TIME
FOR A RANT!
t’s not often I have a rant, but this is something
close to my heart. There are so many people,
it seems, who are so unhappy with themselves
or their lives that when they see someone else who is
positive and happy and spreading encouragement,
support and experiencing personal growth, these same
people can’t help but “cut down” or “have a go” at
them.
Often I get so many amazing people asking for advice
about this very issue and I am so disappointed it raises
its ugly head time after time! Correct me if I’m wrong,
but isn’t the goal of life to live it as well as you are able
to on all levels, and to be the very best person you can
be - not only for yourself but also for others?
Sometimes I wonder how some people can be so
quick to attack others without really taking the time to
know the person they are having a go at! Or worse for
something one of their so-called “friends” told them
“happened”.
Worse is when you get particular individuals who
lead the way in encouraging others to join in their
misguided causes. These followers are too weak to
stand for anything at all and become entwined in
something that was never anything to do with them in
the first place.
Before you “judge” others by jumping on the next
bandwagon of insults being thrown around the social
media platforms, take a good look in the mirror and
ask yourself

Your Letters
Hi,
I met Lindy and Lesley and the rest of the
wonderful ladies at the Melbourne Fit-X
this year and all I can say is what an honour
it was to meet such wonderful, inspiring
ladies. Lindy, you inspire me and let me
know it’s possible for a ‘big’ girl to slim
down enough to compete in bodybuilding
comps. Lesley, I hope to be as fit and
attractive as you are when I’m 55 years
young.
1 year and 4 months ago I saw pictures of
me at my work Christmas party and was
truly horrified - I knew that I was a bigger
girl but I didn’t think I was that fat. The
next day I joined the first gym I walked
into and got an exercise program written
up for me. I loved doing the weights but
unfortunately I was still eating the same
crap foods and so no weight was shifting,
the worst thing was I thought I was eating
healthy.
Two months later my friend got married
and after I saw the pictures from her
wedding I nearly cried… then got really
serious about losing the weight. I changed
my eating plan to the crazy no-carb
diet that my trainer insisted I eat, and
increased my training to 5-6 times a week.
I saw results and went from the high
80s to between 66-70kg. I kept seeing
Oxygen magazine on the shelves but I kept
thinking ‘Oh no, those bodybuilding mags
aren’t for me’ and walked past. One day I
picked the magazine up and was hooked.
I loved the informative, basic articles
without the ‘fluff’.
I eventually got sick of eating the no-carb
diet with enough protein powder in it to
make it unsafe to stand behind me with
all the protein farts I was doing (lol) and I
reintroduced carbs into my diet. Inevitably
I gained weight when I did this but now
everything seems stabilised and I am on
my way to losing it plus more, and I have
Oxygen mag to thank for that. Whenever
I need inspiration or advice I look at my
small (but getting bigger) collection of
Oxygen magazines, which travel with me
everywhere, and I get the advice I need
most times.
I am getting married at the end of this year
in India and thanks to Oxygen magazine
I am well on my way to being bride
beautiful. Thank you so much Oxygen
mag, Catherine.
PS After meeting all you wonderful ladies I
was inspired to do a bodybuilding routine
at the gym and now have the dream to
become an Oxygen mag covergirl and
maybe one day compete in a bodybuilding
comp.
PPS Lindy, after meeting you my friend’s
words were “she seems so warm and
caring”. Thought you would like to know :-)
Catherine
Dear Catherine,
WOW, what an amazingly heartfelt letter! I
was so pleased to meet you and I know ALL
the Oxy girls would have felt the same way
as me! I’m SO GLAD you decided to eat
carbohydrates again; they really are NOT
the devil that so many people make them
out to be! I for one eat starchy complex
carbohydrates ALL the way to comp and for
me, getting lean without them is impossible if
you want to stay sane! Plenty of people have
trained their bodies to run on fats, but these
same people often binge on carbs and their
weight fluctuates drastically. Not everyone
does this and I’m sure I’m yet to meet someone
who is lean and also sane by using the no-carb
method, but I’ve seen way too many people
with serious issues after they’ve cut complex
carbs out of their diet and it’s scary what they
have to go through to balance things back out
again! I’m so pleased for you; it’s so great to
see you feeling so positive about where you’re
headed! Yay for you !
Lindy xx
Lindy and the Oxy team,
Lia Drew’s article blew me away (and
just quietly it made me have a little cry).
It brought me back to all the memories
of the training, knockbacks and ups and
downs I went through applying to be a
police officer; after 2 years I finally got
there! Lia is an inspiration; you know
you’re a strong, beautiful and determined
woman when you keep getting up after
being knocked down so many times.
Women like her deserve recognition, this
is one of my favourite articles you’ve put in
the magazine since I started reading. Good
work Oxygen - now I’m going to stare at
Alicia Marie’s abs for a minute and get my
butt to the gym, ha. Jess xx
PS. guys thanks again, it gives me the
motivation to train super hard at work and
in training to be a sports model this year
for the hope that one day I will grace the
pages of Oxygen Xx
Jess
Hey Jess,
We loved Lia Drew’s story too! I’m really
happy you loved it too! She’s an incredible
lady with such a great attitude and we totally
agree she deserves as much recognition as
possible! People like Lia truly inspire us all to
be better people and to NEVER give up!
Keep following your dreams and go for it!

Hi Lindy,
I love your message to always FIND YOUR
MOJO! ‘REMEMBER YOU ARE WHAT
YOU EAT, THINK AND DO’ - the food we
choose, the thoughts we have and the
actions we take are all working to shape
our bodies of tomorrow, so make sure
your choices are good ones, that is, if you
want to achieve the body of your dreams!
WOW - What a knockout, thank you Lesley
Maxwell from all the Contours girls at
Greenslopes, your front cover and story
(in the August/September 2011 edition)
has motivated and inspired us all, you’re
truly inspirational and the epitome of good
health. No more excuses from any of us,
you prove that age is just a number but
it is up to us to believe in that motto and
live it to the full. As a trainer at Contours
I remind the girls that you must do
extraordinary things to be extraordinary,
besides… who wants to be ordinary?
Thanks for also informing readers about
the number one sports bra in Australia Juno by movingcomfort.com.au - it is the
best! I can always rely on Oxygen magazine
to be informative, modern and up to
date. Looking forward to trying kettlebell
workouts with the ladies at the gym to
shake things up and the curry peanut soup
- is the recipe of the week at the gym - yum!
Helen
Hi Oxygen Magazine,
My name is Emma Wilson and I featured
in the body transformation section of
the March/April issue of Oxygen. I just
wanted to email and say thank you
for the wonderful privilege it has been
to be featured in such a fantastic and
quality publication. I felt so proud and
honoured to be in the magazine knowing
its reputation within the fitness industry.
Thank you again and look forward to
seeing the Oxygen stand at Filex in April.
Thank you,
Emma
To whom this may concern,
Every now and then my husband and I
treat ourselves with a new mag of our
choice (or we hunt the second-hand
shops), mine is Oxygen and his is Track
Surf. I live too far out to get to a gym so
buying a mag is the next best thing. I do
as much as I can do from home. There are
a lot of exercises for the front and back of
the legs and my question is, what can I do
from home that will help burn the fat on
the inner and outer of my legs? Mainly the
inner as the front and back of my legs are
starting to take shape. Thank you I look
forward to your reply,
Denny
H Emma,
We’re so happy you were
happy with your feature!
You did an amazing job
and should be so proud of
yourself! It’s not easy
to set a goal and then
follow it through!
Congratulations
once again and we
hope you enjoy many
more fitness successes
ahead!!
Lindy xx
Hi Denny,
It’s hard to help without seeing a photo of
you but from what you’re saying it sounds
like you need to look at your nutrition a little
more closely and really get a leg training
program that specifically targets your inner
thigh. There’s a great exercise for your outer
thigh which is hard to explain, but if you get
yourself into a push-up position and make
sure your knees are not touching the floor
and hold yourself straight that’s a good start.
You’ll need to lock your core in place, then try
to get one leg out to the side while keeping it
in line with your torso. It’s really hard but I’ll
try to get a workout together for you to show
you what to do. Hold it out there for a count
of 5 seconds and then bring it back into the
original position. Then repeat 10 times on
both sides.
Hope this helps.
LBOX
Hey Helen!
A HUGE hi to all the ladies at Contours Gym!!
We all love Lesley; she is such a beautiful soul
with a heart of gold! We all love her to bits and
she is one of those ladies whose personality is
infectious! She’s in every issue these days and
we’ll keep her for as long as she’ll have us! If
I can look half as good as her after having
children, then I’m going to have a happy life
(and husband) hahaha Lindy xx

“
Stupidly I made a remark to
my buddy that resulted in
three things: a slightly heated
verbal exchange, a gymbased showdown and a really
large piece of humble pie!
“
T
here I was innocently enjoying a
brilliant display of skateboarding
along Santa Monica Beach when I
struck up a do-or-die conversation with Miss
Oxygirl herself! (You can guess who that
was!!!) Being an action man I marvelled at
the dudes on their skateboards in this highly
specialised park. They were flying around the
pool shaped-pits that are specially designed
to push their skateboarding to the limit. I was
in my element watching the tricks and spills
as these pros went crazy in the pit. Stupidly I
made a remark to my buddy that resulted in
three things: a slightly heated verbal exchange,
a gym-based showdown and a really large
piece of humble pie!
What did I say? I must admit that upon
reflection, it is even more embarrassing to
admit that I, publisher of thousands of fitness
mags, let it slip that whereas I could see the
art in the sport we were watching, I could not
see the same level of skill in the average gym
workout! I think I suggested that resistance
training was easy to master and a tad boring at
times. Hmm… it was another “Why did you
say that” moment! So the Oxygirl I was with,
let’s just say her name was Lulu, chewed me
out somewhat! Then she dragged me to the
closest gym and unleashed a workout that
required discipline and skill. You know what?
I could hardly do any of the exercises. Damn, I
had been exposed for what I truly was! A gym
hack!

The soul of Clean
Eating Magazine
is consuming food
in its most natural
state. It is not a
diet; it’s a lifestyle
approach to food
and its preparation,
leading to an
improved life – one meal at a time.
Beautifully presented and drawing on fresh
dietary theories, Clean Eating is brimming
with nourishing, easy-to-prepare meals to suit
your modern lifestyle.
FITNESS
I was shown a specialised training program
known as Time Under Tension. I had never
trained this way before and I could hardly
do one exercise, then Lulu… (OK damn it, it
was Lindy… as if you guys hadn’t worked it
out!!!!) Lindy then showed me how to breathe,
stand correctly and make your muscles do
the work in correct form. She was a pro
showing a rookie how to eat humble pie! By
the time we did the thigh workout I just about
collapsed and realised I had not continued my
knowledge of working out but rather I had just
hacked away at an old workout pattern that
had no doubt plateaued years ago.
The lesson here is to keep learning, keep
changing… and avoid skateboard parks! Well,
getting serious, we at Oxygen are committed
to providing the latest advice and if you have
the ears to hear, you will upskill with each
issue. The workout content and nutritional
advice is the best available and we hope
you enjoy every word. If however you need
skateboard lessons… I am your man!
