By Risé Hirsch
After building a business, starting a restaurant, and getting three
kids through college, most people would be thinking about
retirement and enjoying the proverbial “fruits of their labor.” If
it was me, I would be lounging in a hammock in Tortuga, drinking rum out of coconuts and finding creative ways to spend my
kids’ inheritance. But for Joseph and Randi Brazen, they’re just
shifting into second gear.
I caught up with the Brazens at the 520 Bar and Grill where we
shared a round of drinks and dished on all the irons they have
in the fire. In case you’re curious, I had a Moscow Mule, Joseph
had a Michelob Ultra, and Randi had a Bud Light. If I had
been a tad smarter I would have added a plate of nachos…obviously, for journalistic purposes.
I WISH THEY ALL COULD BE C ALIFORNIA GIRLS
The beginning of the Brazen story could actually be a movie
script (I’m considering optioning the Lifetime movie rights as
we speak). A real estate visionary from Santa Monica, a young
actress from Studio City, they meet, fall in love, and decide to
get married 10 weeks later. That’s not a misprint; their romance
when from zero to sixty in about the same time it takes the
cable guy to show up and install free HBO.
They were both attending a weekend seminar in LA and as
soon as she walked in the room Joseph knew she was the one.
They got to know each other over the next few days and enjoyed
a couple of dinners. After dating for a few more weeks they
decided to get married. “I called my friends and said ‘what are
you doing Friday? Do you want to come to our wedding?’” She
laughs now as she remembers her friends saying, “Wedding?
Who are you dating??” They just celebrated 30 years in January.
I was curious how this California couple made their way up to
Bellevue. Would you believe a coin flip? They knew they wanted
to raise their family outside of the city and with three girls
under the age of five scampering around it was time. They fell in
love with Bellevue on an earlier trip, so they decided to revisit
the city. During the visit, a good friend of theirs, Howard Brinton, happened to be speaking at Meydenbauer Center. Surprised
to see each other in the same city, they all met for dinner that
night and breakfast the following morning. During both events

the conversations were consumed debating the pros and cons of uprooting from
California and moving to Bellevue.
As they were leaving the restaurant,
Howard signaled a cab for the airport
and turned and said, “‘I’m tired of you
guys whining.” He took a quarter out of
his pocket and said, “Heads you’re gonna
move to Bellevue and start your life
here and tails forget about this fantasy
and stay in California.” He flipped the
quarter and had Randi and Joseph call
it in the air. They both yelled, “Heads!”
Howard grabbed the quarter in midair and put it into his pocket and just
said, “The decision is done.” Joseph and
Randi just looked at each other and said,
“Well, what was it???” Howard replied,
“It doesn’t matter, you’ve made your decision.” They went back to California and
put their house on the market and moved
to Bellevue one month later.
NE W PLACES AND FRESH FACES
The Brazen name has historically been
associated with luxury real estate. When
Sotheby’s was looking for a Washington
real estate partner to represent their iconic brand, they asked The Brazen Group to
come on board. Joseph’s company became
the first Sotheby’s partner in Washington
State. “This was a real game changer,”
Joseph said. This all transpired in the
midst of the housing market crash when
the word “luxury” was scarcely mentioned. Although challenging, Joseph and
his real estate crew persevered.
Within the last year, the Brazens opened
up their second location and after a huge
recruiting binge, doubled the number
of agents on the Brazen Sotheby’s team.
With last year’s growth of 102 percent
and an impressive caché of real estate talent, it appears the team has found their
groove and a nice little formula for success. For updated details on the market,
you can always check out Randi’s “Luxury

PLAYING WITH FIRE
Guess who’s celebrating 10 years? (Besides my 29th birthday)
The 520 Bar and Grill has been the favorite meeting place for
Eastsiders for over a decade! Personally, I consider the 520 “The
Cheers of Bellevue.” Each time I open the door I expect to hear
someone yell, “Norm!” and pour me a beer. During a trip to
Ireland the Brazens fell in love with Dublin’s legendary Temple
Bar District and were inspired to open a place in Bellevue that
offered the same neighborhood vibe, a comfortable space that
welcomed everyone. Without any restaurant experience and
using their favorite pub as inspiration, the 520 Bar and Grill
was born. Randi remembers Joseph saying, “You know, if doesn’t
work out one day we can just put a sign on the door that says
‘Gone Fishin’.” Lucky for us, that sign has yet to materialize.
Although originally slated to be called, Main Street Pub, they
gravitated toward 520 which is a real estate term referencing
everything between the three freeways…you know, like the center of the city, and it couldn’t be more apropos. Voted “Best Bar
on the Eastside” by 425 Magazine and “Best Casual Meeting
Place” by the Bellevue Downtown Association, I think the Brazens’ dream of bringing an Irish pub to Bellevue has successfully
come to fruition.
With no signs of slowing down, Joseph and Randi just
announced the opening of their new restaurant located at the
the foot of the W Hotel which will be part of the Lincoln
Square expansion. The name and details are still under construction, but with 3700 square feet to play with we can only imagine
great things. Joseph recently stated, “Our new concept in the
Lincoln Square expansion location will capture that same flavor,
but its design and vibe will take into consideration the worldwide travelers, upscale shoppers and guests as well as the young,
vibrant nightlife that is now prevalent in downtown Bellevue.”
The restaurant will also provide a private entrance for people
living in the residential towers and will also include an outdoor
patio for dining. The only question left is when is the grand
opening and who’s taking my reservation?
FULL HOUSE
Between two Brazen Sotheby’s offices, two Bellevue restaurants, three daughters and a crew of golden retrievers at home,
I’m not sure the word “retirement” is even in their vocabulary.
I think the only time Joseph and Randi actually slow down is
when they are doing hot yoga, which they do together daily
at 6:00a.m. Joseph’s alarm goes off at…wait for it…5:20 each
morning. I thought he was kidding. He smiled and showed me
his alarm. He wasn’t kidding. As we wrapped up our interview,
I asked him what it was like living with four women. Randi
laughs and says, “Joe, you know, like having five bathrooms but
all the girls are in one!” and Joseph starts laughing and recaps
his most recent Father’s Day. “All the girls were in town for the
weekend and they’d only get ready together…and only in the
master bathroom! I walked in and it was like a Victoria’s Secret
with all the lingerie, makeup, and shoes everywhere!”
Watching them beam with pride as they talked about their
daughters was charming. Randi describes her girls as, “One
who wants to rule the world, one who wants to heal the world,
and one who wants to save the world,” which is a great analogy when you consider their professions. Joey, the saver, worked
for Teach for America and is currently teaching for an at-risk
school in Dallas. Cody, the healer, works for Hyperice which is
a company that develops sports recovery equipment, while Taylor, the ruler extraordinaire, is pursuing the family business and
recently joined her mom and dad on the Brazen Sotheby’s team.
They’re a close-knit group; it was nice to see the genuine pleasure that surfaced whenever they spoke about family.
WITHOUT FURTHER ADO
As I wrapped up the interview and thanked Joseph and Randi
for their time, I left the restaurant knowing this: The Brazens
believe in Bellevue. They don’t just say it, they show it. Besides
making their home here, they’ve raised three great kids via
our Bellevue public schools, built several businesses that support the local economy and dedicate themselves to non-profits,
like Lifespring, that directly supports Bellevue families. It was
refreshing to know I have them in my community corner.
The Brazens are dedicated to making Bellevue the best neighborhood, and it shows.

remove the paper from between the pizza and the stone. If
you leave the parchment paper in for whole time, it will start
to burn and crumble. Bake the pizza for a total of 10-12
minutes, using a peel to carefully remove them from the
oven. This method also works if you would like to use your
grill instead of the oven. I use my baking stone on my grill
just the same as I do in my oven.
PIZZ A SAUCE
Yield: 2 cups
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 large shallot, minced
3 cloves garlic, minced
Pinch of dried red pepper flakes
½ teaspoon dried oregano
1 14-ounce can tomato puree
Kosher salt and fresh ground pepper
Chef Barbara’s
recipe of the month
HOMEMADE PIZZA
September is a time when nights start to
get a bit cooler and the days start to get a bit
shorter. School starts back up and our days
get crammed with the multitude of activities
that go with it but why order pizza when you
can make your own with ease it any flavor
of your choosing – sometimes those choices
are dictated by what we have on hand but
they can also be dictated by where our daily
travels take us. Today, I passed great mussels
at the market and voila!
PIZZA DOUGH
Makes: 4 10-inch pizzas
2 teaspoons active dry yeast (or one
packet)
1 cup warm water
1 teaspoon kosher salt
3 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for
dusting
2 tablespoons olive oil, plus more for coating
In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a
dough hook, add the water and yeast and
allow the yeast to bloom or foam for a few
minutes. Add the salt and flour and mix
together on medium-low speed until the
ingredients come together. You may need
to scrape the sides of the bowl to bring the
ingredients together. Drizzle in the olive oil
and knead the dough for about 5 minutes
– it should be smooth, come away clean
from the bowl and have a bit of stretch to
it. Oil a clean bowl at least twice as large
as the dough and transfer the dough to it.
Cover with plastic wrap and let rise overnight or all day in the fridge or for about
an hour on the counter. The dough can sit
on the counter for longer than an hour, but
no more than four. Preheat your oven and
baking stone to 450⁰F. If you don’t have a
baking stone and are using a baking sheet,
no need to preheat the baking sheet.
Scrape the dough from the bowl and
turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead gently a few times and
divide the dough into four equal pieces.
I like to press and stretch the dough
out gently with my fingers, but some
are more comfortable rolling it out.
Whatever you choose. Since I use a
baking stone, I build my pizza on a
piece of parchment paper placed on top
of a pizza peel. The parchment paper
allows the pizza to slide right onto
the stone from the peel without using
cornmeal or any other nonsense that
will burn or make a mess of your oven.
After building my pizza, I like to brush
to outer crust with a bit of olive oil to
keep it moist. After transferring the
pizza to the oven, allow the pizzas to
bake 4-5 minutes to allow the bottom
of the crust to form, and then carefully
Heat the oil in a small sauce pan. Sauté the shallot until translucent. Add the garlic, pepper flakes and oregano. Cook until
fragrant, about a minute. Add the tomato puree and heat until
bubbly. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Remove from heat
17
and allow to cool. This will keep in the fridge for at least a week
and can also be frozen.
THE PIZZA SHOWN:
1 pound fresh mussels, cleaned and de-bearded
½ pound calamari rings
1 tablespoon olive oil, plus more for garnish
1 tablespoon lemon juice
½ cup fresh basil
1 lemon for garnish
Sea salt
If you are using frozen calamari, thaw completely and pat dry.
Toss the calamari with the olive oil, lemon juice and season
lightly with salt and pepper. Divide the calamari and mussels
evenly between the 4 pizzas, placing the mussels facing upward
if possible. Bake at 450⁰F for 10-12 minutes. Discard any
mussels that do no open and garnish with torn bits of basil, a
squeeze of fresh lemon and a light sprinkling of sea salt.

Did you know one in every five kids in the Bellevue School District is living in poverty and at risk of hunger? This risk increases
during breaks when students don’t have access to the nutrition
they would usually receive through school meals.
Over 80,000 meals were provided to Bellevue’s kids thanks to the
support raised at the 2014 Wine at its Best event. Wine at its Best
provides an essential opportunity to raise funds for the program and
educate people about the hunger happening in their community.
Be ready to put your five S’s to the test when you join your
friends, colleagues and Points neighbors on Saturday, October
10. It will be a memorable evening of community, finely-crafted
wines and incredible cuisine, all raising money for a great cause.

COMPUTER SCIENCE
IN BELLEVUE SCHOOLS
Now Bellevue Schools Foundation donors will take technology
education to the next level with an exciting new computer science
pilot. Recognizing the need for all students to receive computer
science education within the core math and science curriculum, as
well as additional elective choices, the Foundation is launching a
new computer science initiative. Teachers in classrooms across the
district will participate in the pilot, with the goal of achieving an
aligned K-12 curriculum within three years.
Students will learn computer science concepts beginning in
elementary school and will tackle increasingly complex challenges as they reach middle and high school. Partnerships with
Code.org and TechSmartKids will provide critical support for
curriculum and teacher training.
Within the local economy, there is huge demand for computerscience-educated graduates and the need is only expected to
continue to grow in coming years. Computer science is an
established discipline at the collegiate level, but the integration
of computer science into K-12 curriculum has not kept pace.
Thanks to the Bellevue community, Bellevue students will soon
have access to high-quality computer science education and be
well-prepared for success in future careers of their choosing.
Want to learn more about how you
can help make this possible? Contact Bellevue Schools Foundation at
info@bsfdn.org or 425-456-4199. Points-area trustees Tobey
Bryant, Bill DeJarlais, Jill Heijer, Lynn Janata, Karl Korsmo,
Heija Nunn, Bill Pollard, Kea Rensch, and Ronna Weltman
can also provide more details.

There’s no denying it – kids are excited about technology. Bellevue Schools Foundation’s elementary STEM initiative got
started with a pilot at three schools, including Medina Elementary, and will be bringing STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) into Bellevue schools for a third year this fall. In
2015-16 every elementary student in Bellevue will have access
to STEM education during the school day and through afterschool robotics clubs. The cross-curricular effort incorporates
the arts and other disciplines through activities such as 3D
printing, programming kinetic sculptures, and applying evidence-based reasoning to writing assignments. Bellevue School
District is one of the only districts in the state providing this
level of comprehensive STEM education.

Free Fitness Classes!
Meet local Medina resident, 16-year-old Niki Amini-Naieni.
Throughout my life my parents have always supported an active
lifestyle. They signed me up for swim team, cross country, fencing,
yoga and water polo. Despite the situation or goal, my family never
fails to be there when I succeed or help me recover after I’ve fallen.
PL: What made you want to start your own fitness classes?
Last year I participated in high school cross country. I grew very
passionate about the sport and eventually injured myself. I was
devastated after I found out that I could not continue the activity. In an attempt to stay in shape I started taking yoga classes.
Although I started yoga in order to stay in shape, I began to do
it because I loved how relaxing and fulfilling it was. After practicing for a year, I wanted to spread the benefits of yoga and in
general working out. I tried to convince my friends and family
to sign up for classes also. However, many of them replied stating that the classes were either too expensive or too difficult to
attend. I use yoga as an escape and release of anxiety and stress.
I hoped to make it possible for anyone who truly wanted to
participate. Therefore, I decided to start holding free yoga and
workout classes in nearby areas all over Medina. In the end,
yoga can be accessible to anyone near Medina that is interested.
PL: What kind of workouts do you teach?
I teach yoga, biking, running and workout classes for people 16
years and older. For people under sixteen I teach yoga and running classes. The type of class, location and time vary based on
the schedule. I try to incorporate variety in type and location of
the workout in order to add to the quality of the exercise and to
create an exciting experience.
PL: Where do you meet and how often?
The classes are held all over Medina. In the summer the over sixteen classes are held daily and the under sixteen classes are held
on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. In September the class schedule
may change. The details on time, place and type are posted on
my blog, healthilyfree.blogspot.com. If you would like to attend
a class please email me (at least 10 hours in advance) with your
name and phone number. Also, include the class that you plan on
coming for. My email is nikicucumber@gmail.com.
PL: What are your long term goal and aspirations?
I aspire to make exercise something people look forward to
and not an experience that is dreaded. I also hope to make yoga
accessible to anyone despite their situation.
PL: Who inspires you?
I am inspired by my mother because she is so hard working and
passionate. She has taught me to go after any goal or achievement without placing limits on the possibilities. I am also
inspired by my twin sister who always reminds me that I can do
anything at any age or time in my life.

Steve
ALL ABOUT
Steve Campbell, Bellevue High School alum, is kind, friendly
and touches everyone’s heart with his warm smile friendly personality. He loves music, photographs, local sports and meeting
new friends. Steve recently participated as a bowler in the Special Olympics and also enjoys golf and playing basketball.
He has been working at Bellevue High for the past eight years.
His two-hour shift four days a week helps give him a sense of
pride and community. Steve helps with everything from dusting the library, helping in the kitchen, taking out the trash and
above all making those around him feel good. Even though he
can’t talk, Steve communicates with gestures and some sign language. He hears and understands everything you ask or tell him,
he simply has a different way of processing information.
Getting paid for his hard work gives him a source of pride.
When financial cuts eliminated his wages, Steve stayed on
as a volunteer. He did not want to give up being productive
and interactive.
Unfortunately, funding support for paying Steve’s salary is running out. Two years ago, PTSA worked together with BHS
administration and Maggie Weed, Steve’s Employment Consultant, to financially support Steve.
Having a steady job in the high-energy environment of the
high school has meant a lot to Steve. He appreciates being a
welcomed and respected part of the community. His presence
and work ethic have also had a positive impact on the students
themselves. Just ask former BHS student, Henry Roberts.
Last semester Henry was working with Steve as a Student Aid.
The partnership allowed Henry to really get to know Steve and
gain a sense of perspective. “Working with Steve has been an
honor and a privilege,” explained Henry. “Steve has taught me
the best lesson I could ever learn. Every person has value and no
matter what life throws at you, make the best of it and be grateful for everything you have.”
Sometimes the most important lessons learned at school take
place outside the classroom. If you would like to support Steve’s
continued employment at BHS, please make a donation today.
Meets Steve Campbell, that is, if you don’t
already know him.
Steve sincerely cares about people;
everybody is his friend.
We need your help again. Please donate today to help Steve
continue his work at BHS. Please make checks payable to “Bellevue High School” and include Steve Campbell’s name in the
memo. Donations can be brought to the Accounting Window
or mailed to: BHS c/o Accountant, 10416 SE Wolverine Way,
Bellevue, WA 98004. Donations are tax deductible.
Steve is an extremely perceptive person. According to his
cousin Brad, “He recognizes when people are sad and has the
ability to feel pain and sadness for them. I’ll never forget the
time he cried when he saw my leg in a cast after I broke it.”

Alexandria Nicole Cellars
By Jenny Hart Danowski | Photos by Randell Walton
We recently joined 15 of our fantastic
residents and sponsors for an afternoon
of complimentary wine tasting and
appetizers at Alexandria Nicole Cellars’
private tasting room in the Hollywood
Schoolhouse. Kristine Bono, whose titles
include “Winery Evangelist, Wine Club
Concierge, and Keg Slinging Queen,”
hosted the event along with her amazing staff. She can’t say enough about the
quality of the wines here and the amazing owners, Jarrod and Ali Boyle, who
started it all. “Jarrod began his career in
diversified farming, and then got into
viticulture working as a vineyard scout for
Hogue Cellars,” she explains. On one of
his scouting trips to eastern Washington,
he noticed a rocky, barren hill right off
the road. While standing there looking at
it, his old high school friend, Rob Mercer
of Mercer Estates Winery, drove by and
asked what he was doing. He said, “I see
my dream.” As luck would have it, Rob’s
parents owned the land and were getting
ready to sell, so Jarrod got the money
together and partnered with them for the
first planting.
When they broke ground in 1998 on
Jarrod’s 30th, he and Ali intended to be
growers rather than winemakers. They
were celebrating their destiny, so they
named the vineyard “Destiny Ridge.” It
sits on the north crest of the Columbia
River in the Horse Heaven Hills AVA
(American Viticultural Area)--which is
the second largest AVA in Washington.
About 34 percent of the fruit that goes
into production for Washington wines
comes from there. They started with some
Syrah and a little Viognier, and in 2001,
the first fruit was ready. Jarrod said to
Ali, “Let’s keep a little bit, make a little
wine, and celebrate! We’ll see what our
vineyard is doing!” In 2003, he shared
some of his wine from that first fruit, and
everyone loved it! That’s when he decided
to start Alexandria Nicole Cellars, naming it after his wife. Today, they are one of
a mere 5 percent of Washington wineries
that can call themselves an estate winery,
meaning all of their wines are made with
the fruit from their own vineyard. With
over 800 Washington wineries, that is
saying something!
“Jarrod wants his wines to be authentic to
his vineyard, approachable, and structured
for ageability,” says Kristine. It’s all about
the three A’s. Being an estate winery
allows him to control the process from
grape to glass, so he has the flexibility to
pick and choose the best fruit and the
best wines to produce each year. With
263 planted acres and 23 planted varietals, that‘s a lot of flexibility! While you’d
expect him to have quite an ego given
the many awards his wines have received,
the first name he lists on every bottle is
When designing their Prosser tasting room, Jarrod made a room
off the back into a secret wine club, complete with a private
entrance hidden behind a built-in bookcase. “Everyone wanted
to join the club just so they could get into that room!” laughs
Kristine. In 2007 they opened a tasting room in Woodinville
and, after operating from a few different warehouse district
locations, later came across the space in the Hollywood Schoolhouse. Working with the chef there allows them to now provide
food as well. One of their wine club members built the gorgeous
bar areas, and Jarrod brought in wine barrel furnishings made
by his vineyard workers during the off season. He even created
a stone-faced hidden door into the wine club room that looks
like part of the wall! That’s where we were entertained, and we
all had a ball!
Lisa James said, “The wine was fabulous, and Kristine did an
amazing job of telling the story of the winemaker and the pride
he feels about his product.” Trish Carpenter agreed, saying, “The
presentation today was outstanding, and I thoroughly enjoyed
the wines that we sampled! I am actually walking away today
with a case of the Crawford’ Viognier, and some bottles of the
Affinity Albarino and the Jet Black Syrah, which were all fantastic. I had a wonderful time!” Jennifer Fischer said, “What a
wonderful afternoon! The company was fabulous, the winery
was so welcoming and so open to us, and it was such a big supporter of Bellevue LifeSpring. I’m so grateful to them for hosting us and for sharing their fabulous wine with us!” And finally,
Darci Blair got clever with her wording saying, “A ‘hidden’ gem
of Woodinville, this ‘almost’ classy winery is definitely worth it!”
For tasting room hours and wine club information (including
details on the two new Tiny Houses they have available for rent
at their vineyard for their wine club members), go to www.alexandrianicolecellars.com. The club room can be rented for private
events, accommodating 75 (winter) to 100 (summer with the
patio seating included).

US VIRGIN ISLANDS
By N2 Staff Writer,
Tracy LaFon
St. Thomas
The most developed and tourist friendly of the three islands is
St. Thomas. Its port provides docking for all the major cruise
lines and is the destination day trip for their passengers. It is
an island bustling with activity and adventure. St. Thomas is
famous for both its diving expeditions and fishing excursions
along with world-renowned nightlife. In a single day, one can
enjoy the beach, land the biggest fish of their life, stock up on
unique gifts, enjoy a meal by sunset and then dance the salsa
under the Caribbean stars. St. Thomas is considered the best
priced of the three islands and the most popular destination
because of its variety of Caribbean offerings.
St. Croix
The largest in area, St. Croix is actually the least frequented of
the three islands, but don’t let that fool you. Because of its size,
it has miles of pristine beaches that allow enjoyment without
feeling over-crowded. It is a delightful island for the family, as
the focus is more on relaxation, culture and history, than enticing nightlife. The accommodations are less tourist-oriented and
lean more towards villa and bed-and-breakfast styles of lodging.
Steeped in history, this island is a unique blend of European,
African and Caribbean culture. Exploring the island can be done
independently or by way of guided horseback outings, safaris,
historical tours, as well as snorkeling, sailing or boat excursions.
Call us for your free estimate 206.682.7110
St. John
Known as much for its natural beauty as it is for its modern
accommodations and amenities, St. John is a perfect blend of
the other two islands. It hosts the widest selection of accommodations, from upscale resorts, to traditional hotels, to camping sites and wilderness lodging. A good portion of the island
is designated as a National Park. If you are looking to hike and
photograph the beauty of vibrant flowers, birds and wildlife, the
tropical surroundings offer it all. St. John’s beaches are a nautical
cornucopia offering relaxing surf on unspoiled sand where one
can also sail, snorkel or enjoy exploring the underwater coral
reef trail at Trunk Bay.
Decide what your island fantasy vacation requires and then consider one or all of these American islands; you won’t be disappointed.
