheads and at the base of their tails. This supposedly masks their individual scent so they don’t view each other cat as “foreign” and, as a result, feel less threatened. Keep in mind that all face-to-face introductions need to be supervised whether they are between kids, dogs or other cats. When introducing a new cat to your family, you should make the transition as stress free as possible. It will probably take a few weeks for the adjustment, but eventually you will “see” the Once the cat is out of the carrier, let him approach you. It may be tempting, but don’t pick up the cat, let the cat come to you. Let the cat set the pace for exploring its new home and family. It may take as long as 6 months for your cat to acclimate. UPAWS received a grant from the ASPCA to offer FREE cat spays and neuters to KI Sawyer residents. This grant is one of the first in the nation and we are thrilled to be part of a program that will reduce the number of animals admitted to UPAWS, provide a valuable service to our community and reduce the number of unwanted litters. UPAWS, working with the Gwinn Saywer Vet Clinic, will provide spays and neuters to over 300 cats! We are very thankful to both Gwinn Sawyer Vet Clinic and the ASPCA. If you are a KI Sawyer resident and currently have a cat in need of fixing, please contact UPAWS. PAGE 5 THE PET GAZETTE Lilly’s Story Written by Gary & Kathy Lyons This is a story about Lilly, or “Miss Lilly”, as she is known by her friends. Our son, T.J. Lyons, adopted her as a puppy from UPAWS about 11 years ago. Lilly had almost 10 years of pure joy and happiness with her beloved Dad, TJ, Terrence, or Terry, as he was known to his many friends and family. Unfortunately, what started out as a beautiful day, on Tuesday, March 20, 2012, turned into a nightmare for those of us who loved our Terrence so much. We lost Terrence in an auto accident that day. Lilly was with him, as she always was on his days off from work. How she survived is a miracle, but she did and now lives with her Grandma and Grandpa Lyons. Lilly is a laid back, quiet, happy, gentle giant, weighing in at 95 lbs. I have always noticed people just naturally gravitate to her and she loves it. We decided it was time to turn a negative into a positive by getting Lilly into the Pet Dog Therapy Group. We were all signed up for testing on March 17th of this year. On March 3rd, Lilly tried to jump a wooden gate to join her dog buddies in the fenced in yard, and broke her right front leg. Since then it has been many trips to the vet, a splint, a cast, x-rays, biopsy, more x-rays, etc.— a real roller coaster ride of emotions. To date, all is looking very good. The biopsy came back “inconclusive”, chest x-rays clean and clear, and a recent x-ray shows the leg is healing. The Power of Prayer is amazing! Lilly is feeling very good, and we did go to the testing for Pet Dog Therapy. Though we are unable to actually test her physical abilities, due to the cast on her leg, those in charge saw firsthand how people just naturally draw to Lilly and how well she responds. Miss Lilly is seeking her therapy certification Lilly is a real joy and a pleasure to have in our lives, for the past year our Lilly has come with me whenever or where ever I go. Believe it or not, she continues to love car rides. The joy this “rescue dog” has given us during this most difficult time in our lives, the loss of our beloved son, is truly a miracle in itself. PAGE 7 THE PET GAZETTE Volunteer Spotlight Linda DeGabriele and her pal, Tuxedo Written by Melanie Bell, Community Outreach Coordinator We would like to recognize one of our amazing volunteers, Linda DeGabriele, who's dedication to helping animals is evident through her commitment to volunteering at UPAWS. Linda began volunteering at UPAWS in the summer of 2013. She leads an active lifestyle, and has a passion for dance. She participates in dance nearly every day. Every day, that is, except the one day each week she spends walking the dogs at UPAWS! Keep the human treats away from the pets! Chocolate, candy, gum, alcohol, holly berries, and chicken bones are more present in our homes this time of year and are all dangers to pets. Keep the decorations up high too - these new items look like fun toys to all of our four legged family members. With lots of visitors during this festive time, be sure to provide your pet with a quiet place to rest if feeling overwhelmed. Cover cords with cord protectors or PVC tubing to guard them from chewing. We all get very busy during this time of year. Please remember to set aside time each day to give your pet attention. We wanted a pet that Gabriel, our three year old, could help take care of, play with, and would also fit in our small house. We decided a kitten would make a great addition and started looking on the UPAWS website. At the shelter the kitten that stood out was a little, black male kitten. As soon as he was in my arms he rolled over like a baby cradled in my elbow. I rocked him back and forth and scratched his belly. He was so calm and would not stop purring. I knew this kitten would make a perfect companion for my son. Gabriel named his little black kitten Jake after a Disney show called Jake and the Neverland Pirates. Jake is a dog in a cat’s body. He snuggles us all the time, follows us around the house, and lies by our feet when he can’t get in our lap. Jake loves playing catch and will retrieve balls, drop them at our feet, and look up at us and wait for us to throw them again. He also loves going for car rides to grandma’s house. Jake is always in the mood for a belly scratch and still loves rolling on his back and curling up in my arms. He is the perfect completion to our family. Jake enjoys playtime with his 3-year-old companion I was lucky enough to adopt Bugs in October, 2009. My parents happened to be at UPAWS and told me about this cat, who loved to give "hugs". I knew I had to meet him. Before starting the adoption process, I had to get the free and clear from my boyfriend, who was allergic to cats. He eventually gave in and Bugs became part of our family--Bugs became a pal to our dog, Lou. Bugs is such a good boy! He really does give hugs--he wraps his arms around your neck and purrs away, sometimes even drooling if he's super content. Bugs loves his food and is a big boy (one of his nick names is "Chunky Monkey"). Bugs reminds me more of a dog, as he waits at the door for me, comes if I tap my hand on my leg for him to follow and is always there for me. If I'm crying, he's there right away. He's definitely a constant companion. -Ashley Kinnunen Trudy lounges on the beach after fetching the perfect stick Miss Trudy Lou’s life has been an adventure right from the start. Born in a high kill area that was overrun with dogs, this little puppy’s future looked grim. Thankfully, Trudy and her siblings found their way to UPAWS thanks to a group of wonderful volunteers. Trudy was the size of a guinea pig when I got her 3 years ago. She is now full grown, the size of a cat, but Trudy’s adventures are BIG. I lead a fairly active lifestyle, loving the outdoors, hiking, biking and skiing so I wanted a dog that could join me in these activities. I brought Trudy out in the woods right away on hikes showing her that she would not just be a lap dog but instead an ADVENTURE dog! She has lived up to the challenge! Trudy has summated Hogsback Mountain and Sugarloaf Mountain many times. She loves to swim in Lake Superior paddling out far distances to fetch that perfect stick. Trudy is a great little mountain biking companion running along with me on the trails. She has been bluegill fishing on the boat, four wheeling, kayaking, ice fishing for perch on the frozen lake, camping, trail running and road tripping with her head out of the window the whole way. Where does she get all this energy you might ask? Well, this pup loves to sleep until noon and on a gloomy day she loves to lie around, snuggle, and watch movies (Action/Adventure movies mostly). Trudy has enriched my life and we will continue to have grand adventures together. -Michelle Schwemin Bugs is known for giving great “hugs”!
