Homemade...and fabulous! Piner’s Nursing and Guest Home 707-224-7925 • Skilled Nursing and Assisted Living May 2016 For serious Star Wars fans, May 4 has become a gleefully celebrated holiday. Special events, costume parties and movie showings mark the day. While most people are familiar with this collection of movies, here are some facts about them that you may not have been aware of: Older Americans Month 4– Star Wars Day 5– Cinco de Mayo 6– National Nurses Day 8– Mother’s Day 20– National Bike to Work Day The sound of the TIE Fighter engines is actually the sound of an elephant call mixed with the sounds of a car driving on wet pavement. 21– Armed Forces Day 30– Memorial Day Employee of the Month 2 While shooting the scene in the trash compactor, Mark Hamill held his breath for so long that he burst a blood vessel in the side of his face. They had to adjust framing while shooting the rest of the scene to avoid showing the blemish. In fact, some of them are still used by locals. Mark Hamill was in a bad car accident before filming started on Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back, causing severe facial trauma. The scene in which Luke Skywalker is mauled by a Wampa was added to account for the scarring on his face. Yoda was originally going to played by a monkey carrying a cane and wearing a mask. Also, his name was originally “Buffy”. Seriously. The word “ewok” is never said out loud in the Star Wars movies. (Continued on page 2) Sal loves a good puzzle! Page 2 The Pueblo Avenue Journal This was not the first time that Peggy LaRochelle had been recognized for her work at Piner’s. Her record as a previous recipient of the Employee of the Month award just proves that she consistently provides a very high quality of care. Peggy, our Physical Therapist, has been with Piner’s for Peggy LaRochelle about eight years. We conPhysical Therapist tinually receive positive feedback about her from customers. As a therapist, she has an incredible impact on the recovery of both our short and long-term Elders. She is skilled, respected, polite, and at the top of her professional game. We often receive referrals from doctors because of the outstanding service that Peggy provides. She always goes above and beyond (Continued from page 1) Luke’s lightsaber in Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi was originally going to be blue to match the lightsaber he lost in the previous film, but George Lucas was worried that it would confuse audiences, and thought a green lightsaber would look better, so he made the change. to help all of our Elders and staff, no matter what the task. She is a valuable member of our team! Peggy says that she loves the looks on the Elders’ faces when they finally achieve their goals, whether its finally being able to stand up on their own or being able to walk without help. “It’s a wonderful feeling!” she said. Peggy grew up in Ohio in a large family. She wanted to be a pediatrician, but her mother convinced her to go into physical therapy (it was widely thought at the time that female doctors could not have families). Today, Peggy loves spending time with her family. “We have too little time together, but cherish whatever time we can find to spend with each other.” Thank you, Peggy, for your smiles, your compassion, and for sharing your talents with our Elders. We are lucky to have you as part of the team! While filming lightsaber fight scenes, Ewan McGregor kept getting carried away and making the sounds of the weapon himself, which had to be removed in postproduction. We couldn’t believe our eyes! That’s because it was April Fools’ Day, and Stephanie was at her best. We were treated to tricky concoctions, like a Pizza Cake at the Guest Home and a Burger Cake with Apple Fries at the Nursing Home. Jello “drinks” with straws (completely ineffective straws, that is) just added to the trickiness. The rest of April consisted of various food holidays. We enjoyed special treats like banana bread, coffee cake, cinnamon croissants, and grilled cheese sandwiches. Special desserts like blueberry cobbler, pecan pie, and cherry cheesecake finished out our month in a sweet style. www.piners.net (707)224-7925 Lemon Meringue Pie In saucepan, mix sugar, cornstarch, flour and salt.
