On behalf of Sr. Krista von Borstel, Executive Director of CYO Camp Howard and Bill Fogarty, Camp Director, we would like to thank you for becoming part of the Camp Howard family. We look forward to having your camper(s) with us for lots of great summer fun! We have several new programs and activities this season along with many of the “old” favorites planned to make this a summer to remember for everyone. OPEN HOUSE Bring your family and friends for a tour of the Camp Howard facilities. Our Open House will be held on Sunday, June 28th from 2pm – 5pm. We encourage everyone to come enjoy a camp tour, meet our staff, check out the Camp Store, see our facilities and get all your questions answered. Remember to wear sturdy shoes. Any tours of camp after our Open House are by appointment only. REGISTRATION Camp registration for Camp Howard sessions is available on-line via the Camp Howard website at www.cyocamphoward.org. You can register online or contact our Portland office at (503) 231-9484 for alternative registration options if you don’t have on-line access. Registration for each summer camp session will close at noon on Thursday of the week prior to each session. Camp participants will not be allowed to board the bus for camp unless the following items are completed and submitted prior to their camp departure day: 1. Complete camp registration including the required medical release, immunization record validation, latest tetanus shot date and the mandatory medical insurance coverage information. 2. Comprehensive information on all prescriptive and over-the-counter medications to be dispensed to your camper(s) while attending camp by our camp medical personnel. 3. Insurance Waiver & Participation Agreement. 4. Full payment is received at the CYO Camp Howard office. Pick-up is at The Madeleine School at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday. DROP-OFF & PICK-UP LOCATION The Madeleine School is located at 3240 NE 23rd (at Klickitat Street). Klickitat runs East-West and is located in a residential neighborhood, one block south of Fremont. Primary streets running North and South in close proximity to the school are 21st to the west and 33rd to the east. Please note that Klickitat St. between 23rd & 24th was closed to through traffic by The City of Portland last summer and converted into a plaza. We have moved our loading zone onto the main school parking lot located behind the school (24th & Klickitat Streets) north of the plaza. Off street parking is available for unloading and loading campers and their luggage in the school parking lot south of Klickitat at 24th (next to the outdoor play structure) or along the many streets around the school. Please do not park in the large parking lot north of Klickitat at 24th (next to the basketball courts) as that space is reserved for camper check-in, bus parking, loading and unloading campers, and for staging the camp luggage truck/luggage loading. Upon arrival at The Madeleine School, you and your camper(s) should proceed to the designated check-in stations (Boys and Girls), which are at the south end of the main parking lot. After campers are checked in and their luggage is tagged with Unit identification material (colored yarn) at the yarn station, campers will take their “yarned” luggage to the luggage truck at the North section of the parking lot. Once your luggage is given to the camp staff for loading, proceed to the waiting area on the south side of Klickitat Street near the school, to await loading of the busses. Parents should stay with their camper(s) at all times until they are loaded on the busses, at which time Camp Howard will assume responsibility for the camper(s). Camp Howard relinquishes responsibility for the campers at the end of camp at the point of unloading upon return to The Madeleine School. Camp Howard staff will remain on-site until all campers are picked up at the bus stop. We encourage all campers to ride the bus provided by CYO Camp Howard because we feel that the ride up to Camp Howard is part of the whole camp experience. We realize that some campers live close to camp or in some cases other scheduled activities may make utilization of the included bus transportation one direction or the other impractical for getting your camper to/from camp. If your child is not riding the bus, you must inform the CYO Camp Howard Office in advance during business hours (8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday – Friday) by calling (503) 231-9484. In the event that you have a late change of plans outside of our normal business hours, call our main number @ (503) 231-9484 and leave a message for our Camp Director, Bill Fogarty, at Ext. 110 (our phone system auto-attendant will connect you to the correct extension). Safety Rules to be given to campers before every bus departure to/from camp: All body parts must remain inside the bus at all times. Everyone stays seated for the entire trip. No screaming or rough housing. All aisles must remain free of bags, pillows, etc. If you have a question or need assistance, please raise your hand and ask the attendant camp staff for help. Please make sure to send them well in advance, so they arrive while your camper is still at camp. The majority of our campers receive one or two letters a week or more. We sincerely encourage you to send your camper(s) mail during their session as it is difficult for that one camper who does not get any mail while away from home. If you send something express by UPS or Fed-Ex, the package must have a signed release form, which allows the carrier to leave the package at the Camp Office. Do not send anything by Certified Mail, as that also requires a signature, but will not be delivered to the Camp by the USPO. You can address your child’s mail as the example shows below (make sure to put a return address on it): Camper Name/Session #/Date Camp Howard 11010 SE Camp Howard Road Corbett, Oregon 97019 WHAT YOUR CAMPER WILL NEED TO BRING This is a list of items that we suggest your child bring to camp. Camp Howard Care Packages are priced at $25.00 per package and include unique items not available for general sale at the camp store. SAFETY AT CAMP The safety and well being of all our campers is our first priority. We have a Camp Nurse on-site at all times and our complete summer staff is CPR and First-Aid trained. In addition, we have doctors that are “on-call” in Sandy, OR at the Urgent Care Clinic or at Mt. Hood Legacy Hospital in Gresham. All campers are under the supervision of trained camp staff 24-hours a day. Parents will not be notified if basic first-aid is needed. Basic first-aid includes, but is not limited to bug bites, scratches, slivers, stomachaches, bee stings, headaches, cramps, etc. Parents will be notified if more than basic first-aid is needed. This would include, but is not limited to, severe cuts, broken bones, ticks, high fever, sore throat, sprains, etc. If a camper requires medical attention beyond what the camp health service can provide on-site, the Camp Nurse will make all possible effort to notify the parents or guardians to make arrangements for you to pick up the camper at camp to pursue further medical attention at your discretion. In the event you can not be reached in advance to advise you of a priority medical need for your camper, our Camp Administrative Staff will transport the camper to the nearest appropriate medical facility for any required emergency care until you can be reached. IMPORTANT MEDICATION INFORMATION All prescription medication sent to camp with your camper(s) must be in the original containers, properly labeled by a pharmacy, including it’s valid and current physician’s prescription and detailed dosage information. All over-thecounter medications sent for your camper(s) must also be in their original containers. It is not legal for our camp nurses to dispense medications without doctor’s orders present and prescriptive medications not packaged correctly will not be dispensed to your camper. You will be contacted and given the option to bring the required prescriptive documentation to camp, as necessary. Please place all medications in one Ziploc bag with your child’s full name written on the bag. Also include any specific additional written instructions you may have about the medication you are sending to camp with your child. All medications are kept locked in the Health Center and are dispensed per doctor’s orders with your child’s cooperation by our Camp Nurse. Please note that our Health Center is fully stocked with common over-the-counter medications, so you don’t need to send an assortment of these medications to camp. EMERGENCY INFORMATION In the event of an emergency, if you need to notify the camp and/or your child, please call the Portland office at 503/231-9484 during our office hours (8am – 5pm / Monday – Friday) and you will be helped with your situation. After business hours you may communicate emergency messages to our Camp Director, Bill Fogarty, via email to billf@cyocamphoward.org CELL PHONES At Camp Howard campers are allowed to bring their cell phones. We encourage and consistently enforce proper cell phone “etiquette” at all times, which means that cell phone usage is not considered appropriate during meals, scheduled camp activities, campfires, Mass, etc. Appropriate usage times (“BOB” time or cabin time, etc.) and expectations of use will be given to campers by their Unit/cabin staff on their first day at camp. Please consider that excessive use of cell phones to call home can acerbate feelings of “Home Sickness” for many campers. The AT&T and Verizon networks seem to work best at Camp Howard, but coverage is spotty at best at our camp property. CYO Camp Howard is not responsible for camper cell phones, should they be broken, stolen or lost. HOMESICKNESS If your child has never been to camp before, you can help make their experience a successful and enjoyable one, by talking before they leave for camp about all the fun activities they are going to do. Tell them it is okay to miss you as long as it doesn’t ruin their fun. Our staff is well trained in how to handle homesickness and we will make it our priority to ensure your camper has a successful and fun week. COUGAR AWARDS For almost 60 years, Camp Howard’s longest and most prestigious tradition, the Cougar Award, has been presented each session to campers who exemplify generosity, humility, self-growth and good citizenship while at camp. It is awarded to campers who not only try and grow from their experience at camp, but who help other campers grow during their stay as well. When the award is given for the first time, a camper will get the necklace award as well as the respective bead for that season. Each summer that the camper receives the Cougar Award, they will earn the respective bead, from a sequence starting with Mini Camp (Cougar Cub Bead) and ending with staff (Blue Staff Bead). Cougar Awards are highly prestigious and celebrated enthusiastically by campers, CITs and staff. CAMPER CROSSES In 1997, we started our Camper Cross program. This program helps teach Christian values and it is also a memento that each camper receives from Camp Howard to take home with them. We will add a different bead to the necklace each season. If your child attended Camp Howard in the past, make sure they bring their cross with them this season to add this year’s bead. If their cross has been lost we can replace it upon request during their camp session. LOST & FOUND Camp Howard is not responsible for any items that are left at camp. Please label all items with your child’s first and last name. All lost and found items are returned to the Portland Office approximately one week after your child’s attendance. Please contact our office and come in to look for your camper’s belongings as soon as possible, as all lost and found items are only held for two weeks and then all unclaimed items are donated to charity. BEHAVIOR EXPECTATIONS Camp Howard strives to provide a safe Christian community for all campers. Campers that are unwilling to follow the basic Camp Howard rules make it difficult for our staff to provide this environment for all campers. It is unacceptable for one camper to ruin the experience of other campers. Campers are expected to follow all the rules of Camp Howard or they will be sent home. We will make every effort to work with your camper and “redirect” inappropriate behavior as necessary, but if other campers are being negatively affected by their behavior, or if their behavior is putting themselves or others at risk, you will be contacted to come to camp immediately to take your camper home. Campers sent home receive no refund for unused services. Below is the minimum accepted Code of Conduct for Camp Howard: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Respect yourself Respect others Respect the environment including all wildlife Respect the buildings and property of Camp Howard Respectfully follow directions from all camp staff Use proper language at all times. Profanity of any kind is unacceptable Discrimination, bullying and other forms of intimidation or malicious teasing of another person is unacceptable and will not be tolerated 8. There is a absolute “Zero Tolerance” policy at Camp Howard regarding the use of alcohol, drugs of any type, fireworks, firearms, knives or other weapons that are brought into camp. Any type of sexual or interpersonal relationship based activity, which includes open displays of affection between campers such as holding hands and kissing, is inappropriate Camp Howard behavior and is not tolerated. Any violation of this policy will result in the camper being sent home with their parents/guardians immediately and without a refund. CABIN/UNIT ASSIGNMENTS & REQUESTING PREFERRED CABIN BUDDIES This summer, in order to greatly improve the efficiency of the camp check-in process during our arrival on Sunday afternoons, we will be assigning all campers to cabins and units prior to camp arrival based on their age/grade next Fall. During the camp registration process you will have the opportunity to request a preferred cabin “buddy” and we will assign you both to the same cabin pre-arrival. Preferred cabin buddy requests may not cross Unit Age/Grade limits. Campers will be assigned to Camp Howard units this season as follows: • Mini Camp (Boys and Girls ages 6-11, Grades 1-5) • Fircrest Unit (Girls ages 6-10, Grades 1-4) • Greenwood Unit (Boys ages 6-10, Grades 1-4) • Sparpole Unit (Boys ages 11-12, Grades 5-6) • Aldergrove Unit (Girls ages 11-12, Grades 5-6) • Cougar Den Unit (Boys and Girls ages 13-14, Grades 7-8) THANK YOU PARENTS AND CAMPERS!
