In November, on the occasion of her 100th birthday, Bella Italia made her an honorary member and visited her in the nursing home. She was believed to be the oldest local person of Italian descent. Sadly, Mrs. Pistritto passed away in January. Possa riposare in pace. Send items for the newsletter to the Bella Italia mailing address or email address. Both are given below. Bella Italia is growing rapidly! I encourage you to renew your membership when you receive your renewal notice. If you have already received a renewal notice and have sent in your membership dues, GRAZIE! We appreciate your continuing membership. If you have received a renewal notice and have not sent in your dues, the other members of the Executive Board and I wonder why. We can speculate on reasons, but that would be fruitless. We want to know why you have not renewed your membership. Please send us an email at bellaitaliagoldenisles@yahoo.com or send us a response via regular mail to 115 Village at Glynn Place, PMB #119, Brunswick, GA 31525, as soon as possible. The Executive Board wants to determine if there are any common reasons so we may address them and see what can be done to mitigate them. In the coming months, when you receive your renewal notice at the beginning of the month your membership expires, please pay your dues as soon as possible. As I mentioned in the last issue of the newsletter, the Executive Board is planning a variety of activities and events for the coming months and beyond. We do, however, need more members to volunteer to help in the planning and execution of our activities and events. Right now, one of our most important Executive Board positions is vacant; the Co-Chair of the Social/Cultural Activities Committee. This position is mainly responsible for planning all of our events and activities. We need someone who is willing to do the 'legwork' and make the phone and personal contacts needed to find venues for our events, talk with restaurants and other facilities about hosting us, and coordinate all of the pieces involved in planning the events for our members. This person co-chairs the committee with Caroline Banks, who is primarily responsible for the cultural components of our events. This position automatically holds a seat on the Executive Board. The board meets on the third Tuesday of the month at 6:30pm. Please consider volunteering for this position. If interested, please contact me through the Bella Italia email. Remember to check your email frequently. That is how we communicate with you and save your dues money from being spent on postage. I look forward to seeing you at our activities and events in 2012. The tune is to the left. Thirty days on a steamship to America we've arrived We found neither straw nor hay We slept on bare boards We rested like animals America is long and wide it's circled round with mountains and plains and with the labor of us Italians we built towns and cities and with the labor of us Italians we built towns and cities © Send items for the newsletter to the Bella Italia mailing address or email address. Rome...the Eternal City...to which all roads lead. How often have we heard these words? Rome has been the destination of millions since its founding about 28 centuries ago! But after you've taken in the wonders of the city, both ancient and modern; after you have seen the Papal City of the Vatican, try to get outside into the countryside of Lazio. That's where all the fresh vegetables, cheeses, flowers, and wines come from, and where you can go to relax after the chaos and cacophony of the city. Going southeast, you can wind through the hills of the Colli Albani, a big wine growing area. Castel Gandolfo, the summer retreat of the Pope, is unforgettable, especially for its fountains and man-made waterfalls. Pretty little towns dot the hillsides. If you are interested in Etruscan history, travel northward to the important small city of Viterbo, with Etruscan remains, museums, and a medieval centro storico. Very near Viterbo is a fascinating park filled with huge odd sculptures placed there about 500 years ago. It's called Il Bosco Sacro. For other excellent Roman ruins, spend a day in Ostia Antica, the ancient seaport of Rome, now several kilometers from the Tyrrhenian Sea. At our next Bella Italia event, on April 13, we are offering a food and wine pairing featuring some typical dishes and wines from the Province of Lazio. Do have a look at the menu we're planning when you get your invitation. We hope to see you and your guests there! The Italian American Club of Hilton Head is having their Bocce Tournament on Saturday, April 28. Their Italian Heritage Festival is scheduled for Saturday, September 22. © Prosciutto e Melone Prosciutto and Melon Prosciutto and Melon is a simple and classic Italian combination. Quality ingredients are key here. Use good imported Prosciutto di Parma or if you want to try something different, Prosciutto di San Daniele from the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of Italy. The balsamic vinegar is optional, but does add a nice touch. Please only use it if you have a really good aged balsamic vinegar, not that supermarket balsamic. And remember a little goes a long way. At first glance, this doesn’t seem like much of a recipe, but it really is an awesome combination, perhaps reminding you of something you may not have had in a while. The saltiness of the prosciutto and the sweetness of the cantaloupe really play off of each other. Nothing beats being able to throw something so delicious and satisfying together so quickly. 1 cantaloupe (or honeydew melon, if you prefer) 1/2 pound Prosciutto di Parma, sliced paper thin Balsamic vinegar for drizzling (optional) 1. Cut the melon in half, remove the seeds and slice into 1-inch slices, removing the rind. 2. Wrap each slice of melon in a slice of prosciutto, leaving a little melon showing at the ends. 3. Arrange in serving plates, and drizzle with a few drops of balsamic vinegar, if using, and serve.
