where to go fishing - Peak District National Park
where to go fishing • Nottingham £1 Midlands East The 2009/10 guide to more than 130 coarse and game fisheries in your local area Don’t forget your rod licence welcome The Midlands covers a rich diversity of urban and rural landscapes extending from the Humber to the Severn Estuary. It includes the wild uplands of the Peak District (Britain’s first National Park), through to the agricultural plains of Shropshire, Warwickshire and Worcestershire. It has over 7,000km of river, including the Severn and the Trent and, as the hub of the national canal network, almost 1,000km of canal. This provides fantastic opportunities for all forms of inland fishing whether it is coarse or game, river, or at one of the hundreds of stillwaters dotted around the region. The East area has hundreds of gravel pit and stillwater fisheries offering a range of fishing. From delicate match fishing for shy biting species through to toughing it out on the banks of wind swept gravel pits as you wait for that elusive specimen to pick up your bait, in the Midlands you can experience it all. Lower reaches of rivers such as the Derwent offer excellent coarse fishing for chub and roach and in the upper reaches you can find some of the finest traditional river fly fishing for trout and grayling in the country. The River Trent provides excellent fishing for many river fish species including specimen barbel. The wide range of opportunities available in the East area should excite both experienced and new anglers alike, so why not share your enjoyment of fishing with your friends and family. We hope that this guide helps you enjoy some of the superb fishing on offer. Good luck and best wishes for the coming season. Geoff Nickolds Chairman, Regional Fisheries Ecology and Recreation Advisory Committee Midlands East www.environment-agency.gov.uk/rodlicence 3 Don’t forget your licence Every freshwater angler in England and Wales aged 12 years or over must hold a valid Environment Agency rod licence, or risk prosecution and a fine of up to £2,500. We’ve made it even easier to get hold of your new rod licence. Annual licences have been specially redesigned (see opposite) and for the first time, concession licences can be purchased online. For the eighth year running the cost of a junior rod licence has been frozen at just £5. We’ve also made the licensing process simpler and more efficient. This means that more of your licence fee will be spent on improving fisheries. Once you’ve bought your licence, you are issued with a reference number, which means you can start fishing straight away. If you buy an annual licence you will be sent your new-style credit-card sized licence in the post. 4 Call us on 08708 506 506 If you buy a 1 day or 8 day licence you will get a receipt with your reference number. This should be carried with you whenever you’re fishing. • Details of how to buy your new rod licence are shown on the back cover. • Rod licences are needed by those aged 12 years or older fishing for freshwater fish, eels, trout or salmon in England, Wales, or the Border Esk in Scotland but not the Tweed or its tributaries. • A licence allows the use of two rods at the same time when fishing for coarse fish and eels, subject to byelaws. If you’re fishing with three or four rods you will need two licences. Midlands East Introducing your new rod licence • For Full, Concession and Junior licence holders. • Credit-card sized to fit safely in your wallet. • The coarse and non-migratory trout licence (top) features a perch, and the salmon and migratory trout licence (left) sports a salmon. • Water-resistant. • The new licence card offers greater security, because it shows less of your personal information. Our officers can verify its validity quickly and easily via the barcode. Coarse and trout Full Concession Junior 8 day 1 day Don’t forget the juniors 2009/10 £26.00 £17.25 £5.00 £9.50 £3.50 Salmon and sea trout Full Concession Junior 8 day 1 day 2009/10 £70.00 £46.50 £5.00 £22.50 £7.75 Note: Concession licences are available to people aged over 65; or those who hold a Blue Badge for parking or receive Disability Living Allowance. Juniors must be under 17 and over 12 years old on the date of purchase. A strike was followed by an explosion before an uncontrollable force surged towards the reeds. I could do no more than hold on and pray. Somehow it turned. The battle’s ferocity continued. A giant copper flank hit the surface with a back wide enough to put a saddle on. I made a desperate lunge with the net and pulled her ashore … 44lb 4oz … another ‘Impossible’.” This dramatic quote about the huge carp that graces this page is from Martin Bowler the star of Hugh Miles’s new film series ‘Catching the Impossible’. It’s being widely acclaimed as the best fishing programme ever and sees Martin team up with actor Bernard Cribbins. It’s sure to inspire you to get out on the banks and to take your friends and family fishing. Each episode boasts ‘Impossible’ specimens but the ethos of the films is one to which we can all relate – angling 6 Call us on 08708 506 506 is there to be enjoyed and brings us closer to nature. We see Bernard and Martin fishing for trout and salmon as well as a variety of coarse fish. But they don’t only visit exclusive waters – the films show that most people have good quality and varied fishing available close to them. Look through this guide and you’ll find loads of great accessible waters near you where you could catch something different, maybe even an ‘Impossible’. Midlands East Here are some key species targeted by Martin and Bernard, that you can catch too: CARP The No.1 UK species and good fish including 20 and 30-pounders are accessible to all. While hair-rigged boilies score, don’t ignore corn, meat, bread and pellets and in the summer crust and dog biscuits. ‘Impossible’ target: 40lb. BARBEL There are now double-figure fish in many rivers. Pellets and boilies are key baits but feeder fed maggot and meat still work. ‘Impossible’ target: 15lb. ROACH A fish for all seasons that feeds well in high summer and on the coldest winter day. Float fish maggot, caster and hemp on fine tackle. Feed little and often. ‘Impossible’ target: 3lb. PERCH Very often an angler’s first ever fish as they are greedy and not tackle shy. Perch are thriving in all sizes with 2 and 3lb+ specimens now plentiful. Use lobworms, small fish and prawns for specimens with maggot for bags of smaller fish. ‘Impossible’ target: 4lb. The Catching the Impossible book and DVDs are available from www.calmproductions.com or by calling 0845 408 2606. A15 www.environment-agency.gov.uk/rodlicence 9 Before you go fishing don’t forget • You must have an Environment Agency rod licence before you fish (see page 4) and also permission from the fishery owner. There is usually a charge for a permit. • You must also comply with the fisheries byelaws. Ring 08708 506506 or look on our website for byelaws in your area. • The coarse fish close season (15 March – 15 June inclusive) applies to all rivers, streams and drains in England and Wales, but not to most stillwaters and canals. Exceptions that retain the close season are the Broads and some Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs). These are listed in the Schedules attached to the byelaws. Fishery owners can have their own close season and other rules, so please check with them before setting out. Other fishing guides are available This guide is one of a series covering England and Wales. Please ring 08708 506506 if you want a guide for another part of the country. There will be a charge of £1 for postage and packing. You can also view and download the guides free on our web site: www.environment-agency.gov.uk/wheretofish.
