August 2013 Greetings I can hardly believe that here we are, already in August, and the excitement is mounting for our annual Prowl. A lot has been planned and we are praying for better weather than last year when we were all held up in the snow. I think last year’s Prowl will be the most remembered of all with all the snow drama and road blocks etc. which nearly caused it to be cancelled, and then, it turned out to be one of the best ever! PLEASE don’t forget, all prowlers, we need your indemnities and driver and medical info handed in BEFORE we leave, so please get cracking and get all that stuff filled in now and have it ready to avoid delays. These are SAVVA requirements. Many thanks to all those who have contributed with prizes and assisted with extra items . This all adds to the whole atmosphere and excitement of the Prowl. Please check your cars and carry a fire extinguisher. Ken, our President, is still trying to get a flight back, so I hope he makes it in time! Finally, the Scottburgh car show is already behind us and went down very well. Well done to Peter Fielding for organizing such a good event which is growing every year. This one was without a doubt, the biggest and best so far. DECC had a good turnout. The date of this event also did not clash with any other club activities this time, so it opened it up for greater participation for all. I have featured some photos in this edition. Rich. PRESIDENT’S PERSPECTIVE Hi Guys, it would appear that a good AGM was had by one and all and lovely to see the committee has some new members aboard. Congrats to all of you. I’m sure you will all do a wonderful job and hope you stay on the committee for many years. Once again, welcome aboard. Well Eileen and I are still in the U.K. and having a lovely time visiting car museums, old country houses and friends and relatives. We went up to the Peak District last week via Chesterfield, which is a town just past Sheffield and the focal point is the church spire that is twisted through about 45 deg. But is still fairly upright and it is thought that the reason for the twist is the 600 ton weight of LEAD tiles being supported by wooden timbers that were still green when the spire was erected sometime in the 18th century. Fascinating. We stopped in at a little town called Matlock and they have a cable car going from the outskirts of the town then across the town centre and the river and up to the top of a fair sized hill. Lot’s to see and do there as well because it used to be a lead mine. Then it was back to Birmingham to drop off Eileen with our friend Olive where E is going to look after her for a while as she is not well at all. She has been suffering with flu since just after we arrived and as she is 84 and as her and E.T. have been friends for over 40 years it was decided that Harvey will care for her until she is better as her daughter works from 6.30 to 6.30 every day. Anyway, enough of that. Today I had lunch with a friend from SA, that is over here promoting Rovos Rail, which is claimed to be the world’s most luxurious railway. I asked if they did tours of the main terminus and was advised that it could be arranged if we had enough members interested. All we have to do is make up a group, find some accommodation in or near Pretoria, send him our proposed dates and he would set it up. Check out the website on Google under Rovos Rail and let me know what you think. A lot of people are donating their late partners’ memorabilia to them so a lovely museum is building up aswell. As much as I have tried I have been unable to visit the Haynes Museum down in the bottom left hand corner of England. I was actually on the way there one day but exited left to the Aviation Museum on the way and then the Sammy Miller Motorcycle Museum. I even met Sammy Miller himself when he was outside his workshop and running up a twin cylinder bike the make of which I couldn’t see as it had no petrol tank fitted, only a bottle of petrol. He was revving it up to about 12,000 by the sound of it. That was an education in itself and I spent so much time wandering in and out, and in and out again, there that there was no way I was going to get to Haynes Museum as well that day. Oh well, next time maybe? Sorry Barbs! On the way back to my son’s house I also stopped off in Gosport where they had a Submarine Museum where I went on the last of the WW II subs and had a guided tour by the chap who was a chef on the same boat so he could show us his own bunk, kitchen etc. Unreal. I also took the family down to Portsmouth to see the remains of the Mary Rose, King Henry VIII’s personal warship, that sank in about 1560 and was only raised about 450 years later and has been preserved in the condition that it would have been in when it sank. It wasn’t damaged at all because it just capsized due to the terrific weight of the upper deck cannons when it tried to turn around and it lay on it’s side sinking deeper and deeper into the mud that preserved it for all those years so only one side of the ship remains. Very interesting. Looks like you all enjoyed the Emoyeni, Scottburgh Classic Car Show and Vryheid Car Show events. Next up is the Heritage Prowl and as I now have an air ticket for July 29th I can rest easy that I know I will be there. All the best until then. K.T. (xcc+bw) SOUTH AFRICAN ADVERTS FROM YESTERYEAR THE SCOTTBURGH RUN DOWN THE SOUTH COAST A BLESSING IN DISGUISE…. The run down the south coast on Sunday 21st July to the Scottburgh car show began with a bit of a damper, when Peter and Alison’s magnificent Studebaker Daytona had a fanbelt problem. On closer inspection we noticed that the front part of the pulley on the alternator had completely sheered off! This was a freak incident that I must admit I had never seen before and took everyone by surprise. The car could not be driven as the belt drives the waterpump and the alternator. Sadly, it was decided to have the car taken back on a flatbed immediately, as one cannot leave a car like this in unknown hands. Although Pete and Alison missed the show, we felt this was a bit of a blessing in disguise as it would have been a lot more serious if it had happened on the Prowl. The rest of us continued on to the show where we saw a huge variety of different vehicles. It was Jaguar day and we viewed some very fine examples of this marque, including Tom’s spotless Mk 1 2.4 and Steves beautiful E- Type. Some highlights were Peter Fielding’s XK 140, A Magnificent replica SS100 and a C type. Besides the Jags there was so much more to see, from motor cycles, vintages, modern cars, street rods to blow your mind , kids paradise play area, plenty to eat, including a full lunch at the Country club if you so desired., and even a mini steam train running around the entire area for kids rides. There were also model car stands and prizes galore! All in all, a very well put together function with proceeds going to various charities making it all the more worthwhile. Annual general meeting 14 july 2013 The AGM went very well and we were pleased to welcome our new chairman, Alan Evans and Steve & Elsabe Nel as events organisers. The AGM was a huge success with some new committee members being voted in. We are pleased to welcome Alan Evans as our new Chairman and Clare who will be helping on Events. Steve and Elsabe Nell will be on Events which is great news. Congratulations to all and welcome aboard. Jack remains Vice chairman and Nita, Treasurer. Elsabe will also be Secretary. I will continue to do the newsletter with Shirley’s help while I will also take on the “Greetings” panel and try to live up to the high standard set by Tim which leaves me rather busy with some big boots to fill.. Thanks to all those who help on the committee in the background as well. SCOTTBURGH CAR SHOW 21 JULY 2013 FOR SALE One set of brand new hub caps for 1928 Dodge. What reasonable offers? PETROL ADDITIVES A reader asked about using unleaded petrol in his totally original, low mileage Triumph Herald. Answer below. Using a lead replacement additive is an acceptable way to protect your Herald’s head, however, valve seat recession is a slow burning problem that only happens over high mileages. So given the light use your car receives, it’ll take DECADES for any negative effects to occur. So why not run without additives, save the cash you would have spent and have the hardened valve seats installed later when you HAVE to take the head off! July 2013 Practical Classics SOME OF AMERICA’S MOST INNOVATIVE CARS EVER BUILT... 1912 CADILLAC Two major advances set Cadillac apart from the rest in 1912 by inventing the self starter and electric lamps. The self starter eliminated the labour and dangerous task involved with crank starting. This now opened the door wide for women drivers who until now, had little desire to fuss with manual starting. Using the Delco system, electric starters and electric lamp systems were fitted to every Cadillac for the first time complete with an electric tail lamp. Within a couple of years though, all other major makes had followed and made these standard features. Cadillac were aware this would happen and quickly introduced their new V8 engine, the first V8 to be successfully mass produced. SOME OF AMERICA’S MOST INNOVATIVE CARS EVER BUILT... 1929 CORD Although not a new idea, Cord introduced their successful front wheel drive car in 1929, the L-29. Built on experience gained from Indianapolis 500, it offered less weight, with a lower centre of gravity and superior handling. The concept was brilliant, but the timing was bad as the stock market crashed around this time and unfortunately killed its production in 1932 1934 CHRYSLER AIRFLOW Probably one of the most significant cars built, when it comes to technical innovation. It was the first mass produced car to employ a unit-body platform, welded to a steel cage, making it a single integral unit. The futuristic aerodynamic lines were ahead of their time though, and not well received, and sadly, production ceased in 1937. Ironically, it is one of the most sought after collector’s cars today! 9-12th AUGUST 2013 PROWL Well guys....it is here at last!!
