St. Patrick’s Parade Association of Lackawanna County Celebrates 50 Years A Tribute to Our Founding Fathers P.O. Box 25 Scranton, Pa 18501-0025 www.stpatparade.com Presidential Comments & Observations One of the greatest thrills of my life was the time that Joe and the guys called me at 2AM-we got some trucks of my kids out of the cellar, Joe Corcoran got some of his kids toy trucks also---In the middle of the night ,we painted DPW on the sides of these little trucks----I pulled them the next day in the parade-Tommy Langan followed behind me with a rope to keep the toy trucks in line--.......... Ray Flannagan saw to it that the TV and newspaper made a big deal about the entire affair, The head of DPW never bothered us again and that was the end of all the trucks and equipment in the parade-we had a blast John " Star " Kelly, 1992 Parade President We had a band from Sewanaka School District in Long Island entered. The weather was forecast to be 'some snow'. I woke up and it was bright and sunny with only a dusting which would obviously melt in a few hours. I came out of the shower and there was a message on my mobile from a Long Island Area code. I thought "This can't be good. They're cancelling". I called and they told me that they got 4" of snow, so they figured that we got over a foot and wanted to know if we cancelled the parade!. Assuring them of the 'luck o' the Irish' they arrived and were a BIG hit. p.s. At 3:30ish the heavens opened up and we got another inch or so of snow! Do you remember any "notable" personalities marching in the parade over the years? Too many to count. From Lynn Swann, retired Pitt Steeler gubernatorial candidate throwing a football to Homer the plumber.-and, of course, Hillary. Dan Loftus, 2005 Parade President Do I remember any unusual weather? HA! Do you remember "The Blizzard of '93? I was president in 1993, and the parade was scheduled for March 13. From March 12th through the 15th the infamous Blizzard of '93, also known as the Storm of the Century, or the Superstorm, the White Hurricane, the No-Name Hurricane, etc. dumped more than 2 feet of snow on Scranton. This superstorm brought with it record low temperatures, strong winds, blizzards, tornadoes and storm surges. In addition to white out conditions caused by snow and strong winds, electrical storms were occurring at the same time. Over 60,000 lightening strikes were recorded. At the height of the storm, every major airport from Halifax to Atlanta was closed. In the end, the Blizzard of '93 caused 300 deaths and approximately $6 to $10 billion in damage. The decision of the "go-no go" committee was an easy one. The parade was postponed. The following week was a blur of activity. Fortunately, our schools were closed, and I was able to devote much of my time to trying to bring off a parade the following Saturday. I was just about to take over the superintendency of Scranton's schools, so the impact of the storm on the schools was a very big story. Our decision on opening the schools was a day-to-day affair. Each day we felt that the next day we would surely open, but the mere volume of snow proved too much for school buses to negotiate city streets. Both print and electronic media were in my office every day, and we did numerous live interviews during the week. What was most interesting, however, was that their major interest was not whether the schools would open but were plans in place to conduct the parade the following weekend. I became the spokesperson for the two biggest stories of the week other than the storm. I spent so much time with TV on air personalities that several of us started friendships that remain till today. Thanks for the opportunity to revisit this wild week in my memory. Dr. John R. Williams, 1993 Parade President …...30 years and I am still involved. What sticks out to me is all the guys I have met over the years and all the fun I have had. We had planning meetings, the post meetings, the summer outings, The Notre Dame Bus trips, The post Notre Dame Game pub stops, The post Parade Tours, The Golf Outings , The post golf outing stops. We like post stops. We have also had our share of sad times. Many members both young and old have passed away in those 30 years some like Brian Kelly were way to young to leave us. So what does it mean to me personally to be part of this parade legacy? Its been part of my life for over 30 years and I just love being part of it. It's the greatest committee and the best parade anyone could ever get involved with. ….there were years where we crossed our fingers that in the end we could pay all our bills. We are also well aware that for the organization to continue we need young people. This is why we need to make sure being on the committee is not all work and the elder statesmen need to turn over the various functions to these younger guys. If we don't continue to bring in and keep active these younger people then at some point we will have a problem. Finally we always need to make sure the Parade stays a Family event. As the Parade grows there is continually some type of issue to deal with as outside forces try to use the event for their own agendas. We will continue to do the right thing so as to perpetuate forever that this is a family event for the good of the community. John P. Nealon, CPA , 1999 Parade President 50 Years of Marching Proud!
