Holiday Party
The magic of Boggy
Creek lives in all of us.
We are so lucky to be
able to enjoy the
weekend with you all.
We hope we carry the
love onto others we
meet within our daily
journeys.
–Camper family
Turning ten is a great reason to celebrate
when you’re a kid but when you’re a camp for
seriously ill children it’s cause for a year-long
party! Since Camp Boggy Creek first
opened its doors in 1996 over 30,000
children and family members have
cloaked themselves in the love, the fun,
the laughter and the hugs that they need
to be able to face their illnesses.
Family Retreat Weekends give parents
and siblings a weekend to unwind from the
stresses of having a sick family member.
And for the sick child it is a chance for
them to just be a normal kid – a week to forget
about the illness that grasps them the rest of the year.
From the time one enters Boggy’s gates, visitors and campers alike will
be embraced by our 10th birthday’s Celebrate Life theme. In the dining hall a
gigantic replica of a birthday cake is waiting for candles to be added during the
year-long festivities. Every candle added to the cake’s tiers will represent a
birthday gift – a donation given by the many generous Foundations,
Corporations, Founders and Directors, and by individuals who understand and
believe in the magic of our camp.
“The celebration of our 10th birthday gives us a chance to thank the
thousands of donors and volunteers who have made all this possible and to
invite those who haven’t yet been involved to come join us in this life changing
work”, summarizes June Clark, Boggy Creek’s president.
Campers will participate in the baking and decorating of a birthday cake that
will be eaten during the birthday bash held every camping session in 2006.
Celebrating Life will be incorporated in camp songs, camp cheers and added to
camp T-shirts.
So, campers and family members, volunteers and staff, Founders, Board
members, Foundations and corporations, look within yourselves to find your gifts
and talents and bring them with you to camp this year. Whether it’s making
others laugh, teaching, creating, motivating or comforting, each of you can make
a difference.

Executive Director’s Message
It’s an exciting year at Camp Boggy Creek –
our tenth year of serving seriously ill children!
You’ll notice our 10th Birthday logo theme is
“Celebrate Life” – as 2006 is a year of reflecting
and celebrating the many lives that have been
touched at Boggy Creek.
At this time we are wrapping up our Spring
Family Retreat Weekends. Since stepping into my
new role last fall, I’m reminded each weekend of
“the magic that happens” when I see families –
moms, dads, brothers and sisters – having the
time of their life at camp. Watching our young
campers, whether it’s the cancer retreat weekend,
asthma, heart or any of the other diseases we
host at Camp Boggy Creek, is a unique experience and truly rewarding to see firsthand.
In September 2005 we welcomed Shelly Church as our newest Board
member. Shelly is the Senior Vice President of Investments with the Church &
Sawin Planning Group of Raymond James & Associates, Inc. in Naples, FL. We
are pleased to have her serving on our Board.
In late November, Dr. Susan Griffis joined our staff as the full-time Medical
Director. Dr. Griffis previously served as a pediatric physician with Emergency
Services at Halifax Medical Center. Dr. Griffis is a native Floridian, received her
undergraduate degree at University of Florida, her medical degree from Creighton
University in Omaha, Nebraska and completed her Pediatric Internship and
Residency at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Our former Medical Director,
Dr. Judy Wall accepted a full time Medical Director position at Nemours Children’s
Clinic in Orlando. Dr. Wall continues to be an advocate and supporter of Camp
Boggy Creek and we wish her well in her new role. Please join me in welcoming
“Dr. Sue” to our Boggy Creek team.
As we begin our plans for summer 2006 we hope you will be a part of our
tenth year of serving Florida’s seriously ill children. If you haven’t visited before, I
invite you to come see what “the Magic” is all about at Camp Boggy Creek.
Whether you are a volunteer, a sponsor, donor, parent or guardian – each of you
plays a significant role to ensure children get to experience Camp Boggy Creek.
Thanks for your past support and continued support as we launch our plans for
the next decade of service.
June Clark
Marjorie Bekaert Thomas Becomes Emeritus Board Member
Marjorie Bekaert Thomas has been a valued supporter of Camp Boggy Creek
long before she joined the Board of Directors in 1997. She was part of the core
leadership group that brought Florida Hospital and Boggy Creek together in the
early days, resulting in the donation of the 232 acres we enjoy as the camp
property today. Usually at her side during most board meetings was her dog, Miss
Plum and after whom the “Miss Plum Tuckered Out” room in the Patch is named.
Marjorie has always sought to involve her constituents, friends and her amazing
team at Ivanhoe Communications. She leaves the active board to become Director
Emeritus with the grateful thanks of her fellow board members, our entire staff and
the thousands of children her efforts have served.
Thanks Marjorie and Miss Plum!

Camp Director’s Message
By Dorcas Tomasek
Being the Camp Director of Camp Boggy Creek the
past five years I have had the honor and privilege of
being surrounded by the bravest and most courageous
families I have ever encountered. Listening to their
stories of struggles and triumph continues to amaze
me, and how this sacred place has captured their
hearts reaffirms all that we do. One evening during the
Saturday night dance on a family retreat I sat down with
one family who shared how powerful this place meant
to them.
I met this family back in 1998 when they first
encountered Boggy Creek. The father, very quiet,
refused to participate in anything. He didn’t say much
that weekend, yet his family and especially his
daughter who had spina bifida flourished in the love
and spirit that is Camp. It took two more visits to Boggy
Creek before the father warmed up and finally spoke
about the impact of the weekend. He talked of his
daughter laughing, singing, dancing and how there was
no one at home knocking on the door wanting to play
with her and yet here “good looking” college kids were
fighting over who would dance with her next. And so it
began, the magnitude of impact we were making.
It is 2006, and many weekends have passed. This
family has come many times and now is on a waiting
list just in case a new family cancels at the last minute.
They would drop everything on Friday morning and
drive five hours from Miami just to have another
opportunity to spend time at camp.

This father had been working at a company for
the last 23 years and decided to venture out and
seek a newer, higher paying job with better benefits
and more responsibility. He interviewed and
overwhelmed the employer with his capacity to fit the
position. They offered him a wonderful opportunity. In
his last conversation before signing the contract he
mentioned there was this special camp, Camp Boggy
Creek, that was very important to his family. He
explained there might be a time his family would get
the call to return to a place of love and he would have
to miss work. It was met with cold reservations: “I am
not sure that would be possible.” He went home that
evening, and his wife asked him how everything
went. He stated, “I’m not going to take the job, they
don’t understand Boggy Creek. This place has
become too important to Kerry and to us.”
The very next Friday at 12:08 pm after a
cancellation, our Camper Recruiter called this family.
The father, having remained in his old job,
rearranged everything and joined us for another
weekend of celebrating life, love and laughter. When
arriving on camp, the wife said, “Dorcas you have no
idea what this place means to us. If you called us on
the day of my son’s wedding, we would postpone,
and he would gladly agree and come with us.” To
the world you may be only one person, yet to one
person, you may be the world. We are so lucky these
wonderful families are in our world and believe in
what we do.

Meet Our “Magical” Facilities Team
There are bears and afghans and quilts on every bed. The
windows, bathrooms are spotless. The wood floor in the lobby of
the theatre shines. Is it more Boggy magic? All the golf carts are
filled with gas and the grass seems to be just the right length. Is it
Boggy magic? Well, magic staff members for sure.
All this work and so much more is thanks to the dedication of
the unsung heroes of Camp Boggy Creek, our facilities team.
Brenda, Melina, Judy and Lavond are part of the magic. They
handle many tasks such as emptying the garbage, doing
thousands of pounds of laundry and making about 5,000 beds
each year. Lavond takes pride in making sure each bed has
matching bears, afghans and quilts. When she spots a special
quilt for the animal farm, she grabs it and hangs it up for all the
campers to enjoy. While she’s cleaning she finds a moment to
watch the kids ride the horses or pet the cows. Lavond knows
why her work so important. “At the end of summer, when you go
into the dining hall and the voices are gone, well…you’re wishing
the kids would never leave.”
This winter, Roberto, Art, Douglas and Juan spent three
months taking care of the final clean up of trees left behind by the
hurricanes of 2004 and 2005. This was done while still mowing,
preparing for family weekends, maintaining the pool, repairing
broken gates and doors and helping with special events. At a
moments notice anyone on the facilities team might be called to
help move boxes, gas up a car or get that silly snake away from
the theatre. If you’ve got a golf cart or camp vehicle with a flat,
just call Art and he’ll get that done then he’s off to finish painting
on cabin row.
There is no down time at Camp Boggy Creek for the facilities
staff. When kids aren’t at camp, there is still much needed work to
be done and Juan Morales, Director of the facilities team is
always there to make sure it’s done right. They may not do the
cheers with campers, but they can hear them chant and sing.
“I do it for the kids” says Douglas. “Whatever I do during a
day, I know I’m doing it for our kids.”

Scenic Views in the Patch
New Smyrna Beach artist Cathy Berse has lent her
incredible talents to the camp’s medical center, “The
Patch.” As one of several face-lift projects underway
during our 10th Birthday celebration, Cathy created
fanciful murals for two of the exam rooms. The dinosaur
exam table is now surrounded by a Jurassic forest
complete with lush plants, towering trees, an erupting
volcano and a clutch of newly hatched baby dinosaurs.
There is even a tiny lady bug hidden in the landscape for
campers to try and find.
Just down the hall in the “Bumps & Bruises” room,
campers’ imaginations will take flight as they look
skyward into a world filled with hot air balloons, planes,
floating clouds and huggable Boggy Bears. In one scene
campers can look down onto the planet and spot such
landmarks as the Taj Mahal, the Capital dome in
Washington and even Camp Boggy Creek where deer
are out roaming.
Cathy’s work took 175 hours and her efforts will be
enjoyed by our campers and volunteers for many years to
come.

CHILDREN’s MEDICAL SERVICES VISITS CAMP
A two-day conference of Children’s Medical Services (CMS) held at Camp Boggy
Creek in October of 2005 allowed 70 Directors of Nursing a hands-on look at our camping
program. Mary Parrish, our camper recruiter, spoke to the CMS group and explained the
camper application process. CMS nursing volunteers have increased by four and one
physician who spoke at the conference has volunteered her services at Boggy Creek.
Nurses leaving camp after the conference said now that they have seen the “magic” that
happens at camp they fully understand the importance of sending their pediatric patients
who qualify to Camp Boggy Creek. Thank you Dr. Phyllis Sloyer, Network Division
Director and Mittie Moffett, Community Health Nursing Consultant at CMS for arranging
this conference at our camp. This CMS conference was a great use of the camp’s limited
down time by incorporating a medical conference at camp while providing awareness
about our mission.

Wayne Employees Bring Automatic Smiles To Our Campers
From the moment one walks into the corporate offices of
Wayne Automatic Fire Sprinklers, Inc. in Ocoee, FL there is no
doubt as to their commitment to the children and families who
come to Camp Boggy Creek. Boggy Creek literature and Boggy
Creek posters adorn the lobby walls. A five gallon fish tank,
strategically placed in the lobby, is reserved not for aquatic life
but for Wayne employees to place their loose change that is
added to the Wayne employee giving donations for Boggy Creek.
Employees can give their best guess as to the total amount in the
tank and the winner takes half the loot home with them. Sarah
Kelly, V.P. of Business Development for Wayne and winner of the
Wayne Gey and Clark Gey, owners of Wayne Automatic Fire
2005 year-end prize donated her half back to Boggy and then
Sprinklers, Inc. presenting Terry Zwicker, Boggy Creek’s Major
matched it bringing the total for the fish tank collections to $1,200,
Gifts Officer a check for $107,000!
plus one button, one paperclip, and an assortment of Canadian
coins!
The commitment to Camp Boggy Creek goes even deeper than the lobby at Wayne Automatic Fire Sprinklers. Wayne
and Clark Gey, owners of this award winning fire sprinkler company, donate to camp as well. In 2005 their donations along
with the employee contributions allowed them to present Camp Boggy Creek with a check for $107,000. But Wayne
Automatic Fire Sprinklers’ commitment goes beyond financial support – they add sweat equity into the mix too. Employee
volunteers built with their own hands and tools two pavilions that provide shade from the sun, allowing our campers to
spend more time fishing and golfing then they otherwise would.
Wayne Automatic Fire Sprinklers and other very generous corporations and foundations provide the necessary glue
that binds the mission of camp – to provide a fun, exciting, empowering, physically safe and medically sound camping
experience at absolutely no charge to Florida’s seriously ill children.

11th Annual Daytona Harley-Davidson
Ride For Children
Outback...that’s where you normally find all the hard workers that
serve up food for over 1,000 bikers, but on Friday evening prior to the
Ride, Outback was front and center as we paid tribute to Rob
Muellman and Outback Steakhouse during the 2nd Annual
Champagne Ball. For a decade, Rob and his staff have ensured
plenty of food and volunteers to serve the riders that keep coming to
camp during the Harley-Davidson Ride for Children. Bruce
Rossmeyer, camp Founder and Board member, paid tribute to Mr.
Muellman making him the first inductee into the Daytona HarleyDavidson Ride for Children Hall of Fame. The evening included Rob
expressing his gratitude to his team that makes it all possible each
year and the night was topped off when Aerosmith lead singer,
Steven Tyler signed a guitar during the auction. Saturday evening all
the VIP package riders took to the dance floor at the Hilton in
Daytona enjoying good food and music.
Sunday the bikers hit the road during the 11th Annual Daytona
Harley-Davidson Ride for Children, pushing off for a longer trip
starting at the new Bruce Rossmeyer’s Destination Daytona location
in Ormond Beach. All the riders enjoyed the silent and live auctions,
beverages and that Outback Steakhouse lunch. Grand Marshall’s
Arlen Ness, Eddie Trotta, Kendall Johnson, Roland Sands and Jesse
Rooke were given a special tour of camp by Boggy Creek camper
David Roth. During the live auction Jesse Rooke and Roland Sands
jumped in to support camp with each one sponsoring a camper.
When it was over and the bikers headed home, Camp Boggy Creek
received $500,000 as a result of the three day event. Thanks to Bruce
Rossmeyer, Beverly Marshall and all the sponsors who make the
Daytona Harley-Davidson Ride for Children possible.

SEDRA RIDE
Potluck, ponies and a ride through
the woods! Over 52 horses and riders
completed a 27 mile trail ride in the
Seminole State Forest fondly known as
the B oggy 27. The se SEDRA
(Southeast Endurance Riders
Association) riders are dedicated to
Camp Boggy Creek. The weekend event
included raffles and a silent auction. At
the end of the weekend over $15,000
was raised thanks to the riders, their
sponsors and many from the group
making financial donations directly to
our camp. Thanks to organizer Nora
Mask and everyone at SEDRA.
HOPE AND HOLD ‘EM
It was a little Texas, but no horses
here, when the Give Hope Foundation
(www.givehopefoundation.org) held
“Hope and Hold ‘Em” at the Orlando
Science Center. The Texas Hold ‘Em
game was highlighted with an auction
and over $5,000 was raised and donated
to Camp Boggy Creek.
ROUND ROBIN TENNIS
Even Hurricane Wilma couldn’t stop
the dedication of 10th grader Lianne
Epstein-the tournament went on! Plans
were blowing in the wind after
Hurricane Wilma’s damage to South
Florida was so great that Lianne had to
start from scratch to plan her Round
Robin Tennis Fundraiser, but in the end
all went well. Thanks to the entries,
auction and support of her family and
friends more than $3,500 was donated to
Boggy Creek!

A Starry Starry Night
It was an evening worth a million at Universal’s Islands of
Adventure where over 200 guests came to celebrate Camp Boggy
Creek’s 10th Birthday and pay tribute to the Founders. Starry
Starry Night was hosted by Pete Giacalone, of Universal Orlando
Resort. During the evening Mr. Giacalone, Chairman of the event
host committee, announced proceeds of $100,000 and the Martin
Andersen-Gracia Andersen Foundation renewed its Founding
commitment with another pledge of $1 million dollars for Florida’s
bravest children.
The stars during the night included the camp’s most famous
Founders, Mr. Paul Newman and General H. Norman
Schwarzkopf. The two thanked everyone for coming and provided
inspirational messages about the experience each camper has
Camp Boggy Creek’s Founders attending the Starry Starry
while at Camp Boggy Creek. At the conclusion of the evening, Mr.

Newman and General Schwarzkopf signed a commemorative 10th
Birthday Boggy Bear which was auctioned. Mrs. Helen White not
only took home the bear for $26,000, but joined Mr. Newman and General Schwarzkopf for a photo. This unique progressive dinner party would not have been possible without the host committee’s hard work. Camp Boggy Creek would like

A Very Special Gift to Camp Boggy Creek
Every child looks forward to a special surprise on their birthday
and so when Tom Warlow, President of the Martin Andersen-Gracia
Andersen Foundation announced the Foundation’s gift of $1 million at
Boggy Creek’s 10th Birthday Founders Reception, perhaps no one could
have imagined a surprise as grand as that. Tom’s announcement reconfirmed the commitment that his cousin, Gracia Andersen made to
the children of Camp Boggy Creek ten years earlier.
Born in Orlando, Florida, Gracia Warlow Barr arrived with her
twin brother Graham, perhaps immediately learning the importance of
sharing. Her giving spirit continued through the years while she and her
husband helped shape the Central Florida that we now know. And, as
her name would imply, she did so graciously, and often, anonymously.
Gracia knew better than most what it meant to be a child with a
chronic illness. As a youngster she suffered from osteomyelitis and
could not attend regular school with her friends. Gracia never forgot the
hardships of her childhood illness so when she was introduced to the
idea of a camp in Florida where kids could go and forget for a time that
they were sick, she gave her first million dollars to help ensure that
chronically ill children would find respite from their daily challenges
and she became a founding member of the Boggy Creek Gang Camp.
Through the years, the Martin Andersen-Gracia Andersen
Foundation has continued to support Boggy Creek. If you happen to
find yourself on cabin row take a look at Camper Cabin #2 Green. You
will see a small bronze plaque located on the wall just inside the porch
bearing the name of Gracia’s Foundation – it serves as a constant
reminder for all who enter the cabin that Gracia Andersen knew and
understood the struggles of children and their families who deal with
serious childhood illnesses. Thank you Tom Warlow for continuing
Gracia’s legacy!
