More magnificent than ever. The arrival of Queen Mary 2 Remastered. 1974. The UK faces economic crisis and a hung parliament. Set in the engine rooms of Westminster, James Graham’s This House strips politics down to the practical realities of those behind the scenes: the whips who roll up their sleeves and on occasion bend the rules to shepherd and coerce a diverse chorus of MPs within the Mother of all Parliaments. Queen Mary 2 returns, Remastered. The US welcomes our Remastered flagship. The morning of 23 June 2016 saw the culmination of years of extensive planning and meticulous design, of thousands of conversations with our guests and, finally, of over one million man hours of labour in dry dock. This was the day Queen Mary 2 arrived in Southampton from Hamburg flanked by Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria. Our flagship had returned home, Remastered. O nce she had berthed, invited guests walked along red carpets that ran through the terminal, and stepped on board eager to see the magnificent results. Alison Clixby, Cunard’s Director of Hotel Design & Projects, and her team have researched, designed and overseen the magnificent transformation of Queen Mary 2’s interiors to truly stunning effect. Sophisticated and modern, they are enriched with many Art Deco echoes of the original Queen Mary, not least in the patterns that adorn the 72,000 square metres of new carpets, enough to cover ten football pitches. Specially invited guests admired the new Carinthia Lounge, the reconfigured Kings Court, Queens Grill and Princess Grill restaurants, and stepped into the new-look suites and staterooms. Those who were among the first to see our flagship in all her Remastered glory included fashion designers Dame Zandra Rhodes and David Sassoon, Mariya Dykalo, Creative Director of Aspinal of London – one of our new retail partners – and Prince’s Trust Ambassadors Anna Wilson-Jones, Luke Evans and Christopher Biggins. One of the highlights of the day was the unveiling of a painting by Robert Lloyd. The highly regarded marine artist had visited Kings Court the Blohm + Voss shipyard in Hamburg to capture our flagship during the project, surrounded by cranes and swarming with workers. The canvas measuring around 5 feet by 4 feet was presented in the Queens Room. It will take up permanent residence on board, being one of 4,000 new pieces of artwork. Remastered at a glance: 1,000,000 man hours of labour in dry dock 72,000 ‘Sophisticated and modern, her interiors are enriched with many Art Deco echoes of the original Queen Mary’ square metres of new carpets 4,000 new pieces of artwork It was a day of celebration and fanfare that mirrored the occasion in Southampton, with a number of specially invited guests present to welcome her. Arnold Donald, CEO of Carnival Corporation & plc, led the tributes, commenting: “More than any other ship in our Carnival Corporation fleet of more than one hundred ships, Queen Mary 2 is the most famous, the most recognisable and certainly the most unique.” And she now looks even better than ever. C 1 Queen Mary 2 Remastered As the event drew to a close, guests disembarked and gathered in a marquee on the quayside to bid farewell to Queen Mary 2 as she prepared to set sail for New York, New England and Canada. To celebrate our flagship’s role as a transatlantic liner, an American and a British bar served cocktails to guests. Following a toast to Queen Mary 2 Remastered, our flagship replied with a whistle, before the British Imperial Military Band, resplendent in their red tunics, and a confetti cannon added a final burst of pageantry to a truly wonderful occasion. A s travelling with pets has proved incredibly popular, we’ve introduced twelve extra kennels on board, taking the number to 24. In fact, we’ve expanded the entire kennels area, with a refurbished owners’ lounge, a new indoor pet play area and an enlarged outdoor dog walking area. All in the detail. We’ve added new dog beds, new blankets for each kennel, new toys, improved dog and cat jackets and stainless steel dog bowls sporting a Cunard logo. A traditional English lamppost and an American fire hydrant will ensure canines from both sides of the Atlantic will feel comfortably at home. Of course, our focus on safety extends to all our guests, and Queen Mary 2 is even equipped with dog and cat life jackets. Cunard ships have long invited guests to travel with their beloved pets, and Queen Mary 2 remains the only passenger ship to offer dedicated kennels at sea. So, during the Remastering of our flagship in June, we also enhanced the experience for our four-legged guests. Exclusive pet-themed artwork. We commissioned artist Karen Katon-Oprey, daughter of Queen Mary 2’s Captain Kevin Oprey, to produce eight original ‘Posing Pooches’ illustrations to grace the improved kennels. These fun designs feature scenes around London, New York and on board Queen Mary 2, and are now on display in the Pet Play area and the Owner’s Lounge. Karen has also designed new pet name cards for each of the individual kennels. Designer cats and dogs. For an extra dash of glamour, Cunard has partnered with Barbour® to offer smart accessories such as jackets, collars and leads, which are available to purchase on board. C When the Duke of Windsor visited the original Queen Mary’s 26 kennels, he remarked it was a shame there was no lamppost. One was duly added, and Cunard even installed a fire hydrant for American dogs on QE2. Originally the butcher was responsible for walking the dogs on board, although this duty passed to Bellboys in later years. 6 | CUNARDER August 2016 Credit: Marc Dalangin Did you know…? A Cunard o’ the Clyde, a celebration in tartan. s part of Queen Mary 2 Remastered, we sent 21 of our Queens Grill butlers to undertake International Hotel Butler Training with the world-renowned South African Butler Academy (SABA). The prestigious academy offers a rigorous seven-star training programme, encouraging a level of contemporary service which goes above and beyond the expected standards. Congratulations to our butlers for completing the course. We’re sure their success will further elevate the already-exceptional Cunard Queens Grill experience. C Iconic brands on board. Y Cunard’s long and proud association with the Clyde has now been immortalised in unique style – with our very own tartan, called Cunard o’ the Clyde! T he pattern has been created by Lochcarron of Scotland, whose own heritage stretches back to 1892. They are known around the world for fine woven fabrics, exclusive knitwear, contemporary accessories and Highland wear, all designed and produced in the Scottish Borders. Our tartan has been granted official status by the Scottish Register of Tartans, and is a fitting way to commemorate our association with the Clyde, a river so closely woven into our history. And like so many of the iconic Cunard ships constructed along the Clyde’s banks, the tartan itself is, of course, a majestic vision of red, black and white (left). You’ll find Lochcarron of Scotland in the shops on Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria. Its range of accessories includes bags and purses adorned with our crest as well as a scarf and a men’s wallet featuring the exclusive Cunard o’ the Clyde tartan. C Please note: the luggage range in the photo is not available on board. ou might just find shopping on board Queen Mary 2 even more tempting now. The Mayfair Shops are home to a collection of prestigious brands whose heritage and reputation is recognised the world over. During the crossing, there were Q&A sessions with David Gainsborough-Robert and Julien’s Auctions’ Founder and CEO, Darren Julien, and Executive Director, Martin Nolan. There was also a rotating daily exhibition of Marilyn Monroe memorabilia, with an exclusive chance to bid on selected items ahead of the general auction in November. It marked the start of a partnership with South Downs College Waterlooville to find eight motivated and committed candidates to work and train as apprentice chefs on board Cunard and P&O ships from September. It promises to be a fantastic opportunity for the chosen eight, and we’re delighted to be supporting the development of talented young people in and around our home port in this way. On 21 April 2016, Her Majesty The Queen celebrated her 90th birthday, and we were in a celebratory mood on our ships. After all, we love a royal occasion here at Cunard. W e thought it fitting to toast the day by serving a Gin & Dubonnet on board, Her Majesty’s favourite tipple. We had specially created an alternative cocktail too, a summery British inspired blend, which included Pimm’s, Spumante and fresh strawberries. Clyde and she was even by her mother’s side for the launch of Queen Elizabeth in 1938 – her very first Cunard event at the tender age of twelve. It means she is the only person to have attended the launch of each of our three ships to bear the name Queen Elizabeth. While each of our ships sent their congratulations to Buckingham Palace, the Captain and crew of Queen Elizabeth, which Her Majesty named, had their own special message to share – as you can see from this fabulous photograph taken on the way to Salalah, Oman during her World Voyage. And so to June and The Queen’s official birthday celebrations. Saturday 11 June saw all the majestic pomp and pageantry of the Trooping the Colour ceremony around The Mall and Buckingham Palace – and we were there in spirit. The Massed Bands of the Guards Division, in scarlet tunics with bearskin caps, left Horse Guards Parade followed by Her Majesty, playing the Mauretania March, composed by T. Duffy for the legendary Cunard liner in 1908. As well as launching Queen Elizabeth in 2010, Her Majesty also launched QE2 in 1967 on the ‘11 June saw all the majestic pomp and pageantry of the Trooping the Colour ’ As communities came together in celebration that weekend at street parties up and down the land, we joined in too. On Sunday 12 June, while Queen Mary 2 was going through her extensive refit, we held our own ‘street parties’ and commemorative dinners aboard both Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria. It was a wonderful occasion and a memorable way to say, ‘Happy Birthday, Ma’am!’ C Main: Her Majesty The Queen visits QE2 on 2 June 2008. Below: Two special cocktails created for Her Majesty The Queen’s birthday celebrations. The official royal birthday. The idea of a monarch’s official birthday celebration, separate to their actual birthday, dates back to 1748, the latter years of George II’s reign. Born in November, he felt the weather was not suited to a grand public parade, so he moved it to the spring. This was also the year when the Trooping the Colour ceremony became part of the sovereign’s official celebrations. Like her father George VI, Her Majesty The Queen originally marked her official birthday on the second Thursday of June. That changed in 1959, when she moved it to the second Saturday so that more of the public would be able to attend. 14 | CUNARDER August 2016 www.cunard.co.uk | 15 FEATU RE Main: The famed Verandah Grill on the original Queen Mary. Right: The newly remastered Queens Grill restaurant. 2 016 not only marks the 80th anniversary of the introduction of the much-loved Queen Mary but the start of Cunard’s Grills and à la carte dining! The Grills. By Michael Gallagher, Cunard PR Manager and Historian. Cunard today is renowned for its Grills and the overall Grills experience with Queens Grill and Princess Grill dining and accommodation rated among the finest at sea. It is interesting to reflect that initially Cunard was reluctant to introduce the concept of à la carte dining to its ships which was at odds with its two primary rivals, the British White Star Line and the German Hamburg America Line (Hapag) who introduced extra-tariff à la carte restaurants in order to offer First Class passengers even more. Cunard’s 1907 Lusitania and Mauretania were initially to have a Grill Room, but this was not to be à la carte and it was not to be extra-tariff, and plans for such a room were eventually shelved. However White Star introduced the extra-tariff concept on Olympic in 1911 and Hapag did on Imperator in 1913. White Star’s à la carte restaurants offered an alternative dining experience to the main First Class Restaurant. Affectionately called ‘The Ritz’ by passengers the restaurant was not operated by White Star, but was managed as a private concession by Italian immigrant Gaspare Antonio Pietro Gatti, a well-regarded London restaurateur. The venue had its own staff of chefs, waiters, and kitchen help. None of the restaurant staff were employees of the White Star Line. Hapag-Lloyd employed César Ritz (of Ritz Hotel fame) to handle the concession for their RitzCarlton Restaurants. When Cunard took on the Imperator (she eventually became Berengaria) after the First World War it removed the restaurant and built a Ballroom in its place. No accommodation was assigned to any of the above – these restaurants were merely an alternative for First Class passengers to go to dine – and, of course, sources of extra revenue for White Star and Hapag-Lloyd. It was not until 1914 and the advent of Aquitania that Cunard offered a Grill Room but, in keeping with Cunard’s negative attitude toward such facilities, the Grill Room was merely a space for First Class diners to escape the very grand main Dining Room and eat in a more intimate atmosphere. Cunard made no charge for this and the room had two grills which could serve passengers food 24 hours a day – perhaps a first in terms of round-theclock dining? ‘For a charge of 10 shillings per person First Class passengers could drink, dine and dance into the early hours’ Cunard Grills really came into their own with Queen Mary in 1936 and, after the Second World War, the Verandah Grills on her and her sister Queen Elizabeth became the most sought after places to be seen and spend time in on the Atlantic. For a charge of 10 shillings per person First Class passengers could drink, dine and dance into the early hours as there was an orchestra stand and dance floor. For the Hollywood stars and other celebrities the Grills offered extra privacy and guests were encouraged to make special orders – the bold claim that Cunard chefs could cater for any request began here. In addition both Caronia (the ‘Green Goddess’) and the second Mauretania featured Verandah Cafés. When QE2 appeared in 1969 she had The Grill Room and Bar where for an extra charge First Class could enjoy lunch and dinner in a 100-seat setting. This room was closed in 1972 when the addition of the first Penthouses on QE2 resulted in the building of a new, larger, Grill: the 200-seat Queens Grill – the first time that name appeared on Cunard ships. At this point Cunard introduced the system in place on its ships today: the stateroom you book determines where you eat. The original Grill Room was re-opened as the Princess Grill in 1976 as Cunard sought to cater for the demand for Grills. And increasing demand resulted in an additional Grill being created in 1990: Princess Grill II. The original Princess Grill became Princess Grill I. Passengers became confused which Grill they were in (I or II) so shortly afterwards they were renamed with Princess Grill I becoming Princess Grill Port and II becoming Princess Grill Starboard. As plans were being developed for QE2’s 1994 refit Cunard considered renaming one of the Princess Grills the Verandah Grill but then decided to rename one Countess (to match the Cunard Princess and Cunard Countess ships). In the end the Princess Grill Starboard became Britannia Grill while the I was removed from Princess Grill. Today the current fleet offers Queens Grill and Princess Grill dining and accommodation and now all three ships offer Cunard’s signature The Verandah which offers a premium French menu. C Celebrating the Cunard Building. On Saturday 10 June 1916, the first staff moved into the magnificent Cunard Building on Liverpool’s Pier Head. A century later, on Friday 10 June 2016, the Cunard Building was the setting for the launch of a new book, The Passenger’s Palace – 100 Years of Cunard Building Liverpool. Written by Cunard Public Relations Manager and Historian Michael Gallagher with Tony Storey, who worked 16 | CUNARDER August 2016 closely on last year’s spectacular 175th anniversary events, this book examines the building’s history and its importance to Cunard and to the entire city. Created using our own records together with the memories of many who worked there, and lavishly illustrated with rarely seen archive images, this is a wonderful and informative work for any Cunard enthusiast. £9.99, available from all good book shops. www.cunard.co.uk | 17 FEATU RE St Petersburg. Russia’s ‘Window on the West’. Standing at virtually the most easterly point of the Baltic Sea, within the Gulf of Finland, St Petersburg was Peter the Great’s ‘Window on the West.’ For you, our Cunard guests, it is a wonderful glimpse into the past and present of Russia. A city of five million people, St Petersburg was the national capital for two of the three centuries it has existed. Briefly known as Petrograd (1914-1924) and then Leningrad (1924-1991), St Petersburg today stands as the ornate imperial centrepiece to our summer Baltic Sea cruises, where an overnight stay offers two days to discover its intriguing grandeur. While the Shuvalovsky Palace is impressive and imposing, it’s what’s inside that counts for most visitors – the world’s largest collection of works by Peter Carl Fabergé, including nine of the famous Imperial Easter Eggs. These eggs were personal gifts between the last Romanov, Tsar Nicholas II and his Empress Alexandra, and only 42 of the 50 created for the imperial family have survived. Your first question might be how to explore. Well, there’s a certain serenity to admiring the grand buildings by boat along the Riva Neva and the many Dutch-inspired canals that were a feature of Peter the Great’s original vision. There’s a sense of awe to travelling a Metro system renowned for its opulent communist era stations. Avtovo, one of the seven original underground stations that opened in 1955, is among the most lavish, combining ornamental glass, white marble columns and even chandeliers. And there’s a feeling of indulgence to a private tour by Volga, a sleek vintage car that was once the ultimate communist status symbol, the transport of choice for any highranking party official. ‘An almost dizzying three million artworks are inside’ Of course, when it comes to palaces, history and priceless collections, nothing rivals the Winter Palace. Existing in some form or other for almost as long as St Petersburg itself, and famously stormed during the October 1917 Revolution, it now houses the Hermitage Museum, which has been open to the public since 1852. An almost dizzying three million artworks are inside and it is so vast that routes through the museum change daily. It’s why the best way to see it may be on a Cunard excursion that offers an out-of-hours evening visit, complete with a classical concert in one of its ceremonial halls. C ‘Find yourself drawn to those mesmerising palaces’ No matter how you find your way around, you’ll find yourself drawn to those mesmerising palaces, churches and cathedrals that both symbolise the city and tell its often sorrowful story. One of the most photographed is the Church of the Saviour on the Spilled Blood, whose name is a reminder as to its location. Building began in 1883, two years after the assassination of Alexander II, whose largescale reforms gained him many enemies. Its onion domes glint in blue, green and gold patterns, while the interior conceals an astonishing 7,500 square metres of mosaics. Incidentally, one of the best places to see it is from Nevsky Prospekt, St Petersburg’s principal, and most famous, boulevard. 18 | CUNARDER August 2016 Bringing the experience on board. With St Petersburg one of the jewels of our Baltic cruises, we have decided to celebrate it on Queen Elizabeth too. We have invited an expert on Russian arts and culture aboard to host a series of Insights talks on subjects such as Baltic Amber, Russian Art History, Matryoshka Dolls and Peter Carl Fabergé, all of which may well complement your discoveries ashore. There will also be a Russian Bazaar on board during your return to Southampton. This means you can devote your whole time in St Petersburg to exploring this incredible city, and can save your souvenir shopping until afterwards. You’ll discover a wide choice of amber, Matryoshka Dolls, Russian jewellery, lacquer art and other collectibles as gifts or as a memento of your holiday. Outside the city, the blue and white façade of the resplendent Catherine’s Palace – named for Catherine I, Empress of Peter the Great – stretches almost a kilometre, adorned with gilded domes and balconies. South America in all its glory. ‘Scenery is big in South America, really big’ Illuminating Land Tours to extend the adventure. Should you choose a shorter World Voyage adventure which starts or ends in Rio de Janeiro or Valparaiso, you can add on one of these incredible tours. ◆ Rio de Janeiro Mountains & Waterfalls At around the time you read this, South America will have just staged its first ever Olympic Games, with Rio having been the effervescent host. This comes just two years after football’s World Cup lit up cities across Brazil. Besides featuring so prominently on the recent global sporting calendar, Brazil – and indeed all of South America – is also on Queen Victoria’s calendar too. H er 2017 World Voyage, leaving next January, explores South America’s east coast then rounds Cape Horn as part of a circuit that includes North America, Australia and New Zealand. Along the way, she’ll become the first of our three current ships to venture along the Amazon – a thousand miles inland, in fact, to intriguing Manaus. The rubber boom that once made it one of the richest cities on earth has been and gone, but the incongruous opera house remains, as does the immense Amazon rainforest all around. In 2018, Queen Victoria renews and extends the acquaintance, sailing right around this dazzling continent over 75 nights. It’s an opportunity to visit new places. Brazil for instance, offers first calls in Búzios – the Brazilian St Tropez whose beaches found fame with the arrival of Brigitte Bardot in the 1960s – and to the crumbling pastel allure of Salvador. And how can you ignore Rio? Well, quite simply you can’t, and Queen Victoria stays overnight so you can fully appreciate its exuberant energy and legendary beaches under the watchful gaze of Christ the Redeemer. There are two days in Buenos Aires as well. It’s grand and stately at first glance, filled with majestic buildings like the Colon Theatre opera house and the Presidential Palace in Plaza de 24 | CUNARDER August 2016 Mayo, from whose balcony Eva Perón addressed her people. Scratch beneath the surface and you’ll find it flamboyant and vibrant, embodied by sultry tango performances and the colourful wooden houses in the La Boca district. It’s one of many South American capitals that may be on your discovery chart, along with the neoclassical elegance of Montevideo in Uruguay. Over in Chile, the hills of Valparaiso may draw you inland to Santiago. Cradled by the Andes, there’s a healthy smattering of colonial architecture, like the twin-spired Metropolitan Cathedral, and some oh-so-Chilean crafts and souvenirs, such as alpaca knitwear. ‘Embodied by sultry tango performances and the colourful wooden houses’ Lima, Peru’s first city, is a foodie’s gem, filled with fresh-that-day seafood and unlikely fusion cuisine like Chifa, where Peruvian meets Chinese on the same plate. Manta in Ecuador may be your introduction to Quito, the second highest capital on the planet whose volcanic peaks create natural adornments. Both are maiden visits for Queen Victoria. Scenery is big in South America, really big. While seemingly endless plains and the soaring Andes run through the continent, it saves its most spectacular landscapes for the south. Tierra del Fuego is a rugged tapestry of lakes, waterfalls and islets that deserves a scenic hike or breathtaking train ride. Chile’s fjords are every bit as dramatic as those in Norway, etched with steep, narrow inlets, where you can set eyes on two mighty, creaking glaciers. Man’s legacy is just as fascinating. You could come face-to-face with the oldest mummies known to exist, the Chinchorro Mummies in San Miguel de Azapa Museum near Arica – some preserved for seven thousand years. Lima’s Plaza Mayor, centrepiece of the conquistadores’ City of Kings with its Archbishop’s Palace and twin-towered baroque cathedral, seems positively modern in comparison. Although more Central America than South America, the tombs and temple-pyramids of the Mayans, which you can see in both Belize and Mexico, are surely a must-see on any travel enthusiast’s list.
