The Juniper Story
As anyone who has ever travelled east of the
Cascades knows, juniper is prevalent in
Oregon's high desert. Juniper is an ancient
species that has been part of our landscape
for millennia, but recently it has enjoyed
unprecedented population growth due to
human interference with the natural fire cycle
that used to keep young juniper trees in
check.
How much population growth? A lot...
Eastern Oregon's juniper has increased from
about 1 million acres in the 1930's to more
than 6 million acres today.
Juniper's success means additional
challenges to the grasses and other plants
that compete for space on the desert plains.
Not only is there more competition for
sunlight, but juniper is a thirsty tree and
significantly depletes the groundwater table.
The reduction in grasses results in increased
erosion, reduced biodiversity, and more
difficulty for desert wildlife to find the
foraged foods on which they depend for
survival.
In an attempt to restore the native grasslands,
Eastern Oregon ranchers have for many years
cut the trees and burned them, but today
Sustainable Northwest and other dedicated
groups are working hard to create new
markets for the juniper wood to ensure that
this useful and beautiful wood is put to use.
This restoration work helps enable the
grasslands to recover and helps keep Eastern
Oregon sawmills, an important source of jobs
in rural communities, running and generating
income for these communities. In general,
the trees that are cut and milled as part of
this restoration work are smaller, younger
trees that have sprouted in the years since
our fire restriction policies have been formed
-- the older, grander trees that predate these
policies aren't cut.
Our Restoration Juniper Landscaping Timbers are
an ideal replacement for pressure-treated lumber
for landscaping and gardening applications
including raised beds, arbors, play structures, and
agriculture. Once installed, this low-cost solution
promises decades of beauty and performance
without the addition of any chemicals.
Juniper's legendary durability comes from its high
content of natural aromatic oils. Similar to cedar and
redwood, these oils prevent the microbial decay
that causes wood to rot. Juniper, however, lasts
much longer than cedar or redwood, up to 30 years
or more in ground contact applications.
Many vineyards are discovering juniper posts as an
organic, chemical-free, long-lasting solution to
support their vines.
A to Z Wineworks, the largest wine producer in
Oregon, recently switched out their old trellis posts
and replaced them with new juniper posts at their
vineyards. Many growers are swapping juniper for
pressure-treated wood to reduce the chemical
contamination of the soils while ensuring that the
posts--and their investment in them--endure for
many years.

Mead Clark in a #2 Rustic/Landscaping
grade, which typically includes some bark on
each piece (live edge) as well as knots and
other typical juniper character.

100% plantation-grown Radiata pine for consistent quality and performance. Our face
veneers are peeled from pruned logs - making AraucoPly Sanded panels among the
highest graded AC products on the market today and delivering the warmth of natural
wood to your projects. AraucoPly Sanded Panels are finished with 150-grit sanding on
the face and 120-grit on the back. The ultra-smooth finish is an excellent choice for a
multitude of applications. All grade-stamped AraucoPly Sanded Panels are manufactured
in accordance with the US PS1-09 product standard, and all ACX and BCX products are
PS1-09 underlayment compliant and are edge stamped as such by TECO.

location to the to the laser via radio frequency,
signaling the laser to automatically pivot on
"Point A" to find "Point B". As soon as this
connection is established, the laser locks into

laser receiver.
