NEWSLETTER PARKTOWN HIGH SCHOOL FOR GIRLS Issue No. 9 Tyrone Avenue, Parkview, Johannesburg 2193 Tel: 011 593 5900 Fax: 011 486 1828 Email: postmaster@parktowngirls.co.za 23 May 2014 GENERAL SCHOOL NEWS “BRING BACK OUR GIRLS” CAMPAIGN FOR NIGERIAN SCHOOL GIRLS MINISTER OF BASIC EDUCATION’S VISIT OF APPRECIATION Mr Culling, Minister Angie Motshekga, Mrs Cereseto and Mr Mkhulise The Minister of Basic Education, Mrs Angie Motshekga, attended the school assembly today to express her appreciation to the Parktown Girls’ community for our campaign to motivate the global community to do all in their power to Bring Back the Girls. She encouraged us to join in the petition addressed to global leaders which she will hand over in early June. We should have over one thousand signatures by the end of the day to add to this initiative. The Minister was accompanied by the District Director for Johannesburg North, Mr Sipho Mkhulise, and the Cluster Manager, Mr Harry Culling. MATRIC DANCE The night of the Matric Dance was one of elegance. Every girl looked splendid and it was only when we were able to peel our eyes off the beautiful girls that we were able to appreciate the hall - a dreamy blue and white underwater scene that transported us to the place where two oceans meet. From start to finish the night was one where everyone showed their best moves on the dance floor. The food was delicious and it gave us enough energy to boogie the night away. Samantha’s (our RCL Chairperson) speech inspired us and filled all our hearts with Parktown Pride. We would like to thank everyone who made the evening a special one. It will truly be a night that we will never forget. After all, who could forget the dodgy waltzing and the teachers who sometimes had better moves than we Matrics. BLING DAY Potted Sports held their annual Bling Day competition on Wednesday 21 May. Coins were scrounged out from under car seats, the bottom of handbags and collected off parking lot floors. The theme this year was “The Arcade: The games we will never forget”. The register classes were challenged to make a picture of a classic electronic game, on the driveway, using the coins that they had collected. The girls were very enthusiastic in their participation this year as they took hundreds of selfies with the Bling Day mascot “Lil Bling”. Many stockings and dresses were covered in chalk and hands dirtied by the “copper” coins. The winning class H2 will be rewarded for their efforts with delicious cupcakes baked by the Committee. The whole school is congratulated for their fundraising efforts which will be donated to our deserving charity – Guild Cottage. COMMUNICATION This is a request to all parents / guardians to please notify the school (House Heads) if your daughter/ward is sick or has had an operation. This notification can be done by emailing the respective House Head (see below for names) at surname@parktowngirls.co.za. An original doctor’s certificate must still be handed in on the learner’s return (the email does not replace the original letter; it just allows the House Heads to be aware that there is a problem). This notification should not be done through the Communicator. HOUSE HEADS: Alseids (purple) Dryads (green) Hesperides (pink) Nereids (red) Oreads (yellow) Pleiades (white) – Miss Moreira – Mrs Davidson – Mrs Roos – Ms Singh – Mr Pasques – Mrs Carstens DISCIPLINE At a recent disciplinary hearing a learner was found guilty of fraud, bringing the school’s name into disrepute and defamation of character in terms of the South African School’s Act and the School’s Code of Conduct. This was after the learner physically changed an official mark on her report to a higher mark. She also forged a letter to a teacher, requesting that the report be reprinted using the changed mark. This is a very serious offence and the learner has been given a written warning, 20 hours of community service and compulsory extra lessons in the subject concerned (although this is part of the sanction it is not intended as a punishment but rather as a means to legitimately improve her mark in the subject). The learner did admit guilt and appeared to be genuinely sorry for what she had done. FIRST AID On 10 May the First Aid Team spent the day at school to learn new skills. We had two guest speakers. Mrs Gertzen, a physiotherapist, taught us many new ways to deal with sport injuries we encounter every day, such as cramps and torn muscles. Mrs Mok, a paramedic, talked to us about her experiences and gave us insight into her profession. It was very interesting and particularly useful to those amongst us who want to continue our training after school. We were able to question both Mrs Gertzen and Mrs Mok and would like to thank them for sharing both their time and their skills with us. We had fun together over lunch and felt better prepared to give our casualties the best possible care. We would also like to thank the Gertzen family for donating a new first aid kit to the school. It is the backpack variety and is particularly useful for running onto the sports field in an emergency. ACADEMIC NEWS MINTEK QUIZ Three learners, Klara Bunge, Laura Gertzen and Rebecca Houliston participated in the Mintek Quiz competition last week. It was a challenging competition. The girls did very well with Klara obtaining a gold certificate in the written round. Well done girls!
