What's Goin' On
Around Town Newsletters
As the Public Relations and Event Coordinator for Bensalem Community Affairs, it is one of my
responsibilities to produce the quarterly Bensalem Newsletter, WHAT'S GOIN ON AROUND TOWN,
BENSALEM. This edition represents the final installment for 2010, and I wanted to do something
different for the front cover, so here it is! When Judy Loftus, Owner/Operator of PrintMasters,
Bensalem, PA, the mastermind of this community project first approached Mayor DiGirolamo with
her idea of an advertisement driven quarterly newsletter, that would not cost the taxpayers a nickel, I
was not supportive of this initiative . . . Can you imagine?
Mayor DiGirolamo and Township Council believed in the project and well . . . the rest is history.
Bensalem was the first municipality to support this initiative and received an award for community
journalism. Now, PrintMasters produces newsletters for more than 8 other municipalities throughout
Bucks County and beyond. The valuable lesson I learned in the early days of this production was to
just listen and work with the "team" mindset. Nothing works better in creating positive initiatives and
solving problems, than simple "team work".
With that being said, and with the quickly approaching holiday season, please come together as
a community and support others who are truly struggling to feed and clothe their families, let alone
provide gifts for Christmas. There is a solution . . . THE NEWLY CREATED INITIATIVE, ANNUAL
HOLIDAY HEART OF COMMUNITY.
In cooperation with General Growth Properties, Bensalem Township set up the Holiday Heart of
Community Display, parallel to the Sears/Barnes and Noble area of the Neshaminy Mall. The event
started Friday, November 12th and will be part of the holiday happenings at the Mall until December
21st. Families will enjoy the displays of Police Motorcycles, Holiday Characters and more!
A good community newsletter is a great way to inform your company's latest news, activities and
products. Yes, we are a government agency, so what is our product you might ask? SERVICE
SERVICE SERVICE. I receive phone calls from interested advertisers relative to the production of
this publication. If you wish to advertise with PrintMasters as it relates to the WHAT'S GOIN ON
AROUND TOWN, BENSALEM, simply call Judy Loftus at 215-244-4970.
On behalf of the Mayor and Mrs. Joseph DiGirolamo, Township Council and the employees of
Bensalem Township, we wish you are yours the best holiday season ever . . . it's all about family, enjoy
and be safe!

BUILDING SAFETY INTO YOUR LIFE
Most people take it for granted that when they buy a home, rent an apartment, send their children to
school, enter the grocery store, a mall, office building or public building that the structure is safe.
Safe buildings don't happen by chance, they happen by the building inspectors, code enforcement
officers, zoning officials and fire marshals ensuring that the structures are built safe; according to the
International Building Code and inspected frequently.
Bensalem Township has had documented Building Codes since 1954. The Building and Planning Department doesn't
see houses or buildings quite the way your average person sees them. The rickety deck someone built, you know, the one
clinging to the back of the house by some rusty nails? The homes with electrical hazards left over from the do-it-yourself
wiring jobs. The exit from the retail store blocked by skids of stock. The emergency lights in a commercial building that do not
operate. All of these things can cause more potential disasters. These are a small sampling of the hazards the inspectors deal
with on a daily basis in their quest to make sure the buildings of Bensalem are as safe as possible.
The Department is a multi-disciplined department and the office handles all applications, plans reviews and site
inspections. All inspectors are required to hold certifications in the various disciplines for which they conduct inspections.
The staff works to make sure all plans submitted to the office adhere to strict building codes. How strict? The code is
International, so it is basic and broad based…it's in black and white. The Department never sets out to give builders or
homeowners a hard time, but codes must be adhered to, the way they are written. When building a new home, each unit is
inspected numerous times throughout the construction process. Commercial projects, are inspected regularly, and
sometimes daily to ensure compliance and site safety.
Here's a tip: Before you start any building project around the house, take a moment and call the Township to ascertain if a
permit is required. It's a whole lot less impacting to do it right the first time.
As a homeowner, here are some ways building codes protect you and your family.
1. Scald protection: building codes require that showers be equipped with anti-scald valves to prevent injury.
2. Ground Fault Interrupters (GFI's): building codes require GFI's in the kitchen, bath, outdoors and anywhere you
might be exposed to a wet environment. The GFI's turn off the power to the outlet BEFORE someone can be harmed
by an electrical shock.
3. Stair rails and Guard Rail Systems: building codes address the size and spacing of stair railings to prevent children
from falling through or getting their head stuck. They also protect the general public by regulating the height of the
stair rail and guard rail.
WHO NEEDS BUILDING CODES?
We all do — whether in our homes, offices, schools, stores, factories or places of entertainment. We rely on the safety of
the structures that surround us in our every day living. The public need for protection from disaster due to fire, structural
collapse and general deterioration underscores the need for modern codes and their administration.
HOW RELIABLE ARE THEY?
The majority of the aspects of building construction – electrical wiring; heating; structural components; mechanical
systems and sanitary facilities all represent a potential hazard to building occupants and there users. Building codes provide
safeguards, while reducing or eliminating risks is the ultimate goal.
WHY SHOULD MINIMUM SAFETY CODES APPLY TO MY OWN HOUSE?
For several reasons:
• For your personal safety; and that of your family and the guests you invite into your home.
• To ensure the economic well-being of the community by reducing potential spread of fire and disease.
• To protect future home purchasers who deserve reasonable assurance that the home they will buy is safe.

PENNSYLVANIA TURNPIKE
On November 22nd, the Pennsylvania Turnpike
Commission opened the new E-Z Pass Only Interchange in
Bensalem, approximately one-half mile east of its Bensalem
Interchange (Exit # 351). The All Electronic Interchange (AEI) designated as the Street Road Interchange (Exit #352 will only
accommodate eastbound entering and eastbound exiting
traffic and offer direct PA Turnpike access via Street Road
(State Route #132) between Parx Casino and U.S. Route 1.
Only motorists with an active E-Z Pass account will be
eligible to utilize the Street Road AEI. All E-Z Pass tags from
any of the 24 tolling agencies in 14 states (primarily in the
Northeastern United States) will be accepted . Non-E-Z Pass
(cash paying) motorists who try to use the interchange will
receive a video-toll violation in the mail and are liable to pay the
toll from the farthest PA. Turnpike entry point plus
administrative fees.
The new interchange will help improve traffic flow on the Turnpike mainline and alleviate congestion
at the neighboring Bensalem and Delaware Valley toll plazas; it will enhance mobility on adjoining
roadways and provide improved access to nearby attractions like the Parx Casino and Race Track and
destinations such as the TD Bank Amphitheater, Neshaminy State Park and Benjamin Rush State Park.
The Street Road AEI is the product of a unique, public-private partnership between the PTC and Bensalem Township
which started to take shape in 2006 when the two parties discussed the idea of carrying out this cooperative, transportationimprovement project. Under the terms of the agreement, the township managed the design and construction of the AEI while
the PTC reimbursed the township for all related costs.

rubbish, unkempt yards, unused swimming pools, etc. By keeping your property in good order,
you save the Township inspections, mailings and court filings. Thank you to all those who
continue to keep their property in great shape, thereby making Bensalem Township a better
community.

WINTER TIME SAFETY
Wintertime presents many safety challenges in the home. The use
of portable heaters, fire places pose the most risks to homeowners.
The following is a few basic safety guidelines to assure your home kept
safe during the cold winter months. Remember to test your SMOKE
and CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS monthly.
FIREPLACES:
1. Have flues and chimneys inspected before each heating season
for leakage and blockage by creosote or debris.
2. Open the fireplace damper before lighting the fire and keep it
open until ashes are cool. Never close the damper if ashes are
still warm this may cause a build up poisonous gases inside the
home.
3. Always keep combustible materials (kindling, newspapers,) at a
safe distance from your fireplace.
4. Always store ashes in a fire resistant container and have the
container covered with a lid. Always keep the container
outdoors and away from combustible materials.
PORTABLE HEATERS:
1. Place the heater on a level, hard and non flammable surface, not
on rugs or carpets, near bedding or drapes. Keep heater at least
three feet from bedding, drapes, furniture and other combustible
material.
2. To reduce the risk of fire, never leave a space heater on when you
leave your home or when you go to sleep. Turn the space heater
off if you leave the area of the space heater. Never use extension
cords to power electric heaters
3. Use a space heater that has been tested to the latest standards
and is certified by a nationally recognized testing laboratory (UL).
4. Keep children from playing around the space heaters.

BENSALEM POLICE VEHICLES
Pictured here is Director of Public Safety, Fred Harran, Mayor
Joseph DiGirolamo, BCTHS students and Staff. Back in 2006,
the Bensalem Police Department converted the color scheme on
their patrol units to the traditional black and white. Thanks to the
students and the Collision Repair technology class, our older
vehicles were successfully painted to update our entire fleet.
Since the supplies were the only cost to the Township, Bensalem
saved over $14,000.00
