‘Cobra Strike’ donates food in partnership By Chief Warrant Officer 2 John C. Roeder 1st Bn., 43rd ADA, 11th ADA Bde. The 1st Battalion, 43rd Air Defense Artillery, “Cobra Strike,” 11th Air Defense Artillery Brigade, supported a food drive for those in need at Burnet Elementary School Nov. 10. In late October, Soldiers from the battalion began collecting canned goods and other nonperishable items for families. Burnet Elementary is one of two elementary schools the battalion is in partnership with through the Partners in Education agreement between Fort Bliss and El Paso Independent School District. The Soldiers, staff and children have been working together to build good relationships and improve the community. Luz Lomeli, school counselor, is one of the people battalion representatives have been working with at the school. She is pleased with the support members of the battalion are giving the school and for the food they have donated. “It’s wonderful and amazing to be partnered with the community. It takes a village to raise a child and I really believe in that. It’s great to feel that support,” she said. Organizers planned to distribute the food this week, and they are working with members of the Parent Teacher Association to as- FORT BLISS BUGLE • November 19, 2015 • 9B semble food baskets. Spc. Chelsea Cobb, a chemical, biological, radiation, and nuclear specialist from Battery D was one of the battalion’s volunteers. “It was a very good turnout of volunteers and (there was) a good amount of food donated,” Cobb said. “It’s nice to help the community. I wish we did this stuff every day. I love kids and I had a great time being around them.” Lomeli said the donation is meaningful because she believes in helping children not just academically, but holistically. “A lot of time we focus on math and reading, but it is good to shift our focus on helping the needy also,” Lomeli said. Battalion and school representatives have more events planned throughout the school year. Photos by Chief Warrant Officer 2 John C. Roeder / 1st Bn., 43rd ADA, 11th ADA Bde. We lived in Germany and love their crafts – they’re beautiful. It’s the beginning of Christmas for us,” said Persall, accompanied by her husband Don. The Persalls stopped at the table of Monika and Ulrich Blatterspiel, who were selling handmade German Christmas decorations, and bought a Schwibbogen, a wooden, arched candle holder. The event included sales of traditional Photos by Wendy Brown / Fort Bliss Bugle Editor Kevin Weber, left, gets bratwurst fresh off the grill from Sven Gotthardt, right, at the 2015 German Christmas Bazaar Saturday at 747 Carter Road. Peter Schulz, right, points to a homemade cake for sale. For those who missed the event, the similar German School Christmas Market is from 2-6 p.m. Dec. 5 at 747 Carter Road. (Left) Monika and Ulrich Blatterspiel, who sell handmade wooden products under the name of Uli’s Woodworking, wrap up a Schwibbogen for a customer. German foods and all kinds of handmade crafts. The market started more than 40 years ago, said Franz Huber, a civilian employee with the German Air Force and treasurer of Aid for the Needy, a charity members of the German Air Force run. Although the GAF is in the process of leaving Fort Bliss, Huber said there are no immediate plans to stop the market. “We plan to continue as long as there’s demand by the public and support within the German Air Force, hopefully for another three or four years. It depends on how long we’re going to stay,” he said. The proceeds go to Aid for the Needy, and this year the money will go to the Reynolds Home, a shelter for homeless women and children in El Paso, Huber said. The money will help with utilities, supplies for the kitchen and restroom and savings toward a new home. “It’s always a pleasure supporting our community here at Fort Bliss, but also the El Paso community, and as long as they support us, we’ll gladly do this,” Huber said. Melanie Bradley, meanwhile, said she is sure to visit the bazaar every year, largely because of the Kunst Stoff booth Ingrid Binder runs. This year she had her eye on a handmade bag, but she appreciates all Binder’s products. “They’re cute and homemade and have the typical German designs,” she said. For those who missed the event, the similar German School Christmas Market is from 2-6 p.m. Dec. 5 at 747 Carter Road, and will include a Christmas performance by children who attend the school. Owner LTC (Ret) Richard Telles-Goins and all twenty employees are looking forward to the week of events leading up to Thanksgiving Eve. Shortly after prohibition was lifted, the Barrel House opened its second liquor store on El Paso street. Today, there are nine Barrel House store locations serving El Paso. It is noteworthy that the Barrel House liquor stores are the only locally owned and operated liquor chain in El Paso. Telles-Gions recognizes that the success and survival of the Barrel House for 80 years is largely due to commitment of its employees to provide its costumers with a large variety of merchandise in conveniently located stores that have a friendly service oriented atmosphere. We are proud to be competitive and even prouder to continue serving El Paso. TASTE DIFFERENT BRANDS OF LIQUOR! WIN PRIZES! PRODUCT TASTING Between 5-7pm PRIZES!!!! Nov. 25th at Barrel House #1 (2730 Montana Ave.) Tasting will vary from store to store each day. Brand specials, with savings of up to 70% off regular price. Prizes for the drawing will include: TVs, computer monitors, drones and more. Entry forms (available during tastings) will be given out during the week of Nov. 18–Nov. 25. One entry form per person/family, per store. Customers do not need to make a purchase and need not be present to be selected. Customers must be 21 years of age or older to enter the stores for purchases and tastings. Actual 1935 Henrold Post ad L O C A T I O N S : 1. 2730 Montana Ave (915)564-9999 2. 1344 N.
