In 2006 I had the privilege of sitting in on a conversation with some of Central Oregon’s community leaders, floating the idea to my employer Brooks Resources, about forming a “City Club”- a place where local citizens could come together on a monthly basis and freely discuss local, national and even global issues that affect Central Oregon, in a non-judgmental, non-partisan atmosphere. And with the support of 5 Founding sponsors, the City Club launched its inaugural forum in January 2007. • Election of City Club’s first female president, Jamie Christman! After a brief celebration of our successes, we are now tasked with increasing the value City Club provides to its members and other stakeholders. We have adopted new governance policies for 2016 and are well on our way in our strategic planning. What will change in 2016? We’re still working out the details, but be assured that our leadership is committed to City Club’s mission and success and we hope that you will be with us in our journey. Fast forward to 2015. By many measures City Club has fulfilled, and surpassed, its founders’ goals. City Club has earned a privileged position as a respected organization promoting the livability and future successes of a thriving Central Oregon community. Memberships and sponsorships grew, as did attendance at our 12 monthly forums. We reached capacity many times at the St. Charles venue, necessitating our move to a larger venue for 2016. Internally, our board spent the year moving to a governance policy-based organizational model. The Carver model “enables the board to focus on the larger issues, to delegate with clarity, to control management’s job without meddling, to rigorously evaluate the accomplishment of the organization; to truly lead its organization.” Policy governance has given our organization a fundamental, stable foundation on which to build our future. Our board is strong, our committees are fun, hard working and engaged, and we continue to convene diverse, inclusive conversations.
