2013 CELEBRATION OF GIVING ® United Way’s mission is to provide leadership in uniting our community to improve people’s lives and build a vital, caring community. ® Thank You For Living United T o all of the donors and volunteers who joined us in supporting Greenville County through United Way’s 2013 campaign, I thank you for your commitment to help make our community the best it can be. As you may know, the theme for this year’s United Way campaign was “Walk In Their Shoes.” At the center of the campaign was a thought-provoking video produced by the creative team at Erwin Penland that took one average, middle class Greenville County family and temporarily put them in the position of being out on the street with no home and limited resources. The goal of the video and this campaign was to get each of us thinking about what it would be like to be in the position that far too many of our fellow citizens are experiencing every day. Where would we go if we needed help? What would we do if we were in their shoes? Fortunately, we live in a community where that kind of empathy is in great supply. As we saw in the video—through the shelter resident who gave our family $10, the random stranger who offered his cell phone, and the neighboring family who loaned them extra mattresses and blankets—the people of Greenville County truly care and look out for one another. And we are so grateful that this year so many men and women chose the To learn more about United Way of Greenville County, visit www.unitedwaygc.org or call 467-3333. 2 United Way campaign as their way to express that empathy and generosity to the community. I also want to express our gratitude to Campaign Chair Art Seaver for his tremendous leadership over the course of the campaign. Art is a wonderful advocate for our community and an instrumental leader for United Way. He led this campaign with passion and skill, and we can’t thank him enough. If you were unable to contribute financially this year, but still want to give back to our community, I invite you to volunteer through United Way Hands On Greenville. It connects people with hundreds of volunteer opportunities at many of United Way’s partner programs throughout the year. You can search the available projects online at handsongreenville.org. On behalf of the board, the staff and those in the community who need us most, I applaud all of you for your hard work and thank you for your generous support this year. ANN ROBINSON 2013 United Way Board of Trustees Chair CertusBank Community Responds with Record Campaign S ixteen million, six hundred eleven thousand, five hundred and ninetyone dollars. Thanks to the collective generosity of Greenville County, that’s the number I was honored to announce as the final total of the 2013 United Way campaign. It was a record-setting effort (breaking our own mark for the largest United Way campaign in South Carolina) made possible by the remarkable support of our donors and volunteers. Even for a banker, $16,611,591 is a big number. But for our community, it will be huge. Thanks to this outpouring of support, United Way will be able to continue funding more than 100 of the most effective local programs serving Greenville County. Not only does this funding help meet the immediate food, shelter, health and safety needs of those in crisis, but the dollars are also strategically aligned with programs designed to accomplish our long-term goals of getting more children prepared to succeed in school, more youth to graduate from high school and more families to achieve financial stability. More than 105,000 people in Greenville County were helped by United Way-funded programs last year, and we will be able to reach even more in 2014 thanks to the incredible support of more than 37,000 donors at 649 companies, both large and small. To all of our donors, we thank you for generously committing your dollars in support of our community. Your gift is an investment in the future of Greenville County that pays dividends each and every time one of our fellow citizens is helped. Rallying 37,000 people behind a single cause is no easy feat. We couldn’t have done it without the commitment of 1,300 campaign volunteers who drove this campaign for the past year. On behalf of our volunteers, our partner agencies whose programs receive United Way funding, and the thousands of individuals and families who benefit from this community’s generosity and compassion, I thank you for once again showing what makes Greenville County such a special place to call home. 2013 CAMPAIGN HIGHLIGHTS • $16,611,591 raised. • 37,316 donors contributed. • 649 workplace campaigns. • Workplace campaigns represented 72% of the total. • 152 companies contributed a corporate gift representing 20% of the total. • Retirees, medical professionals and others contributing outside the workplace represent 8% of the total. • 26 new campaigns contributed $95,192 from employee and corporate gifts. • Contributions from donors giving $1,000 or more represent 46% of the total campaign. • 4,363 Palmetto Society donors contributed $7,673, 808. • Thanks to the Stathakis family of restaurants, Stax restaurants, Greenville County Recreation District, Greenville Zoo and Roper Mountain Science Center for giving generous coupons to anyone pledging $250 or more. • Special thanks to Table 301 for graciously donating gift certificates in recognition of Palmetto Society donors. • A special thank you to Erwin-Penland, who provided in-kind creative services to develop promotional materials for the 2013 campaign. All were successful in sharing the message to get involved with the community through United Way. We are blessed to live in a community filled with leaders. Some leaders give their time and talents. Others generously give their resources. Many do both. It’s not about the amount of time spent or the size of the contribution. It’s the good intention behind every action or gift that makes our community stronger. DAVID LOMINACK TD Bank 2013 Chair We want to thank the 4,363 Palmetto Society members who contributed $7,673,808 to our community. Included in the totals are 657 donors who became new Palmetto Society members by giving at the $1,000 or more level for the first time. Palmetto Society dollars represent 46% of the total annual campaign. Women’s Leadership 1,646 donors contributed $2,211,942 TRISH SPRINGFIELD The Palmetto Bank 2013 Chair As part of the Michelin Challenge, 226 members committed to step up their giving to the $1,500 Leader’s Circle of the Palmetto Society. We want to extend a very special thank you to Michelin North America for this important incentive. CROCKER Dixon Hughes Goodman LLP 2013 Chair Tocqueville Society donors lead the way with their generosity, each member contributing $10,000 or more annually. The Tocqueville Society was named for the French aristocrat Alexis de Tocqueville who came to America in 1831 at the age of 26 and traveled all over our young nation. Perhaps his most important observation was that Americans helped each other in times of need. He wrote: “I must say that I have seen Americans make great and real sacrifices to the public welfare; and have noticed a hundred instances in which they hardly ever failed to lend faithful support to one another.” Each member of the Tocqueville Society has his or her own reasons for joining but all share in knowing that they are having a positive impact on the place they call home. We thank the 132 members of the Tocqueville Society for their outstanding leadership. United Way Poinsett Society H.F. “GALLY” GALLIVAN UBS 2013 Chair A gift to United Way’s Endowment is recognized through the Poinsett Society. But the true recognition for a donor is the fact these gifts have endless impact—a true Legacy for the Future. Tocqueville Legacy Circle recognizes donors who make deferred or current gifts of $200,000 or more which will perpetuate an annual gift at the $10,000 Tocqueville level. Tocqueville Legacy Circle members total reached 32 in 2013. When a gift is made to the Poinsett Society, donors are establishing a never-ending gift to our community. 119 donors have made outright or deferred gifts (110 donors contributing $25,000 or more) through the Poinsett Society, totaling $17.1 million. United Way Life is a life insurance program that allows donors to utilize life insurance of $200,000 or more with a fixed premium for a maximum of 5 years at a very affordable level. This allows younger donors to make very generous commitments early in life. Ten donors have committed to gifts through United Way life totaling $4,750,000. Golden Poinsettia is the highest level of recognition in the Poinsett Society for those donors making a deferred or current gift of $1 million or more. There are currently 5 Golden Poinsettia members. A special thanks to all these donors for looking to the future of caring. A Legacy for the Future—Please remember the United Way Endowment in your will or estate plan. 5 #1 AWARD WINNERS #1 Award – Top 5 Campaigns (Employee & Corporate Total) 1 2 3 4 5 Fluor Corporation Michelin North America Greenville Health System GE Power and Water Greenville County Schools $1,761,243 $1,599,515 $1,025,796 $843,914 $587,878 #1 Award – Top 5 Campaigns (Employee ONLY) 1 2 3 4 5 Fluor Corporation Michelin North America Greenville Health System Greenville County Schools GE Power and Water $1,174,162 $1,131,589 $1,025,796 $587,878 $561,638 #1 Award – 500 to 1,000 Employees 1 Michelin Americas Research Company 2 Nutra Manufacturing, Inc. 3 TD Bank 4UPS 5 BB&T $306,511 $255,068 $145,739 $143,725 $114,445 #1 Award – 200 to 499 Employees 1 Baldor Electric Company 2 Canal Insurance Company 3 Mitsubishi Polyester Film, Inc. 4 3M Company 5 Perrigo Company of SC, Inc. $187,098 $168,998 $127,282 $125,799 $97,143 #1 Award – 100 to 199 Employees 1AMECO 2 Elliott Davis, LLC 3 Renewable Water Resources 4 Ogletree, Deakins, Nash, Smoak & Stewart, P.C. 5 Athene Annuity & Life Assurance Company $136,786 $120,507 $105,321 $66,960 $54,035 #1 Award – 25 to 99 Employees 1UBS 2 Dixon Hughes Goodman LLP 3 Gallivan, White & Boyd, P.A. 4 Ahold USA 5 Smith Moore Leatherwood LLP $85,007 $79,939 $78,174 $63,395 $61,961 #1 Award – 2 to 24 Employees 6 1 2 3 4 5 Easlan Capital Inc.
