Letter from the President, KASF, ERC
Leonard Kim
President, KASF Eastern Region
On behalf of the Korean American Scholarship Foundation (KASF), I would like to
thank everyone here tonight for joining us to congratulate this year’s scholarship
recipients. These students are truly deserving of our scholarships and they are most
grateful to each of our sponsors for the help.
Our organization is blessed with your continuing support, as it has allowed us to continue our mission and maintain steady
growth over the past 43 years. As the first and the largest Korean American scholarship organization in the United States,
we have much to be thankful for and much that is still expected from us.
This year, we introduced our very first Education and Career Conference, a program to help our students become better prepared for a career beyond their college educations. The focus of this Conference is not only to bring
together an impressive group of mentors (many of whom are our own board members) to share their knowledge and own experiences on successfully traversing the difficult journey from college to career. It is also intended
to promote sustained relationships between students and these mentors that will hopefully continue after
this Conference.
Some time ago, I shared the following statement with some of our students: “It’s not what you have, but what you do with
what you have that defines who you are.” I believe the same also applies to our organization. By expanding our traditional
role of awarding scholarships to also include sharing of our knowledge and experiences, it will help KASF shape itself as a
more valuable organization to help our students realize their full potential, and thereby to our community.
As we look back at our organization’s 40+ year history, we also strive to look ahead to the next 40 years and beyond. To
help ensure that future, we began a process this year of bringing together our future leaders by inviting a new group of
dedicated young professionals to join us as KASF volunteers and future leaders. I am confident that with their help, and
with your continued and generous support, the future of our organization will be a bright one.
Thank you again to each and every one of our board members, donors, sponsors, and volunteers for another successful
year for KASF.
Leonard Kim
President, KASF-ERC

Letter from the Chairman, KASF National
Sang Nam Lee
Chairman, KASF National Board of Directors
First of all, I would like to congratulate all the scholarship recipients for your hard work. You
are the winners who have excelled in academic endeavors and overcome financial challenges, and were selected as fortunate recipients after significant competition with other
students. Therefore, you are the guests of honor for us this evening, and we are here to celebrate your accomplishments and to
encourage you to continue pursuing your dreams.
However, I must add that there were many students who were almost equally well-qualified, but did not receive the scholarships,
simply because we did not have enough funds.
As Chairman of the National Board of Directors, I can tell you that it is one of our goals to increase our endowment funds and step
up other fund-raising activities in the regional chapters. We have been awarding scholarships since 1969. It started right here in
Washington D.C. Even while we were giving scholarships every year without interruption for the past 43 years, we were able to accumulate 3.5 million dollars in our endowment fund from which we are giving $142,000 this year to students in 7 regional chapters
in the U.S. In addition, each regional chapter raises funds independently to award more scholarships, called “General Scholarships”.
However, this amount falls far short of our goals to meet the needs of our students. This is the very reason why we altogether need
to increase our effort to raise more funds from all areas of business and particularly from the Korean American community.
I specifically would like to commend the leaders of the Eastern Regional Chapter in Washington D.C. area for their efforts to raise
the funds to award scholarships this evening. Under the leadership of President Leonard Kim, all members of the board of directors
volunteered their time and effort. It is their spirit and dedication that keeps our organization to grow and remain strong. The recipients and the community alike should appreciate how hard it is to come up with such scholarships in today’s economy. We however
fully understand that the dollar amount of scholarships per student still needs to be increased as well as the number of recipients.
I also would like to take this opportunity to mention to you that President Leonard Kim recently led a campaign to recruit young professionals to get involved with KASF and received enthusiastic responses. They are now actively participating in mentorship, website
improvement, and even in the selection of scholarship recipients. Many of you have participated today in the education conference
today which is designed for both students and parents to provide the building blocks for a successful transition to college from high
school and a new career to the society from college.
I expect that the young people like you who will soon grow to be young professionals carry the torch of our foundation with new
energy and fresh ideas. Koreans strongly believe in education. It is in our culture and part of our proud tradition. Thus, our work
and mission for the Korean American Scholarship Foundation must be carried on. I sincerely hope that you keep this in mind so that
someday you will return to KASF in any capacity possible. For that, I truly count on you.
Sang Nam Lee, M.D.
Chairman, National Board of Directors

Letter from the Ambassador
Y. J. Choi
Ambassador of the Republic of Korea
It is a great privilege to extend my warmest congratulations in celebration of the
43rd Annual Korean American Scholarship Award Ceremony.
As many of you are aware, the Korean American Scholarship Foundation (KASF) has granted numerous scholarship
awards to Korean American students across the nation. In an effort to support the many diverse academic passions and curiosities of young adults, KASF has proven to be an organization committed to the education of second
generation Korean Americans. In helping to meet the financial needs of these students, KASF has allowed for many
learning opportunities that may never have occurred without the foundation’s support. The Korean American
Scholarship Foundation has created a pathway towards a bright future for the Korean community.
Despite certain periods of economic decline in our country, for the past forty-three years the Korean American
Scholarship Foundation has continued to thrive in providing vital learning opportunities for Korean American students. This has been possible only due to the leadership efforts of the foundation. I am grateful for these leaders’
services, as well as for the many supporters present here today, who have donated the resources necessary to create this successful organization. My deep appreciation goes out to all those present here.
Lastly, I would like to sincerely congratulate all those students who received a scholarship this year. It was your
dedication and hard work that brought you here and it is that same work ethic that will bring your success in the
future. You deserve to be proud of your accomplishments. Please continue to strive in reaching for higher education and more learning opportunities. I expect that all of you will make a significant difference in your respective
communities.
Please enjoy this event. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Y. J. Choi

Pianist; past KASF scholarship recipient
Rooted in extensive classical training and a background in skateboarding, snowboarding, martial arts, and video games, Mr. Hong is a creative force unmatched
in his youthful vivacity and boundless energy. His astonishing ability to connect
to people of all ages, experiences, and backgrounds distinguishes him and shapes his evolving performance style.
The Ocala Star-Banner called Mr. Hong “Classical for the iPod generation.”
Mr. Hong’s uniquely humorous and visionary approach to arts education has resulted in artistic residencies worldwide. In recognition of the pianist’s gift for communicating his passion for music to audiences of all ages, The
McGraw-Hill Companies honored him with the Robert Sherman Award for Music Education and Community Outreach. His tireless pursuit to find, inspire, and collaborate with talents in every community results in unforgettable
presentations that both expand worlds and hit close to home.
Mr. Hong completed performances in all fifty states with concerts in Anchorage and Fairbanks, Alaska in 2011. In
August, Mr. Hong made his debut at Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, performing Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody
on a Theme of Paganini. Later that summer, the audience of Crested Butte, Colorado witnessed Mr. Hong in an
unprecedented collaboration with multiple-Grammy-Award-winning bluegrass and folk rock legend John McEuen
of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.
His triumphant return to Steamboat Springs’ Strings in the Mountains Festival featured the world premiere of
Sonata for Mallets and Piano by Mike Garson with percussionist and composer Simon Boyar, as well as collaborations with festival directors Andrés Cardenes and Monique Mead. Mr. Hong and Mr. Boyar went on to collaborate
in a two-week residency in Las Vegas/Henderson, Nevada, during which they shared their gifts with thousands of
area students. The grand finale of this residency featured the Las Vegas Youth Orchestra in a Halloween concert
titled “Heroes and Villains, Might and Magic”. A lightsaber duel, and the premiere of their composition Heroes and
Villains for piano, percussion and orchestra, was a spectacle of light and sound that thrilled the capacity crowd.
In December, Mr. Hong performed as a guest artist of the White House as part of the 2011 White House Holiday
celebration.
Alpin Hong is a native of Michigan and made his orchestral debut with the Kalamazoo Symphony at the age of
ten. He moved to Los Angeles soon after and garnered competition victories at a young age with wins at the 1989
Stravinsky Piano Competition, the 1993 SYMF Competition and the 1994 Los Angeles Spotlight Awards Competition. He was the winner of the Concert Artists Guild Competition in 2001. His teachers include Mark Richman and

2012 Scholarship Recipient Essay
JiHae Lim
James Madison University student
My grandfather was no ordinary man. Each morning he would get up at 4 a.m. and begin his day by sweeping the front yard with a broom. Then he would wake his children
for the daily family morning worship time. He was the only man known to me who was a doctor but not wealthy.
He also held two jobs as a doctor on weekdays and as a pastor on weekends.
Many parents advise their children to pursue medicine or law so that they could live a wealthy and comfortable
life. Grandfather was the epitome of the direct contradiction to that popular belief. Living a lavish life seemed to
be the last thing that occupied his mind. Rather, he never stopped looking for a way to give. For example, every
month, he visited rural villages without any doctors to give check-ups free of charge. Also, he gladly made free appointments for those who couldn’t afford them. One person who acknowledged my grandfather for his generosity
was a pastor named Ildo Choi; in his book The Cooking Poet Who Scoops Out Love (밥짓는 시인 퍼주는 사랑),
he thanked my grandfather for helping his sick son in times of need. The Red Cross also presented him an award.
Not only that, he did not accept any payments for his service in the ministry.
Ironically, in his later years he developed stomach cancer. His last words to my father and aunts were not of monetary inheritance; rather, he told them, “Money I cannot give you, but there is one thing I can: the gospel. That
is my greatest inheritance to you on this earth.” I have probably heard this quote a thousand times, repeated by
my father. Naturally these words stayed with me over the years, even after my grandfather had long passed away.
Another astonishing moment was during his funeral. Most of the people who had come to the funeral were ones
who had personally received help from my grandfather, and many confessed that he was like a second father to
them. They didn’t simply view him as a benefactor; Grandfather had made a lasting impact on peoples’ lives, beyond the obvious benefit they received.
My grandfather had inspired my father to choose his profession as a pastor, and he has inspired me as well. Only,
my chosen field of profession is not ministry, but medicine. I have seen how my grandfather used his job as a
doctor to glorify God and help others, and he was not interested in just making a comfortable life for his family.
Seeing this has left such a great impact on me and I too want to work in the same environment and with the same
mindset. That is how I decided upon my major of nursing and I hope to use my degree to help others and make a
positive impact in the community around me as my grandfather did.

Yong Suh
The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine student
After college, I undertook a research fellowship at the National Institutes of Health in
the laboratory of Dr. Francis Collins, who had a profound impact on my commitment
to become a physician-scientist-leader. Under his guidance, I contributed to an international study to map and
identify susceptibility genes for type 2 diabetes, and his career path from a physical chemist to a medical scientist
showed me how seemingly disparate career paths can be synergistic and contributory to a productive career in
medicine. Working alongside Dr. Collins at the mecca of biomedical research showed me that one does not have
to choose a clinical career at the exclusion of research, education, and leadership. This inspired me to take a multipronged approach to building my career in healthcare.
In addition to being a brilliant physician-scientist, Dr. Collins taught me the importance of serving others, and his
past work as a physician volunteer in a rural missionary hospital in Nigeria motivated me to lead a life of service.
During my research fellowship, I volunteered as a Korean language interpreter at the NIH Clinical Center, which
introduced me to patients with rare diseases and reminded me of what initially drew me to clinical medicine: patient care. I remember assisting one Korean family whose daughter was afflicted with McCune-Albright syndrome.
Even though her parents knew no cure existed for their daughter’s condition, they were singularly dedicated to her
wellness and to the advancement of research about her medical condition. Few careers allow one to so intimately
connect with another human being on a daily basis. In countless conversations that I have had with patients and
their families, people have shared not only the details of their illness but also their personal crises, ideologies, and
passions. I have learned that while drugs and surgeries do not always rehabilitate the physical health of patients,
through genuine care and empathy, physicians can help restore emotional well being and a sense of dignity to
patients and their loved ones.
Perhaps the most important lesson that I learned from Dr. Collins is living a life of purpose. The tragic events of
9/11 occurred during my tenure at the NIH. During a time of grave uncertainty and fear, Dr. Collins organized a
town hall meeting in which he reminded us that we were doing “good work” and that the heinous terrorist attacks
should not derail us from our mission to advance research and improve health. This sense of mission has brought
me to Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, where I am continuing my journey to become a leader in healthcare. I
have expanded my research repertoire to include comparative effectiveness research, which has allowed me to
examine healthcare issues that straddle clinical practice, economics, and policy. The healthcare system has evolved
into a complex ecosystem of multiple stakeholders with competing interests, and I believe my ongoing academic
training in both patient care and research will prepare me for a career dedicated to making our healthcare system
more efficient and equitable.

Background
배경
Founded in 1969 by a small group of concerned individuals in Washington, D.C., the KASF began as a local organization with limited focus and
funding sources. However, with the dramatic growth of the Korean immigrant community in the U.S., the KASF has expanded to other regions
to broaden its funding base. Since inception the KASF has been able to
build an endowment fund of over $3.6 million, through the generous
support of both Korean and American corporations as well as individuals. Each year, the KASF has been able to offer scholarship awards to an
increasingly large number of students. To date, over 5,000 students have
benefited from KASF scholarships.
Organizational Structure
The Korean American Scholarship Foundation is a nationwide organization with separate regional offices in Washington, D.C., Chicago, Los
Angeles, Atlanta, New York City, Detroit and Houston. To better serve
the fast growing number of Korean-American students nationwide, the
KASF established a national executive board composed of representatives from each of the regions in 1989.

Count on it.
Life has no guarantees, but in business, I knew exactly what
I wanted. A company that gave me the start-up help I needed,
freedom to make my own decisions …
plus the chance to earn a great living. With so many unknowns in life,
my career isn’t one of them. I can count on that.
