CC Students Involved At School And In The Community
Through MYLead Conference
In the 2006-07 School year, when I was a
Sophomore, there was a writing contest
announced at CC for the Michigan Youth
Leadership Conference (MYLead). The
topic was “How could you make CC a
better place?” Whoever had the best essay
was awarded a trip to a weekend-long
leadership conference at Michigan State.
I thought it would be a good experience.
It was absolutely life-changing.
The guidance counselors at CC selected
my essay and sent me to the Conference.
It made such an impact on my life that
I volunteered to work at it during the
2007-08 School year, and am planning to
again this year. The Conference taught
me how to work and grow with other
people while performing and leading
community service. Since then, I have
used what I learned to be chairman of
two charity runs for the Make-a-Wish
Foundation, plus do hundreds of hours
of community service.
“
I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO
USE WHAT I HAVE LEARNED
THROUGH MYLEAD AND
APPLY IT TO MY LIFE.
THIS EXPERIENCE HAS
MADE ME A BETTER
LEADER IN SCHOOL
AND SCOUTING. IT HAS
ALSO MADE ME A MORE
OUTGOING INDIVIDUAL.
GREGG ZDAN ’10
”
In 2007-08, CC sent two more representatives to the MYLead Conference, George
McIntyre ’10 and Gregg Zdan ’10. They
were selected in the same way I was,
and feel similar to the way I do about
the conference: It was a truly worthwhile
experience. They came out of the
Conference with just as much as I did,
if not more. Greg is especially active
in Student Council, getting his hands
dirty in everything and anything the
Council does.
MYLead fulfills its mission of developing
future leaders by hosting an annual
leadership conference for high-school
sophomores. For more details,
interested students should go to
the CC Guidance Office.
Congratulations to the following
students who took Part I of
the Michigan Mathematics Prize
Competition exam, and finished
in the top 1,000 of 14,000 students
who participated. They will go on
to take Part II of the MMPC exam,
and could qualify for up to $2,600
each in scholarships.

It is with great excitement that the
Library Media Center of Catholic Central
announces the development of a new
material type to the collection. The
material type is called CC Alum.
CC Alum is the prefix to the Classification
Number of your book, or e-Book, or
VHS, DVD, CD or Cassette.
You authors, illustrators and creative
audio/visual generators have the talents,
skills and the blessings of being published
and or recorded. It is your attitude, spirit,
drive, and persistence that made you
who you are – a success. The Library has
created a means by which your published
talent will not only become part of the
Library Media Center’s already outstanding collection, but will be a catalyst
for sparking a flame of like interest in
current and future CC students.
For example: The spine labels on Spyder
Web (a novel) and Quantum (a thriller) –
both by Tom Grace ’80 – are CC Alum
Fic Gra G729S and CC Alum Fic Gra
G729Q respectively. The Library uses
the Cutter-Sanborn system to keep
multiple titles by the same author,
illustrator and audio visual producer
in alphabetical order on the shelf.
On the other hand, River Rouge: Ford’s
Industrial Colossus, by Joseph P. Cabadas
’85, has a classification of CC Alum
629.2 C112R. Joe is busy again. As an
author and freelance writer, he is working
on a history book on the development
of the 1937-1940 Ford cars and trucks
for Motorbooks of St. Paul, Minn. He is
interested in any anecdotal family, racing
or hot-rodding stories. He will also be
one of six writers contributing to the
weekly MotorCities “Story of the Week”
that is published in the Detroit News
(DetNews.com). If you have any questions, you can call Joe at (313) 271-7135.
Send your stories to Joe Cabadas at
josephcabadas@yahoo.com. And, if
you really want to be “in the know,” the
CC Mothers’ Club’s exclusive ornament
designer, Mr. Curtis J. Posuniak, is the
designer of the Ford Motor Company’s
R O O S T
Bringing Library Resources To CC Students & Alumni
100th Anniversary of the Model T ornament, available at The Henry Ford or by
ordering via Klassics by Kurtis, Inc. at
(248) 593-1034. The CC Bookstore has the
School’s ornaments, designed by Curtis,
for sale year round. Christmas is coming!
Next time you are on Campus, stop in
the Library Media Center and also the
Bookstore for great items.
Calling All Authors,
Illustrators & Audio
Visual Producers
Brian Downs ’95, who authored Teenage
Journey Into Politics, can be found at CC
Alum 324 D751T.
Recently, the Library received a CD
called Share His Love with Bill Scruggs
[’44 deceased]. This audio production
will also carry the CC Alum prefix, as
will all Alum items, regardless of format.
If you are an author or an illustrator, or
both, or if you have produced a video
or audio production, we would love a
copy of your published work(s) in the
Catholic Central Library Media Center.
Please autograph your print materials
and, if you are so inclined, you may
write an “eternally applicable message”
for the inspiration of all patrons.
Send your publication(s) to: CC Alum
Special Library Collection, c/o Mrs. Joyce
MacLennan, Cataloguer, 27225 Wixom
Road, Novi, Michigan 48374. Please
include your address and the year of your
graduation so that it can be added to
the Bibliographic Record. Having your
contributions bibliographically tagged
with your name will also allow you to see
Your Specific Gifts 24/7 on the Library
Media Center’s Home Page. You will
receive a “thank you” tax write-off letter
for tax purposes. Please make yourself
part of the CC Library riches! Attitudes
are contagious and yours is worth catching!

Members of the
JV squad were called up to fill in on the
Varsity team, and they did a great job.
Brett has been named one of the top

Good Luck Charm – In December, Alumni
Mom Cindi Holland (Brad ’99 and Greg ’07),
arranged for the Stanley Cup to visit CC, and
everyone was given time to have a photo taken
with the most famous trophy in sports. Thanks,
also, to Emily Cavanaugh for the several hours
she spent taking all of our photos.
Next season, when these young skaters
will combine their talents with those of
the returning letterman, good things are
bound to happen. Congratulations to

Basketball
The CC Varsity Basketball Team is proof
that hard work eventually pays off. They
were rewarded by repeating as State District
Champions and then went on to win the
Regional Championship for the first time
in 26 years with a victory over Hartland.
Unfortunately, the team lost a tough game
to Romulus in the Quarterfinals, 45-41.
The Team ended the season with a 19-6
record, with five of their losses by less
than six points. Season highlights
included victories over De La Salle,
St. Mary’s, Brother Rice and U of D, as
well as Northville, Plymouth and Novi.
The team was led by Seniors Brett Smith,
Steve Harding, Tim Dezelski, Jamie
Morris, John Dwyer and Chris Barnas.
The Freshman Team finished with a 16-2
record, and the JV squad was 13-4. Both
teams qualified for the League tournament,
but were upset in their first playoff games.
In the hands of Coach Bill Dyer, the CC
Basketball program looks to become
stronger every year. Congratulations to
Coach Dwyer, his staff and the players
on a very successful season.
Bowling
The 2008 CC Bowling Team finished fourth
in the Catholic League and third in the
Regionals, which qualified them for the
State Finals. Unfortunately, the pins were
not flying as well as the guys would have
liked and the team went home with a
very respectable 12th-place finish. The
team was a mix of members from all four
classes, so a good foundation exists to
build on for next year. With that in mind,
Coach Al Bridges ’71 is very confident
that the strikes and spares will be very
plentiful next season.
Skiing
The 2009 CC Ski Team had a very
successful year, winning the Mt. Brighton
League and the Catholic League
Championships. The Team, led by
Seniors Derek Turowski, Spencer Hicks
and Greg Barilovich, finished third in
the State Regionals, and ninth at the
subsequent Finals.
Coach Gable said although he will be
sorry to see this great group of Seniors
move on, he can’t wait for cold weather
when the snow begins to fly. Next year’s
Team will return 10 of 15 members and
the future looks bright.
Swimming
The Swimming Program continued its
resurgence at CC, as the size of the Team
and its successes in the pool grew again
during the 2008-2009 season. Shamrock
Swimmers were propelled by their 3 - 5
regular-season record to second place at
the Catholic League Finals. The Team –
led by Seniors Derek Turowski, Colin
Bonathan and Dan Wardle, with key
contributions from Underclassmen – also
qualified five swimmers and one diver
for the State Finals.
Coach Dunworth expects great things
for next season, and can’t wait to get the
team back in the pool.
Wrestling
The Varsity Wrestling Team had a great
year. They won Observerland, Catholic
League, State District and Regional titles,
finished second in the CC Invitational,
third in the Oakland County Invitational,
and ended the dual-meet regular season
15 -4 after losing to Lake Orion in the
State Finals. Coach Hancock said, ”It’s
very rewarding to get a team to the State
Finals… Getting to Battle Creek has to be
a constant in this program in order for

us to accomplish our goal of
getting back to being the best
Wrestling program in the
state. I am extremely proud
of our guys, especially our
Seniors.” Seven wrestlers
qualified for the State Individual
Championships, held March 12-14 at the
Palace of Auburn Hills. Of the six who
placed, Alec Mooradian ’12 won a State
Championship, and ended the year with
a 50 - 0 record. Alec is only the second
Freshman in CC history to win a State
title. Congratulations, Alec!
The Varsity B Team also had a great year,
finishing with a 15-5 dual-meet record,
and winning the Catholic League crown.
Both the JV and Freshman Teams show
a lot of promise. Coach Hancock said
these younger wrestlers will make great
additions to the 2010 Varsity Squad and
will help CC bring home a State title in
the very near future.
