El Son Entero was formed in Camaguey
in 1993 by the musician and director Luis
Stevenson Pimentel who named the group
after the famous sonnet ”El Son Entero”
written by the Cuban National Poet Nicolas
Guillen. Guillen was particularly proud of his
Camaguey heritage so this name perfectly
differentiated El Son Entero from other Cuban
bands.
Created using a traditional music line-up, El
Son Entero was formed as a septet with a
format that has existed since the evolution
of the music style Son, which emerged in the
1920s and includes congas, bongos, trumpet,
bass, guitar, tres, maraca and guiro.
El Son Entero considers itself protectors of
the Cuban Son, even though they perform
other genres that are important to Cuban
musical history such as: Danzon, Cha-ChaCha, Mambo, Guaracha, Bolero, Ballads, jazz
and Timba. As such they are contemporary
exponents of Cuban and international music.
The authenticity of El Son Entero is the
ability of the band members to compose
new musical themes following the inherited
patterns of the typical traditional Son. More
recently the band has started to explore new
sonorities and rhythms and an example of this
is its 4th album release entitled Será mi Swing.

The idea for Pasaje originated with Martin
Paten, director of the Castlemaine State
Festival, who proposed the combination of El
Son Entero’s musical repertoire and EGREM’s
film archives as a unique way of introducing
Australian audiences to the history of Cuban
music. The resulting work is a one-hour
performance that combines live music with
a series of archival image and audiovisual
footage and takes audiences on a journey
to the origins of Cuban music, stopping at
all the different musical genres that make up
the history of the island: the Son, Danzon,
Cha-Cha-Cha, Mambo, Guaracha, Bolero,
and Salsa. This is Cuban history told through
Cuban music played by Cubans.
The performance opens with the traditional
Cuban Son track Mamá Son de la Loma
composed by Miguel Matamoros, a clear
reference to the origin of Son. Following
this is a piece in the Danzon style which is
traditionally used for the Cuban national
dance and then several pieces in the popular
mambo dance style. A ballad and a love song
lead into several pieces dealing with more
serious social and religious issues, and all not
forgetting the much-loved and well-known
Salsa.

EGREM’s Information and Conservation
Centre of Musical Archives is the largest and
most important of its kind in Cuba preserving
professional recordings from four studios from
the 1940s until today, making almost 15,000
original recordings available to Cuban music
researchers in Cuba and abroad.
As a musical publishing house, EGREM
represents more than 1000 works covering
the generic and stylistic diversity that is
distinctive to Cuba. Their editorial catalogue
Auténtico Ediciones preserves the style
features of traditional music and folk
roots in works that respond to new ways
of understanding Cuban music. In this
phenomenal catalogue, the most famous
Cuban music genres can be found: rumba,
bolero, trova, guajira, cha-cha, son, changüí,
danzón; alongside works that respond to
contemporary trends: salsa, timba, pop, hiphop, rock, reggae, pop, fusion, jazz, chamber
and symphonic music.
EGREM’s recording studios have state-ofthe art technology. With a reputation as
the leading record company in Cuba they
facilitate the widespread demand for Cuban
music globally by sending the best of Cuban
music and artists around the world as well as
managing the annual Fiesta Cubana, which
presents and celebrates their culture through
music, dance, books, craft and food.
