Passports must be valid for at least six months from the date of departure from Saint Lucia. For British passport holders, a visa is not required. The duty-free allowance into Saint Lucia is 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars or 2kg of tobacco, and 40 fluid ounces of spirit or wine. • The island is 14 miles wide and 27 miles long. • Castries is the capital of Saint Lucia. • The main language spoken is English, but a French based Creole is also spoken as a result of Saint Lucia’s dual British-French heritage. WEATHER The weather is tropical, with daytime temperatures typically in the mid to high 20º Celsius year round. Adaptors are available at many hotels. Vehicles can be rented from the airports and hotels, and can be booked in advance. Your client will need a temporary driving permit, purchasable from the rental company. A four-wheel-drive vehicle is a good idea. TAXES AND SERVICE CHARGES A government tax and service charge is applicable on many services in addition to the prices displayed. However, the price on labels in shops is the price paid. CURRENCY The official currency is the Eastern Caribbean dollar, which is linked to the US dollar at US$1 to EC$2.70. Most items can be paid for with US dollars, and hotel rates are quoted in US dollars. Cashpoints issue EC dollars. GETTING AROUND HEALTH Taxis No compulsory vaccinations are required, but for up to date information your clients’ should check with their GP. Insect repellent is recommended. These are widely available across Saint Lucia and point-to-point fares are fixed, but it is still advisable to establish the cost of the journey before setting off. TIME DIFFERENCE In winter, Saint Lucia is four hours behind Greenwich Mean Time, and from late March to late October (British Summer Time) five hours behind the UK. Buses A network of minibuses provide public transport to most corners of the island, and fares are cheap. Helicopters Tours offer a spectacular and stunning aerial view of Saint Lucia. Helicopter transfers between Hewanorra International Airport and George FL Charles Airport reduces the travel time between the South and North of the island to just 8 minutes.
