Md AHPERD eNEWS! SEPTEMBER 15, 2014! MAHPERD eNews MAHPERD Mission MAHPERD CONVENTION WYNDHAM HUNT VALLEY INN OCTOBER 16TH-18TH, 2014 In-school and in-county professional development sessions usually offer words of note from your county supervisor, perhaps a motivational speaker, and then 2-3 sessions on an up-to-date practice in your field(s) of instruction. Most of the time, you have no choice, or the choice is limited as, to what you will attend. ! This is the difference when you attend the MAHPERD Professional Development Conference #1 Location: For most of you, there will be some travel involved, BUT you will be in a venue designed for presentations, not squeezed in a 1/2 of a gymnasium where you cannot hear or see the presentation. ! #2 Speakers: From Jean Blades Moize to the other 60+ speakers, each person at the conference has been reviewed by the convention planning committee for content and expertise. Some of these experts are from Maryland and others have traveled from across the US to bring information and innovation to Maryland classrooms. #3 Health, PE, Dance, APE. All disciplines are represented during each session: Depending upon your teaching schedule, you could attend a PE session followed by an APE presentation, and then a health session. You get to plan your day. The only thing asked of you is to attend the General Assembly where important information as to the direction of our organization will be presented. ! #4 Time: On convention day, school systems allow you to attend and you don’t have to worry about missing lessons and finding time to catch up. MAHPERD provides you with lunch. See your friends from college or other schools and school systems. Visit exhibitors with the latest in resources or equipment. To enhance and promote the health and wellness of all the citizens of Maryland, the MAHPERD organization provides advocacy and professional development opportunities designed to advance and unify the professions of health education, physical education, recreation, and dance. MAHPERD Vision MAHPERD’s vision is to become a leading organization, which promotes and supports healthier, more creative and active Maryland citizens by advocating and promoting personal wellness and healthier lifestyles through educational and community programs. ! Education is Your Professional Professional Development is Your Responsibility 1 Md AHPERD eNEWS! SEPTEMBER 15, 2014 Many of you had an opportunity to hear a motivational speaker at your fall county professional development. I heard many comments that indicated it was one of the best things to have at the start of the school year. The speaker below is of that same caliber. Jean will motivate, educate and make you a passionate advocate for your profession. This opportunity is not one to voluntarily decline to miss. ! If you are a true professional, come and meet another one. ! ! Most Maryland schools are already conducting parts of the Presidential Youth Fitness Program in their regular Physical Education curriculum. Some schools are establishing walking or running clubs before or after school, or dance, jump rope teams, or fitness clubs for their staff. This grant will enable MAHPERD to supply you with additional resources, training, other grants that would help you implement the PYFP program. ! ! MAHPERD’s job is to communicate with you FREQUENTLY, via many venues, to apprise you of the ways you can become involved in the PYFP program. You may be contacted via email. If you are a Twitter member and have signed up to receive tweets about PE, Health or Dance, your phone may be buzzing with a tweet from MAHPERD. Do you use Pintrest, Facebook, or Instagram? The plan is to get all of these social media venues talking about PYFP. ! ! Those of us involved in the MAHPERD end of the grant responsibilities will keep a log of our contacts with our members. There is a possibility of 50 other districts in competition with us. We are already doing a great job in Maryland. Let’s communicate it among ourselves and with others.! ! Here is an example of the type of communication that you may receive:! ! Ø Ac#ve kids = healthy kids who are be5er able to learn, have higher self-‐esteem, and lower risk of developing chronic disease. Start the Presiden#al Youth Fitness Program to create an #Ac#veSchool environment w/ smart & healthy students. Begin the fall 2014 school year: www.pyfp.org @FITNESSGRAM Check it out then send it to your social media sites to get involved.! ! Md AHPERD eNEWS! SEPTEMBER 15, 2014 From your President-Elect! ! Wow, It is hard to believe that next month I will become the President of MAHPERD. A whole year has gone by in a flash. I have learned a lot and have met and worked with wonderful people. I have also tried to connect with as many areas of the state as possible. In my travels I have found many people willing to volunteer, lend a hand, take on a task and/or simply listen to my thoughts. MAHPERD does not function without members. Members drive the work of MAHPERD. You have about a month to make sure your membership is current and to pay for and attend the convention on October 17, 2014 in Hunt Valley, MD. Each year at the convention I hear members talking about how much they have taken away that can be used in their teaching the next week. This excites me that individuals find quality professional development at our state conference for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. You will gain valuable knowledge in order to stay up to date in your profession. Professional growth is a critical part of our professions. I hope to see you all there. It truly is worth it to spend the day with like minded people. ! By Amy Wiley, President Elect ! Md AHPERD eNEWS! ! ! SEPTEMBER 15, 2014 Passionate Professionals Wanted Become a MAHPERD Board Member Are you passionate about your profession? Do you constantly think about what you are going to teach and how best to motivate that one student that just deCies all your attempts to have fun. When you Cinally get a smile, do you feel like you won LOTTO? ! When a new concept regarding your profession is adopted by educational colleagues, do you want to make sure you understand and implement the new information? Do you research the popular internet sites for lesson ideas and make sure you are wasting no class time with unproductive tasks? Are you always trying to squeeze in an extra fact, assessment, or motivational strategy? ! Do you start out the school year with an attitude of “I can do it better.” Whether you are talking about your classes, your relationship with your administration, your communication with parents, or community involvement, do you have a goal for which to strive? ! Yes, we’re talking to you! ! You are the person we need at MAHPERD. The best advocates for our profession are the people intricately involved in it—the teachers. We need you to tell us how we can help. Would you like to participate in a ½ day workshop on a speciCic sport? Would you like to have 5-‐8 people demonstrate instant warm-‐ups in a class setting. How do you organize the class for an end of class assessment with exit slips? You have heard about the procedure, but how do you use and collect the slips of paper and what do you do with them as the next class walks in.? ! What a great idea! It’s a little extra work, but it will be worth it. I never thought about doing it that way? That method will save me 5 minutes each class. That procedure will save me a lot of work at the end of class. Just that little adjustment made such a difference. ! We need to learn from each other. It may not be the BIG stuff like Common Core or Standards Assessments, but there are little things that can make such a difference as we go about our professional tasks. SHARE! ! Join us at MAHPERD. Just one meeting a month, and not every month, will be all that is required. We need to hear from you. If you have ever thought to yourself, “I need to do more to GIVE BACK to my profession.” ,this is the place to start. Email President-‐Elect Amy Wiley at amy.wiley@pgcps.org to volunteer for a MAHPERD position. ! ! 5 Md AHPERD eNEWS! SEPTEMBER 15, 2014 ! This event was like a mini-superbowl for students with engaging and healthy activities from dusk till dawn. Students from all states coming together under one roof and collaborating and networking with one another - it was truly an amazing sight to see!!! ! I along with two of my physical education teachers also we were given the opportunity to receive a tour of Cowboys stadium and participate in an expo on the field hosted by the GenYouth foundation. There were numerous guest speakers to motivate the audience, including Troy Aiken and Bonnie Berstein, on the field games and instructional resources for the students to sample, unlimited healthy snacks and refreshments and a host of prizes for the students to win.! ! This was four action packed days that truly motivated my staff and me to come back to our county and implement this program with our own students this school year!! We can’t do it without you. ! Thanks to the almost 450 Maryland schools, public and private, who held Jump Rope and Hoops for Heart events during the 2013-‐14 school year. Because of your efforts, over $90,000 was returned to the Maryland AHPERD to continue to work on improving instruction, providing resources and advocating everywhere for Health, Physical Education an Dance in Pre-‐K through undergraduate programs. ! The same amount was returned to SHAPE America from Maryland schools to continue their great advocacy for us. A total of over $5 million from AHA will allow SHAPE to improve its efforts on our behalf. ! A list of all Maryland schools who participated was posted in the Journal. Additionally, the American Heart Association will be presenting awards at the convention, plus holding sessions on how and why to do Jump and Hoops efforts. ! For those teachers, parents, and helpers, who worked so hard to distribute the right ducks, check the checks and see who got online donations, go ahead and check off your “Community Involvement” assessment item. With all the snow, ice, falling trees and power outages, you were able to boost MAHPERD’s income by over $20,000. ! The American Heart Association has asked each state to help recruit additional participants. In Maryland, we have been asked to recruit 6 more schools. Won’t you join us in this very worthwhile cause. Heart disease and stroke are STILL the #1 cause of death in the US. MAHPERD helped lobby for the passing of the CPR requirement so that there will be even more people who can identify and help victims of Sudden Death and Stroke. ! We thank our state Jump Rope and Hoops Coordinator, Mrs. Ginny Popiolek who directs our efforts in this partnership. Her passion for this effort is boundless. 11 Md AHPERD eNEWS!
