Festival. We work year-round on the Festival, but you make
come alive. We are honored.
Welcome to the

This is the third year I have had the privilege of welcoming you
to Austin as chairman of our International Poetry Festival. It has
become more apparent to me that we are indeed a worldwide
community of poets converging here in Austin to listen and be
heard. This year with events swirling out of control in so many
parts of our planet it is more important co make our voices even
more eloquent. I hope this weekend affords all of us the opportunity to renew friendships and affirm our humanity with open
hearts.
This year denotes a year of change. We have adopted a new mission statement and a new set of goals. It is my hope that we can
live up to the fine words by changing our focus from a once a
year festival to a round the year continuation of diverse verse and
poetry. As we celebrate our diversity so should we celebrate our
love of the spoken and written word.

Together rve shall explore the relationship between traditional poetry from different cultures and social responsibility. Reviring our oral traditions should include a revival of the positive values that naturally accompanied them
in the past. Perhaps we can then together define the place and responsibility of the poet in modern society.

Singapore poct Yong Shu Hoong will take you on a quick tour of his country through a sampling of essential
Singaporean poetry both old and new. The session includes: writing your own merlion poem ('merlion' is a halflion, half-fish mythical creature adopted as Singapore's tourist symbol, much written about by Singapore poets),
reading of selected Singapore poetry and QCrA.

Almost any moment can be the basis for a great poem; it's dexterity with tone and angle which allows the poet to
carve open experience with insight and prccision. This workshop will include craft talk and a lot ot practical
pt-lctical calisthenics to increase your angular vocabulary.

Taalam Acey
An internationally-recognized performance poet, Taalam Acey u'as one of five poets selected to be featured in the
NewJersey Performing Arts Center's "Theater of the Spoken Word.' Acey has won many slam titles, including the
2000 Grand Slam Champion of London's Padding International Poetry Festival, the 2000 NewJersey Slammaster
and the Washington, D.C., Black Words Grand Slam Champion. He tours extensively throughout the world and
has produced several CDs, including When the Smoke Clearz, an indictment of the current state of hip-hop poetry
that was nominated for the 2002 Sundance Online Film Festival.

Tony Hoagland
Tony Hoagland was born in 1953 in Fort Bragg, North Carolina. His collections of poetry include What
Narcissism Means to Me (Gray'wolf Press, 2003); Donkey Gospel (1998), which received theJames Laughlin
Award; and Sweet Ruin (1992), chosen by DonaldJustice for the 1992 Brittingham Prize in Poetry and winner of
the Zacharis Award from Emerson College. His other honors include two grants from the National Endowment
for the Arts and a fellowship to the Provincetown Fine Arts Work Center. His poems and critical writings have

James Hoggard
James Hoggard is a poet, translator, essayist and novelist. Hoggard's poetry has been pralsed for its intensity and
fine sense of crafr. He has won awards and acclaim for his fiction, literary translation, and personal essays. A former NEA fellow and past president of the Texas Institute of Letters, his work has been published throughout the
US as well as in Canada, India, England, the Czech Republic, and Cuba. He is the Perkins-Prothro Distinguished
Professor of English at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas. The author of 17 books, his most
recent books are Wearing The River: New Poems (2005), Patterns of Illusion: Stories & A Novella (2002), and
Medea In Taos 6g Other Poems (2000). Hoggard has published three collections of translations of poems by Oscar
Hahn. The most recent one is Stolen Verses 6s Other Poems (2000). He was named co-winner of the Soeurette
Diehl Fraser Award for lirerary translation in 1999 for Alone Against The Sea: Poems From Cuba By Raul Mesa.
Yong Shu Hoong
Born in 1966 in Singapore, Yong Shu Hoong holds a Computer Science degree from the National University of
Singapore and an MBA from Texas A{sM University at College Station. He was shortlisted for the 1995 Singapore
Literature Prize and has authored three collections of poetry - Isaac (1997), dowhile (2002) and Frottage (2005).
Yong s poems were also included in various anthologies and journals, including SpinDrifter: The Island Literary
Journal (USA), Map of Austin Poetry ruSA), x magazine (UK), Stylus PoetryJournal (Australia), Dimsum (Hong

Zara Houshmand is an lranian-American writer and theatre artist. She has studied Balinese shadow puppetry and

Spoleto Festival. She was awarded the first commissioning grant from the National Theatre Translation Fund for

Marvin Kimbrough
Marvin Kimbrough, Ph.D., is a native of Austin and professor emeritus of Huston-Tillotson College where she
received the Exemplary Teaching Award. A Fulbright Award enabled her to study at the Sorbonne. She has
received the Prized Pen Award from the Texas Writers' League, as well as the Writer of the Month honor and the
Salute to African American Writers. She was also awarded the Austin Black Writers Award from the Austin
Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Her "On Writing Hat Poems" was animated by Francisca Talenta
and screened at che Guggenheim Theatre of New York and on PBS. Recently, she won Second Place for her poem
"Texas Izz," a contest sponsored by Poetry in the Arts. She is the author of three chapbooks: Even Frogs Can
Drown, Him-With-The-Square-Toes, and The Ghost of East Eleventh Street. Dr. Kimbrough has received a
Proclamation by the Ciry of Austin, the Heritage Award from the Texas Education Agency and a Resolution from
the State of Texas, House of Representatives. The Huston-Tillotson College International Alumni recently awarded her the Academic Achievement Award. She is Poet Laureate of St. James Episcopal Church.

Agnes Meadows
Agnes Meadows currently lives in London, has been a journalist, arts funder, freelance consultant, and is now a
Performance Poet. She has been glpsying around the world since she was 15, and has made a home in places as
diverse as Mexico, the Philippines, Australia, and Turkey. Her poetry is a reflection of her urban experience, the
things she has seen and felt both at home and overseas. Having worked with Indian Classical Dance for many
years, she has written and narrated shows for some of the UK's leading Indian Dancers, and toured with them in
the UK. Agnes has a growing reputation on the Performance Poetry scene both in London and other parts of the
UK, having toured throughout the country. She held rhe Farrago Slam Club's Best Performer Award in 1998 and
1999, and has slammed successfully both at home and abroad. In 1999 she began developing a solid international
reputation, and subsequently performed in the USA, Turkey, Spain, Palestine, and Israel. She has three times been
a Featured Poet with the Austin Internadonal Poetry Festival, giving performances and workshops all over Texas,
including readings in Spanish, drawing on the 3 years she lived in Mexico. At the 2003 AIPF she won the

Naomi Shihab Nye
Naomi Shihab Nye was born in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1952, to a Palestinian father and an American mother. She
received her B.A. from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, where she still resides with her family. She is the
author of numerous books of poems, including 19 Varieties of Gazelle: Poems of the Middle East (Greenwillow
Books, 2002), Fuel (1998), Red Suitcase (1994), and Hugging theJukebox (1982). She has tr.vice traveled to the
Middle East and Asia for the United States Information Agency promoting international goodwill through the
arts. Nye has received awards from the Texas Institute of Letters, rhe Carity Randall prize, and the Internatlonal

Carmen Tafolla
Carmen Tafolla is an internationally published poet, writer and performance artist. A native of San Antonio's
West-Side Barrios, she has performed in Germany, England, Mexico, Canada, Spain, and throughout the U.S. She
has five books of poetry: Get Your Tortillas Together, Curandera, Sonnets to Human Beings (which won the UCI
Narional Chicano Poetry Award), La Isabela de Guadalupe y Otras Chucas, and her latest, Sonnets and Salsa. The
author of numerous short stories, screenplays, and children's works, she is also currently co-authoring the biography of famed labor organizer Emma Tenayuca. She also co-authored a script with filmmaker Sylvia Morales for a

awarded the Art of Peace Award by the President's Peace Commission of St. Mary's University for writing which
contributed to peace and justice. Tafolla presently lives with her family in a lOO-year-old house in San Antonio,

Poet and translator Sholeh Wolp€ was born in Persia but spent most of her teen years in the Caribbean and

Kimberley D. Taylor, (Knowtorius 13) was born on the Capricorn-Aquarius cusp in San Antonio, Texas. She is a
member of Neo-soldiers Spoken Word Collective and Harlem s Byrd, both based in Austin, Texas. Her style, is
heavily influenced by the Harlem Renaissance and the Black Arts Movement. Ms. Taylor has placed in slam competitions and performed in venues across Texas and Missouri. She is currently planning a compilation of poetry

Rowena Silver is an editor of Epicenter, a Literary Magazine ; lives in Riverside, California with her dog Brodsky;

Celeste is at once Wife, Mother, and Doctoral Student at the University of Texas at Austin in the department of
communication studies. She is also anethnographer and prose writer and will introduce her first volume of prose

Kristi is a geeky bum who has kicked herself out of more organizations than she has joined. She won the very first
poetry 'slam' in Austin and then decided that raising her own food and taking care of rhe land was more imporranr

and so I asked the doc one visit,
I said to him "Doc, just what is it?"
He then answered me with great aplomb,
he said"WelI, it's ground-up roosters' comb,
mixed with some salts and other sruff.
It's thick
as

to push it with a needle in
to places where the space is thin."

added to our airplane flight
improves our comfort and pleasure.
My bag weighed a litrle bit more

It contained only twenty-eight pieces
making up nineteen nuts altogether.
Sometimes they give you pretzels
instead,
a
total of ten little bits,
no fat or vitamins and very few calories.
This plane's not exactly the futz.
I hope they feed their engines better
than we who paid for our passage,
or we'Il have to deplane before we arrive
due to lack of airline gassage.

and failed dreams.
Dad tasted dry dust and birter,
scorched failures
in his entrepreneurial venrures.
His life, hard and rough-edged
with unrealized desires,
always pressed into hor,
clammy daydreams that crumbled
like the dry, red clay dust
ofhis ancestors.
At some unknown sunset,
I will enter that red, clay earth, too,
the tiny piece of the world
that I will share with him,
and all the other ancestors
who went before me,
forever dreaming,
blanketed in my
ancestral dirt.
