CZECH AVIATION 2011
Dear exporters and entrepreneurs,
The current world requires much greater efforts in the
field of foreign trade and entrepreneurship in general. We all without exception face the consequences
of the financial crisis. The challenges that Czech
entrepreneurs have to deal with at home become
even harder in the global market.
The world has been globalised for some time now
and as a result changes are much less predictable
than in previous years. These turbulences must be
seen as challenges of opening markets. We must not
baulk, on the contrary, we must search for opportunities and use all possibilities for our entrepreneurs
to the maximum extent possible, be active when identifying and
extending export opportunities with good prospects for the whole
Czech economy, and approach any potential business possibilities in a sophisticated way.
In recent years every company manager – no matter whether
their company is small or large, Czech or international – has
performed rationalization of costs. Firms currently consider all
their expenses and count every penny and the state does the
same. The support to exporting activities must be provided with
top efficiency.
We must help Czech companies to come out of this uneasy
crisis period with their heads held high, with an offer of promising
opportunities of participation in international trade, with secured
trade outlets and an operational foreign network.
Dear Exhibitors and Customers,
I am honoured to address you on behalf of the
agency responsible for running the Specialized
Exhibitions and Fairs Project, CzechTrade,
which has spent the last thirteen years supporting mainly small and medium−sized Czech
firms as they seek to establish business operations on foreign markets.
Many of you are already familiar with our
services, and I am confident that you have
transformed their added value into export success. Our trump card, unmatched by other
similar entities, is our network of experts in 33 countries. Their contacts and knowledge of the specific local
situation can be your springboard to both the correct
choice of market and business development in a particular country. We strive to provide our clients with a personal
service; we ask them for as much specific feedback as
possible and, based on this output, we modify the way
we work. Statistics revealing the growing business of
our clients prove that we are following the right path. We
accept this as a success but also as a major commitment.
A commitment which compels us to keep developing
our services for exporters and to respond flexibly to their
needs, developments on the global markets and the international trade situation.
Every year the Ministry of Industry and Trade in
cooperation with other institutions systematically
supports numerous presentations of our exporters at
exhibitions and fairs abroad. There are fewer funds
available and it is true these days more than ever
that you get what you pay for but our task is to try to
get more than what we pay for, that is, we must offer
the entrepreneurs the same services with the limited
amount of financial resources we have.
The gains from participation of Czech companies
in fairs are obvious beyond any doubt: surveying
of competitive markets, identification of business
opportunities, acquisition of direct contacts followed
by cost saving electronic communication, presentation of one’s own business activities and products, adaptation of
the relation between the quality of our products and their prices
to competition, finding of power-efficient and simpler production
processes respecting environmental standards and modern
technological trends. All this leads to the broadening of outlook of
companies and to new contracts developing their life cycles.
I am glad I may welcome all exhibition and fair participants and to
encourage them on their way to foreign markets. I highly regard
their active approach and support their steps. Good luck!
Martin Kocourek
Minister of Industry and Trade of the Czech Republic
The economic recession is just one of the
factors that have seen enterprises become
much more discerning about quality than they
used to be, and the standard of services provided by the State is no exception in this respect.
Therefore, it is more important than ever for all
those who genuinely want to help our exporters to see beyond the confines of their own
organizations and work together to raise the
bar of the State’s export promotion services.
The Specialized Fairs and Exhibitions Project,
hand in hand with the cooperation provided by
its main partners – the Ministry of Industry and
Trade, the Economic Chamber and CzechTrade – will be
both a great opportunity and a major test in this regard.
CzechTrade, already on a par with Europe’s leading
export agencies, certainly wants to be part of that trend.
If you like our work and want to continue conquering new
markets with us and share your achievements and experience, I believe that, together, we will have plenty to
offer the world in the 21st century. I am confident that
we will bring back home not only Olympic gold medals,
but also the joy of successfully engaging in business.
Ivan Jukl
Director General, CzechTrade

CZECH AVIATION 2011
Tradition and perspective
The foundations of Czech aviation were laid before the First
World War, nearly a century ago.
A sustained development in all its areas, though, did not
take place until the independent Czechoslovak Republic was
founded in 1918 with the first Czech aircraft manufacturers
successfully building upon the excellent reputation of the local
machine industry.
Over the course of the next several decades (with the exception
of the Second World War, during which the independent aircraft
industry ceased to exist) the Czech aircraft industry mainly focused
on producing small transportation and military aircraft as well as
a considerable number of outstanding training, sport and touristic light aircraft designs, including some agricultural utility
aircraft.
Over the last century, the Czech aircraft industry grew to
produce nearly three hundred different types of aircraft, mostly
powered by locally made engines.
Many of these aircraft have been successfully sold abroad
and operated and flown on all continents with the exception of
the Antarctic.
Since late 1970’s, Czech experts have been actively participating in the development of instruments and satellites for space
research. Both small and large Czech aircraft companies alike
now participate in the continuing efforts of the aircraft and space
industry.
The high potential and creativity of this industry’s work force
is very apparent in this fifth issue of the catalogue appropriately
titled Czech Aviation 2011.
Nonetheless, we are proud to note that a majority of the
reviewed aircraft are light aircraft focused solely on sports, recreation, tourism and other peaceful purposes.
The year 1990 saw the beginnings of a new development of
their production, and now these aircraft are among the most
wide-spread in their category throughout the world.
In addition to these aircraft, the Czech industry still offers successful training and tourist “classical” category aircrafts as well
as smaller transportation aircraft, now growing in popularity.
The Czech Republic places great emphasis on development and progress in the aviation and airspace industry;
these are fields that hold immense potential for those with
the appropriate share of knowledge, skills, and expertise, and
in which even a small country may play a crucial role in the
international sphere.

PARAGLIDERS
Paragliders of the Czech manufacturers
There are several very successful companies in the
Czech Republic, developing and producing paragliders.
Every year they introduce a range of new types, whose
performance and other features surpass the previous
one. These companies have given wings to three thou-
sand paraglider pilots in the Czech Republic alone and
other tens of thousands the world over. This catalogue
lists currently manufactured single-place paragliders,
top-notch racing paragliders, tandem paragliders and
many kinds of special paragliders.
The suitability of the given type of paraglider for the specific skill level of its potential pilot is shown on a colour scale. The scale
shows the range of skill from an absolute beginner to the most experienced pilot. The sizes of the canopy are shown according to
their respective manufacturers’ methods of designation. The weights listed are the take-off ones (weight of pilot including full equipment, weighing from 15 to 20 kg for free paragliding and 40 kg for flying with paramotors).

Company Galaxy High Technology,
s.r.o., is a prominent European producer of parachute ballistic rescue systems aimed for ultralights, light sport aircraft, unmanned Aircraft and
experimentals ranging up to speed of 350 km/h.
The company exports 90% of its production to all
continents.Overall year production represents ca.
700 units of 53 different modifications. Thanks to its
long tradition, since 1984, the systems GRS are constantly updated and enhanced. Our company does
not pursue development of parachutes only for
high speeds, but during the long testing the company pay special attention to quick opening in low
speeds enabling a safe rescue from lowest possible heights. Ever growing number of customers
testifies not only to the product quality but about
a good marketing and service as well. Customers
like to hear our slogan:
“CHANCE FOR RESCUE
FROM ANY HEIGHT”
Since 1994 the U.S.H. Production of Rescue
Systems is developing, producing and providing after sales support to the ballistic
deployed parachute systems. They use for
their operation energy of a rocket motor.
While the majority of USH’s BR systems
were installed in the UL aircraft, currently
a system for aircraft of the LSA category, so
widespread in the USA, is being developed.
It has to cater for the higher, 600 kg weight.
The parameters and quality of the already
developed and approved products of the
USH are being constantly upgraded. They
are also approved by the Czech LAA authority and by the German DULV, while the pyrotechnic components are also approved and
conform to Czech and German regulations.
Since 1994 the USH regularly participates at
the Aero Friedrichshafen fair.

AUTHORITIES
LAA ČR Microlight Certification Process
Microlight Technical Certification is one of the key LAA ČR activity.
65 LAA ČR Type Certificates have been issued since 1990!
Certification Administration
• The LAA ČR system of proving the airworthiness is based on
technical inspectors. For the three-axis control UL category
there are 24 appointed inspectors.
• The technical inspectors are appointed and managed by the
Chief Technical Inspector, who is an employee of the LAA ČR.
• The inspectors are not employees of the LAA ČR and their duty
is carried out on the voluntary (activist) basis.
• The inspectors are spread regionally accross the Czech
Republic.
• The inspectors file their registers of aircraft and have allotted
their identification letters in the registration mark.
LAA ČR recognises 3 types of technical certificates:
„Z“
a technical certificate (TC) of airworthiness of a prototype of an
aeroplane, built by an individual builder. The documentation of
the basic calculation is required; a building process supervision
by the technical inspector and at least strength test of the wing
is mandatory.
Validity of the TC = 1 year
„P“
a technical certificate of airworthiness of an aeroplane that was
granted a LAA ČR type certificate. A comprehensive range of
stress (load) tests is carried out and the aircraft is tested up to
ultimate (maximum calculated) loads. The approval procedure
is carried out as an opponency. The final decision lies with the
Technical commission of the LAA, where 10 top class specialists
convene and decide. The technical commission is managed by
the Chief Technical Inspector. The complete documentation is
filed in the LAA ČR archive. The result of the process is the Type
certificate.
Validity of the TC = 2 years
„A“
a technical certificate of airworthiness of an aeroplane, amateur/home-built according to a documentation of aeroplane that
was granted a Type certificate. The documentation has to be
purchased officially from the Type certificate holder. The technical
inspector carries out the supervision during the building process;
a wing stress test to the maximum operational (limit) load is
always required.
Validity of the TC = 2 years.
38
LAA ČR Concept of Certification Stress/Strength Tests
• Serve to prove the basic structural strength of all primary
structure parts of the aircraft, such as wing, fuselage, empennage etc.
• Each structure has to pass a system of strength tests covering
the requirements of the regulations to at least the calculated
limit loads.
• The tests are carried out by the manufacturer under the supervision from the LAA ČR.
• Simple loading methods are used.
• The tests are carried out until the calculated limit stress/load
is achieved.
• The visual checks and measurements of the deformation are
carried out too.
• Wings ultimate strength (loading to destruction) tests are preferred to ascertain the actual strength reserves of the airframe
– for „P“ Technical Certificate.
• The failed critical points of structures are often appropriately
strengthened and the tests are repeated to find eventual other
critical points.
• The tests results are in case of failures compared to the design
calculations and thus they serve to precise design calculation
methods.

caused by: - insufficient space in the cockpit
- flaps lever is too long or in improper position and therefore abrupt flaps setting
The positions of the electrical flaps depending on the aircraft model are easy programmable by everyone. There are only 2 buttons on the backside of the control unit for programming the requested
flaps positions. When the flap positions are programmed, the compact electrical actuator brings the
flaps in the correct position by a simple change of the lever position.
The LED-indicator of the last flaps position lights until the next resp. requested position is reached.
During this time flashes the LED-indicator of the requested position given by the lever. If the force
exceeds the programmed limit (e.g. by flaps setting during too high flight speed), the flaps return
to the previous, lower position. Also reaching of this flaps position and the activation of the security
system is indicated by the LED-indicator and so is the pilot advised to his mistake.
Because of reliability reason, for the changing the flaps position instead of an electrical switch we
have used a mechanical lever which position is checked by 4 Hall-sensors (non contact switch).

The ARTI - Aviation Research and Test Institute (VZLÚ - Výzkumný a zkušební
letecký ústav) develops and supplies some special scientific instruments
and equipment designed to be used for experiments and measurements
undertaken in the space. Among its most important tasks belongs the
development of the high-precision micro-accelerometers for measuring the
extremely small accelerations in the spacecraft. These very accurate devices
enable to measure the effects of non-gravitational forces on the parameters
of trajectory of the artificial satellites, orbiting the Earth. Subsequently the
processed data enable to produce and make more accurate the dynamic
models of the Earth’s thermosphere. Currently the ARTI/VZLÚ participates in
the SWARM project, part of the “Earth observation “programme, supported
by ESA. The project is devoted to the research of the magnetic field of the
Earth and the near space environment, with the EADS Astrium concern
serving as the main implementer and prime contractor. The purpose of the
order for the ARTI/VZLÚ is a supply of one engineering model and three flight
examples of the micro-accelerometer for measuring accelerations of low
frequencies and amplitudes. Besides the SW also the EGSE - a ground test
unit - is included in the scope of the task.

Space research and development have
a long tradition in the Czech Republic starting back in October 1969. In 1978, the
first Czech astronaut Vladimir Remek spent
6 days on-board of the Salyut 6 orbital station and Czechoslovakians thus became
the third nation to enter the space. The first
Czech satellite Magion 1 reached its orbit
in October 1978. The Automated Stabilised
Platform was the most sophisticated space
equipment manufactured in Czechoslovakia.
It was used on the Soviet Vega Spacecrafts
in 80’s and also installed on the Mir orbital
station. Second half of 90’s brought increasing level of cooperation with the European
Space Agency (ESA), which culminated in
November 2008 when the Czech Republic
became the ESA full member. Starting from
the 2010, the Czech Republic is also full
member of EUMETSAT.
The ESA membership has opened new opportunities for Czech companies and institutions
engaged in space. The Czech Republic has
committed 45.6 million Euro to the ESA programmes until 2013. Space related research
and innovation projects are also eligible to
get funding from the Czech Grant Agency,
the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Czech
Academy of Sciences and universities.
The Czech Space Office (CSO) is the national information and advisory centre for
space opportunities and activities in the
Czech Republic and serves the national
space community as the central contact
point for communication with ESA. The CSO
has close relations with the Association of
the Aviation Manufacturers and Czech Space
Alliance, two bodies where larger companies
and SMS, respectively, of the Czech space
industry are organised.
The space industry is one of the new emerging sectors in the Czech Republic. Several
Czech manufacturing companies have already a contract to supply mechanical and/or
electronic parts and sensors for satellites.
Apart from companies already approved to
deliver to the space, there are many with
a potential to transfer their technological
skills into the space sector. The main Czech
hardware competencies include materials
thermal processing; high-precision mechanical parts and assemblies; PCB assembling
in a clean room; mechanical, structural and
environmental testing; high-quality opticalmechanical/-electronic devices; telecommunication systems; robotic systems and
nanotechnology products. In the field of
software development, the major skills cover
vehicles health monitoring, flight/ground segment software, complex software solutions,
solutions for safety-critical systems, digital
image processing and signal processing.

Brno University of Technology
in the aerospace research and development
The aviation education has a long−standing tradition at the universities
of Brno; it brought, besides e.g. the development of the turbine aero
engines, also some pioneering aircraft designs and high−performance
gliders of the thirties and sixties.
In 1982 at the Brno University of Technology the Aviation Department
has been re-established and in 1993 the University had founded its
Institute of Aerospace Engineering (IAE), led by prof. Ing. Antotnín
Píštěk, CSc., as a part of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.
IAE belongs to very few institutes in Czech Republic, who offer
university degree study in aerospace. It covers wide range of speciali
zations in 2 master´s and 1 bachelor´s study programmes. The Institute
offers master degree in "Aircraft Design" and in "Aeronautical Traffic",
bachelor´s study for "Professional Pilots" and also the doctoral (PhD)
studies. The work of the IAE is from the beginning aimed at a close
cooperation with companies of the Czech aerospace industry.
In 2000 the Aerospace Research Centre (ARC) has been created, based on the programme of research centres of the Ministry
of Youth, Education and Sports of the Czech Republic (MŠMT). The
Aerospace Research Centre's work is supervised by a fifteen−member
council, with an absolute majority of industry representatives, thus the
Centre ensures a transfer of research results to the aviation industry
and the feedback of the industry knowledge to the research sites.
The activities of the IAE and ARC are aimed at aerodynamics, modern technologies and materials, systems' reliability, hydraulic systems,
space research and at the aeronautical structures, strength and life
of aircraft and also at the economic aspects of the aircraft development.
An important asset of the IAE is the test facility with the Czech CAA
certificate for static and fatigue testing of aircraft structures.
The wide scope of work is documented by some of the many tasks in
which the IAE participated or participates. Here belong e.g. the:
● The development of the KP−2U Sova ultralight and its further upgrading.
●Collaboration in the development of the Aero Ae-270.
●Collaboration in the development of the JA600 Light Sport Aircraft
for Jihlavan Airplanes.

The
Czech Republic lies land−locked
among many countries in the very
heart of Europe. Thanks to its location
it experienced many dramatic moments
during the ages, but it also became
a meeting point of European cultures,
growing, welcoming and giving home to
many world−class thinkers, writers, architects, painters, sculptors and musicians.
One meets their ideas materialised in
works of art gracing the historic Czech
towns and cities, castles and chateaux
as well as country manors. Paying a visit
to the capital of Prague, to Moravian
Kroměříž, to South Bohemian Český
Come and fly-in to see ...

Krumlov and many other places is therefore akin to taking a living arts history
course, it is a meeting with beauty.
Also the nature of Czechia is something to behold − it offers deep forests
with lurking game, slopes of mountains,
both steep ranges and gentle uplands,
fertile basins and lowlands around curving
rivers, a fisher's paradise. The vast mirrors
of ponds and deep river dam reservoirs
teem with fowl and fish.
Flying over the landscape of Czech
Republic you will enjoy the kaleidoscopic
change of shapes and colours − beneath
the wings pass the large, neatly tilled fields,
apple orchards, pictu−resque villages and
colourful cities with parks and gardens. It is
without doubt these romantic vistas, offered
by flying over our lands, contributed to
make flying so popular activity in our country − we simply feel that the air is our sea.
In the Czech Republic there are nine
international aerodromes, over fifty general aviation airfields, and over hundred and fifty sports airfields and airstrips, including the ultralight ones.
In the mountains there are many summits, ridges and slopes with launch
platforms and ramps for paragliding and
hang gliding. In the recent years, the
free flying over Czechia has attracted
many pilots from abroad, in addition
to the already hooked domestic aviators. Many Czech airfields now offer
a good accommodation for aviation
tourists, providing at the same time the
technical base for the needs of their
winged mounts…
The Czech Republic is a beautiful and
friendly country, both for the land−bound
tourists and for those who would prefer
the bird's eye perspective and free motion
in the blue sky. It is as easy as just flying
in and seeing for yourself …

There are several groups of individuals
and companies in the Czech Republic
dedicated to building replicas, renovating
vintage aeroplanes and flying with them.
These include:
Martin Kindernay's Flying Circus in Hradec
Králové,
Metoděj Vlach Aeroplane Endowment Fund
in Mladá Boleslav,
Czech & Slovak Old Timer Glider Club,
Czechoslovak Historic Flight
and Heritage of Flying Legends.
There are also several individual enthusiasts
who build their own vintage aeroplane
replicas and many others who fly them.
The following photographs were taken
during airshows as well as leasure flying.
As in the automobilism also in the aviation many enthusiasts
covet the veteran and vintage machines. Some restore them,
often to a state better than the original series production veteran enjoyed when it left the production shops, some build
the replicas true to the original that disappeared long ago,
according to old blueprints and often with almost detective
finding of information. Some of the replicas belong to the category of ultralight aircraft. In Czechia this activity is a domain
not only of entusiastic individuals and volunteer groups, but
also of small, highly specialised firms. All of them repair,
restore or build from stratch their machines for their owners'
personal pleasure as well as for education and enlightenment of the general public in matters of technical beauty.
The vintage sailplane enthusiasts aggregate in the Czech

POTC (Oldtimer gliding Club) and organize their own aviation contests. The restorers, builders and pilots of historic
powered airplanes meet the public at air shows organised
from spring till autumn at many airfelds around Czechia and
also at the historic aircraft fly−ins. Their dexterity and profound knowledge of their matter has been used to advantage
several times by film−makers to build replicas, both flying and
otherwise, for historic motion pictures.
Thanks to effort of hundreds of these enthusiasts it is possible to see in the sky, besides the sleek and sometimes
mundane all metal or all−composite "spam can", also the old
and "hairy" classic aeroplanes built of wood and rag. They
shine with a special beauty and despite their antique (or
antiquated) looks most of them fly pretty well.
