Reflecting upon our many and exciting personal experiences we both fell the same need: to dedicate part of our time, energy and resources to help those who were lacking the most valuable gift you can possess: health. We knew that in some countries athletes are very engaged in charity and volunteer work, often within an organized structure. At the base of the activities of the Foundation is love for life, a real passion for sport as a cultural and ethic phenomenon and the desire to operate concretely and to always be transparent. The Vialli and Mauro Foundation mission is to finance the Amiotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and Cancer Research. In november 2008 the Vialli and Mauro Foundation joined forces with Fondazione Cariplo, Fondazione Telethon and AISLA (Italian Association on Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) to found AriSLA – The Agency for Research on Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) . We decided we wanted to do the same, ideally exploiting our twin passions: football and golf. Thus was born a dream, which became reality when we founded the Fondazione Vialli e Mauro per la ricerca e lo sport, a non‐profit foundation. We were fortunate to benefit from the help and advice of many who were crucial in the early stages of our project. To them goes our most sincere thanks. ARISLA intends to catalyse the researches aimed at the development of new therapies for ALS in Italy by financing selected projects and giving services to the researchers. The mission of the agency is to offer ALS patients increased hopes of cure and an improved quality of life. Gianluca Vialli e Massimo Mauro 3 Why ALS Amiotrophyc Lateral Sclerosis OBJECTIVES 2010 Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis is a progressive neurodegenerative disease caused by the degeneration of motor neurons, the nerve cells in the central nervous system that control voluntary muscle movement. The condition is often called Lou Gehrig's disease in North America, after the New York Yankees baseball icon, who was diagnosed with the disease in 1939 and died from it in 1941, at age thirty‐seven. Today, renowned physicist Stephen Hawking, British historian Tony Judt, guitar virtuoso Jason Becker and former Italian footballer Stefano Borgonovo are among the best‐known living ALS patients. The disorder causes muscle weakness and atrophy throughout the body as both the upper and lower motor neurons degenerate, ceasing to send messages to muscles. The patient may ultimately lose the ability to initiate and control all voluntary movement; bladder and bowel sphincters and the muscles responsible for eye movement are usually (but not always) spared. Objective n. 7 (2008) Financing of a budget for one position as neurology university at the ALS Centre of Turin on the I Neurological Clinic of the University of Turin.
