A Message to Parents Dear Parents, Children and Friends of Camp Howard, Camp Howard was established in 1953 as a fun recreational camp for youth from all walks of life to enjoy a week of camping experience in a setting based on Christian values. Camp Howard, named for Archbishop Edward D. Howard, is a youth camp located 45 minutes from downtown Portland, between Corbett and Sandy, OR. The camp property was donated by the Horton family in 1952 and is operated by the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO). Thanks to our annual Champions of Faith benefit dinner, which began in 2011, the camp has been financially blessed with the necessary funding to offer scholarship assistance as well as to make needed program/facility improvements. Since 2012 we have heated the pool, rebuilt the camp’s Star Deck and are close to completion of our current goal of covering our basketball courts to give the kids a space to play on rainy days. We have a lot of dreams for the camp and if you are interested in helping to make dreams come true, I would love to hear from you! (503 - 231- 9484 x 104). Thank you for choosing Camp Howard for a summer experience for your child. We are grateful to have the opportunity to make some great memories for your loved ones. God bless you! Sister Krista von Borstel SSMO Executive Director CYO/Camp Howard Camp Howard 2015 ACA Accreditation Camp Howard voluntarily holds itself to the highest professional standards in the camping industry through its membership in the American Camping Association (ACA). Every three years Camp Howard must undergo a comprehensive on-site visit and analysis of it’s operating practices to remain accredited. These operating benchmarks, (up to 300 standards), comprise the most up- to-date, research-based standards and practices governing professional camp operation within the United States. Open House 2015 Join us at Camp Howard on Sunday, June 28, 2015 for our annual Open House event. Featured Programs Counselor-In-Training I & II The Counselor-In-Training (CIT) program is designed for the development of the leadership and communication skills needed to become a future camp staff member. The Camp Howard CIT Program takes two summers to complete, with each year containing a specific twoweek long training course. CIT’s leave camp on the mid-weekend. Our CIT program is divided as follows: CIT I A&B (Year 1) (Sessions 3 & 4 / July 19 - 24 & July 26 - 31) (Sessions 5 & 6 / August 2 - 7 & August 09 - 14) The primary goal of the first year is to have the CITs begin transitioning their “mindset” from being a camper to feeling comfortable with a potential new role as a staff member in the camp setting. Daily meetings are held by the CIT Director that include a specific training curriculum, group exercises and an opportunity to explore camp staffing initiatives through Q and A sessions. Ages 15-17 may apply. (See our website for additional details and required application/reference forms). CIT II A&B (Year 2) (Sessions 1 & 2 / July 5 - 10, July 12 - 17) The CITs progress through more leadership and communication skill training during the second year that is designed to prepare them for potential staffing opportunities in the future. Daily curriculum sessions with the CIT Director and job shadowing with assigned summer staff highlight the first week of this session. CIT IIs will be given the opportunity to assist staffing our Mini Camp program during their second week. Ages 15-17 may apply. (See our website for additional details and required application/reference forms).
