With each run of this show, we realize new significance from the lessons in this story. At the core of this tale about Elphaba and Glinda are simple misunderstandings that lead them on a divisive path. In today’s world, misunderstandings are often at the core of heightened anger, violence, and worse. What we once regarded as the “microwave” society has evolved into a cyber space where people can and do, get away with levels of bullying and mean-spirited opinion that was once unheard of. The effects of these unfiltered actions can be devastating for a young person who has not yet fully developed their confidence, self-esteem, and the understanding of mutual respect. These are often the youth who are discarded and tucked away behind the walls of labels like “at-risk”. Seattle Theatre Group will launch a new program next year designed to address the needs so many of our kids have for support in developing mutual and self-respect, as well as positive life choices. Next June, we launch STG AileyCamp, taking our long-standing relationship with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater to another level, for the kids. AileyCamp uses disciplined dance training, creative writing instruction, personal development and communications workshops to deposit new skills into young people who are traditionally not served in this way. For 6 weeks, youth ages 11-14 will be provided transportation, meals and all camp classes and services at no cost. The camp will take place at the Tukwila Community Center and will serve youth from Seattle, south Seattle, Tukwila, and Tacoma. STG AileyCamp will be the 10th site in the US for this program, which for us will also serve to honor the memory of longtime Ailey leader, STG friend, and Tacoma native, Calvin Hunt. In the popular song Defying Gravity, Elphaba sings, “I’m through accepting limits, cuz someone says they’re so, some things I cannot change, but til I try I’ll never know.” This is our hope for the youth who will be a part of AileyCamp, that they are given the opportunity to direct the course of their lives, and without limits defy gravity and soar! If you’d like to learn more about the Seattle Theatre Group AileyCamp, or lend your support, go to stgpresents.org/education/aileycamp, or contact Maura Ahearne at 206-467-5510, ext. 1148 (mauraa@stgpresents.org) Enjoy the show! A PARTNERSHIP. ANOTHER SUMMIT. I WAS IN REMOTE Patagonia, about to make the climb of my life, but an injured disc in my back was flaring up again. I needed help. Dr. Krabak consulted by email, helping me find safe medications to get the pain under control. Even in that remote part of the world, he was there for me. When I injured my back about five years ago, Dr. Krabak (UW Physician, UW Medical Center) is the reason it didn’t end my career. As a professional climber, there’s rarely a time when I can rest and let myself heal. And because I’m always traveling, regular appointments are nearly impossible. Dr. Krabak understands athletes like me. So he works around my unmanageable schedule and puts his experience to work finding safe and effective ways for me to manage the pain and still pursue my passion. I think of him as my partner as much as my doctor. He’s there for me when I need him, to keep me climbing for as long as I can. GRAMMY® award-winning singer-composerbassist Esperanza (Emily) Spalding has announced her newest project: Emily’s D +Evolution. Rekindling her childhood interest in theater, poetry and movement, this new project delves into a broader concept of performance. Originally conceived the day before her birthday, during a “sleepless night of full moon inspiration”, Emily’s D+Evolution will be performing all new material that Esperanza says “unfolds as live musical vignettes.” “Emily is my middle name, and I’m using this fresh persona as my inner navigator. This project is about going back and reclaiming uncultivated curiosity, and using it as a compass to move forward and expand.” says Spalding. “My hope for this group is to create a world around each song. There are a lot of juicy themes and stories in the music. We will be staging the songs as much as we play them, using characters, video, and the movement of our bodies.” …a light, fizzy, optimistic drive that’s in her melodic bass playing – The New York Times See your favorite American Idols Live! © Christo pher Nelson STG PRESENTS AMERICAN IDOL LIVE! Black Me Out 20 Rickie Lee Jones Chuck E.’s in Love DAKHABRAKHA is a world-music, “ethno chaos” performance ensemble, whose work exists at the crossroads of Ukrainian folklore and theatre. Their name means “give/take” in the old Ukrainian language. The group was created in 2004 by the avant-garde theatre director, Vladyslav Troitsky, and theatre work has left an endelible mark on the band and their performances. DAKHABRAKHA imbues traditional Ukrainian folk melodies with Indian, Arabic, African, Russian, and Australian traditional instrumentation, which, along with their astonishingly powerful and uncompromising vocal range, creates a trans-national sound rooted in Ukrainian culture. 27 Esperanza Spalding Little Fly AUGUST 13 JamesVincentMcMorrow Cavalier SEPTEMBER 12 Noah Gundersen Slow Dancer ON SALE NOW!
