A Jolly Girafe in flight for the 42nd Coupe Icare...
The 42nd edition of the Coupe Icare will be held Thursday September 17 to
Sunday September 20th, 2015 on the sites of Saint-Hilaire-du-Touvet/Lumbin in
the Isère, just a 30 minute drive from Grenoble and Chambéry.
Born in 1974 in Saint-Hilaire-du-Touvet in the magnificent Chartreuse mountain
range, the Coupe Icare today attracts close to 10,000 free flyers from all corners
of the earth and over 200 professional exhibitors, one more passionate than
the other over a full range of ultra light air sports : paragliding, hang gliding,
paramotor, ULM, hot air balloons RC aircraft, etc.
90,000 spectators also participate is this great annual, international free
flight meet and get high just by witnessing the incredible aerobatic feats and
applauding the famous costumed flight contest, and watching the selected films
for the international free flight film festival, not to mention partaking in the
surprising street animations and exciting activities for people of all ages!
Nearly 1000 volunteers are mobilized for the organization of this not-to-be
missed four day event every September that invites the public to dream of
flying like Icarus. Spectators are wide-eyed watching pilots whose amazing
creativity or feats continuously push the limits. Professionals and amateur
free flyers worldwide make their way to the Coupe Icare to display, share, try,
test or promote their different disciplines. Many come to present their lastest
technological advances, to show their scientific or poetic inventions, and to
participate in aerial shows with some of the world’s top performers. Major
French and European ultra light air sports federations are also on site ready to
answer questions from pilots of all feathers and future members.
Beyond fantasy...
Since its birth, the Coupe Icare has endeavored to cultivate originality, daring and marginality within a highly festive and wellchoreographed framework. The purpose of the event is principally to bring together free flying sportsmen of all disciplines in the realm
of ultra light air sports (considered extreme sports). It is entirely enriched by the orchestration of extraordinary, inspiring and colorful
shows both in the air and on the ground.
This year’s poster once again designed by Valérie Dumas is of a gorgeous Jolly Girafe in flight. Undoubtedly it will incite some crazy
I-carnaval costuming.
The spirit of the Coupe Icare is contagious and everywhere!
The world’s largest
paragliding
and ultra light
air sports event
For example : a group of pilot friends on the other side of the world couldn’t make the event, so they
organized a costumed flight gathering in honor of the Coupe Icare, in New Caledonia.
For the past two years, selected Icares of Cinema films have been on tour in theaters throughout
France, thanks to the collaboration of regional free flight leagues and departmental committees.
The official film of the 41st Coupe Icare, along with a selection of prized films at Saint-Hilaire last
September, was projected during free open sessions before the general public.
Cinematographic exchanges are developing especially since 2014 with the introduction of a « carte
blanche » entry to an international film festival combining ultra light air sports, mountaineering, pure
adventure and extreme sports...
