The esteemed harpist Emily Mitchell has been an advocate, performer, and champion of Schocker's music from the beginning. As she says, "He writes for the harp as a singing instrument, not unlike the flute. Instead of busily accompanying, or traditional right hand melody, left hand harmony, both hands shape the line." The works on this recording were composed between 1993 and 2010 and represent more than 25 years of collaboration between composer and harpist -- a fruitful collaboration that has so far produced four discs. This recording, re-released on Albany Records, now brings all recordings of Gary Schocker's harp music on one label: two discs of his Christmas music for harp; “Changes,” released in 2016, and now Garden in Hatp. Even before the event, we check more quickly our message. Nevertheless, we remain people of flesh and blood with unfulfilled desires and hopes, full of hope, friends and sorrow and with our faith in a vision of life or religion. As a counterbalance to the lightning quick, untraceable urbanization and industrialization, around them changed the lives, sought and found artists and writers of the 19th century comfort in the mysticism of the middle ages dreamed. Today, since the 1970s, we see in the extraordinarily successful music by composers such as Arvo Pärt a new recourse to the same Middle Ages. Meaningful new music often sheds new light on the past. Calliope Tsoupaki also feels at home in the Middle Ages. The music of this period is not only listed, but is also the subject of extensive research on ethnic music genres and the sound of music in their time. In their opera productions for the Holland Festival succeeded Calliope Tsoupaki to reconcile two seemingly disparate styles of music making with each other, could be summarily call the "learned" Western art music and improvised folk music. It was a great success: the opposite poles inspire each other. The composition’s title suggests that by observing the sky – open, alive, seemingly infinite – we may gain knowledge. The music uses a collection of motives presented in a quick and ever-changing rhythmic background to express the energy and quixotic nature of our atmosphere. These motives are constantly varied (expanded, compressed, altered methodically and harmonically) with their order of appearance continually rearranged. The shortest motive is the single note, the stopped low F# on the piano. The sound that results from striking this key is percussive in nature. Energy and tension is built through quick shifts between motives and by sudden changes from animated presentations to calmer repetitive versions of motivic material. At the center of the piece is a slow section: nearly motionless, it contains little repetition and emphasises lyrical lines in the saxophone and sparse textures in the piano. Here the low F# takes on a somber character, in stark contrast to the propulsive quality it conveys in the opening and closing sections. Patterns from the first part reappear in the final portion of the piece in increasingly animated forms. Constant variation and recording culminates in a dynamic peak that closes the work. (DDD) Thomas Osborne (b. 1978) writes: "For someone who was born in a land-locked region of the country, oceans have played a surprisingly important role in my music. Each of the works on this recording reference the sea in one way or another, and each was composed in close proximity to the ocean as well. I wrote three of these pieces in Los Angeles and the other in my current home of Honolulu. The four works on this CD, each in its own way, look out to the watery horizon, some exploring the expanse of water itself and others seeking what lies beyond. For a composer, the most fulfilling collaborations are those involving friends, and it has been my privilege to work with the musicians of Aperio for more than a decade. My collaboration with them began when I was a graduate student in Houston, and has continued on for many years since. In that time, I have crossed oceans to work with Aperio again and again, and I will gladly do so again in the future. Every composer should be so lucky as to work with musicians like these." Dehlinger] – Danielle Talamantes with Henry Dehlinger (DDD) Edward Kennedy “Duke” Ellington (1899-1974) is a colossus among American composers of any genre. With a career spanning more than 50 years, he wrote more than one thousand compositions, many of which have become jazz standards as well as precious, irreplaceable gems of the American Songbook. While music historians are wont to view him as a jazz or big band swing composer, Ellington’s work reaches far beyond. Many musicologists have neglected the extensive body of sacred music that Ellington produced, four of which are presented in this album. In truth, Ellington did not consider himself a jazz or big band writer and performer. In his words, he wrote and played “the natural feelings of a people.” Ellington conceived his works differently than others of the big band era. Typical arrangements of that period were written for a rhythm section supporting full sections of saxophones, trumpets and trombones with occasional short, improvised solos for contrast. Ellington was like a playwright, producing more script than manuscript, giving voice to leads within his cast of characters, then supporting the tale they wove with other voices within the cast. He chose his players not only for their musical proficiency, but also for their strong personalities. Unlike classic big band, Ellington encouraged his band to express themselves in their music, to let their individual personalities shine through. The early works were often released as three-minute instrumental singles, the maximum time possible on the single side of a teninch 78 RPM record. Words were added later, sometimes several years later, and by a variety of lyricists, adding another sparkling—sometimes startling —dimension to the captivating saga. Whether an instrumental or vocal arrangement, these pieces carry away the listener with Ellington’s uniquely transcendent, supremely evocative, and unequalled style. (DDD) Stephanie Vial writes: "It is curious that only a few Classical string trios survive as celebrated works for today's performers and audiences. These are Beethoven's Op. 9, set of three trios, the two youthful works of Schubert (the first unfinished), and the grand six-movement "Divertimento in E-flat" by Mozart, notably the sole representative from the 18th Century. All are truly masterful works, frequently performed and recorded, but which naturally beg the question "Is this really all there is?" A little research quickly unearthed a whole history of string trios from many of the 18th century's most prolific and eminent composers. Those represented on this CD alone collectively contributed upwards of 200 works exhibiting an extraordinary variety of textures and expressions, as well as astonishing instrumental techniques. The string trio, in the works presented on this recording, is revealed not only as a flexible and exciting genre in its own right, but also as playing an important role in the story of chamber music". 12 A U G U S T /1 6 Albany Music Distributors, Inc. It is music that has earned the love of audiences all over the world. For me, its freshness and innovation stand out. Chopin essentially established most of the genres in which he wrote: Ballade, Scherzo, Barcarolle, Nocturne, Mazurka. Whether or not he was the first to compose them for piano—and, in several cases, he was—they are all imbued with his uncanny sense of structure and harmony. Chopin, like Schubert just before him, is one of the first to develop and exploit textures and colors that are particular to the piano. He shows an intuitive understanding of how to distribute the notes in an accompaniment pattern and of how the pedal can contribute to the creation of previously unimagined textures. In some of the later works, including the Ballade No.3 and Barcarolle, the pedal is even used to create an entirely separate voice. “American pianist David Korevaar has his own distinctive approach to the works of Frédéric Chopin, and I personally find the results very gratifying... The selections are mostly very well-known examples of distinctive Chopin genres – ballade, scherzo, nocturne, mazurka, and barcarolle – but they sound refreshingly different here... a very satisfying program that, even with a duration of 76:53, you will soon want to hear again.”Phil Muse, Audio Society of Atlanta [June 2016] MSR CLASSICS MS1627 UPC CODE: Soaring Solo 681585162729 CLASSICAL PRICE CODE F GRAŻYNA BACEWICZ: KAPRYS POLSKI (Polish Caprice) for solo violin; ERNST TOCH: THREE IMPROMPTUS for solo viola; ALESSANDRO ROLLA: CAPRICCIO NO. 1 IN F for solo viola; GEORG PHILIPP TELEMANN: FANTASIE NO. 10 IN D for solo violin; HEINRICH IGNAZ FRANZ VON BIBER: PASSACAGLIA IN G MINOR for solo violin; URSULA MAMLOK: FROM MY GARDEN for solo violin; ALAN HOVHANESS: CHAHAGIR for solo viola; FAZIL SAY: CLEOPATRA for solo violin; KENJI BUNCH: SARABANDE for solo violin; MIGUEL DEL ÁGUILA:CORTANDO LIMONES (Cutting Limes) for solo violin; PAUL HINDEMITH: SONATE OP. 31, NO. 2 for solo violin; ALFRED SCHNITTKE; FUGA for solo violin – Stephanie Sant’Ambrogio, Violin & Viola (DDD) “Soaring effortlessly high above the clouds. That’s the sensation I enjoy when I am in the perfect performance zone. It’s a feeling of tremendous freedom and peace. As if I am weightless, I’m soaring on air currents looking passively down on the tumultuous world below as the music flows past my ears. When I decided to record a second CD of solo pieces for violin and viola, Soaring Solo was the title that came ‘out of the blue’ and drifted into my consciousness. And like Going Solo, I wanted to seed these clouds with some of my favorites from the Baroque period along with a few lesser known, rarely recorded gems and, finally, to include treasures written by living composers. Enjoy your own flight on the wings of these exceptional composers and their inspiring compositions.” [Stephanie Sant'Ambrogio] Albany Music Distributors, Inc. The image comes from only one work on this disc, and yet it seems curiously apropos to so much of Robert Carl’s (b. 1954) music. There is a still center in his music, even at its modernist rowdiest. In his music dissonance and rhythmic complexity do not connote anxiety, fear, violence, but rather the overflow of the exuberant noise that springs up from the ground of life. His music embraces extremes of simplicity and complexity, which in his vision interpenetrate each other. Symphony No. 4 (2008), one of his best and most ambitious works, is a score often dense with polyrhythms and dissonant counterpoint. Its subtitle is “The Ladder,” and the ladder in this case is the harmonic series, the series of overtones that arises naturally as you move your finger along a piano or guitar string while playing it. Two pieces on this disc were born from the sense of loss following the deaths of both of Carl’s parents, in quick succession. The less obvious one is the Chamber Concerto for Guitar, subtitled “The Calm Bee in the Busy Hive” (2009–10). The ten-member ensemble includes a second guitar, and both guitars are tuned to a scordatura that facilitates a harmonic series on E: E–G#–D–F#–Bb–F. The other is The Geography of Loss (2010), whose form is an alternation of choral and instrumental movements with the chorus and instruments together in two movements and a baritone solo and soprano solo, respectively, in each of those movements. Written considerably earlier than the other works on this disc, The World Turned Upside Down (2000) is somewhat in a different idiom, but Carl considers it a turning point in his output, and its coda the initiation of the harmonic-series practice. Overall, this group of pieces leads us through an enormous diversity of idioms, and Carl has never been one to cultivate a single well-defined style and stick to it. Yet if one listens with an ear for his procedure of shifting from one harmonic series to another, the underlying unity is perceptible, and the disc as a whole gives us a striking picture of one of one of the most remarkable of early 21st-century composers. 14 AUGUST/16 Albany Music Distributors, Inc. He composed for the Mason & Hamlin American Harmonium, also known as the "normal harmonium" which was Mason & Hamlin's effort to standardize the tonal and playing characteristics of the harmonium, especially key compass and dividing point on the keyboard, so that composers could write for it knowing of the parameters, as they had been able to do for the European harmonium since it had been standardized in the mid-19th century. The American harmonium had become very popular in Europe by the late 19th century so that the substantial European sales and promotional staff of the American firm, Mason & Hamlin, was keen to further develop the European market by allowing their instrument to become ever more recognized as a legitimate vehicle for serious art music. Arthur Bird, who enjoyed a substantial European and American reputation as a performer and composer during his life, joined the effort, perhaps on commission, writing extensively for the American harmonium.
