Digital Innovation
An introduction
“We are living in a golden age of digital innovation. During our
lifetimes, an entirely new digital infrastructure of computers,
mobile devices, broadband network connections, and advanced
application platforms has been created. This digital
infrastructure has, in turn, accelerated the emergence of new
technologies — social media, cloud computing, analytics, big
data, wearable devices, 3D printing — that enabe
transformations in the way we live and work, how companies
organise, and the structure of entire industries”
– Fichman et al (2014)

Digital Business
In Ireland
“The digital technology sector contributes 4.4% to Ireland’s
GDP, and is growing at 16% per year – that is more than 10
times the rate of growth of the economy as a whole. With
exports worth €72 billion per annum (40% of total national
exports) and four of the top five exporters in Ireland being
technology companies, this sector is a major employer,
accounting for an estimated 105,000 employees.”

Class of 2011
Management
EY Advisory (Ernst & Young)
I joined the course with one year post undergraduate work
experience. I had identified a need to upskill to build a career
in the broader IT industry and was drawn to the course as a
result of its blend of management and technical content.
The learning environment on the programme equipped me
very well for a career in consulting. I employ short term
teaming, effective prioritisation, presentations skills and
problem solving skills on an almost daily in my current role,
and my experience of the programme has accelerated my
career progression significantly, within the organisation. The
key differentiator that I have noticed compared to my early
stage peers, is that the content of the programme gave me a
significantly larger degree of credibility to form C-suite
relationships from the outset. The mix of business acumen
and technical skills has helped me to build relationships at all
levels within client organisations.
Ultimately, the course gave me the vocabulary, context and
fundamentals to secure a graduate IT consulting position
with Ernst & Young.

Class of 2015
Management
ATA Burs Ltd.
[The programme] has helped of immense practical
value in terms of my current project, which is a groupwide implementation of an ERP system.
We were exposed to a variety of teaching methods and
these have helped me to become more aware of how
people in my team learn and develop and that I need to
have different approaches at times and depending on
who I'm dealing with. Two modules were especially
helpful in terms of scoping the project and managing
change: Implementing Digital Projects and Managing
Systems Development.
In fact, upon completion of the course I was promoted
to Group IT Manager for the company I work with.

Oisin Hurley
Class of 2015
Technology Consultant
Bloomberg
I entered the course with an open mind. I had a highly technical
commerical background but was willing to see how the course would
shape the direction I eventually pursued.
The course gave me a good understanding of different business
units and how they operate and helped improve my presentation
skills. A consistent theme across the program was the importance of
thinking critically and challenging assumptions. I have found that the
quality of my discourse concerning the commerical world has
improved and this has helped raise my profile with senior
stakeholders. What I learned has stayed with me both professionally
and personally and has provoked a profound change to how I view
the world. I've developed a heightened confidence in myself that I
can achieve greater things at a professional level which is grounded
on the experiences within the Smurfit School.
The course has had an order of magnitude impact on my
perspective, it has already had a tremendous impact on my
professional development and I believe the real value of the course
will continue to be realised as my career progresses to a more senior
level. The decision to apply for the course is probably one of the best
decisions I've ever made.

Cian Cahill
Class of 2015
Technology Consultant
Accenture
Overall I really enjoyed the course, highlights including
understanding how to manage and implement digital
projects, changing ICT business processes and building an
understanding of the cultural and political implications of
introducing a technology to an organisation. The course even
incorporated interesting uses of technology in class, with
apps being used in lectures to make the class more
interactive and gather data.
The course is a perfect balance between business and
technology. It is ideal for either people from a business
background looking to get into the technology industry or
those with a pure IT background lacking soft skills and
business acumen to become consultants. It gave me a huge
advantage in my career as a technology consultant at
Accenture.
One of the best things about this course was the rich
cultural diversity of its students. This would act as a great
form of reference and knowledge for my own experience
when I went to India for training in my new role, having to
work and collaborate with people from multiple countries.

Testimonials
“I would say that Microsoft expects its graduates to be able to work under
ambiguous circumstances, and this is where critical thinking is needed so as to
best assess a new scenario and not just proceed as per the status quo. I feel that
this skill, championed through the course, is vital for the progression of
graduates throughout their careers”

Testimonials
“What I liked most was the mixture of practical concepts and their sociological and
philosophical foundations… I'm still finding the programme incredibly helpful in work,
especially the focus on innovative methods (IDEO method cards, etc.) and design
thinking… I directly apply many of the methods within my work in IT-strategy, and the
foundations I’ve learned help me to better understand our organization, partners and
customers.”
