Partnership With Israel creates people-to-people relationships among Israeli and Diaspora Jews through professional and cultural exchanges. The Federation and 13 other Central Region U.S. Jewish federations are in partnership with the Western Galilee. In January, the Federation sponsored a month-long externship at Western Galilee Hospital for two medical students at Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine. In 2009, Partnership expanded to include Budapest, Hungary. Shown here in August 2009 is Dayton Partnership Chair Irvin Moscowitz meeting young Jewish adults in Budapest. Community Collaboratives Rabbi Hillel Fox of Beth Jacob Congregation was one of several area rabbis and Judaic scholars to lead classes for adults on Nov. 15 at Hillel Academy as part of the Annual Pearl Joffe Memorial Day of Jewish Learning. The Federation also facilitates community-wide events such as the annual Yom Hashoah Observance, Israel Independence Celebration, and J-Serve, a day of community service for area Jewish teenagers. Women’s Philanthropy for Tzedakah empowers the women of our Jewish community through personal and leadership training to benefi t themselves, their families and the Jewish world. Shown here, at a Lion of Judah party to kick off the 2009 Jewish Film Festival are (L to R): Teri German, Wendi Pavlofsky, and Patti Schear. Melinda Doner is Women’s Philanthropy for Tzedakah chair. Federation establishes archives In 2009, with Federation’s centennial a year away, professional archivist Pam Schwartz (L) — shown here with Wright State graduate intern Jenna Edwards — stepped up as a volunteer to establish the Federation’s fi rst formal archives, at the Federation’s downtown offi ce. Keeping the community informed Now in its 15th year of publication, The Dayton Jewish Observer received fi rst- and second-place awards in 2009 from the Ohio Society of Professional Journalists. Larry Klaben is chair of The Observer. The community also receives YJN weekly e-news and a bi-monthly YJN brochure. Federation’s Web site, updated daily, received more than 40,000 unique visitors in 2009. JewishDayton.org Jewish Agency for Israel Our United Jewish Campaign dollars support programs around the world that need our help, including providing services to the elderly, supplying food and medicine, building Jewish communal infrastructures, and providing Jewish education to children worldwide. Our main benefi ciaries in these efforts are the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee and the Jewish Agency For Israel. JDC and JAFI provide for rescue, relief, reconstruction and Joint Distribution absorption of Jews in need around the world. Committee An identity-building, life-defi ning Jewish camp experience for more than 5,000 youths in the former Soviet Union A lifeline to the poorest Jews in the former Soviet Union and around the world Giving at-risk Israeli youths A critical head the tools to compete on a start for Ethiopianlevel playing fi eld Israeli preschoolers Federation’s Social Services Department T his vital department of the Federation handles intake and assessment of clients of all ages in need of social services, operation of the Federation’s food pantry, referrals for services in the greater community, student loans and scholarships, a bereavement group, and development and implementation of new programs to reach out to Jewish families and children. Elaine Arnovitz is chair of the Federation’s Social Services Department. DJCC campers are among the numerous volunteers of all ages who help out in the Federation Food Pantry A can do attitude...in the wake of the recession, the Federation signifi cantly expanded its food pantry, which serves the entire community. Dayton area Jewish community organizations and Federation departments and agencies regularly hold drives for the pantry. In 2009 the pantry distributed 2,115 bags of food, an increase of 121 percent over 2008. This year, creativity and partnerships have played key roles in keeping the pantry stocked, including a matching challenge from the Feinstein Foundation in Rhode Island for March and April, winning 500 cans of kosher soup from Manischewitz in an online promotion, and a can drive during the run of The Aluminum Show at the Victoria Theatre. UJC 2010 United Jewish Campaign of the Jewish Federation of Greater Dayton I am honored and privileged to serve as the United Jewish Campaign Annual Campaign Chair this year. Over the past 100 years, the Jewish Federation of Greater Dayton has helped countless people overcome poverty, hunger and despair. We continue to provide funding to programs that sustain Jewish identity and enrich our community, our country and beyond. However there is still much to do locally, nationally, in Israel, and around the world. I thank those of you who have already made your 2010 commitments and implore those of you who have not done so yet to please consider making your gift. Be counted among Campaign Chair Howard Abromowitz the hundreds in Dayton who seek to make a difference. In honor of our 100th anniversary we are asking for 100 percent participation in this year’s Annual Campaign. Your gift will provide hope and dignity for Jews in Dayton and around the world and continue our work which touches so many lives in our community and abroad.
